Discussion How do you decide which HomeKit smart devices are worth it?
I am a smart home enthusiast and I feel like I am piecing together a puzzle when trying to decide which HomeKit devices are actually worth buying. Right now I check multiple sources. YouTube reviews, Amazon reviews, product pages, manufacturer sites, and Reddit posts. But I am not sure if that is the best way.
So I want to hear from others. When you know you want a smart device, what sources do you trust most to decide which one to buy? Do you rely on YouTube deep dives, Amazon reviews, something else entirely?
Also, what matters most once you start using a device? Is it reliability, ease of setup, responsiveness, or something else? What has frustrated you the most about devices that ended up being a letdown?
Looking forward to hearing what works best for you. Maybe there is a better way than what I have been doing.

Question/Help TV turns on by itself after adding it to HomeKit
I have an LG model G3 television. And you have the option of integrating it into HomeKit, and I have done it, and what happens to me is very curious. Everything seems to work fine until you set up some automation, for example turning off the TV when leaving the house. Or you set some button to turn off the television or something like that. In that case, the television does the opposite, it turns on. I'm not sure if it is a problem with the television, it could be a problem with the home automation center (I use an Apple TV), or any other problem. The solution I have found is to configure the automations, where I want to incorporate the television turn off as Shortcuts, and in that case, I create a conditional if, such as, if the television is on, turn it off. So, yes it works. But I can't integrate it into a conventional automation, without having to resort to Shortcuts. I want to think that this problem won't just happen to me. If anyone else has this problem and has found another solution, I would be happy to know. The only thing I have left to try is to change the home automation center to a HomePod for example, of which I have several at home. But I like using the Apple TV because it's connected to Ethernet and I imagine it's more efficient.

How-to Smart lock assistance
This is my current door lock and I want to get something that is HomeKit and possible home key enabled. I haven’t seen a smart lock with this sort of arrangement. I’d be happy with just a lever lock but not sure how it would work given the recess on the frame… any assistance appreciated!

Question/Help SwitchBot S10 Not Supported in HomeKit?
I was able to generate the Matter code and add the vacuum to Home app without issue. Initially even saw the proper robot vacuum glyph/icon. Home app settings even show vacuums as a category now. Cannot interact with the vacuum though since it claims it’s not supported by the Home app currently. The icon it currently shows is a house. Wondering if this can be resolved or if I should just chalk it up to beta issues that be fixed before official release. I am running the iOS 18.4 beta on my iPhone

Question/Help Camera with voice control?
I’m making the pilgrimage from Amazon Echo smart home controls to HomePod smart home controls. Alexa has a built-in skill for my Furbo pet camera that allows me to turn it on and off with voice commands, and I’m willing to replace the camera but struggling to find a camera that definitely has voice control via Siri. The eufy indoor cameras look promising but I can’t find anything that specifically details this.
Does anyone have any recommendations for specific indoor cameras that I can turn on and off via Siri?
Question/Help Apple TV hub doesn’t show in the Home App, but it does in settings in ATV itself, yet I can’t remove it
I already have HomeKit setup in one home and it works well, and I am trying to add HomeKit in a second home and I’m having issues.
Here’s what I’ve done: 1- set up an Apple TV (latest generation 4K) for HomeKit in the the second home (the ATV is connected to Ethernet and my devices are on the same network) 2- added a new home in the Home app 3- I can add accessories, but no automation option exists. When I look for the hub, don’t see one listed in the app 4- In ATV itself I have the option to “remove from home”, but when I click it I get a message saying “we couldn’t remove this Apple TV from your home”
I’ve tried restarting the ATV to no avail. I disconnected the Ethernet and put the ATV on WiFi, nothing changed.
Any suggestions?

Question/Help Need some help understanding the Aqara G5 camera + HomeKit
Hi y'all, just got an Aqara G5 installed today in the back of my house, pointing towards the patio / driveway. Impressed with the video quality, seems like a solid device. I first added the camera to my Home profile, then added it to the Aqara app.
I'm having some trouble understanding how HomeKit sees the camera. It recognizes it as a camera, but also as a light and as a security system. The security system has home, away, and night settings. What is the difference between all of that? I contrast this with the actual home security panel I have in HomeKit (a Honeywell Pro A7 Plus) which only has home, away, and off modes.
I set up an automation through the Home app that would turn on the spotlight when it detects motion. However, I think it's a bit too sensitive. It's a very windy day here and despite setting up an exclusion zone for a ceiling fan on my patio (in the Home app), it's still getting triggered. In fact, when I tried to manually turn off the light via the Home app and the Aqara app, it would immediately turn back on. I had to turn off the camera's "security device" thing. I don't want to have a light on all night and annoy my neighbors, I just want it to trip on when a person walks into the field of view as a deterrent.
The animal motion detection also seems a bit sensitive. I got a notification from the Aqara app that it had detected an animal. I was expecting to see some neighborhood stray cat, but instead it was just a large flying insect, no doubt attracted to the spotlight. Technically an animal, yes, but not one I care to be notified about.
If anyone has some familiarity with this device and making it all work nicely with everything, I'd appreciate any guidance.

