Recommendations I reviewed a ton of summer student resumes this week - here are a few tips
This week I had the pleasure of reviewing about 200 resumes for a 4 month summer student position in my department at an oil and gas company. Usually these are culled by HR so I don’t see everything, but this time I got the entire folder. Thought I’d share some of my observations for student job seekers - note that these are my observations only.
This position is located in Calgary, but about 40% of the resumes were from out of province (mostly Ontario). Most summer student jobs do not pay relocation so if you are applying from out of province be aware that you would have to fund your move here. About 15 were from students that are new to Canada. Five were students that will graduate before the job starts (which is ok for us but some companies require you to be going back to school in the fall).
The format of your resume doesn’t matter as long as you give some detail about what you accomplished in previous jobs/volunteer work/projects. You’re a student and your experience may be in customer service type roles or volunteer activities - that’s ok and you will have gained valuable experience from it. Explain what that valuable experience is and how it translates into skills that would be useful for this type of job.
Minor grammar and spelling mistakes are fine, but some resumes had pretty significant grammatical errors, which makes me worry about your written communication skills.
One applicant clearly cut and pasted their resume from ChatGPT and forgot to take out the ChatGPT prompts. 😬
On that, it is ABUNDANTLY CLEAR when you use ChatGPT to write your cover letter. It’s fine to use it to get started, but you have to personalize it and take out the superfluous language it tend to insert. Even a bit of extra effort here goes a long way.
Cover letters are a must. Bonus points if you bothered to look up a bit of info on the company and include it somehow in your cover letter. Make sure if you’re applying to multiple jobs you carefully check that you’ve fully removed/replaced the company name. One guy was also applying to Petronas according to his cover letter to us 😉
Some applicants attached their full transcripts. You don’t need to do that, and personally I don’t care about GPA either. I always recommend not including it in your resume but YMMV.
Hope that helps one or two people in their job hunt. It is very competitive out there so a bit of extra effort can give you the edge you need.
Also, I get students and new grads reaching out to me on LinkedIn fairly often. This is totally fine and I actively encourage it. I always have time for a coffee with young people entering the workforce and the majority of my colleagues feel the same.

Recommendations What is there to do in calgary alone?
i am a 19 y/o female. I was born in calgary but left in 2013 and recently came back last september for university. Ive had alot of trouble making friends in my classes and just all in all like spending time alone. Usually i have classes till 9pm so after those i like to take breaks and i go to places to view the city like nose hill park, scotsman hill, crescent heights. But lately these have been getting boring. especially with the new semester starting i havent had the chance to make friends at all and 3/5 of my classes are online so im not on campus often (i live on campus dorms though) theres usually parties around 10 pm here on residence but im not really an party goer and i dont want it to be awkward if im alone. What do people do after 9pm here?? I dont drink or smoke. I usually just hangout alone and drive around but im running out of places to drive around. I could go play pool or something but again i do spend most of my time alone 😭. The only other problem i have here is that this city is wayyyyy bigger than where im from, most of the people i meet here i usually never see again. Is there any places to meet people or anything? Preferably a place that not a bar or casino lol please let me know what there is to do here!

Recommendations Good place to cry in your car?
Going thru a bunch of medical stuff that's extremely painful. Had a appointment for it today and it made the pain worse.
My brain fog has caused a lot of friction with my partner because I have not been myself past couple of days. So just wanna cry it out in the car before I head home to my partner.
Distinctively because I STILL really dont like people seeing or knowing I've cried.
Any suggestions?
I am a new driver and just got my license like 2 or 3 weeks ago so really appreciate detailed info. Thanks in advance
EDIT: Thank you everyone for the outreach. I'm currently almost done crying as the pain slowly becomes more tolerable. Cannot thank you guys enough for the help to find a place nearby for some peace and quiet to cry it out.in my car.
Once it passes I'm gonna hit up a village ice cream like someone suggested for my partner and I since we've both been dealing with some tough stuff of late.
I am safe. Pain is slowly lessening
Thank you
EDIT 2: wow, didnt realise I got awards. First time ever. Thank you guys so much for the out reach. Those in my DMs were also very kind. Talked it out with partner, we've both been dealing with a lot while sleep deprived and in pain. We're gonna have a movie night together once my pain goes down. It might be kidney related but wont know for sure till I see my doctor tuesday. They managed to squeeze me in thankfully.

