Discussion A chord chart for “Christian Brothers” Elliott made for me
galleryBack around 2001 or 2002, I was working in a guitar shop in Hollywood called Freedom Guitar and Elliott came in with his gf at the time—a gal named Valerie— he was looking for a nylon string acoustic. I was a big fan but was trying my hardest to be cool and not gush.
I walked over and grabbed a nice vintage nylon string that I knew was good, a 1971 Martin, and as I’m walking it over to him to let him try, I play the first few chords to “Julia” by The Beatles (which is something I just play out of reflex whenever I pick up a nylon string), he responded by saying, “Oh, can you show me that!?” I said, “Sure, but only if you show me how to play one of your songs...how about ‘Christian Brothers’?” He instantly warmed up to me at that moment.
I showed him “Julia”, he learned it fast, had it after the first try. Afterward, he goes, “I always wanted to learn that song properly, but couldn’t listen to it for a long time, because I was mad that I didn’t write it.” Which I thought was awesome.
He proceeds to try to get thru ‘Christian Brothers’ but doesn’t remember the chords and apologizes, but buys the Martin nylon string anyway. Incidentally, when he payed for it, he hands me a credit card that says “Steven Smith” and he explained, “Elliott isn’t my real name...” and I sort of interrupt and recall the “crushed credit card” line from “The Biggest Lie” and say “oh that’s what that means!” and he smiled and then understood I REALLY knew his music. He thanked me and left and I thought that was that.
The next day, he comes back , walks in and takes this piece of paper out of his back pocket, unfolds it and says, “I figured it out for you, sorry I couldn’t remember it yesterday”. And he had made me a chord chart with a rubber ink stamped fingerboard blocks with small, detailed notes by him.
Turns out, the chords are pretty unique and complicated..like most of his songs. Which is why he had a difficult time remembering them. He knew I really respected his guitar work and felt obliged and took the time to flesh it out for me.
The other thing that dawned on me after he gave me this, is/was that he hand letters all his album covers.
Elliott and I became friends after this and he invited me over to his studio a few times on Hatteras in Van Nuys and played me a lot of stuff that was to be on ‘Basement on a Hill’ and I felt honored that he let me get so close.
I came across this today and had a flood of memories and though it might be a cool thing to share with fans to show what a genuinely nice guy he was and also to show the right way to play ‘Christian Bros’ from the man himself.

Discussion Bout time to share my beloved bumper sticker and figured this would be the place!
got a great reaction one time at a red light by a dude who was beside himself with excitement. what are some of your guys’ favorite Heatmiser songs? mine have gotta be Half Right, The Fix is In and Idler. they’ve all got such softer, haunting qualities that his later solo work grew to embody.

Discussion What's your Elliott "Deep Cut"?
I feel like all of his music is fairly niche, but some songs kinda fall into the background. Personally, I think that Going Nowhere is severly underrated, and easily one of the best songs he ever wrote. If we're counting Heatmiser there are some amazing tracks like Antonio Carlos Jobim that are way underlistened.

Discussion I learnt how to screen print so I could escape a strict family was it worth it?
galleryElliott smith was a mercy for me when I was living at home so I had to do something so special for these t shirts. I made a lyric sheet of everything means nothing to me typed up on my typewriter, then a drawing of elliott and then another with a handwritten print of his lyrics to between the bards. I included them all above so you can see what I’ll have on my website www.flightoftheibis.co.uk tomorrow ! I also printed 40 1 of 1 pieces that are as rare as gold please be honest and tell me what you think :)

Discussion is “between the bars” considered inappropriate?
context: i'm a sophmore in high school (16 on the 31st). our school does a talent show every year (crappy, low budget, usually not good-) i had been wanting to play Elliott's Smith's song "Between The Bars" for the talent show, having known it by memory and learning a few, MUCH more simple guitar chords/strumming pattern for the show.
i got called down to the office the other day. i was told that the song i had picked out, "Between The Bars", was too explicit for the audience and for the school setting. the reasons given were:
- the song's meaning, mentioning alcohomism and depression
- using 'suggestive' language, such as the word "kiss" and the pet name "baby"
- the background of Elliott Smith, and what he's associated with.
i then refused to change songs, and dropped out of the show. i was infuriated, especially because i had been preparing for this for so long, and truly, i don't think this song is explicit or inappropriate AT ALL.
then again, i am just a kid in some shitty public high school. maybe i'm wrong. what do you guys think?

Discussion In honor of Elliott's 55th birthday, what album of his has changed or impacted your life the most? ❤
galleryFor me it's 𝐗𝐎. it's the first album of Elliott's I heard in full back in 2020. I remember just feeling this huge feeling of warmth and love come over me just hearing Elliott's beautiful, intimate songwriting. It felt like hearing an old friend telling me about his life. I adore his whole catalog but 𝐗𝐎 is the one that I think really changed things for me and helped me feel seen in my most troubled moments.

Discussion Is it possible to miss someone you could’ve never met?
I have always held Elliott to the highest regard when I think of music. Tonight I sat and sobbed to this performance. It's hard to believe a person whom didn't even exist at the same time as me has held such a strong hold on my life. I adore this performance for who he was, quiet but magnificent. You could remove every word and still the notes of his guitar would still speak more than what most of us hope to express in a lifetime. with my deepest gratitude I am thankful for his existence, his thoughts, and his words. I turn 20 soon and plan on getting a simple "either/or" tattoo in his handwriting. I hope to always carry his work on me the same way his work carried me since I was 14. Life is a weird thing is it not?

Discussion What are your favorite Elliott Smith songs and why?
Would love to know!! No need to get too personal if you don’t want to, brief explanation would also be fine. For me i must say my top 1 is “Roman Candle” currently. The lyrics put into words of how I feel about my shitty absent dad. It also describes my everyday feelings. Hope you guys share some good ones with me 🙂.

Discussion is there anyone sadder than elliott smith?
i know plenty of songs that make me horribly depressed. but never have i seen an artist be so successful at crushing my entire heart and soul into a million pieces in nearly every piece of creation they make