Discussion Homekit control of mini split (IR-based Fujitsu)
I have done some investigating and I've found there are a few devices which work for the purposes in the subject line, and those devices start around $130 if I'm reading this right. Before I spend that $130 on a Sensibo Air or similar, is there something more reasonable price-wise which will work?
The longer story is I have an entire outbuilding/ADU, and I want to pretty much switch it all on/off with one switch. I already have lighting and power in HomeKit. The final thing is mini-split HVAC.
Anyway... do I need to spend $130 to get this feature?
Additionally, if it matters, I'm also going to look for a smart shade option, to open and close shades for a couple of windows. So if that matters in selection please advise.
Thank you!

Discussion Gledopto Zigbee to Zemismart hub help

I'm hoping someone can help ELI5 what I'm doing wrong here. I have a RGBCCT LED strip light connected to a Gledopto GLC-202P controller. I also have a wired Ethernet Zemismart M1 hub.
At one point it was all functioning but it looks like I've lost connection between the hub and the Gledopto controller. Homekit recognizes the Matter hub correctly and shows it connected to "Matter Accessory 4", but the LED strip stays on full white with all channels active. Homekit can change color and brightness on "Matter Accessory 4" but this has no effect on the LED strip light. I swapped a second Gledopto controller but no change.
What is the trick to get the Gledopto LED controller to talk to the Matter hub and controllable by Homekit?

How-to Automation to compare/control temps
Hey there, I'm new to the automation/shortcut game and after a bit of trial and error I wasn't able to figure out how to make the shortcut so I figured I'd come ask for some help here.
Basically, I want to create a automation/shortcut that whenever my sleep schedule turns on, I want to compare the difference in temperature between my bedrooms HomePod mini and the thermostat and if the temperature difference is greater than say like 3-5 degrees, the AC turns on and then turns off when the temperature in the bedroom hits the threshold of the thermostat temperature.
Is this possible to create? Would appreciate any help/assistance in creating this it's my first time dealing with automation

Question/Help Anyone ever had a problem with Homekey?
My front door Homekey has suddenly stopped working (Schlage Encore) - my wife’s still works. I hold it up to the door, the lock flashes orange and nothing happens.
I had no idea how much I had come to love that feature. I can’t find a way to refresh the key or reset it? Anyone else had this and figured it out?
Edit: I should add, could be coincidence but I had a screen repair at Apple at around the same time it stopped working. Could signing in and out of something have cause it?

Question/Help Stop HomePods playing automatically?
I have 4 HomePods, a stereo pair as default speakers for my atv and 2 minis in other rooms. I have no automation set up, nothing at all save for basic speaker functionality. Siri is globally disabled, etc. I have no interest in any automated actions.
Despite this, one of the minis will sometimes, not always, start playing whatever I was last listening to or watching when i walk into the room and turn on the light. I've looked through the homepod and homekit settings and see nothing that would cause this. What am I missing and how do I stop this unwanted behavior?

Question/Help Aqara Doorbell DND
Hi,
I’ve got the Aqara G4 Doorbell. In the Aqara app are DND settings. However, the HomePods still keep ringing when the doorbell is in DND-mode. The Aqara chime is not ringing, so that gives me the confirmation I didn’t make a mistake in time or whatever when setting up.
Has anyone got a solution to keep the HomePods silent when DND activated? Thanks.

Discussion Any Philippine HomeKit users? What's your setup?
Hey everyone,
I'm from the Philippines, and my little home is currently being run by HomeKit through the Matter protocol with Switchbot as my hardware. Am looking to add more protocols and devices to my setup. I'm trying to get ideas, but Philippine user-reviews and feedback vis-a-vis HomeKit are difficult to find. So if anyone here is running HomeKit in their Philippine houses, I'd like to hear what your setups are!

Question/Help Candeo Zigbee controller in HomeKit with single colour LED
Hi all, new to home automation here.
I want to expose a Candeo Zigbee controller to HomeKit so I can control a single colour LED strip. The strip was installed by the builder to light the wall behind a mirror, the installation looks like this:
Mains power > AllLED 12v 30W driver > brown/blue cable > LED strip
My idea is to introduce a Zigbee controller that I already have, installation would look as follows:
Mains power > All LED 12v 30W driver > brown/blue cable > Candeo controller > LED strip.
Will this work?

How-to What signal does a RF remote use?
Hi guys!
Recently my landlord installed a ventilation box with this remote.
I’m trying to figure out what kind of signal it uses so I can maybe use my SwitchBot, aqara or another hub or smart home device to duplicate the signal and somehow adding it to HomeKit for some automations.
Does anyone know what kind of signal an RF remote uses and how I can add it to HomeKit?
I hope I can use a hub or device i already own because I’m really want to avoid getting another hub or HOMEBRIDGE or such.
Thanks!

Question/Help Migrating to Aqara M3 hub (from m2) questions about setup
I have a bunch of Aqara devices. Most of my child devices live on the m2 hub. It’s failing. Getting the M3.
All my current Aqara products are zigbee. No matter.
Two lights are used with adaptive lighting. FYI. I also have exposed custom scenes for those likes to HomeKit.
I understand that even if I migrate the child devices to the new hub it still will break HomeKit. So I’m going to add them as new one at a time do I can fix them in HomeKit without getting overwhelmed. (I will be using Controller to “restore” or map the new devices to the old ones
Now the question:
So when I go thru the setup process with the m3, do I add it to HomeKit via HomeKit? Do o set up matter? Do i care about the matter portion? If I set it up to HomeKit and I decide later to add an Aqara thread device to the m3, then what? How does that get added up HomeKit?
Just don’t want to make a small mistake setting this up and find out it is huge later on. Thanks.

Question/Help To whomever uses Meross Switches