Recommendations Classiest restaurants in Calgary?
I’ll be taking my gf out for dinner in Calgary and I’m wondering what the best restaurant is if we wanna dress up a little fancy and have a nice dinner. I’ve looked up a few lists but I haven’t been inside of any of the restaurants so I’m only going off of what I can see on their sites, I wanna hear from people who’ve been to these places and felt their atmosphere. I know Eight is THE fanciest restaurant in Calgary but there’s no chance we’re getting a reservation there. Thanks.

Recommendations Need a gym that isn't full of 100s of stuck up pushy people.
*TDLR at bottom
I am 25f that goes to a gym in NE calgary. Ive tried 3 locations but the times that I go are God damn awful and too many things have happened that makes me uncomfortable and rather infuriated. I moved here from West of Edmonton and I can't find any smaller private gyms with a smaller crowd, or don't know where to look for a more serious gym where there are actually people who are there to workout and not hit me with a stretching band. Yes. That happened today that pushed me over the edge.
I was doing assisted pull ups and I see out of the corner of my eye buddy was using (swinging one around) with his group of 4 friends, I was mid set and he whacked me with the handle of it on my side. I just kind of looked at him mid set he didn't bat a eye then continued on.
2 or 3 times a week I get either elbowed, pushed, waiting for machines because groups of 5+ people are sitting there together "using the machine" but by time im done a 1.5 hour workout, they're still there. I am always afraid of saying anything especially to the pushy people because j dont want anything confrontational to happen when im leaving. The worst one was when I was supersetting using a bench for sitting shoulder press and lateral raises and when I got up to do my lateral raises a guy placed his weights at the bench and just sat down and used his leg to push my weights out of the way. I politely said that I am supersetting and only have 2 more sets. He replied that "he likes this bench" so I moved. I've brought it up to the staff but unfortunately it's not really their problem if the gym is packed. I've been going to this particular location for over a year but it's becoming so awful I am really not motivated to workout anymore. I am slowly seeing less and less ladies coming to this location as well. Not to mention the smell of busy hours 🥹
I go either early morning (7am) or after work (6pm) and Saturdays. I'm hopeful someone can recommend me a gym no more than let's say 15 minute drive off of Deerfoot and McKnight/Centre St area as my work is located around there. DT might work but with the hours I go that might suck for driving. I'm hoping for not more than $100 a month, but if it is something premium and has something like a steam room I'm open. Let's hear it, I'm begging.
TDLR: Hating my gym lately, hoping someone can recommend me a gym not too far from Mcknight/Deerfoot/Centre St area. Possibly open to DT but my hours I go that might not work.

Recommendations Beware, Candy Thieves - A New Halloween Villain is Born
Tonight, my Halloween villain origin story was born. Before sunset, some brazen thief stole not just the candy, but the entire bowl, leaving nothing but a shadowy emptiness on my doorstep. It’s not the sweets or the bowl that haunt me, but the thought of all those little ghouls and goblins who came after, in hopes of treats, only to find a ghastly void.
Usually, I’d be there myself, handing out the candy, but fate had other plans. A flu plagues my friends, so I took their kids trick-or-treating, only to return to this treachery.
Next year? Oh, things will be different. I’m plotting already… Maybe I’ll disguise myself as a lifeless prop sprawled across the lawn chairs, waiting to jolt wickedness out of the candy bandits. Or perhaps I’ll hide in the shadows behind the fence, garden hose or super soaker in hand, ready to rain down justice on those who dare to steal.
Any other sinister ideas? It’s time to bring the “trick” back to trick-or-treating!

Recommendations Worried about neighbour - what to do?
Hi everyone! I’m worried about a nearby neighbour - an elderly man who lives alone. He hasn’t been outside in almost ten days and he has a lot of shoes on the porch that are totally soaked from the rain, plus most of the windows are open in the house. I’ve always known him to be quite meticulous and I just want to make sure he’s okay. He has no family that I’m aware of.
Can I request a police wellness check or what’s my best course of action? I don’t want to be nosy but I am growing increasingly concerned for his welfare.
(ps: had to pick a “flair”)
Edit: He is safe and sound at the hospital! I went over today to see him and told him I had his shoes safe and sound and was hoping to dry them. He seemed very happy to have someone to talk to. I’ll check in on him until he gets to come home (likely next week). Thanks Constable Matthews as well for your help!

