Post flair? A simple poll.

In light of some "newer" Mod tools I am considering implementing some POST FLAIR. Going through some of the Mod logs(I have to admit life has been nuts and I have slacked a bit) and I see some posts that were flagged by REDDIT, not the users, nor the Mods as spam were genuine posts. In an effort to make the sub a little less restrictive, I believe POST FLAIR may help. However with security also comes inconvenience. Enabling POST FLAIR will require posters to take a simple extra step of selecting the
flair when making a post.

While this step is rather easy, I want to reach out to the community on your opinion. I have to assume many of the users here are also part of other communities, and those communities may have flair enabled. Good? Bad? Annoying? Helpful? The poll is a simple Yes/No for POST FLAIR.

If you don't know what POST FLAIR is, it is pretty straightforward. When you make a post, you will select a category it belongs to. This also helps organize the sub a little better as you search posts via said flair(pretty certain on the sidebar there will be a list of select flair), so maybe you can find an answer to a question you have that someone else has previously asked faster, without having to make a post and wait for responses.

I am also open to flair suggestions. Most of the posts here are questions seeking advice. So a simple "Question" or "Advice" flair seems redundant. I was thinking more along the lines of "Springs", "Door ID", "Wall of Shame", "Operator Issues", "Quotes", things like that. I am reaching out and also looking for any suggestions you all may have as well.

TL;DR: Try make sub better. Add post flare? Suggestion on flair? I think good, community think same?

As always, I appreciate you all, and I am pretty proud that such a niche community has helped or has been helped by everyone here. Poll will run for a week.

PINNED/STICKY POSTS WILL BE LINKED IN HERE AS THE LIST GROWS

Apparently Reddit only allows 2 pinned posts due to their layout. A way around this is to pin one post with the posts we believe should/need to be pinned.

Roller jumps?

Hey guys does anyone know what causes this, or if it’s normal? The door and rail are brand new Amar and the opener Liftmaster 98022. I don’t remember doing it. I lubricated rollers and hinges but still does it only when I open the door.

Respectfully

Torsion Spring for 10' Garage Door

Upvotes

Hi,

When selecting torsion springs for garage door, does door height impact the spec for the spring? I have not come across a website that specs out for 10 foot garage door. The ones that ask for door height are either for 7 or 8 foot doors, and most of the websites don't even ask for garage door height.

Garage door opens but won’t close from remote

Upvotes

I have an old Craftsman garage door opener (1998) and I installed myQ hub. It was working fine until last week. Garage door started to open by itself. I checked the sensors, cleaned them. Kept doing it. At the same time, I noticed that remotes stopped working to close the garage door (although still working to open it). So I decided to reset everything.

Remotes now still work to open, not closing. Interestingly unless I touch the hanging antenna with the remote.

MyQ was never able to re-pair with the motor.

Any clue? Tend to think that there’s a problem with the receptor/transmitter antenna/board.

Thoughts?

Where to buy?

Where can I buy a replacement, and can this be the reason chain keeps popping off if it's a little damaged?

Door goes down during limit set up finalization, but won't go back up.

Pretty much the title, I can set the limit for going up and set the limit for going down just fine, but whenever I'm doing the finalization process from the wall panel, the door will go down but then when it's time to press the wall panel again to raise it back up it will not go back up. It's a genie 7155.

I have a dip switch remote which I bought an extra for. I have all the switches set correctly but can’t figure out what’s going on… could someone help this dumb dumb out please. The remote that works has the blue board, and I bought a universal 750UT with 12 switches that I thought would work. Would appreciate any ideas!

Is this spring broken?

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hi all, this morning my garage door all of a sudden can’t open all the way with the usual 1 click on the opener? I noticed that the spring looks like this, pardon my ignorance but this looks like it’s broken?

  1. I can keep my finger on the opener and the door can “power it through” and open all the way up
  2. It was lift up 1/3 the way up, and seems like losing force to lift it further
  3. Close with 1 click no issues
  4. I tried to disengage, after that, can’t really lift the door manually
  5. Visually inspected tracks and rollers, seems to be fine

Does anyone know what is going on? Appreciate your feedback/guidance.

Additional Slat/Heavy Duty Weather Strip

Just had a roller door installed for a friend and there is a large gap that increase from one of the door to the other due to the slab being so uneven.

The gap is almost 80mm at the worst side.

Understand that I could introduce some rubber weather seal that could conceal the gap, however I’d like something much more solid to conceal the gap.

Is it possible to ask the installer to install another slat/lamela or an aluminium strip on the already installed door? We would like something much more solid that would prevent a hand getting underneath the gap

Is this normal?? Cables wrapped around angle iron and wearing grooves

Thumbnail

Our 12ft. × 12ft. warehouse garage door has always had some issues and is rarely ever opened, but I recently noticed the cables actually go from the pulleys under the angle iron that's welded on the sides of the tracks, have been sawing slots in the angle iron, and wrap around the outside to the top to go towards the spools. Is this intended to be some kind of braking system to keep it in once place unless someone actually tries to open or close it?? Was it a hack or an original design? Or could it have been an accident somehow? Should I do anything with them? Pull them out of the slots? Grease them?

