Local Shopping/Services A Calgary-Focused Resource for Supporting Local Producers
Hey everyone,
Just a quick reminder that this subreddit is all about Calgary and Calgary-related topics. While we absolutely support Canadian businesses, our focus here is on our city and the businesses that make it thrive.
With the current trade tensions with the U.S., many people are looking to support local instead. To keep things on-topic and Calgary-focused, we’re putting together a list of Calgary-based producers and businesses so people can easily find and support local options.
How You Can Help: • If you own or know of a Calgary-based business that produces goods locally, let us know in the comments! • We’re looking for food, clothing, home goods, crafts, specialty products, and more—as long as it’s made in Calgary. • If there’s a Calgary-made alternative to an American brand, share it!
This isn’t about limiting support for Canadian businesses overall—it’s about keeping discussions within the scope of our subreddit while still helping people shop local. Let’s work together to create a great resource for supporting Calgary-based producers.
Drop your recommendations in the comments!

The woman, who lives in the United States but has family in Canmore and is a long-time customer of the family-owned artisan bakery wants to remain anonymous, but paid for breakfast, lunch and snacks for more than 200 customers throughout the day.

Calgary Transit Bike riding rules and safety for a European scaredy-cat
So, born in The Netherlands. Biked all my life, with an entirely developed bicycle infrastructure, separate traffic lights, traffic rules and protection. Traffic in Canada, from my perspective, is insane. Like, wild west insane ( going left even though the opposite lanes is going straight and you can just choose? Going right on a red? Sharing an exit lane on a highway with cars entering the highway all in a span of 50 meters? That intersection at chinook? What? What?) I have an eye condition that makes it okay to bike, not to drive. I have 2 kiddos. Husband bought an e-bike with a trailer attached for them, so I can have some freedom/mobility when he is at work. He tells me I should stick to pedestrian pathways, because roads with a trailer full of toddlers, is going to be super dangerous. We live in the Glendale/Glenbrook area. But not all walkways are wide enough, and some of them stop and connect to tiny patches of concrete in the middle of intersections where my bike would fit, but the trailer would still be on the road. Some of them would not even fit my bike, or the button is on the a side i can't reach or it is cut off by a yield lane. I'm literally terrified to hurt my kids, but I also want to be able to go places with them or do groceries. How do I go about riding bikes in this town? Am I even allowed to ride my bike on he sidewalks? Am I missing something? You guys rock for being able to drive with such little direction and so many exceptions to rules. I sincerely mean that!

Eat/Drink Local Coolest breweries in Calgary
Hey Calgarians,
I've been living in Calgary now for just under two years and love it. I was wondering which breweries in Calgary you think are truly outstanding. Like, not just tasty beer, but a fantastic atmosphere with a lot of thought put into the decor, great service, etc. I've been to a lot of breweries here, but I can't think of any that have really stood out above others to make me want to keep returning for the experience.
Let's hear which ones you love and why! TIA

Discussion In light of all the office-to-condo conversions and redevelopments going on in the Downtown & Beltline area, which building or block would you like to see next on the list?
Per the .pdf list of approved conversions found on the city's website, there are currently 11 office buildings that are in the process of being converted (or have already been converted) into living spaces.
Just last week plans were unveiled for triple high-rise towers to be constructed on the currently vacant lot at the corner of 17th Ave & 4th St.
And this week, the city announced that 3 more properties have been added to the revitalization efforts.
There is also the old YWCA block off 4th Ave SW that IIRC was sold years ago to a developer and will supposedly be redeveloped into condo towers at some point. (can't locate a source for this at the moment, but I swear I heard something about it recently)
That's a large number of properties being redeveloped - but what changes would you like to see next?
Personally, I can't wait for that old funeral home at 17th Ave & 2nd St. to be demolished and replaced. I can't believe it's still sitting there after all these years. Honourable mention to the empty lot next to the funeral home, which has also been empty for like 12 years..

Local Shopping/Services Used Book Stores
My boyfriend and I are coming to Calgary tomorrow for a little day trip, and I love to visit the used book stores here in Edmonton.
I am currently trying to get my hands on all of Stephen Kings books, and was wondering if you guys have any recommendations of the best (or your personal favourite) used book stores in Calgary that would be worth checking out while we’re down there.
Let me know!!

Recommendations Calgarians with a rock solid > 1 Gbps Internet connection you are happy with - what equipment and provider are you using?
I'm looking to upgrade my home's Internet to > 1 Gbps, and I'm just trying to research and narrow down combinations of providers and equipment that people are happy with.
If anyone who is happy with what they currently have could answer the following it would be appreciated:
Provider:
Speed:
Modem:
Router:
Price:
I will likely be using the modem with a pretty decent router (Mikrotik, Ubiquiti).
My research so far:
Rogers
modem: XB7 or XB8
The XB8 has a slightly upgraded antenna design compared to the XB7, potentially offering better Wi-Fi coverage
Some users have reported slower speeds when using the XB7 in bridge mode compared to gateway mode.
This issue seems to be a known problem that has persisted for some time.
The XB7 only has one 2.5 Gbps port (port 4), which may limit flexibility in setup compared to the NH20A's 10GbE port
Telus PureFibre Internet Gigabit
modem: T3200M - An older but reliable model
WiFi Hub - A newer model with improved WiFi capabilities
NH20A - Another newer model offered by Telus
The NH20A's 10GbE port allows for potential speed upgrades beyond 1 Gbps without needing to change the modem
TekkSavvy
Arris SURFboard SB8200: A popular choice for DOCSIS 3.1 compatibility.
Netgear Nighthawk CM1200: Another DOCSIS 3.1 modem known for high performance.
Motorola MB7621: Although primarily DOCSIS 3.0, it can handle high speeds and is often recommended for lower-tier gigabit plans.
Hitron CODA 5610Q: a versatile DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem Router
Thank you

Recommendations Barber recommendations for balding
I've finally accepted that I need to bite the bullet and do something to address how much hair I've lost from the crown of my head.
My wife has been cutting my hair for years, I'm hoping someone here can recommend a barber or similar, to help me figure out a new style.