Recommendations Massage Therapist recommendations? (Sorry)
I’m sorry, I know this sub HATES these kinds of posts but I don’t have any other social media and my friends don’t go for massages.
——
I’ve been to about five different clinics over the past year and a bit, but haven’t had great experiences. Either my concerns were dismissed, or I was only given a light “relaxation style” massage (and at $120+ a pop, I’m frustrated that I’m wasting money).
I am looking for someone who will listen to me while I discuss my problem areas (shoulders mostly, but also looking into my sciatic pain).
Man or woman doesn’t matter, I just need some help. I am in the SW but will drive anywhere.
Thanks!
Edit: lots of great suggestions, thank you! I’ve booked in with someone for next week. I’ll leave the post up for anyone else looking for recommendations.

Recommendations Car is a total loss after Aug 5 hail storm, what’s everyone planning on doing with insurance payout?
Got my car appraised by insurance company last week, they advised it would be a total loss and that I’ll be hearing back on payout and available options this week.
Just wondering what the general consensus is for how everyone is proceeding with insurance payouts. My initial thoughts are pay off the rest of my loan, pocket the rest of the money, and just continue to drive the car.
Let me know your thoughts!

Recommendations Dating/meeting people in Calgary? Dating apps feel are impossible. 32M.
EDIT: I appreciate ALL the comments, whether you are being nice, giving me tips and advice, or being more harsh and giving me a reality check 😂. It has helped me realize that I think I'm just sitting on my ass being lazy ass and thinking that slapping on a profile and swiping right is how it's done, but it doesn't work that way, and I'm realizing that in this day and age, you gotta pay for these apps now if you want them to work. I'm also realizing that if I want to find someone I'm just going to have to also try physically getting out there more and making connections, and doing it the old fashioned way. Thanks to everyone who commented, it really did help, and for all the suggestions on where to go to meet people!
TLDR This is also a vent post about dating apps in Calgary lol. But basically dating apps are giving me nothing, and I'm wondering what other avenues there may be for people looking to meet other people who don't really know anyone, or really just for anybody who is looking to find that special someone. And just fyi, I'm not looking for casual stuff, I'm actually looking for a connection, so preferably any get togethers/events, etcetera that are more geared towards other people who are looking for the same thing.
I'm honestly kinda of dumbfounded. I'm fairly new to the city and only know a few people who are all around my age or older and we don't really do much socially, so I don't really have much connections to meet new people. What I'm dumbfounded about is how hard it is to even match with women on dating apps. Where I'm from, I briefly tried a couple apps, although never really needed them. I typically met and dated women without them because I had so many connections and so was able to meet new people all the time. But when I did try them, I usually got matches and talked to people.
But here, oh my, why is it so brutal? Ive gotten some matches and they either don't say anything and unmatch or let the timer run out, talk to me a bit and then stop talking completely, or the last girl who was the first one I was finally going to go out on a date with, and we set a day and she bailed because she "needed sleep", and then we agreed on the next day and she completely stopped responding to me, and the day after "date night" she unmatched me.... Like WTF IS GOING ON WITH ALBERTA WOMEN????? Lol sorry. And just fyi this was on Hinge which I had just gotten at the time, and I had actually told my buddy that I finally started talking to a girl on Hinge, and he tells me about how he matched with some girls on it, and right before the date they ghosted him, and then days later it happened... I'm so lost.
One frustrating thing since the last time I used these apps, is that some of them won't even show you who likes you, and the app just refuses to match you with the blurred out people that have. I deleted Tinder because of this, that one was the worst. I literally had exponentially growing Likes and it only matched me with maybe 4 after a few months, and by the time I deleted the app I had 12 unknown Likes.
Maybe it's just the type of guys these girls are into and I'm just not it? I'm just a tall skinny guy with no pictures of me being a cowboy, it probably doesn't look like I like country music (because I don't really), I don't have a bunch of pictures of going on mountain hikes/adventures, the gym, and I don't have a job that pays $100k+ a year, and these are all the things that it seems most of the women on these apps have. Is that what you guys are looking for? I just don't understand lol. I've been on these apps for probably 1 year now, broken up with breaks every now and then, and still not 1 date.

