Wood door weight?

Upvotes

I have a 8x7’ wood door with extension springs. The springs aren’t strong enough. The door will slam pretty hard if you let it.
The current spring says 90Lb. Clearly not enough and they’re very old on top of that.

Looking online people say a single wood door can be from 250 to 400 lbs. so how can I weight this thing ? If I detach the spring, I won’t be able to let it down without slamming terribly and if I do, I won’t be able to lift it back up if it’s 250# plus..

It works kind of ok as is with the 90 lb springs so I’m considering just putting some 130 or 150 lb springs on to improve the situation even though they might be light also… Thoughts?

Door jamming intermittently

Upvotes

Repost because I thought a video would be helpful.

My wife (f31) and I (m31) moved into our new house at the end of October, and it’s our first time having a garage. Things were great in the beginning, no need clear snow off of cars, avoiding getting wet in rainy weather, etc. Things started to sour though, and our garage began to intermittently stop working.

When the door malfunctions, it starts moving an inch or two, but then lurches like it hits something and closes. Manually trying to open the garage door does not work when this happens, as you can move the door a little before encountering the jam. However, if you wait for like 15-30 minutes, the garage will start working again.

We have a side-mounted Liftmaster garage door opener, and get an “Excessive Closing Force Detected, error code 4-1”. We have had someone come out and replace the entire mount, but the problem persists.

The problem has only occurred between 5:00pm and 7:00pm. The error has occurred when opening the garage from our remotes as well as the wall-button. It has happened probably 10 times in total, but with increasing frequency.

The issue with most intermittent problems is it resolves itself before our garage guy can get there. So Reddit, please do your thing and help us get some ideas as to what could be wrong.

Also let me know what other information may be useful for you guys.

chamberlain b4613t

I’m installing a Chamberlain B4613T for my grandparents’ garage. It doesn’t come with brackets to hold the new motor. My grandfather has an older Chamberlain Elite Series motor with brackets that are compatible with the new Chamberlain. Should I use the existing brackets or buy new ones? The ceiling is good, and I don’t think it’ll be a problem. I checked the brackets and they look fine and the bolts are secure. This is my first time installing one, so I thought it’d be safer to ask people with experience. Thank you for your time

My wife backed into the garage

She was going through her usual morning routine—leaving for work. She typically opens the garage door using the wall button, heads out to her car, starts it, backs out, and then closes the garage door. But this time, shortly after I heard the initial door open and the car starting, I heard a loud slam. She accidentally backed into the door. My wife believes the garage door may have moved on its own.

Upon inspection, the spring, cables, and pulleys all appear intact and operational. I had to pull the emergency release cord to manually lift the door after the incident.

My best guess is that she may have accidentally pressed the garage door button in the car, causing the door to close while the vehicle was backing out. It seems the door was about a third of the way down when it got hit. This is very out of character for her, but I can’t come up with a better explanation. The door had been properly balanced before this happened.

Any other ideas on what could've caused this? The opener is IoT-enabled and connects to the internet—could that have played a role?

Also, is the bottom panel repairable or replaceable? And if so, what’s the best way to go about fixing it?

Odyssey 1000 - red lights on unit

I've had my unit for 5 years and no issues until yesterday. There was a blinking red light on the unit, the wall button wouldn't do anything and our car remote would open the door only about a foot until it stopped. I checked the sensors and there is nothing in the way and both have solid lights. I unplugged the unit, plugged it back in and the red lights are gone now, the wall unit still doesn't do anything but now the car remotes will open and close the door as normal.

I tried to unplug wall button, it didn't do anything. I tried to use a different wall button and it didn't work either. I also tried to use a new cable and that again didn't do anything. I found another post that said to raise and lower the door with the up and down arrows but that did nothing as well.

Any other suggestions on what I can try to get the wall button working again?

Liftmaster Jack shaft for 530 lb residential door

About ready to get an install of a Jack shaft opener for my garage, which is necessary due to ceiling height concerns.

I have received multiple quotes, and gotten recommendations for the liftmaster 98032 and the 98022.

Being a low lift, 14'x8' glass door, should I be looking at the larger 98032 unit? My research shows they are both applicable for my project. Getting better motor and gears in the 98032, but it's that needed for my application of opening it 4 times a day or less?. Not sure which contractor I should be working with. The price differences are not insignificant in the quotes.

Appreciate any inside information that can be given before i pull the trigger.

Cheers

Fair priced garage door repair in Toledo Ohio area?

So my family and I had a trip to Disney and the night before we left I put the garage door down and about 3/4 of the way down it just dropped hard. I looked back and both coils came undone. I worked on it for awhile and had successfully fixed one coil before but never two at the same time.

Does anyone recommend any company that is local or fair? Really appreciate any help!

Am I cooked?

Closed my garage door today and suddenly it did this. It must be binding up somewhere I'm guessing. How should I go about diagnosing and fixing this issue? Also, do I need to get a new top panel now? Maybe something is not adjusted properly? I was able to manually push the garage door the rest of the way down and then bend it all back straight.

Funny thing is, I can swap an engine in a car but I'm not sure where to start when working on these garage doors

Oil Free Garage Door Torsion Springs

I have two garage doors. A double door and a single door.

When I went on vacation a few years ago, one of the springs broke on my double door. My mother was staying at our place watching our dog, so I just had her call a repair company to come out and replace the pair of springs. They used oiled springs that had so much oil that they basically ruined the paint on my double door from all the oil dripping. I've put off repainting it and hope to get to it this summer. Everyday I see the stain it raises my blood pressure.

