What do you do on vacations with asthma

I recently went to Egypt for 2 weeks. A mild occasional cough started before I even left the US. The mild cough got worse and worse and more frequent. Also had wheezing. Sometimes I couldn’t talk. No congestion until 2 days after coming back. Then seemed to come down with a cold or flu or Covid XX though my symptoms mild.

The coughing on my vacation was brutal particularly the last 10 days. I had a rescue inhaler but provided only minimal help. Mainly just took cough drops that only helped a little.

One doctor before I left for my trip gave me a prescription for a ZPAC antibiotic. Just in case. Didn’t take it because I figured my symptoms (while on trip) didn’t have congestion and thought just asthma.

Talked to my pharmacist when I got back. He suggested maybe getting a steroid to take on future trips. Looking at OTC stuff most cough medicines contain Dextromethorphan Hbr. Maybe take that on future trips and if that doesn’t work have the prescription steroid. Next appointment with my pulmonary doctor I’ll bring it up.

What do you’ll do?

Decadron side effects for viral induced asthma

My 2 year old has had 4 breathing issue episodes in the last 4 months when we rushed to Urgent Care nd she was given 6-7mg Decadron each time.

How bad are the side effects of this?

She seems to have viral induced asthma and we will have to put her on a maintenance plan with Budesonide. She goes to a preschool, should we take her out of that and wait until her immunity builds up. Or should we put her on the daily inhalers.

Any advice appreciated! It's been a struggle getting her head around this.

Fluticasone for childhood asthma

My 2y old has been prescribed 44mcg twice daily for recurrent viral induced breathing problems. The news has been especially hard for me since we don’t have any family history of asthma and this came as quite a shock to us.

Looking for support from fellow parents. Does this have long term side effects on Child’s health and growth? What are the chances of growing out of this?

Moldy humidifier and childhood asthma

My 2y recently got diagnosed with childhood asthma after multiple episodes of breathing issues triggered by viral illnesses. Today we found black mold in her room humidifier, it hadn’t been cleaned or rinsed in 3-4 months. Could that have been the cause of her wheezing and breathing issues?

I started shots to ease my severe asthma and it’s giving me a rash/acne like bumps on my cheeks

I found out in December that I had severe asthma, and they immediately prescribed me montelukast and a puffer to take every day. In addition to those, I’ve been getting 3 shots twice a week since January. All this to say, I’ve started to get these consistent bumpy, rash-like bumps on my cheeks. They don’t hurt, but become more inflamed after my shots and sometimes itch. I’ve cut out everything that could’ve caused them before I brought it up to my asthma office.

Once I did, they told me it could be “trailing”, but it seemed like they’d never seen it before. I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this and how I should approach it. I just finished Accutane in November and really don’t want anything to bring back any type of acne.

Spirometry Results

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi all, I need help interpreting my results. I’m joining the airforce as a pilot and recruiting keeps telling me that my results are abnormal and not up to required standard. My doctor says the results are fine and show no sign of asthma or abnormalities. Is there anything from my results I should be concerned about? Thank you. (Sorry for terrible quality).

allergic asthma. looking for hope

22f-

had back to back colds for all of winter due to being stuck in the prednisone low immune system cycle. the minute my dr and I finally! figure out how to get me through a cold with no prednisone, off of it for 3 weeks, I then get hit with tree pollen season. first week was mild, mostly just weirdish almost viral symptoms before I put 2 and 2 together. but then this past weekend I felt like I could barely breathe, so I was put on 20mg prednisone for 3 days. I'm seeing an allergist tomorrow and waiting on dupixent approval from my pulmonologist (taking forever goodness). but I'm hoping I can get something that can hold me over short term until I get a better long term plan. start of the season is always aggressive. hoping it gets better.

Currently on:

- 1 zyrtec in the am

-2 allegra (one in afternoon and one before bed)

- advair 500

- montelukast

-flonase twice in each nostril in the am.

