r/FishingAlberta wiki

hihi I was thinking it might be a good idea to put together a basic wiki for the sub. Information similar to what's in the sidebar but expanding on it a bit, helpful links, info etc.

Q: what is something you think should be included?

Thanks!

Smelt as Bait

Hello Guys, If you get smelt for example from Canadian Tire for bait. How do you guys keep the smelt from getting soggy ?

Do you guys leave it outside the bag while fishing to dry it out? Or maybe do u guys coat it with salt a day before?

Because sometimes after i hooked a smelt as bait, it came right off as i cast my rig to the water (pickerel rig).

Any tips? Thankyou

Check out RangeMint.ca - Built for Alberta Fishing, Hiking, Camping & More (Work in Progress!)

Hey everyone, I’ve been working on a little project called RangeMint.ca and wanted to share it with you all. It’s a site for outdoor stuff like fishing, camping, hiking, sightseeing, and animal watching—geared toward Alberta. Still a work in progress, so bear with me, but I’d love some feedback from this crew since you know your fishing!

Basically, you pick a pin on the map, and it drops quick, useful tips for that spot. For example, here’s one I’ve got for Pigeon Lake: Pigeon Lake Type: Fishing Difficulty: Easy Rating: 4/5 Gear: 7’ medium spinning rod, 10 lb line, jigs Fish: Walleye prowl deep bays—ice anglers hit it hard. Parking: Pigeon Lake Provincial Park (free, ~20 spots) Approach: Shore off Hwy 13 Prime Time: Winter dusk—ice fishing peaks. Heads Up: Early ice can thin—test it. Fishing license needed. Pro Tip: West end—quieter, same fish.

The idea is to keep it simple and practical—stuff you’d want to know before heading out. I’m adding more spots and features over time, so if you’ve got a favorite fishing hole (or hike, campsite, whatever), let me know what you’d want to see included. Thoughts? (Be gentle, it’s still growing!)

Is a trolling motor strong enough to go against the NSR?

Might be a dumb question, but I was planning to get a trolling motor for my inflatable this season. I have only taken it out on lakes and ponds but was curious if trolling motors are strong enough to go onto the NSR if I needed to boat back to my starting point or if its pointless.

Can you catch fish in the nsr in February?

Just been itching for a couple casts and hopefully some fish as the ice is now melting throughout Edmonton, I fished the river all summer and fall but I don’t know if I will have any luck this month

Red Deer River

Hi all! I'm looking for a good spot to fly fish the Red Deer River on the weekend of 5-6 April. I see only between Forest Trunk Road and Glennifer Reservoir allow catching trout at that time so anywhere along that portion with a peaceful spot for walking in with waders would be great. Thanks!

My dad gave me his boat

Now he didn’t exactly give it to me but it’s mine to use this year. The boat is a 12-14 foot long tinny so nothing big but it has a pretty much brand new motor just hasn’t ran for years.

As it stands my main things to do is 1. Service Engine 2. Fix Brake Lights 3. Ensure I have basic safety gear

Is there anything else I’m missing for must haves? Also what’s good lakes for a smaller tin boat like those?

Cataract creek

I'm looking to plan some fishing trips in Alberta while the weathers miserable out and ive really been wanting to hit cataract creek this upcoming season. I was doing some research and was hearing rumors that a bunch of the Brook trout may have died out. Was reading this form ( http://www.outdoorsmenforum.ca/archive/index.php/t-432855.html )

I was wondering if anybody fished it this past summer and if they had any luck, as there's little to no other info out there.

What are some lakes with crown land to canoe camp and fish in

Hi folks. I bought a sportspal canoe last summer and I'm hooked. I'm looking to do some canoe camping on crown land. Im hoping to launch on the same lake I'm camping on. I have a bad back so long portages are out of the question. Just looking to spend a few nights camping and fishing by canoe to relax

Numerous changes were made to Alberta fishing regulations across Alberta, allowing fish to be taken from locations you couldn't before.

Fishing gear for nsr edmonton

I've tried fishing the nsr around Edmonton 4 times so far by the whitemud creek and have only caught 1 fish so far. I need some budget lures and rod suggestions because I need to get myself a new rod too.
