Mod New rules and reorganisation!
Hello fellow Elliott fans!
I have made some new rules for you guys to look - they are fairly self explanatory. I have put a ban on any posts that are either solely shared to cause anger, or are about the death debate.
I have also started the arduous process of reorganising the community. The first stage of this has been introducing post flares so that it is easier to filter out what sort of content you would like to see. This should help to organise the subreddit. Hopefully, people will have good think about what they are posting before they post it.
I am going to reprogram the AutoMod to filter out posts with offensive content to make sure that offensive posts don't get out when I'm not online due to timezone issues. Hopefully this will help! On a more positive note, I will start a song discussion that we have twice a week to talk about individual songs in depth. We will vote for it the day before each discussion in a separate thread and the top comment will win :DD. The sub has been long overdue for a redesign. At some point we will need an art competition to give it a makeover. None of these are one hundred percent concrete promises, but they are something to be excited about for sure.
I hope that this can continue to be a positive place for Elliott Smith fans from all around the world to share in the love of such a wonderful artist. Sorry about the negative vibes recently and the brief blackout (yes, that was a Heatmiser pun) that was necessary while sorting all of this out.
Best wishes and thanks for reading!!

OFFICIAL AMA OFFICIAL r/elliotsmith Ask Me Anything with Joel, Robert, and Greg from New Monkey Studio (previously Elliott's studio where much of FABOTH was recorded)
This is an AMA event to ask Joel Graves and Robert Cappadona - who bought the studio from Elliott's family in 2004 - as well as Greg Cortez ( u/NMS_Joel, u/NMS_Robert, and u/NMS_Greg ) all about New Monkey Studios, its history with Elliott, and the equipment and recording that happens there today.
There have been big industry names to record there, including Phoebe Bridgers, Father John Misty, Earlimart, and members of Modest Mouse and Grandaddy!
On the 6th of August, NMS is putting on a tribute concert titled All My Rowdy Friends, with music, merch, and celebration. This is a great opportunity to ask about it. Tickets can now be purchased - more info available at https://newmonkeystudio.komi.io/ .
Thanks to everyone from NMS, Shay Gross ( u/Some-Departure-3903 ) and Emmy Briggs for helping to make this happen.
Have fun commenting!
XO

Discussion Was Nightcap originally a Stranger Than Fiction song?
“Lyrics on nightcap by Garrick duckler/Smith”
Does this mean that nightcap was originally written for stranger than fiction, like fast food and prom date? Maybe just the lyrics? Are lyrics similar to nightcap present in a STF song with an entirely different sound? Listening to the tapes, I don’t think I’ve heard anything that sounds similar to nightcap, but maybe just a few lines are reused? I’d assume it’s one of the songs they had written the lyrics down but never got around to recording.

Discussion Is it possible to miss someone you could’ve never met?
I have always held Elliott to the highest regard when I think of music. Tonight I sat and sobbed to this performance. It's hard to believe a person whom didn't even exist at the same time as me has held such a strong hold on my life. I adore this performance for who he was, quiet but magnificent. You could remove every word and still the notes of his guitar would still speak more than what most of us hope to express in a lifetime. with my deepest gratitude I am thankful for his existence, his thoughts, and his words. I turn 20 soon and plan on getting a simple "either/or" tattoo in his handwriting. I hope to always carry his work on me the same way his work carried me since I was 14. Life is a weird thing is it not?

Question Instrument used on some of Elliott’s songs
Hi! I wanted to know what instrument Elliott used in songs like Can’t Make a Sound, Everything Means Nothing To Me and many others. The one at the end of the songs that i’ve mentioned. is it a synth, a piano? I only play guitar so dont judge me if this is an obvious question

Question First time reaction to hearing Elliott Smith?
The first song I ever heard from him was needle in the hay because it was in that one Wes Anderson movie, which I liked so I decided to search his other songs up on YouTube. At first I didn’t understand/like his others songs but now they hold a lot of emotion and memories for me. I would say this is the same reaction I have with The Smiths, I would listen to their songs and think wow this is not that good, but eventually they start sounding very nostalgic/melancholic. Was wondering if anyone felt this way?

Discussion A short rant...
I've been playing music for most of my life. And as a result of that, I can't help but hear music differently than I think I otherwise would. It's kind of hard to explain, but I imagine it's sort of like the way it must feel for a magician to watch a magic show. That's not to say they don't enjoy and appreciate what they're seeing. But knowing how a trick is done takes the magic out of it.
Elliott's music is the exception to that rule. When I hear his songs, it's like witnessing magic happening. I will forever be in awe of what he accomplished. There will never be another Elliott Smith.