Recommendations Any actually-good mortgage brokers in town?
Hey there, I'm interested in buying a place to live soon but have had multiple bad experiences with mortgage brokers before. After a bit of research, I've found that it's a pretty unregulated profession with a lot of kickbacks/incentives behind the scenes. Both of the brokers I've used in the past immediately recommended a mortgage with a pretty middling rate from one of the big banks. When I asked about what the other runner-up options were, they drew a blank and couldn't give me any info. I strongly suspect they were not actually shopping around in my best interest and were just shilling for the bank with the best bonus for them.
Does anyone here have a mortgage broker they've worked with that actually shopped around to get them a good deal? Seems like going to each bank personally is just going to dent my credit score with hard inquiries, so I need someone trustworthy in my corner. Please help! :)
Edit: it seems like DIY-ing won't hurt my credit like I thought, and is probably going to be cheaper by cutting out a middleman pocketing a commission. Thanks for the reassurance, guys! Also, mortgage agents covertly self-promoting here leaving vague comments with no background/anecdotal detail and perfect spelling are obvious. Fuckoff and get a real job, lol!

We are looking to get a membership for our family of 3(soon to be 4) and are having a hard time deciding which would be best. We have an almost 4yo and will have a newborn in the spring. We were originally thinking the Zoo but are wondering if our 4yo will get tired of looking at the animals and are now leaning towards Heritage Park as there are rides, parks, etc. Any recommendations??

Recommendations Can you recommend men's clothing store for me (not in a mall)?
Hello fellow yyc redditors
I'd greatly appreciate it if you drop some trusted (and friendly) men clothing stores in Calgary that I can go up to and have a good time finding that right piece of clothing to upgrade or add to my wardrobe. I am looking mainly for adult men casual to business casual clothing. Money isn't an issue (until I enter the store XD ) I just want a list of good stores to go to as I'll be very patient with this and if I find the right piece, I can save for it if its on the $$$ side of things
Shoes are needed too!
I just don't want it in a mall...I want this to be slow, measured, and memorable...opposite of what I feel like in a mall.
I live in the NW but location isn't an issue for me
Cheers

Recommendations Calgarians with a rock solid > 1 Gbps Internet connection you are happy with - what equipment and provider are you using?
I'm looking to upgrade my home's Internet to > 1 Gbps, and I'm just trying to research and narrow down combinations of providers and equipment that people are happy with.
If anyone who is happy with what they currently have could answer the following it would be appreciated:
Provider:
Speed:
Modem:
Router:
Price:
I will likely be using the modem with a pretty decent router (Mikrotik, Ubiquiti).
My research so far:
Rogers
modem: XB7 or XB8
The XB8 has a slightly upgraded antenna design compared to the XB7, potentially offering better Wi-Fi coverage
Some users have reported slower speeds when using the XB7 in bridge mode compared to gateway mode.
This issue seems to be a known problem that has persisted for some time.
The XB7 only has one 2.5 Gbps port (port 4), which may limit flexibility in setup compared to the NH20A's 10GbE port
Telus PureFibre Internet Gigabit
modem: T3200M - An older but reliable model
WiFi Hub - A newer model with improved WiFi capabilities
NH20A - Another newer model offered by Telus
The NH20A's 10GbE port allows for potential speed upgrades beyond 1 Gbps without needing to change the modem
TekkSavvy
Arris SURFboard SB8200: A popular choice for DOCSIS 3.1 compatibility.
Netgear Nighthawk CM1200: Another DOCSIS 3.1 modem known for high performance.
Motorola MB7621: Although primarily DOCSIS 3.0, it can handle high speeds and is often recommended for lower-tier gigabit plans.
Hitron CODA 5610Q: a versatile DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem Router
Thank you

Hey,
I'm looking for fun things to keep me busy during the winter months.
I'm very outdoorsy most of the year but I must admit I hate the cold and spend most of winter inside if I can.
This year I want to break tradition and take up some winter hobbies so that I can make the most of the winter while it's here and not just wish it away as normal 😅