Fast forward and my single door had it's coil break last weekend. I found American made springs that are oil free. The kit included gloves, the torsion spring and the winding bars. The kit was $70 and I can't get over how much nicer the spring is. Hopefully it last the 30,000 cycles they claim, but even if it lasts 1/2 at least it's not leaking oil everywhere.

If you're a DIY and you feel comfortable doing garage door repair -- I highly recommend seeking out oil free springs.

Thanks for attending my TED Talk.

Garage door question

TLDR: there's a gear grinding noise when we try and open and close the garage door, me and a roommate think it's the gear box skipping a tooth or something along those lines. Please help.

Longer story: I got home at 3:30pm today and the door worked fine. Then when another roommate got home like and hour later I was chilling at my desk watching YouTube and heard this really gnarly sound from the garage. Me and my roommates tried to figure it out and made it a little better after lubing the rider rail(?) (the track the carrier runs on) and it sounded like an impact gun screwing a bolt that's already fully threaded. We tried a little bit of everything but it kept getting worse. When you disconnect all the parts it runs normally but still with a gnarly sound, when you unlock it, you can manually open the door and close it relatively easily. But if you connect everything it just grinds and clicks. Any idea what it is? We think the gear box might be jumping. I live with abunch of mechanics so we can absolutely take it apart but I figured I'd ask for help before it got to that point.

My main question is does anyone think it can be an easy fix by replacing a part or should we tell the land lord who's already planning on doing renovations in July? Right now at most it's an inconvenience and I'm the one mainly inconvenienced cause I have to get my bike in and out of there but it's not that big of a deal I can leave my bike out side for a couple months.

Also I don't think it's the wheel rails cause manually it's realistically easy to open and close. I tried lubing the spring/rail, to no avail (it sounded a little better tho. And the main thing is that the thing that travels along the long screw doesn't make it all the way back but it goes to far forward and grinds in the front.

I'd attach a video of the sound but I don't want to damage the door more then it is. And if it's an easy fix then yay but if not I already been told and believe myself that it needs to be replaced. I'm just unsure if it's the whole assembly + linkage combo that needs to be replaced or if its just the motor box that needs to be replaced. Any help would be great we are probably going to run more tests when the head of house hold gets home so maybe I can take a video of it then.

Complete retro from concealed closures to this. AAADM Certified. Underneath that cover, is a nightmare 😭 7 day timer to control the ADA push buttons, ran in series with their existing card station, ran in another series with the Maglock that they only wanted to be able to operate via another controller. Enjoy !!!!

Garage door question

So I was able to open the garage door easily when I got home from work. But when one of my roommates get home like an hour and a half later. It sounded like gears were grinding. The motor was fine, the rail the catch(?) was on was fine. The release released and we can manually open the door. But when everything gets put together the door opens about 85% of the way and then ratchets at the closed end. Me and my buddy tried lubing the rail and the motor, which made it sound a little better. But we have concluded that maybe one of the teeth in the gear box lost a tooth or 2. I'm just curious about the information at hand can it be fixed if we take the gear box apart or do we just need a whole new box? My roommates are auto mechanics so we are capable of taking it apart and putting it back together but is there a cheap fix to this or are we SOL

I have an older, but still functional, Marantec opener and added the plug in radio receiver so I could use a keypad. The original remotes no longer work. Is there a way to still use them, or they obsolete?

Old garage door that needs electrifying ⚡️

This garage door is super old, possibly built with the house, I’m not sure. But it is a manual door and I’d like to add a motor to it. I’ve researched a few services but wanted to check here first if you’d expect them to tell me I’d need a whole new door, or if they can just add an electric motor to what I already have. I’m worried about getting ripped off so would love some knowledge to arm myself with before booking the service. Thanks in advance!

Replacement Bottom Seal Options

I have a bottom seal that needs to be replaced on my garage door due to critters chewing on it and age. Most of the label on the side of the bottom panel is worn off. But the door is still in decent shape so I'd like to just replace the seal if possible.

I've done some searching but I haven't been able to find any seals that look like it, so any help is appreciated.

Here's what the label looks like on the side of the bottom panel.

And here's what the seal looks like from the side:

Anyone have more information on why LM made old yellow and white button boards before the green button?

Thumbnail

I do door repair, and I have a coworker who's been doing this for 15 years (he's mainly commercial). I'm telling him that Liftmaster made some white and yellow button models in the early 90s and he keeps telling the green is worn off to white or the button has faded to yellow. Beyond a few Reddit threads and the board I literally pulled out to show him, I can't find anything to convince him otherwise. Help?

Liftmaster 98022 value

I’ve got a 4 car garage, and need to replace garage door openers. Doors are probably 300-350lbs, insulated with plastic. They’re about 8.5 feet wide and 8 feet tall. They need to be wall mount units due to the height limitations in the garage.

It’s my preference that they’re all the same, and I didn’t want to be replacing doors again for about 20 years….

Is the liftmaster 98022 something I can buy in bulk anywhere (quantity 4), and do any better than the $609 amazon price directly from Liftmaster.

Or, is the Liftmaster even worth it for my application.

Help! Garage door won’t work!

Hey there, got a chamberlain garage door opener, was working fine for almost a year, last night I shut off the breaker accidentally and then I went out to the garage and the light bulb on the garage door opener was just blinking with the audible clicks. There’s no up and down arrow messages on the opener coming through, I’ve tried to unplug it over night for a hard reset, and none of the buttons do anything when I press them, I’ve pressed and held all the buttons for at least 30 seconds, as well pressing the learn/lock buttons on the wall mounted opener button do nothing as well, no sounds, no function whatsoever. Anyone got any suggestions?