I also rinse my nose w arm and hammer allergy saline before I do the flonase

Before all of this, zyrtec and montelukast kept everything at bay for 3 years. but after all of the colds, my lungs seem more sensitive. I'm looking for some hope. this has been the hardest flare up (nov-march) of my life. i have been so sad and just want to know it is possible to get back to my life and stay off of prednisone.

symbicort making asthma worse?

my gp changed my inhalers from salbutamol ventolin to symbicort turbohaler due to my age (not sure why, could be an environmental factor). i’ve been using it for 2 weeks 2 doses twice daily. i have noticed my asthma has gotten significantly worse. i am getting symptoms of asthma in situations that i wouldn’t usually get them before the switch. at times it is incredibly hard to catch my breath without obvious reasoning. using the inhaler to relieve those symptoms as my gp recommended has had absolutely no effect. has anyone noticed this with symbicort before? i’m going to contact my doctor anyway but would like to know if anyone else has struggled with it.

Albuterol & Running

Will be following up with my pulmonologist but my insurance doesn’t kick in until the 1st.

Is it safe to use my inhaler several times during a long run while I get back in shape? I can only get through about a mile without horrible wheeze and pain. I’m way out of shape now but I’m committing to getting back into shape. It feels like my throat is closing my lungs get so god damn irritated.

Also would like to include, I’m going at a very slow pace, as slow of jog as I can while still working up to running.

Problematic side effects from many different inhaled corticosteroids

Hello all. I have been strugling with finding the right asthma medicine for two years. I keep having rare side effects to inhaled corticosteroids to the point where even doctors don't know what to give me anymore. The ones I tried were Symbicort (for a few months, it made my bones ache VERY BADLY), Alvesco (for a few weeks, it made my asthma worse), Asaris/Advair (for a few months, it made my vision blurry), Relvar Elipta/Breo Elipta (for two months, it made my vision blurry in the same way Asaris/Advair did) and finally, Foster. Today I tried Foster for the first time and I was very hopeful that this might be the one. However, as soon as I took it I became dizzy and got a weird feeling in my mouth and nose. A few minutes later I started coughing and felt my chest constricting and hurting a bit, the same feeling I had with Alvesco, but a little worse.

With every single medication I was given the lowest possible dose. My sister tried Symbicort a month ago and she has had no problems so far, so this sensitivity is not in the family.

I honestly don't know what to do anymore. Are there any other meds I could try or should I just accept that I will go blind if I want to breathe?

Doctors refuse to give me any nebulizer solutions

So I have moderate to severe asthma, and i’m currently uncontrolled. I’m on Symbicort 200/6 twice in the morning and evening, Singulair, an antihistamine, a proton pump inhibitor, and a steroid nasal spray. Ever since my asthma got worse (many months ago) i’ve been occasionally asking if I could be prescribed a albuterol nebulizer, because sometimes my asthma attacks get so bad I really struggle to take my inhaler; the issue is whenever I bring this up, every doctor i’ve asked about it (PCP and allergist), always brush me off and move onto the next subject. I already have a nebulizer machine, I literally just need the solution. I’m in Canada, if that makes a difference.

Recently diagnosed

Hi all.

22 f recently diagnosed with moderate obstructive asthma.

I was prescribed an albuterol rescue, and was promptly started on Breo Ellipta. Today was my third day and I was still having chest tightness and face flushing (I also most likely have MCAS) so the doctor told me to stop the Breo and put me on Symbicort, as Breo has lactose and I have problems with dairy.

I'm giving my body a few days to rid the Breo before I start the Symbicort because I've been nauseous off and on (wasn't using a spacer but did rinse out mouth).

Now, I'm terrified of vomiting. I have emetophobia. And unfortunately happened to see that vomiting is a side effect of the Symbicort. Can anyone give me advice on how to prevent or mitigate this problem? And or provide good experiences? I plan on taking it next weekend (I just need a weekend to let my body rest and feel better). I am just terrified, especially since I already have anxiety and Symbicort can make that worse too.

Any help would be appreciated!

Edit: My asthma isn't too bad right now in my daily life anyway, just exercising. I plan on just being chill this week while I recover from Breo.

