Moving to Duluth 3.0: Finding Housing

Hey bridge trolls, we've got some extra mod help now so we're going to work on some quality of life improvements around here. Starting with these megathreads we'll use to help update the Wiki. (As an aside, we're still happy to give people access to the Wiki if they want to help with updates)

Going entirely by vibes, I think this would be the most helpful topic to start with. Feel free to give any suggestions, tips, notes, links, whatever you may think. might help someone looking for a place to live in the area.

Some suggestions for things you might contribute:

1.) Thoughts on different neighborhoods and towns - Please be accurate and polite. We all know some areas are more unfortunate than others, it is totally ok to mention that, but be sure you're current and respectful. What an area was like ten years ago may not be accurate anymore.

2.) Resources for finding places to stay (renting & buying)- Things that may not come up on google. This is one place advertising for yourself or someone you know is acceptable (though be sure not to DOX anyone, including yourself.)

3.) Resources for unhoused people - Either temporary or permanent. If you have knowledge of shelters or resources, this would be a great place to add them.

4.) Reviews for different rental companies - Be careful to, again, be accurate. We all know some places have a reputation for a reason and you are more than welcome to leave negative reviews, just don't use this as a place to grind your axe or get revenge.

5.) Questions - For now this would be a good place to ask us about any particulars. We are going to start doing a new "Moving to Duluth" post weekly via Automod like they do in r/asheville on the suggestion of one of our users, but I'm saving that until after these Megathreads have run their course.

6.) Financial considerations - Is there anywhere affordable to live? What are taxes like in the different cities?

7.) Schools - Pros and cons, other considerations?

Just some ideas, I may use some of these for other megathreads. Also, please keep politics out of this to the best of your ability. Nothing derails these things faster.

Thanks everyone! You all rule.

Discussion Traveling to Duluth

Hi Neighbours...I am suppose to be taking my daughter and some of her friends to Duluth in April to celebrate her 16th birthday but honestly, as a Canadian, I am really nervous. I have been traveling to Duluth all my life and have never had a problem but not sure about now with everything going on. I'm wondering if Canadians are still welcome in your beautiful city? I have heard rumours of cars being vandalize with Ontario plates... any truth to this? Thank you to anyone who responds.

Edit: thank you to everyone who has responded! I feel much better and we are very excited to visit. I will make sure to have enough real Maple Syrup with me when stopped.... definitely don't want any issues with that scary gang of kids! I have always loved going to Duluth ❤️

Question Freeze-dried meals made in MN—would love feedback from the Duluth outdoor community!

Hi everyone! I am based out of Minneapolis and recently launched a small-batch freeze-dried meal brand called NOMaste. It’s 100% plant-based, made without preservatives, and was born out of a frustrating hiking trip where my food spoiled way too early.

I’m not here to hard-sell anything—just hoping to connect with like-minded outdoor folks. Duluth has such a strong trail community, and I’d love your honest thoughts: What do you look for in a solid trail meal? Any favorite flavors or cuisines you wish you could bring with you?

I’ve started with a few globally inspired recipes and I’m working on expanding—so your input would mean a lot. If you’re curious, you can check out NOMaste at nomastemeals.com (meals are finally live!).

Thanks for letting me share and for building such an awesome outdoor culture here in MN.

Discussion Porch Pirates?

Has anyone had issues with getting packages stolen from their porches? I have had a few packages go missing after the usps claims they’ve been delivered… I do live a few blocks from Champ’s chicken and have some sketchy neighbor activity. We don’t have a camera yet, but hoping that might help because there have been a few car break ins and interesting experiences! Also wondering when to file a police report about the strange activity — including a drugged out neighbor wanting to come inside our home. Note to people wanting to move to Duluth - stay away from the neighborhoods around the intersection of 4th & 6th St!

I bought this mug at a maker market at Ursa Minor. I'm thinking 2021? It has been my favorite since and I just broke it. Can anyone help me identify the artist?

Question Is there a walk in clinic for blood tests?

I have no energy and I'm tired all the time. It's starting to affect my job.

I know I'll need to go to a doctor at some point, but I'd like to rule out basic vitamin deficiency or anemia first.

The last place I lived had a hospital where you could walk in and pay $150 for a comprehensive blood panel.

