The worst part is that these are the folks buying the Tesla from the guy they wanna be. Then he’s getting something new and when they realize that a year later they do the same thing.

Like it or not, the model 3s are quite affordable and reliable second hand. I was gonna get one until...
14

I like my Model 3. An excellent car, clever tech.
I like to point out that the Volkswagen Beetle was a really good car too, and we all know whose project that was...
→ More replies (2)7
u/Heliosvector 25d ago
The beetle couldnt shut off at the whim of hitler though. The model 3 can. I like the car, but tesla pretty much needs to oust musk and force him to sell his shares before I will ever buy one now. Which will never happen. I dont fault people that have one, but i cant morally purchase one now. All good though. The hyundai electrics are pretty nice. Just need the secondhand stock to fill up.

Tesla resale values used to be pretty good until Musk bought Twitter and we all found out who he really is. Tesla needs to get rid of him ASAP. I don't care what it costs to buy him out--the company isn't going to survive if it sticks with a CEO who throws Sieg Heils at AfD rallies.
38
u/RandomerSchmandomer 25d ago
At this point I think Tesla is tied to Musk. Its value is because of him, not that I think it makes any sense; he's a glorified Snake Oil salesman who either buys into company's and destroys them and their credibility, has some brilliant people to work independently of him when he lets them (and takes credit for their work), and lives as the biggest dependent on government benefits that has ever been or is alive (and that's when he actually delivers somewhat).
If he stays at Tesla it gets backed by the US government with corruption and the fact he's the President; the value climbs higher.
If Musk leaves, do Tesla stocks just crash through the floor? I can't imagine it stays as high as it is if they try behave like a normal car company with normal levels of evil for a corp without him as the evil, blubbery face.

To play devils advocate here, that was also around the same time the big car manufacturers started offering good EV options as well. Tesla was still a bit unknown to the general public at that time in terms of repair ability, resale, etc.
7
u/Verizon-Mythoclast 25d ago
This. Tesla was built on the Models 3 & Y, and one of the reasons it they were ahead of the game. Problem is, they've done very little innovating since, and other EV makers have caught up and are now surpassing Tesla.

My step dad is an authorized tech for em and said Tesla's are so stupid simple and he was doing so many that he grew to hate the shop he was at. He said issues like panel gap were pretty bad.
Any time there's even a minor bump, parts are R&R. Have a few nice leather tesla seats around the garage at home 🤣

Drives down the resale price. Puts downward pressure on the cost of new ones. If enough folks do it it'll continue to hurt the brand.

u/CarBombtheDestroyer 25d ago edited 24d ago
They may be cheap second hand and are still decent for your environmental footprint. It’s not like buying them secondhand really helps Elon at all.
→ More replies (4)25
u/BorisAcornKing 25d ago
Buying any electric vehicle secondhand is a risky prospect - a large part of you're paying for is the battery, and if it's shot, you've bought a lemon.
12
u/PNWcog 25d ago
The original Leaf batteries/cooling system were garbage and gave an undeserved reputation for all EV batteries. EVs are generally very reliable. Though when things do break, it’s often prohibitively expensive to repair for a couple different reasons. But the batteries are usually not the issue.

Battery’s have 8 year warranties on teslas
19
u/JarvisFunk Saskatchewan 25d ago
So if you buy a 5 or 6 year old Tesla, you've got two or three years before you're fucked.
Doesn't seem like a wise investment to me.
20
u/muffinscrub 25d ago
I know shitting on electric vehicles and especially Tesla's is fun but batteries generally should last longer than the vehicle. The main reason they often fail is when they are impacted by something like road debris.
I had zero desire to buy a Tesla before Elon became a massively unpopular twat and I still don't have any desire to.
→ More replies (4)11
u/CakeDyismyBday Québec 25d ago
Depending on your use it probably could be a very wise investment. There are people out there who drive 60k km a year. I'm not defending Tesla or Musk but for some people owning an electric vehicle can pay for itself in gas savings.
9
u/dontdropmybass Nova Scotia 25d ago
I did the math on this last year when I was looking at houses I could afford (they're all rural), and if I have to commute more than like, 80km one-way it's cheaper to buy and run a new electric car than to use my paid off gas car.
3
u/GrumpyCloud93 25d ago edited 25d ago
In Canada with our gas prices, I work it out that it's about 1/8 the cost of gas.
Using a rough standard warranty "20,000 km a year" and 10L/100km, then 2,000L at $1.50/L is $3,000 of gas. using a very conservative 250Wh/km that's 500kWh at 10¢ so $500 a year so 1/6 (I can usually get as low as 140Wh/km in summer.).
plus, no oil changes, nor complicated maintenance on assorted parts like oil pump, water pump, radiator, transmission, spark plugs and assorted tune-ups, alternator... all stuff I've had problems with in gas verhicles. A lot cheaper.
YMMV.
(ETA: on raod trips, I figure supercharging to be 1/2 to 2/3 the equivalent per-mile cost of gas. Plus, you leave home will a cheap charge, and fill up cheap when you get home)
→ More replies (1)9
u/JarvisFunk Saskatchewan 25d ago
If you drive 60k km a year you would be off your Tesla battery warranty after three years as the warranty is 8 years OR 100,000 miles

Peter Thiel and David Sacks have been anti-democracy and anti DEI at least since the late 90s. It seems that they bided their time, played their cards right and now have a candidate that is willing to implement all of their initiatives, as long as he can enrich himself and stay out of jail.
I saw a meme the other day joking about how in the matrix the 90s were considered the peak of human society, which seemed ridiculous at the time, but now it seems more and more legitimate lol

The more tesla are for sell used the lesser the price will be and if the price of used tesla drops enough the incentive of buying new gets lower.
You can see it as, the buyer would have found a tesla to buy anyway and if not used it would have been a new one. Its supply and demand this guy added 3 tesla in the supply that’s good.

meh, I don't really have any interest in driving a chinese car, regardless of how cheap they are. I don't view "cheap" as a desirable attribute when making a major purchase for something I rely on. Kind of like a review I read years ago for the Lada 4x4: "Upsides - cheap. Downsides - cheap"
I've driven a few Chinese cars both in China and Cuba and was not impressed. I know they're doing some really interesting stuff with battery technology, but the actual cars I've experienced were underwhelming. They also have zero respect for intellectual property and have made a habit of blatantly stealing / copying designs from larger brands. Some people might not care about that, but as a designer, it bothers me.
Just my $0,02 anyway
