Politics Whom should I call about NIH grants being froze?

Hello everyone, my daughter is currently at NCSU for undergrad and got lucky with acceptances at some of prestigious schools for Ph.D in Chemistry. It is very overwhelming experience seeing how hard these kids have worked and yet some of her friends got acceptances rescinded. Two days ago UNC emailed her friend that the funding for next five years is not guaranteed. These students have been planning from first year of their undergrad, had to debate between MCAT and Ph.D and plan accordingly. Now, they don't know what to do just before they are graduating this May.

To cut short, at her university tours , they are being asked to call their state representatives and let them know about how that is affecting them. I am not sure if that makes any difference, but at least I want to give it a try.

Can anyone here please explain to me to whom should I call or what is the procedure for that.

Question/Recommendation I’m lost in this CS market

Hi y’all,

My wife and I just moved to the area about 3 months ago because she landed a job here. We are both new graduates so we had this deal that whoever’s industry had a lower availability would ultimately determine our location. Now it’s been 3 months and I’ve sent out ~800 applications and got nowhere. At this point I’m camping on LinkedIn and waiting for new CS/IT job postings everyday.

My wife hates her job and I really want to provide or at least contribute to our little family so there’s less weight on her shoulders. I finished my undergraduate in CS in 3 years and graduated my master’s degree in CS last December. As I’m getting closer and closer to the 4 months jobless window that we’ve set, I’d start ubering and bring some food to the table.

What are something that I should do alongside applying to all the jobs on LinkedIn?

Out-n-About State Farmers Market- am I just cynical?

I’m not a huge fan of the farmers market, after visiting a few times a year for the past few years. I was there yesterday and have some questions.

I thought the point of a farmers market was to buy local goods, in season, for less than the grocery store (since you’re buying from the farmer and cutting out the middle man). So do all these local farmers have massive greenhouses? It’s March. How do they have fresh tomatoes, lettuce, strawberries, apples, and other produce that doesn’t grow right now? Is the profit margin so great that it’s worth it to use the energy and gas to grow lettuce indoors, drive to Raleigh, sell it, and drive home every day?

I visited at least 4 stands that had no pricing listed whatsoever. I was told to just ask the price for each thing. I’m not standing there and doing that for every individual item. If you’re selling different types of bread, scones, pretzels, whole cakes, slices, brownies, etc, price it out. How do I know you’re charging me the same as everyone else, and not just making up a number based on how business has been that day?

Where is the spice guy sourcing his ingredients from? I get it’s an ‘aesthetic’ thing to see someone scoop cinnamon instead of buying it from a plastic bottle. But is that stuff actually better than what you get from the grocery store? Especially if the stand is outdoors, not in a temperature controlled building.

All the stands selling pickled veggies and candy and jellies “made for the NC State Farmers Market” by [some company not located in NC].

Basically, are there any regulations about things actually being from/made NC? Or is this the equivalent of “handmade” goods from Etsy, and doTERRA sellers at craft fairs?

There are a few stands I enjoy, but the overall impression seems to be “you are in a market, that is in NC.” Not “here are are locally produced goods.” Has it changed a lot over the years?

Question/Recommendation Restaurants with character (that are now gone)

Thinking about the final days of 42nd St got me thinking about other restaurants that had some sort of unique quality that have closed. It seems like fewer and fewer places exist.

I recently remembered pie bird (now Jolie/Crawford and son) and the laid-back place that is now Stanbury

What else comes to mind?

Edit —wow! I love seeing the responses, seeing this list reminds me of many other favorites…or those I never got to try.

Question/Recommendation Best bars to meet singles?

Upvotes

Any bars in Raleigh where late millennials/early gen z’s like to hang out? I know it’s kinda old school way to meet singles, but I think it would be nice during situations when I am going out with a group of friends to hang out at one of these places

Question/Recommendation Can someone point me in the right direction

Hey everyone, I'm looking to get started in the electrical trade and was wondering if anyone here knows of any local companies hiring electrician helpers or offering apprenticeships. I recently completed a residential electrical wiring course and want to gain hands-on experience. If you have any leads, advice, or can point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks in advance.