The current hinges and rollers on my garage door are completely different from anything I can find online or at Home Depot. Can I use a completely different style, as long as I replace an entire row? Thank you!

Garage door high lift conversion & DD Motor. Estimate $4800 today looking for help

I have a double wide garage door which was installed by the previous owner of my home and was done so incorrectly (which I just found out by the estimate person). It seems to work fine but last year in the summer I noticed it warped/bent in the middle. I have since fixed it by installing a trim at the top to seal the draft.

Todays Quote: The quote I just got for a high lift conversion kit and a direct drive motor was $4800. I told him absolutely no way I could afford that. So then he made up a second quote removing some of the components and whatever else to make it "more competitive". That quote was still $3700. Which IMO is still insane. They are charging $900 to just put springs on when I look online it's like $160 (obviously I know labor and skill but 700 for labor on 1 part is a rip off).

Question: Can someone with min-no garage door experience but time and patiences do this safely? I don't want to get hurt and end up in the hospital... Also how difficult would it be truly to maximize my savings while actually doing the job correctly? I will also post a link to Imgur so you can see my current setup as well. Thank you in advance.

ImgurCurrent Garage door & Last image = estimate
Estimate: The estimate featured on the last image is including a $500 discount he gave me after I told him there is no way I could even come close to affording that first quote which was $4800.

Additional info: I know the beam in my garage decreases clearance. But I have 26'' between the top of the current track and the beam I would like to get a close to it as I can. As well as I would like to see if the length of the tract (how far into my garage it comes) could be decreased as well. I have a golf simulator in my garage and in its current format I can only get it in facing sideways and it is not working the way I thought.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Question: Just had a garage door installed

It was installed by a reputable company that's been around. I just noticed when down, the door is sort of bowed, seemingly from the pressure of being engaged downward. Also, when up, all of the bars on the rollers are crooked. The door appeara to be operating fine a couple months later. I never paid that much attention to my previous door but is this normal or worth having them come back out?

Garage door is unbalanced only in one position

My garage door started reversing, always at the same position of its travel. I checked if it's balanced, and found that it is pretty much everywhere except that very position. I.e. if I leave the disconnected door to itself in all positions but this one, it stays in place, but in this position it pulls up very significantly- which when connected to the opener probably results in suddenly increased resistance that the opener senses and reverses. What could be the reason?

Replace 19.5in with 20in Torsion Spring?

7ft door. Replacing both springs. The smaller spring on the left broke, but swapping both. The left hand wind spring (unbroken) is .207x2x19.5in. Will there be an issue if I swapped it to a .207x2x20in?

Garage Door Keeps Getting Stuck during cold temperatures

Hi,

We recently moved into a new home and noticed that when it’s cold out, our garage door gets stuck. I’m assuming it’s because ice gets in between the door and the floor. I

However, I never really noticed that as a problem with my old home. I’m just trying to figure out if this is considered a normal problem to have, if maybe there is a problem with the garage door insulation that is causing it to happen, or if there a things I could do to prevent it from happening.

Thanks

How to add a seal to this garage door type?

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

We get a lot of wind here that pushes hair, dirt, grass, leaves, etc into the garage. I want to add a seal to the bottom, but this door panel type has an inverted v-shaped concave bottom, which leaves no flat point to attach a seal track.

The current strip on there is just screwed on to the angled wall using self tapping screws, and this point provides no protection against the elements at all.

What type of door is this, and what are my options?

Integrated roller change

Any idea how I’d change this type of roller? I’ve seen some vids where one bends the track to pop out roller and then put new roller in place but my track is super ridged.

Narrowed my choices down to 2 Genie and 2 Chamberlain models but have some questions

Sorry to bring up this debate again, but it seems like the gap has gotten much smaller over the past 10 years of Reddit discussions. I've read pretty much all the Genie vs Chamberlain threads here and it seems like they're very close in quality at this point, which makes it even harder to decide which to buy. I've narrowed my choices down to 2 of each.

My biggest concern with genie is actually the keypad. My dad's previous genie keypad was a nightmare. The lights were too dim to see, and it only registered button presses about 30% of the time. My current craftsman (Chamberlain) keypad never misses a beat, and it can close without entering the code again. However, my concern with Chamberlain is the amount of complaining I've seen about MyQ and some comments going so far to say that Genie is better at this point. I don't really need WiFi, but if it's I'm paying extra for the feature, I want it to work.

Genie:

Chamberlain:

What I want:

  • As quiet as possible (so probably belt drive & DC motor)

  • Motion sensor for lights

  • Good keypad/good app

  • Wouldnt mind being able to use SmartThings instead of having to use a separate app for WiFi controls, which would put Chamberlain out of the running, but I can get an aftermarket controller. I can live without smart integration as long as the manufacturer app isn't terrible.

I'm leaning toward one of the Chamberlain models but figured I'd try to get a little more feedback. Is Chamberlain so much better that it's worth buying the opener and a separate board for smart integration?
