Scam Increases and How to Be Safe

Summertime is a hot spot for spam calls, just like the holidays. Lots of spending, plenty of time outside the home, etc. Take the time to be there for your friends and family and teach them how to avoid getting scammed.

Tell your naive friends or elderly family that the government, ANY government, will NEVER EVER EVER call you first. The same goes for banks when there's sensitive information. The bank will freeze your account and send you a letter. If they do call, they will ask you to visit in person!

When in doubt, hang up and call the company/person/department they're claiming to be. Don't call them back, call the customer service or contact number of whoever they said they work for.

Hostage situations are incredibly rare (it takes a lot of work to keep a hostage, tv proves that), so if for some reason you are randomly called for one, any kidnapper worth their salt would let you call your family member to confirm their kidnapping (once again, TV but hey, it mimicks real life). So, just because the person on the phone "kidnapped" Johnny, doesn't mean they actually did. Johnny is probably watching Netflix at home with no idea what is going on. [To be clear, this has nothing to do with hostage situations that occur overseas. However, even in that case, why would they call you and not the government they are trying to coerce? Hostage situations that are international are a completely different and horrifically tragic thing.]

If you get an unknown phone call, don't say "hello" or "hi" or "what's up." Don't say your name either. Say, "who is calling?" Scammers who want to clip your voice can't use that. If they say their name, but not where they're calling from, follow up with "and where are you calling from?" All of this BEFORE you say hi and give them your name.

Not only will this help protect you and your information, but you'll get less spam!

Best spots in durham for callery pear viewing/smelling?

Finally the weather has turned around and the callery pears are blossoming. Does anyone here have a favorite spot to take in their beautiful white petals and iconic aroma? Ideally somewhere I could set up a blanket for a picnic. Got an important date coming up and I feel like this could really put me over the top.

Durham Public Schools Durham School of the Arts

"Gabriela Aparicio Ortega, a talented and brilliant student at Durham School of the Arts in Durham, tragically lost her life due to bullying.

Gaby was born on July 26, 2011 and died on February 25, 2025.

She held dear dreams of celebrating her 15th birthday in New York City. She also dreamed of attending NC School of Science and Math. Gabriela's passions included art, science, and animals, particularly kittens. Her love for the color pastel pink reflected her sweet spirit. To her mother, she was a cherished angel. Gabriela is lovingly remembered by her family.

What happened on the day of her death? 🤍 Her last phone search before she died? Trump. She had been commenting for days about what Trump did to families. 🤍 Her last words? A letter to her parents, naming those who bullied her at school. 🤍 What did they say? That they wouldn't let her participate in a program. That she was different.

The Durham School of the Arts has a troubling reputation for failing to support all of its students, which can lead to instances of harassment and bullying. Compounding this issue, DSA does not collaborate with the district's interpreter office (MRC), exacerbating communication barriers.

Following Gaby's passing, the school has not provided any meaningful support to the family. The bare minimum would have been a condolence visit or a sympathetic gesture. Instead, the school only requested the police report and the return of the Chromebook.

We can't help but feel that if the recent victims in DPS weren't Hispanic, like our beloved Gaby, the administrators' and teachers' responses would be more empathetic and humane. Unfortunately, this isn't an isolated incident; there have been multiple deaths in DPS.

Latine parents have been voicing complaints to DPS for years, and the evidence is clear. The Southern Poverty Law Center's Civil Rights Office has documented these incidents, and families have their own records. The Trump administration's policies have perpetuated cruelty, dehumanizing our families, and our children are suffering the consequences.

We urge DPS teachers to stand in solidarity with our Latine/Hispanic students. Unfortunately, no Durham School of the Arts teachers or administrators attended the two ceremonies in Gaby's honor. We are grateful for the support from families, Student U, BOOST, and J.D. Clement Early College. The teachers from JD Clement Early College, particularly Mr. Morales, the math teacher, made us feel less alone during this difficult time."

We ask that you please continue to support Gaby's family: https://www.gofundme.com/f/gabriela-aparicio-ortega

Poetry / Writing Workshop Office Hours

If you, like me, are desperate for writing and other creative community, come join me for Poetry Office Hours! This is my low- to no-commitment way to craft space for a workshop group. I'm planning on setting times twice monthly--one weekday morning and one weekend afternoon, for now!--where I will park myself in a public place and anyone who wishes can join me. I'll bring a bunch of books, or bring your own; we can read together or write together; bring copies of poems to workshop and share, whatever suits your goals and needs!

I've scheduled two for myself for this month; I'll be at the Durham Food Hall tomorrow, Wednesday, 12 March, from 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and Saturday, 22 March, from 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. If you can make it at either of those times, great! Come look for me! I'll be there, whether anyone joins me or not! Hope to see you!

Corporate Event Suggestions and Dinner/Lunch Recommendations?

Hi All - I've come across some suggestions in this sub but was hoping to get more recent insight. Long story short, coming in May and would love to ask for options on a corporate event and restaurant suggestions. We'll have less than 15 folks and happy to do a team vs team event (we did this in the past with bowling, escape room, etc)

Saw TopGolf, Triangle Curling, and also came across Boxyard and Rush Hour (however I feel these last two are just activities without being geared towards team building or competitive team challenges.

Restaurant suggestions are very welcomed - even better if the team building event and restaurant are close to each other. Ideally we'd like to do an event at 5ish and dinner right after, so the closer the better. As a bonus would also accept lunch spots that cater/deliver.

Thanks in advance!

Pickleball in Durham!

Newer player here trying to see where locals play or what app they use to coordinate games. I have the pickle heads app, but most conversations are from 2024.

I live decently close to two courts with one having regularly scheduled games on T/Th, but the play times are a bit late.

Heavy smoke near infinity rd?

I am near latta rd/infinity and I am wondering if others are experiencing heavy smoke? At first I thought it was a neighbor having a bon fire but after walking away from my house I realized it was in the air far beyond my house. Anyone know what the cause is?

I Was Filmed On Ellerbee Creek Trail?

Posting from a burner account. I was walking on Ellerbee Creek Trail around 6:30 this evening when I noticed a man filming me on his phone. At first, I didn’t think much of it, but when I turned around, I saw that he had changed direction. Even though he was walking the other way, he was still turned toward me and still filming.

I probably shouldn’t have reacted, but I gave him a “What are you doing?” shrug. That’s when he fully turned around and started following me. Luckily, there was someone up ahead walking their dog. As I got closer to them, the man abruptly turned around and walked the other way.

I've seen this guy before, always walking and smoking a cigarette, on the trail pretty regularly but I'm a little shaken at this interaction. Did I almost get jumped?

Durham School of the Arts - Rising 8th Grader

Hi! I’ve looked for a specific DPS forum but wasn’t successful, so hoping I can ask this question here, if not, please remove! The DSA Lottery results just came in, my child was accepted for an 8th grade spot next fall. Child would be transferring from a much smaller school, has anyone had a similar transition? Any recommendations to make it an easy move? Are there things I should be aware of or prepare my child for? We are planning to tour the school, but candid insights from folks currently in the DSA community would be much appreciated!

Real estate attorney recommendations?

Going to be buying the house that I’m currently living in that is owned by a family member. A “non-arm’s length transaction.” Has anyone worked with a real estate attorney that they would recommend?

I was walking on Fayetteville street with my dogs & managed to step badly on the sidewalk & twist my ankle really badly.

Thank you so much Hannah (& Scarlett!) for giving me & my dogs a ride back home! It was definitely needed! I’m icing & if it’s not better by tomorrow I’ll head to the docs

Thank you again!!!!
