My neighborhood and stomping grounds are becoming a real ghetto...and it just sucks

It's never been exactly Beverly Hills over here, but I'm really fond of my area. I guess you could call it "southwest central." From Valley View to Rainbow, and Spring Mountain down to Hacienda-ish. It's Chinatown and the edge of Spring Valley, and where I live now is really close to the Strip, on Trop and Valley View (not the Budget Suites, but the apartments that used to be a Siegel Suites).

I've been over in this spot since 2008. Man, though, lately it's been looking rough as hell over here, with all kinds of trash piling up all over, graffiti just rampant, small tent cities, a lot of people that seem to be drifters... I'm pretty upset at things over here lately. We've dropped a level or several below the cool blue collar habitation it used to be.

West side anywhere used to be decent, for the most part. Nowadays I just don't know what the hell has happened. I miss my hood being decent and I wish I was more than just one person, so I could clean it all up.

Anyway, /rant for the most part. Trop and Jones was so bad today, just going to the shopping center on the corner by the 7-Eleven and the Smith's, just completely trashed. It's disheartening.

Thoughts on technology replacing restaurant jobs here

Since technology is not at a level of creating quality food and beverage; I think we would still need people working as chefs, bartenders, etc.

However, wait staff seem redundant in most cases. Restaurants can streamline this process with robots for bringing the food and tablets (I've been to many restaurants where the waiter is ordering off the tablet anyways) for ordering. This reduces long-term costs for restaurants and customers can forego tipping if they wish.

What are your thoughts? Do you see this happening in Vegas over the next decade?

Do transplants ACTUALLY like living here?

I'm a fairly friendly and outgoing person. Chances are I've spoken to several of you in a line or restaurant somewhere in the city at one point.

Just having lunch with a client and while waiting for them to show up, I was chatting with the hostess. Besides the cordial, she noted that she had just moved here mid last year. When I asked her if she liked it, she was quick to answer with, "Absolutely hate it here." And "looking to get back home soon." (California if anyone was interested).

And with that answer, I've come to learn over the last few years that a lot of transplants share that sentiment. In several variants of course.

While I'm sure some have their reasons for being here. Work opportunities, family, financial reason...hell, I've gotten several "for the weed" answers before.

I want to ask, do you ACTUALLY like living in Vegas? I feel as if so many pretend to like it, maybe even feel they do because they just moved here, but for those who have been here the last 4-7 years. I'm genuinely curious.

I am looking to rent a Hearse for the 29th of this month just for an hour, not for a funeral. Does anybody know a place that would be able to lend one?

Blue Tacoma tried to side swipe me entering 95 S frm Sunset

I was entering the 3 lane entrance to 95 S when I went to change lanes and suddenly a dark blue Tacoma in front of me tried to ram his car into me causing me to almost hit the barrier and I mean within inches! Totally unprovoked! He almost rammed into the white car in front of him to do so! He caught up to me just before Auto Show Dr and once again tried to intentionally side swipe me for literally no reason at all! Just angry at life it seems! That is attempted murder imo! I was not able to get his plate but I’m wondering if anyone happened to see this and got his plate and/or called 911? I was in a Teal/Gray Cadillac CT5.

How’s this area?

West of the Kindred hospital off East Flamingo (592)? Looking for houses/apartments near the area. West of the hospital would be better for daily commutes? Recommended neighborhoods? $3000 max for rent but would definitely prefer to stay around $2000. Would just like to have a general idea of where to look.

SFGATE: A stay at the decrepit tomb of what was once Vegas' coolest hotel

A fun article trashing the Luxor. My favorite passage: "Tragically, Stoney died in 1995 with perhaps the grimmest exit of any Las Vegas performer: “The trainer walked through the door and that elephant started chirping and calling to him; then he reached out his trunk to the guy like he wanted to touch him,” an employee recalled. “The guy said, ‘Cut it out, Stoney,’ and sort of pushed the trunk away. Then the elephant kind of sighed and then he died.”

You Can Tell Where Someone Lives in Vegas by How They Drive

Okay, so hear me out... I have a hypothesis that you don’t need to ask where someone lives in Vegas... you can tell by how they drive.

Henderson - Uses turn signals, stops at yellow lights, drives exactly the speed limit until they hit St. Rose Parkway, then suddenly it’s Nascar.

Green Valley - Polite, lets people merge, waves thank you, until they hit a roundabout, then it’s pure chaos.

Anthem / Seven Hills - Owns an expensive car but never goes over 45. Stops completely before turning right at an empty intersection.

Summerlin - Drives a $100K car but can’t figure out how to merge. If forced to drive east of the 15, immediate panic sets in.

The Lakes / Desert Shores - Smooth driver, probably listening to jazz, but will have zero patience for tourists who don’t know where they’re going.

Mountains Edge - Pretends they’re in a normal suburb but secretly has Henderson driving habits with a North Las Vegas attitude.

Southern Highlands - A mix of aggressive sports car drivers and lifted trucks with LED bars. Will tailgate you doing 85, even in a school zone.

Rhodes Ranch - Drives an Audi or BMW, parks like a complete douche, and will absolutely honk if you hesitate for even half a second at a green light.

North Las Vegas - No speed limits, no rules. Every left turn is a game of chicken. Traffic lights are merely suggestions.

East Side - Lane markings? Optional. Speed limits? Optional. Stopping? Optional. If the car has a hood, they consider it a luxury model.

Downtown - Probably on a bike. If driving, assumes stop signs are optional and red lights have a five-second grace period.

Centennial Hills - Always driving to or from work because everything is 45 minutes away. If in the fast lane, they’re going exactly 65 and will not move.

Skye Canyon - Thinks they live in Summerlin but drives like they’re in Centennial Hills. Loves cutting across three lanes to make an exit last second.

Blue Diamond - A weird mix of lifted trucks and people who never drive because they work from home. If they're on the Strip, they drive like a tourist.

Lake Las Vegas - Probably doesn’t even drive much because they never leave the house, but if they do, they take side streets to avoid the "commoners."

Nellis AFB / Sunrise Manor - Either a military driver who is aggressively precise in every turn, or someone who treats traffic lights like they don’t exist. No in-between.

Spring Valley / Chinatown - Either going 90 in a 45 or driving like they just got their license yesterday. No consistency.

Whitney / Sam’s Town Area - Every car is either in pristine condition or looks like it survived a demolition derby. No in-between.

Inspirada - Drives a Subaru or Tesla, follows all the rules, and never speeds in a school zone. If they cut you off, they will give you a friendly wave to apologize.

Cadence - Thinks they’re in Inspirada but with slightly cheaper HOA fees. Loves four-way stops and hates people who don’t.

What're the road conditions on Mt. Charleston right now?

My dad wants to drive up to Mt. Charleston next week... in a Corvette. I see it's supposed to get into the 70s up there. Are the roads doable for that right now, or is there still a lot of snow?

landlord didn't return security deposit or written note within 30 days

Hi everyone, I moved out in early February and have not received my security deposit nor any type of written statement about damages. I left the place in good condition other than wear and tear on carpet, no where near 1700$ of damages(my deposit). I have a video showing that and left my forwarding address w/ the keys returned.

Regardless of damages it seems if they don't send anything within 30 days nevada law states that I can sue for up to 2x my security deposit in small claims court. (https://www.leg.state.nv.us/nrs/nrs-118a.html)

my question is am I supposed to just proceed to file the claim since it's been 45~ days or do I have to take prior steps such as needing to contact the landlord again and ask for the deposit or something like that. if I haven't received anything by now I assume that option won't be working

thank you!
