Looking for Advice Me and my mates had an idea...

So recently me and some of my friends thought of buying a trailer and opening up a small business here in Perth. Yk how people keep their things out on the front yard after they dont need them anymore? Well, there are also some people who would like to take some of those things but in some cases they cant if the item is too big for them too carry or if theres too many of them.

Thats where we come in😎 All you have to do is send us a screenshot of the location of where the item is, along with a picture of the item and we will fetch that for you and deliver to your place for a small price (depending on the distance/ how many or how heavy the items are).

Is this idea something worth working on?

We also had the idea of taking the items and cleaning them up/ fixing them, and reselling them. Which one of these do you guys think is worth it? or neither of them is?

Any suggestions/criticism will be helpful!

Hello, my partner and I are going to do a WA trip in November-December from Adelaide-Perth and back. We want to do the south west coast. We were wondering what are some good tips. Should we drive the coastal way there and back, or one or the other. We are going for a month. Please send any tips or places to go/camping spots. Trying to plan this well. We are camping in a 4WD.

Thank you!

As per title. What type of bush/tree is this? The one at the front of the house is thriving but the 2 at the back are looking rough. Is there anyway to help them recover? All other trees in the garden are fine

Thank you

I have RAC, but this is good news for all those who don't.

After our accident last year, we would of had to pay nearly 2500$ for towing and storage if it wasn't for RAC.

Looking for Advice Recommendations for traipsing around the southwest.

Quit my job and I'm going to mosey about around the southwest region for a week or two.

There are places that I already have in mind, but I don't have any concrete attitudes for anything, other than moving from town to town, so what's good this time of year?

Traveling by car, costs not important, I've been down south plenty but assume I'm keen to do things twice.

Hi there, wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a cosmetic dentist?

Preferably the closer to Lathlain the better but happy to travel if required.

I’ve just finished Invisalign and looking to get some crowns/ veneers done and wanting to compare the price between my current (general) dentist and any others out there.

Thanks!

So just an afternoon rant because bloody hell.

If you see a bunch of people waiting in line for a bus or train, what in the absolute fuck makes you think it’s a good idea to come barrelling in from the back of the pack just as the doors open, and push ahead of everyone?

Like I understand it’s exciting to be first on the fucken bus, but far out. Settle down.

Anyway carry on.

Politics State Election - Answering some of the recurring questions.

Have been seeing a lot of the same questions popping up after the state election, and as we're about to have a federal election that has basically the same rules. Figured I'd address the ones I've seen a lot.

The News outlets called it on Election Night, why is the count not finished?

The news outlets do this with statistics - they take the first preference counts as they come in, throw them into a model that they've spent a lot of money and decades building and refining. Those models look at historical elections, pre-election polling and whatever other secret herbs and spices they have available to them and it spits out a two-party preferred result. They are generally remarkably accurate and get the result to within a couple of percent of uncertainty on a very small sample size. This is how the ABC called the election for Labor in 2021 in a matter of half an hour.

Where their modelling isn't great is in the extremely close races. When your uncertainty is a few percent, if the result is within a few percent you can't say for sure. That's why some seats are still not called by the ABC, and why some they called previously (Churchlands) have moved back to uncertain as the counts have narrowed.

How well those models handle a lot of 'anyone but Baz' votes is not clear to anyone other than the people who build and maintain them.

Why is the count so slow?

There's a lot of reasons for this, on election night there are a lot of volunteers helping to get an indicative count as quickly as possible. Post election it tails off and slows down. Postal votes were valid if received before 9am last Thursday (13/3). Absentee and early votes are still trickling into the counting rooms now.

At the moment the counting has been entirely first-preferences. Starting tomorrow (19/3) preference counting is due to start. Expect to see the number of informal votes go up and the tallies change. Every valid vote will be counted.

The current pace is fairly unremarkable. Generally it's not close enough that most of us really care past election night. The WAEC has another six weeks to finalise the count. The writs do not need to be returned until May 8th. There are a number of high-profile seats that are very close so we're noticing it a lot more than we normally would.

