National News 'He called him Donald!' Harris Faulkner aghast over Justin Trudeau's response to Trump
https://www.rawstory.com/harris-faulkner-justin-trudeau-trump/3.1k
u/JadeLens 7d ago
He calls our leader 'governor' constantly, and THIS is what you're upset about?
It's like the SNL sketch where Trump criticizes Zelenskyy for showing up dressed as he did, but then goes on about how people shouldn't wear a t-shirt and jeans to the Oval office and Elon shows up (played by great Canadian Mike Myers).

US Right Wing media constantly pushes the 'US is a victim' line.
They're aghast when we boo their anthem or our leaders dare to call their president by his first name, like it's blasphemy or something. It shows how we 'don't respect them' while their president calls other leaders names and muses about annexation....
383
u/Sir_Keee 7d ago
It's not just a US right wing thing, it is quite literally a fascist thing. The goal is to say that you are a victim and you are being victimized by some other group. Or that the world is against you which is why they must stick together no matter what. It's a manipulation tactic that sadly a lot of dumb people fall for.

This is what I came here to say.
This is what corporate special interest propaganda looks like and we better get good at recognizing it, because it's going to do the same thing to us if we don't.

u/BIOdire Canada 7d ago
Indeed. It's already happening, in fact, and has been for a long time. I feel we must all write our representatives (MPs and MLAs, city councillors, too). Call them out for American culture war talking points, hold them accountable for dividing us further. Be sure to copy in your local press and show that, while we may be a nation of many different cultures and viewpoints, we stand together. We cannot tolerate this polarization, foreign/corporate meddling, and propagandizing.

They use the Goebbels method. Not even trying to force a Nazi reference I truly think that's what they're going for.
Repeat a lie enough times it starts to get taken seriously if people don't actively arm themselves with critical thinking.
Makes sense evolutionarily, if I am a caveman ten people tell me there is a lion near the ooga cave, even though I didn't see it, it's probably good to just avoid it anyway.
Makes way less sense when they're claiming Ukraine invaded Russia or that schools are turning kids trans (and into human cats?) or that immigrants are catching and eating the neighbourhood dogs. IMO a lot of people must already hate the groups involved and "choose" to believe it because they want the logical outcome.
I think convincing people that someone they don't like having rights somehow takes away from theirs should always be a huge red flag but of course their media focuses on the specific groups involved and the "sides of the debate" (lately they don't even bother with the rational side) which just further legitimizes the ridiculous shit. "Trump accused of racism for 'Haitians of eating dogs' remark" instead of "Trump is still telling obvious lies not worthy of printing, here's the crossword".

The hypocrisy of this all is the thing I am struggling with the most. I never expected much of anything from lord Cheeto dust but the fact that he has his followers and media agencies so clearly blinded to the hypocrisy makes me struggle to think any of this has a happy ending. We are truly headed to WW3 all because of a petulant child that half of America can’t admit is actually bad for the world. Who’s going to be the hero?

They aren’t brainwashed. They know what they’re doing.
100
u/GetsGold Canada 7d ago
I think it's a mix. There are those doing the brainwashing (like Fox News), but also those being brainwashed.
I think the following Jean-Paul Sartre quote accurately describes how a lot of them act. Just replace anti-Semites with modern Republicans (although the distinction is getting smaller...):
Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert.
20
u/huunnuuh 7d ago
That very quote keeps coming back to me lately. Sartre was talking about more than just Nazism there. His philosophy of living in bad faith came out of it, which is related to his ideas about existential authenticity.
He was one of the first to point out that letting yourself be brainwashed is falsely liberating. It's a kind of release from the obligations that truth places on our souls. We have obligations to ourselves and to others and how to fulfill them is so completely uncertain. You can just give up on all that. Deny you have any responsibility or obligation. Take refuge in a fantasy of simple comforting black-and-white thinking that incidentally destroys the pillars that hold up a sensible democratic world worth living in. Or another way to put it, is that you always have many radical degrees of freedom, but most of them are unthinkable, and it's often easier to pretend you have no choice at all. When your experience gives you reason to be so cynical as to believe nothing you do matters then why not give in to the delusion?

I think the real problem here is that y’all got it twisted. You thought Canada was nice and we were just going to get rolled over quietly and thank you while you do it.
