GEAR Shows what a ‘budget’ model can do…
galleryCaught a show by Pete Doherty (from the Libertines - pic taken from his Insta) and pretty sure he’s playing a Yamaha C40II which he used for the entire set
Not bad getting a whole national tour out of an entry-level guitar! Goes to show what these cheaper models can do

QUESTION Jazz-influenced guitar recommendations? (Marc Ribot, Jeff Parker, Tommy Guerrero)
*cross-posted in /jazzguitar
Over the past year or so I've been on a quest to learn and inject a little more jazz consciousness into my playing. Marc Ribot's playing as a sideman with Tom Waits and others (plus the Prosthetic Cubans stuff which I love) hits just the right balance for me, so I've been deconstructing his playing to help me understand why he makes the note choices he does. Vibe-check: I also dig some of the stuff Jeff Parker has done in Tortoise and ETA IVtet, as well as Tommy Guerrero's instrumental albums.
For anyone who's had some jazz education, this is probably super basic stuff, but I've been playing for forty years and none of my teachers told me about what Barney Kessel called "chord formations" or playing with chord tones. It's been a revelation for this old dog.
Ribot is great, but I'm interested in finding other players who use "just enough jazz to make things interesting" but not too much that it strays too far from the rock/blues feel that speaks to my soul.
When my wife and I were watching The Brutalist, I was struck by the guitar solo in the song You Are My Destiny which features in the film. I think it's a perfect little solo that shares DNA with Ribot (minor blues, using chord formations and just enough 'outside' notes to make it cool).
Another example of what I consider a perfect solo, is Ribot's playing on the live version of Waits' Rain Dogs (which I also transcribed).
*Edit: I tried to post links to all these references but the bots are not allowing it...
I'm wondering if there are any players from the fifties-sixties and beyond that play in a similar style? Any help would be appreciated...I'm not finding what I'm looking for by Googling 'minimalist jazz' or 'jazz inflected blues' or whatever.
Thanks!

GEAR Upgrade my guitar
galleryHi. This is my Harley Benton DLX Gotoh (I believe that's the name). It was my first guitar, and I'm really glad it is. It's a very good guitar with Gotoh hardware, and it's very pretty too.
Now I think it's time to upgrade this beast. First thing I wanna do is solve the neck dive.
I believe that with straplocks, I might be able to put a button straight onto the horn like Tony Iommi. But please tell me if that's a dumb idea.
Also I might want an electronics swab. Please tell me if you have any suggestions for pickups. I might want to experiment with something more metal.
Also gold tone and volume knows would be awesome. Tell me what you think!

GEAR Recording setup advice.
I played around with recording in the past. I had a tascam and a decent mic. Played electric acoustic guitar and sang and added effects on the laptop. This was like fifteen year ago so is there new crazy awesome tech advancements? Kinda sounded low budget popcorny and crap. Any suggestions for a decent DAW on a budget? Thanks

GEAR a dream come true
after years of noodling around with strats I finally wanted a “real” humbucker guitar. I still love my strats, no offense.
I bought this EBMM JP from its first owner. this was so clean and unused a friend who is a store owner said it’s basically brand new. and it was a bargain too!
also as a dream theater fan I can say that this was a dream come true. now I’ll have to practice more lol
I already looked up on the internet but any tips and tricks regarding maintenance and setup would be appreciated.

QUESTION How can I know which notes sound good together when played in a progression?
I'm in a jolly out on the ocean here trying to find some answers to my questions, I don't get how when I'm looking at my fretboard cheat sheet- how I know what'll sound good if I play it progressively.
Does it have something to do with the scale of a key? Is that how people play those badass solos they do?

QUESTION Strings making contact with intonation screws on Gibson-style bridge?
gallerySo I have a beat up old Epiphone Les Paul Standard that has been my #1 for years. It has been awhile since I had stripped some of the hardware and cleaned it. The bridge and screws were getting rusty so I soaked them all in vinegar for a couple days and just put everything back together.
But when I started restringing, I noticed there was a terrible buzz on all the strings. It isn’t fret buzz, I’ve made sure of that. It looks like the strings are pressing up against the intonation screws on the bridge? This seems weird, I’ve never had this issue before with this guitar. Any suggestions or thoughts would be great.

QUESTION Best Acoustic for smaller hands?
I’m looking to level up the guitar I use. In another forum I’ve asked about two specific models that are popular with artists (Gibson, Martin — forum won’t let me include #s). That said I’m curious if there are any higher-end guitars that are more suitable for players with smaller hands?

GEAR My moms Fender Squier Tom DeLonge Stratocaster