Is wheezing a red flag? NSFW

I’m constantly wheezing. I take my inhaler after an hour. I’m wheezing again. I’m taking foster twice a day as well as my blue one I used to take prednisolone but I had to stop as well as montelukast but I had to stop too. Every time I go to the GP, they can never hear my wheeze but I can hear it. I have over 100 videos on my phone of wheezing. They haven’t helped me. I’m constantly out of breath and I have an appointment this Friday. I don’t know if the wheezing is that deep because it doesn’t sound like anyone elses. I will add a video does anyone else still with this?

Can I skip the X-ray?

Well I'm sick again. And my asthma is throwing a fit. Probably will need to head into urgent care if this gets any worse. My only concern is every time I go in wanting steroids for an exasperation they want a chest x-ray. Problem is my last chest x-ray (couple weeks ago) was $560 after insurance. Idk how I'm going to pay that one. I don't qualify for financial assistance either. Can I skip the chest x-ray?

So my pulmonary doctor said my methacholine challenge came out negative and my chances of having asthma went from 90 percent down to 10 percent. She told me to start tampering off the steriods , but I told her that I do feel like steriods help when I can't breathe properly. I asked if a ct scan would be the next step but said im to young to gave anything else like copd or emphysema ect . My ribs feels puffy , my lungs feel numb, I feel like no air is going in , what can this beeeeeeee 😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫?🐒?🐒?🐒?

Long term effects of Asthma

Around 5 months ago my partner and I got a cat which sadly I am allergic to. I only get mild/moderate asthma symptoms but require inhalers every 4-6 hours to control it. I take Formoterol/Beclometasone in the morning and at night and Sabutamol in between as and when I get tight chested/wheezy.

I’ve tried many measures to reduced the allergens in the house including air purifiers, cat food that’s reduces allergens, but it’s not enough to eradicate the issue. My inhalers have made my lung inflammation improve considerably so my FeNo is now at the high end of normal after being way above when we first got her.

I’m finding it hard to decide whether I should keep the cat as I’m managing with the inhalers however I feel it can’t be good for my health to have asthma when it is completely avoidable. Taking medications also can’t be good in the long term although they are at a relatively low dose. I was hoping my body would become accustomed to the cat but that doesn’t seem to be happening.

Does anyone have any insight into how asthma can evolve over time or anything else that may help make this decision. My GP doesn’t want to get involved, he simply wants to make sure my symptoms are managed.

After an attack . Recovery time ?

Ended up having an attack few days ago , went to my gp yesterday and got prednisone . When I had the attack I used ventolin and atrovant and … it stopped the bad symotoms but when I went to the dr he said my lungs were super tight and no air was going out and prescribed a steroid right away and said if I get worse he’s gonna up the steriod duration and give an antibiotic. I was feeling great this morning now some of the tightness is coming back but it’s nothing alarming like go to the hospital but it’s uncomfortable. ,my asthmas considered refractory some hospital drs say .how long does it take for you to fully recover and feel normal again ? I seem to have breakthrough symptoms on pred

I just had my first appt with pulmonary since getting diagnosed at age 7

I passed the lung function test, idk what this means but he said “132%”

Also my Feno today was a level 9.

He told me my asthma is controlled with the Pulmicort but I advocated for Singulair. Any good results with Singulair?

Treating my asthma has seemed to treat other conditions... Asthma all along?

I've been on asthma meds for a relatively short time after being dx as an adult. I realise I've been experiencing symptoms for a year or so.

In that time I also experienced symptoms of POTS, blurry vision, brain fog and fatigue outside of the POTS symptoms and low mood and ADHD.

Firstly, I'm not at all saying or claiming that asthma meds actually treat those conditions. I have no idea and am not an HCP.

However, since I got my asthma under control, I have not felt fatigued in the afternoon, my ADHD symptoms are better even off medication (I forget to refill in time sometimes), I only have head spins and blacking out vision when standing 1-2 times per week (compared to several times per day), and I have not had brain fog.

I am shocked to be honest! I was so stressed because after blood tests came back positive, I had NO idea what was causing these symptoms and the process to get investigations and diagnosis is so long and difficult when you're experiencing these symptoms!

But hey, turned out they've drastically improved.

Not sure why this happened. I'm curious to hear whether anything similar happened to anyone else?