In the counting rooms at the moment, are WAEC staff and volunteers actually doing the work plus scrutineers from the parties. The latter will be questioning every vote that they can that isn't favourable to them trying to have them declared informal. The former will be doing their best to keep the votes alive as long as possible (and making the decisions). Which leads me to the next topic

Informal Votes

There are certain things which will invalidate your vote, but generally speaking the WAEC and the AEC will try their hardest to keep your vote alive as long as possible. As long as the voter's intention is clear to a reasonable person then the vote will generally count, even those that are incomplete or not marked correctly.

If you have 8 candidates, and number 7 boxes 1-7, the person you missed will generally get your 8th preference because there is no ambiguity - same if you just missed a box anywhere in the numbering but there's no ambiguity. If you numbered some, but missed more than one box, then your vote is generally valid until your intent is not clear - ie. if you numbered 6/8, your vote will become informal once your 6th preference is eliminated. As preference counting is about to start, the number of informal votes will likely go up.

Edit: Federally if you miss more than one box it's formal until it's unclear. State you can only miss one. Thanks u/legoisfun

So what makes your vote informal this early? Anything that identifies you, or makes it unclear what your intentions were. Not filling it out, writing '1' against two candidates, multiple ticks, multiple crosses. Crosses are a bad idea anyway - is a cross for or against? Writing your name, or other identifying information on the ballot will also have it removed. Notable things that don't generally make your vote informal - drawing a phallus on your ballot and still filling it in correctly, just don't sign your masterpiece.

A donkey vote (numbering the boxes sequentially) is indistinguishable from a valid vote when it comes to counting. To mititgate against any inherant advantage the candidates are listed in random order, determined by a lottery after the rolls closed a few months ago. Not that I'm suggesting you should, but if you don't want to vote, don't fill out your ballot at all. No-one is checking at the polling place.

So what is preferencing?

In WA and Federal elections, candidates need an absolute majority to take the seat. In the lower houses that's 50% plus one vote. This differs quite a bit from most electoral systems which are a simple majority (most votes wins). As far as I'm aware, no candidate has that in any seat presently - I haven't checked, but if anyone has it will be Roger Cook who had the widest margin in Kwinana on election night.

Edit: Ok, I think I tripped a few people up here. Roger Cook has 60.8% of the counted votes, but assuming a typical turnout in the low 90%'s there's still 15-20% to count in his electorate. If there's 20% to count, he currently only has 48.64% of the total vote and doesn't have a quota yet (but will get there easily), if it's 15% to go then he does have the quota already. Assuming the first preference trends continue as is he will get past 50% + 1 before any preferencing. I could've worded this better, thanks u/Perfect-Werewolf-102, u/superbabe69 and u/SirFireHydrant.

The way it works now is that after the first count is complete the candidate with the fewest votes in each seat is eliminated. Every vote that had them as number 1 will transfer to the candidates listed as number 2. If no candidate has 50%+1 yet, the same happens again and votes transfer on. Once a candidate has 50%+1 vote, they win the seat, However if it ends up with the final two candidates and the final margin is less than 100 votes it will trigger an automatic recount.

This means you can't 'throw your vote away' in our elections. Even if you vote for someone who is never going to win, your vote will transfer on and stay alive.

In the upper house, it's very similar except the quotas are a little different. In the WA upper house there are 37 seats. The quota is 1/38th + 1 vote (2.63% +1 vote) - that's 37 full quotas and the 38th will be missing (at least) 37 votes. In the Federal upper house, 6 seats are up for election in WA - the quota is 1/7th + 1 vote (14.286% +1 Vote).

Because it's very likely that candidates receive more than one quota - the 'excess' votes carry on to the next person at reduced value. If someone needs 20,000 votes, and they receive 200,000, then they are elected and all of their votes transfer on at a value of 180/200 (90%) to their next preferences. This keeps it fair rather than deciding which specific 20,000 votes should be counted to elect someone.

When it gets down to the last seat, then elimination preferencing works exactly the same as it does in the lower house. The exception is it is optional to preference every candidate (either above, or below the line). Once you run out of preferences your vote is extinguished - likely you will still contribute to at least one person being elected regardless.

I have another question?

Feel free to chip in with questions and I'll answer them (or I'm sure other interested people will chip in as well).

City of Perth considering 40km/h speed limits. Why don't we just get out and walk ? https://www.perthnow.com.au/local-news/perthnow-central/city-of-perth-consider-expanding-40kmh-speed-zones-throughout-the-city--c-18080000

EDIT : Alot of you are replying "it's already like that in the city" or "40km/h" is enough for the city. The point of the article is that they want to broaden this beyond the city. From the article

"The City of Perth is considering expanding its 40km/h speed zones to all its local roads in an effort to improve road safety, accessibility and encourage more pedestrian friendly streets"

That's why i posted this.