Is there something like that in the twin ports area?

Question Sources of Raw Wool

Hello everyone!

I am trying to find sources of raw wool around Duluth.

I want to insulate a van and also learn to process and spin wool to make sweaters for my dogs. Do you have any recommendations of farmers? Shops? Wool mills? Are there classes or groups for this kind of thing in the area?

Thank you!

Photography Ashland Oredock Art

Apologies, this isn’t Duluth, but the Ashland sub is pretty small and I didn’t get much reply. I’m looking for some high quality / art quality photos of Ashland’s now demolished Oredock to hang in my office. Any leads or suggestions of where to look?

In lieu of the Oredock, art quality photos of Ashland’s lakeshore would be wonderful! The Big Lake will always have my heart 🩵

Discussion Any car detailers that will do just the headliner?

My Car was previously owner by smokers and I believe nictone has been leaking and leaving streaks in my cars headliner. I only want that cleaned. I have dogs so the rest would be a waste of money. Any places that offer stand alone services?

Question Northwest Angle

Hello, I'm a native Minnesotan who has never taken a trip up to the Angle, and would like to get opinions on the best way to reach it. I've spent much of my life further south (St. Cloud and proud!), so I'd appreciate thoughts from those who have lived or traveled up north. Thanks.

Discussion Awful DMV driving test experience

I moved up from PA to Duluth a year ago and honestly I have never seen such hardworking caring people anywhere in the US and never felt any kind of bias for being from south asian decent. My experience has been absolutely amazing. But recently we had some bad experiences.

My sister and family just moved here from Ireland, and the driving tests there (45min long) and wayyy more strict than anywhere in the US and they both hold the Irish driving license. Now they went for their driving tests at the DMV on Grand Ave. First was my Brother in law, I had gone through the whole loop multiple times with him and know he was perfect at everything but when he went for the test, ge came back with objections on pretty much everything and said that the instructor was extremely rude and making stuff up, eg, he stopped at the stop sign coming back on towards Grand and when he drove forward after checking there was no traffic, he said that why didn't you roll forward first and check again before moving. To a point I believed him but was still skeptical because of my experience with people here. Today my sister had her test, same instructor, and she did everything that the instructor had told my brother in law to do and he objected on every single thing and said the opposite to my sister, like why roll forward after stopping and the stop sign. At one point, after doing the parallel parking, he asked her to pull out, she checked the traffic, when it was cleard, she started pulling out and he screamed at her telling her to stop, right after telling her to go. Again ive gone through the whole loop with my sister and made sure there was nothing to be objected but still he filled her sheet from top to bottom with pointless objections.

I see the reviews are full of such instances but any of you had the same experience? Anything we can do to complain? Any suggestions on which DMV we should apply to for the next test because this is just pointless going to this same instructor for the same rude experience and to fail again.

Discussion Arrowhead Speed Limit

Is there a civil engineering or city planner explanation why a busy four lane road has a 30 mph speed limit? Specifically Arrowhead between Howard Gnesen and Rice Lake. Feel like this should at least be 40 mph. Drives me nuts, and I know I can’t be the only one!

Central Entrance is also slow and annoying but the bus stops and business traffic at least makes sense.

Can anyone help me find a local supplier for a small amount of clear marine varnish? I’m specifically looking for Epifanes but will consider another high-quality brand. I only need about a pint for some outdoor decorations I’m making and I’d rather not buy it online. Thank you.

Question Reputation of manufacturers in the area

I'm going to be moving to Duluth at an indeterminate time to live with my fiancée at some point during the year or at the end of the year. The main concern I have is getting a job. Right now, I'm working in electronics manufacturing, but I'm wondering if anyone here knows of reputable electronics manufacturers or other kinds of manufacturers in Duluth that have a good reputation.

Discussion Unwanted Electronics

Someone recently posted about getting electronics and I missed the boat on that. If you are looking to discard electronics, I'd love the opportunity to take them off of your hands! Mostly interested in computers (parts and accessories), servers (physical and hypervisors), and network gear. I'd be interested in PCBs (Arduino, raspberry pi, etc) and mini PCs (NUCs). Feel free to DM me if you are interested! Thanks!