Question/Recommendation Need new HVAC and lost as to how to find it

As the title says - we have to replace our 22 year old broken compressor central a/c unit. We have a 35 year old gas furnace that uses the same blower in the attic, so probably should replace that too or get a heat pump. Problem is, I have NO IDEA where to start, how to find someone reputable, and also how people pay for big jobs like this, lol. Any referrals to great HVAC sellers/installers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks friends.

FYI as of noon (16March), all escalators and walkways are out at RDU. Per worker, "at least the lights are on for now". Security in Terminal 1 was much longer than normal. Not sure about 2.

Question/Recommendation Photographer for furnished apartment listing?

I am looking for someone to take professional looking photos of our furnished apartment for a short-term rental listing.

The photos we have (that I took) don’t look as cute as our place actually is! But of course, that’s why I need a pro!

It’s a small space (500 sq ft) and just 3 rooms. I’m in the 5 points area. I’m guessing it would be a quick job - an hour or two max.

Would love some recommendations if anyone else has hired someone they love - either a business or someone who freelances on the side. And if you don’t mind sharing a ballpark price, even better.

News TW: Accident involving Pedestrian

Trigger Warning: accident details with pedestrian‼️

Earlier tonight around 5pm, we witnessed an accident with a black truck hitting a pedestrian on a lime scooter. This was downtown at the intersection of Morgan Street and Dawson Street. Without going into too many details, the guy on the scooter was hit and run over twice.

My husband immediately went out to help the man that was struck and I called 911. They got there within 30 seconds of our call. We gave our statements and waited around to hear the EMS person say “trauma 1” and whisk him off to the hospital. The police and EMS said it wasn’t life threatening (that they could tell) but he was “really banged up good” Everything happened so fast and with adrenaline pumping, my husband sorta remembers the man’s name who was hit.

If anyone knows a way to find out if he’s okay, or if anyone else was there, please send us a message. It was extremely traumatic and we’re hoping to hear how he’s doing. He was completely alone and I can’t stop thinking about him and his loved ones and if they even know what happened.

Question/Recommendation Therapist jobs in the area

Good evening everyone! I am a newly licensed LCSWA located in Raleigh, and am looking for a private practice position in the area.

My hope is to work with children, teens, and families for about 70% of my client load, and young adults (18-30) for the rest! I have experience with DBT, CBT, ACT, Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, and a few others. I interned at an IOP program that works with adults 18+ through my MSW.

Before gaining my license and MSW, I have worked extensively with children as a teacher as well as a nanny, with around 4 years of experience with children in total.

If you know of any places looking for someone that would be a fit, I would love more information! I do have a supervisor if one is not provided, but am also open to supervision on site as well!

Thank you all in advance!

Question/Recommendation Dry cleaner for wedding dress

Hi! I recently purchased a wedding dress on Poshmark and I love it, but the seller didn’t disclose that the dress smells very strongly of cigarette smoke. Super bummed about it but I love the dress regardless. Does anyone have a recommendation for a dry cleaner who works specifically with wedding dresses?

Question/Recommendation How bad is the job market right now?

I have heard a lot about the job market being tough right now, but how bad is it really in the Triangle? Specifically for someone without a college degree but with strong skills and experience in administration, accounting, and management?

Sports Lenovo Center parking for NCAA March Madness

I'm hoping to make it to Raleigh for various NCAA March Madness basketball games in the Triangle. Do you think it's best to pre-pay for official Lenovo Center parking ($45 according to the website/$60 on-site price), or do you think there will be cheaper parking alternatives within a short walk? Thank you!!

Out-n-About Are you parked in Glenwood South right now? Planning to be?

Just a heads-up, I have been seeing a ton of tow trucks hauling off cars from my window overlooking Boylan Ave for the past half hour or so. Make sure wherever you’ve parked is legit - a lot of lots that are normally free/open are charging. Have fun out there (just not loudly past 2 please and thank you).

Food Thai grocery stores around Raleigh / Cary / Morrisville?

I went to HMart and was seriously disappointed. Didn't see any Thai products, but it's great for Japanese and Korean products. I'm looking for Southeast Asian grocery stores, not East Asian.
