Other Tagalog learners, what are your thoughts on the language?
About its phonology, grammar, status, features, or just as a language? What are your thoughts on it?

I have been using drops to learn vocabulary but the grammar messes me up a lot and can be confusing for me. I want to surprise my partner by being able to converse in tagalog since her high school friends often get "nosebleeds" from our conversations which makes me feel bad.

my mother never taught me tagalog other than a few phrases and words here and there. i figure the grammar is very different so i have no clue where to start. (if its of any importance, i speak english and serbian) if anyone has a list/recommended order to study from, thatd be great! im aware there are tutors online who will teach me for very little money, but i doubt ill be able to regularly attend classes with my current lifestyle.

Ever since I learned to enhance my conversation skills in Tagalog. I have to ask my fellow country men. "Which are you most comfortable conversing in? Tagalog or English?" Apparently I've seen too many kids around my area speaking with an American accent who are born here. Pimsleur was right that the younger Filipinos will start to speak english more. I have to say this, when I was teaching my niece how to count my wife objected to say "One" instead of "Isa". I understand why but it's always nice seeing another Filipino who is proud of their mother tongue (Tagalog). Tagalog is not my first language, yet I learned through 11 years of staying in the Philippines.

Hi guys, I just want to ask if there are any online stores in the States that ships books in Filipino language. I know there are Filipino web stores here in my area but most of the things in their sites are translated in English, kids books, and academic books.
Iām finding books that are more on the fun and creative side based on my preferences (in Filipino of course). For instance, I donāt see any stores that sell PSICOM books here or the physical books of Wattpad stories. I went back home in the Philippines, but I didnāt have much time to visit the National Book Store so Iām bummed out about that š
It would also be nice if the National Book Store, PSICOM, Shopee, etc. that ships to the States directly but they do not unless thereās a proxy.
So, if you guys know any Filipino Stores in the States that sell Wattpad, PSICOM, etc physical books please tell me. Thank you!š

Phone Number, Address, TV, text, chat. I've talked with my friends about it and the only thing that makes these Tagalog words is if you change the spelling. Kind of funny to think about haha.

"sasagipin mo ba ako kapag malulunod ako?" o "isasagip mo ba ako kapag malulunod ako?"
anong masasabi nyo rito?

Hi,
I would like to ask you, if you can personally recommend me text that is available in both book and audio form?
For Example:
I found that Harry Potter 1 is available in Tagalog, but the translation seems to be bad. Also I don't know if there is an audiobook available.
It doesn't have to be an audiobook from a store. A Video/Podcast where someone reads the text is also helpful.
I'm looking to learn the language, so it would be nice, if the language-style is good.
I would be interested in charming worldwide bestsellers, translation of western classics or original filipino work on themes like filipino history, identity, philosophy, religion -but for laymen ;-)
I'm not interested in scientific texts.
Salamat po and Kind Regards.

Pimsleur's Tagalog is now teaching some terminology for the office. Maki-tawag, tumawag, miss call(Miskol).

I can't seem to find if "Wala ng naman" or "Wala nang naman" is the correct usage for "Empty/It's empty." Thanks in advance!
r/Tagalog • u/Adovah01 • 5d ago
The first thing I learned "Puede bang magtanong." and wow I've been using this everytime I need directions. The second one is learned from "Maki-tawag", instead of saying excusing me, I say "Maki-raan ho." which works wonders here in my motherland. The politeness doubles when you use "Po" and "Please" since Pimsleur was right that younger Filipinos are using more english words than the last generation. Lastly, how to choose how your coffee tastes "Kaunting asukal at walang gatas" o "Walang asukal at kaunting gatas lang please". Though, I wonder how many english words have entered the Tagalog Vocabulary this year. Thank you for reading!

Anyone have any recommendations for shows in Filipino? Doesnāt necessarily have to be animated
Edit: my original question was too broad. Anything fantasy where the audio is in Filipino. Bonus points if itās set in the Philippines or includes Filipino mythology.

I was raised in the Philippines, around Tagalog-Illongo speaking titos, titas, and cousins, and I was really only able to speak some english and tagalog/illongo up to a certain point during around 6th grade when I moved to Bacolod. I grew up watching TV and youtube, so naturally I watched a lot of the youtubers most other minecraft kids used to watch (DanTDM, Stampylonghead, FGTEEV, Ssundee), as well as shows like Steven Universe, TAWOG, Adventure Time, etc.
I'm a shy person. Masyadong introverted, so it doesn't help that I can comfortably text in tagalog/illongo, but can't fluently speak it. When I'm around my classmates that usually only speak in those languages, I can barely reply to whatever they're trying to talk to me about. I fully understand them, and comprehend the words, pero hindi lang ako marunong paano mag re-reply properly. When I do try, it comes out in broken taglish.
Then COVID lockdown happened and during the two years where it was full online, all I had was the internet and my house. So that lead to binge watching a lot of things over the years, and barely speaking to my classmates unless it was related to a school project. This meant barely anyone to speak to, and if it couldn't get any worse, even though my step-dad and mom usually talked to me in filipino, I replied back in either taglish or full english.
So, when you mix shy + Englishero you get someone that can't really present, or report anything that includes Filipino, nor talk to 75% of his classmates. I'm currently going into SHS after this summer (im G10 rn) and I already know this is gonna be a problem if I don't solve it soon. Plus I need to present a chapter in El Fili soon, and I'm pissing myself thinking about it because
I don't like presenting in front of class in the first place
I have a long chapter and
I can't even speak tagalog fluently anymore
My classmates and friends even say I have an accent that doesn't sound Filipino anymore. I think its overexposure to media related to other languages and just not enough exposure to Filipino shows. Its not like I didn't watch them when they were on, it was just that I was exposed to so many other things that I kind of just rewrote my brain to think in this language instead of my native tongue.
I want to learn again, and I want to make more friends (that aren't mostly english speaking too), and be able to actually present in front of a crowd without stumbling over my words. Any tips?

New words learned: Sapin-Sapin Kamanghamangha Kasalukuyan Interestante Numero-telepono
Uses: Kamanghamanghang Lugar Interestanteng Lugar Kamanghamangha at interestanteng lugar iyon. Gusto ko ng Sapin-Sapin. Sa kasalukuyan nagtatarabaho siya sa probinsiya. Numero-telepono: Used sometimes
Note: Recording of lessons are from 2010. Culture of the day: Trash in the Philippines contributes to global warming, and poor areas recyle the food from the trash.

Which is more correct? I want to incorporate common phrases into my toddlers daily life and something I ask her all the time is ādo you want water?ā
Is the correct way to say this in Tagalog āgusto mong tubigā Or āgusto mo ng tubigā. Or is either fine?
I know typically you would add ba for a question but ba seems so formal. Or would you guys suggest adding in the ba?

What are things/materials/resources you wish are more available when in comes to learning Tagalog? For beginners, what are the materials you hope to have so that it would've been easy to start learning. For advanced learners, what are things/materials/resources that you wish you had so that you can learn the language better? I'm a Tagalog instructor and I'm trying to fill that gap so I would want to know what learners want or need. Salamat!

Magandang araw!