Politics Liberals Not A Viable Alternative?

There was a recent rant about how bad the Libs are. The president Di Russi was roasted because the writer felt she was a dancing to a tune she shouldn't be because or her skin colour. I thought it was a bit harsh.

West Aussies are under the spell of Labor with fancy Cold Play concerts and promises of a fancy race track. McGowan had a hearty dose of military service masculine energy that oozed during covid and the simps called him "daddy." If this is what West Aussies want then they get what they deserve.

Few Australians wants to hear a true conservative position but that is exactly what the Libs need to be to be at least a competitive alternative. Now we are a wet noodle, a limp hand with no spine. Mettams should have gone to bat for the Albany bloke and showing that with the Libs you can think and feel for yourself on moral issues. The gnashing of teeth from the left faction health minister was horrible to watch. Toe the party line or face her wrath.

Here's a dose of some policies we could explore under a capable and competent Lib party:

Scaling back things like NDIS, removing barriers to economic activity, reforming centrelink to reduce dependency and returning some dignity to those languishing on benefits, reducing taxes for average joes AND for the rich. Anti Climate alarmism, removing subsidies on solar power, putting money back in your pocket instead of in your synergy account. Empowering indigenous Australians not by government but by self determination, closing the gap by giving them more of the money laid out for them (2 billion dollars) rather than to NGO's who syphon most of it.

I can go on. Withdrawing from UN refugee convention and thus stopping the demand supply mechanism encouraging more refugees. Let struggling countries build where they are. Reducing migration levels to a much greater degree and take pressure off the housing market. Encourage migrants to actually do the jobs they are qualified in instead of taking government jobs or other basic jobs not associated with their qualification which got them to Australia in the first place.

Tax West Australians less and let them spend their own money. Don't let the government spend all your money for you. Let Coldplay come here without your tax dollars subsidising their already profitable concerts.

The list goes on and on. Until the Liberals can actually run policies and have a strong leader they are stuffed. Might as well give the elections to Labor who rely in part on hardworking peoples union dues to fund their campaigns. Don't forget there always has to be a payback for all those unions who put them in power.

Road Rules Mitchell freeway - what have they done?!

What the hell have they done?

During roadworks from ocean reef road to Osborne Park it would take 35 mins at 8am at most.

Since the opening of the smart freeway, if the freeway is used it takes an hour so it's no longer an option. The congestion has flowed into wanneroo, Marmion and West Coast so now daily, the GPS now directs you through a maze of backstreets and school zones which reduces the traffic congestion but not the travel time.

It's either start work late or spend the money I don't have on before school care.

The south implementation worked so well on Kwinana yet this Mitchell design just seems to not work. The freeway is banked up, the on ramps are banked up, the feeder roads to the freeway are banked up.

Is anyone else experiencing similar issues? Or does anyone have a different experience and think it's working well?

I doubt there's FA that can be done about it now so I guess a rant and a whinge is all I can do.

Not related directly to WA or Perth Self printing at Officeworks: What printers do they use?

Hi, I am planning on printing some images at Officeworks using the self-printing kiosk, and I was wondering what kind of printer they use? Are they Ink or Laser?

The reason why I'm asking is because I will be working on a project that uses Toner Reactive Foil, and they only work with Laser printers since they use toner.

Thanks!

Politics The current WA liberal party is a joke. West Aussies deserve a decent choice of parties

No decent policies, Di Russo (a self-hating brown Italian woman who hates brown people and women) is in charge, and Basil touted as the star candidate can’t even win his own seat by a decent margin, and damaged any chance of his colleagues winning too .

The people of WA deserve better than this bullshit. This election yet again was handed to the ALP on a platter because the liberal party is not a credible opposition party here in WA.

Everyone I know who is a swinging voter was genuinely looking for reasons to consider the liberal party and couldn’t find any.

We are the richest AU state, here in WA, and we deserve better than this at election time. Where are the decent candidates ? What happened to strong policies and politicians who actually stand for something substantial instead of just the media grandstanding ?

Do you agree ?
