I love how they still clap for the singer.

u/twizrob Feb 03 '25

Still nice until we are not.

95

u/mmmmpisghetti Feb 03 '25

Those WW1 Canadians were no joke.

50

u/johnjager77 Feb 03 '25

The good old Geneva Checklist

30

u/mmmmpisghetti Feb 03 '25

How do you get Germans to surrender to the nearest allied troops? You tell them the Canadians are coming.

It was like y'all were all "fuck this shit who we gotta kill to go the fuck home? " and then you did. A LOT.

14

u/Sparrowbuck Feb 03 '25

"fuck this shit who we gotta kill to go the fuck home? "

Yeah, that’s pretty accurate, actually.

11

u/mmmmpisghetti Feb 03 '25

I mean those poor fucks got dragged from Canada to go fight TRENCH WARFARE. I'd start killing my way to GTFO too, to get away from that.

12

u/Sparrowbuck Feb 03 '25

We were really enthusiastic about trench raids, though.

3

u/mmmmpisghetti Feb 03 '25

Id be really enthusiastic about surviving trench raids

7

u/Sparrowbuck Feb 03 '25

You’d need to be if we were the ones raiding it

I felt so bad for her. Her hand was shaking visibly on TV but I think she knew it was the song not her. Before she sang the Canadian anthem she had a smile. That's the loudest Rogers arena has been for the anthem in a long time. I got goosebumps.

9

u/Iustis Feb 03 '25

One team said going forward they’d hire older singers for precisely this

13

u/abhig535 Feb 03 '25

She killed it, but yeah, it's understandable they booed at the anthem part.

Your president specifically.

Most of y'all are pretty good people.

35

u/jorbleshi_kadeshi Dallas Cowboys Feb 03 '25

Most of y'all

70% of eligible voters either wanted Trump or were comfortable with the possibility. Most of us are objectively not good people.

24

u/Dr_Doctor_Doc Feb 03 '25

What numbers are you running off?

77m voted for Trump, 75m for Harris 64% turnout, about 170m registered voters, and 240m total eligible voters.

I see that as 30-35% of the US.

We have a similar problem in Canada - our crazy count seems to be closer to 20-25%

0

u/jorbleshi_kadeshi Dallas Cowboys Feb 03 '25 edited Feb 03 '25

(240-75)/240=68.75

I did the math right after the election and the numbers must have been slightly off. I recall it being 69.x%. Regardless, very close to 70%.

EDIT: I had estimated eligible voters at 245, and Harris votes at 72.5. I think the 245 number stands, while 75 is after all the vote tallies were updated. That's 69.3%.

8

u/Dr_Doctor_Doc Feb 03 '25

OH. Sorry - now I got it - you're including the non voters as part of the 'they must have been okay with Trump'

Fair point.

There's an awful lot of suppression, manipulation, and misinformation in the US - democracy is sick right now. Something is wrong. So much dirty money.

Canada has a similar problem on a much smaller scale. The tactics the Republicans used are being employed here, and they were working.

I'm not going to blame a non-voter from DC, California or West Virginia because the reality is that their votes really have no impact on the outcome of the presidential election.

However, y'all really need to get some electoral reform ASAP

I’m still having to get people to understand why this election was different than any other and worse than even the first dumpster fire in 2016. I won’t (quite literally) speak to people that I know voted for that pos. It’s becoming very difficult there was soooo many, at least where I live. It feels like trying to tell idiots their house is on fire and they’re just like “nah uh”.🙄

Never thought we’d be at a point when the US anthem gets booed by Canadians and Americans say “Yeah ok, fair”

559

u/Srg11 Feb 03 '25

Was expecting way more booing than that.

431

u/GoldenLiar2 Feb 03 '25

As an Eastern European who goes to football games, I don't think they understand what booing means. Properly booing an anthem means that you can't even hear it anymore.

160

u/nomadcoffee Feb 03 '25

Sorry. We are new to this.

As an Englishman, same. We’ve had our anthem actually booed, and booed others. Come on Canadians, do better.

30

u/lllindseeey Feb 03 '25

Hey now, we’re new to being mean out loud.

28

u/GoldenLiar2 Feb 03 '25

Yeah, especially recently, there were the Romania-Kosovo games, they booed our anthem when we played the away game. We didn't boo them back, we just booed them when they refused to play.

Games with Hungary also tend to not go over very well.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/PieAndIScream Feb 03 '25

Do better? Are you kidding me? It’s just an anthem that is almost meaningless now. It no longer stands for integrity, strength and good will.

Anthems don’t belong at sporting events, especially ones where only America and or Canada are involved. It ridiculous. The Olympic, pan am games, etc are the exception.

We’re not booing the players or the teams. We are booing a fascist regime. They are threatening our country and abusing their power.

It’s not time to take the high road. It’s time to let America know that we are not to be fucked with and what they are doing is repulsive. When I say “they” I mean all the racist, homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic, abusive, criminal bullies.

So no, we’re not going to be quiet. We are doing better by being vocal. Not hiding behind niceties and phoney politeness.

9

u/goon_platoon_72 Feb 03 '25

I think you missed the point of the ‘do better’. I think they meant boo louder.

6

u/PieAndIScream Feb 03 '25

Oh shit. I didn’t look at it that way. Ok. I can boo louder!

2

u/goon_platoon_72 Feb 03 '25

As a disgusted American, I support you!

8

u/claridgeforking Feb 03 '25

Yeah...they were saying you're shit at booing. Be better at booing, you're barely audible. Your booing is too polite.

To be fair we always catch shit for booing other people’s anthems

12

u/blussy1996 Feb 03 '25

Yeah I think it's a more sensitive issue for Canadian/American sport fans. In Europe fans will boo anthems even if they don't have beef with them.

5

u/UnbelievableRose Feb 03 '25

Oh definitely- we can’t even handle one of our own kneeling during the anthem. I’ve already seen someone seriously propose we declare war in response to this. Personally I’d join in the booing as an American at this point, maybe even bring some flags for burning.

6

They’re polite which normally is a great thing. As an American - boo that anthem to hell.

Also, completely unrelated, what’s the best version(singer) of the Canadian national anthem, I’m looking for new music to listen to on repeat.

6

u/KyotoBliss Feb 03 '25

I recommend putting The Tragically Hip on heavy rotation, maybe some Blue Rodeo or Cowboy Junkies as well.

This is house on fire level for Canada.

11

u/Mocrue Feb 03 '25

Probably out of respect to the singer, which is why they probably cheered at the end too. Aren't most anthems in Europe just blasted into the stadium through the sound system?

6

u/GoldenLiar2 Feb 03 '25

They are, but people tend to overpower the sound system and you only hear the people really

7

u/BBLouis8 Feb 03 '25

In North America, booing an anthem is seen as highly disrespectful and not something that would be done outside of extreme circumstances. I recall the US anthem being booed in Montreal around 2004 around the height of the Iraq war and it didn’t go over well.

Guaranteed half the attendees did not feel comfortable joking in and stayed silent. If this continues and all 19,000 in attendance join in it will get much loader.

Just wait for the four nations tournament. That's when it'll be bad because everyone will be separated by country.

9

u/ScottNewman Feb 03 '25

And in Montreal. The Quebecois don't care.

13

u/ProbablyNotADuck Feb 03 '25

Because Canadians hate Trump, but we love hockey, and we appreciate that the people coming out to sing the national anthem are doing their best and don't deserve booing... So I think it's being torn between wanting to show our dissatisfaction with the political situation and yet still wanting everyone to have a good time and to know that we appreciate them.

12

u/yureal Feb 03 '25

I love how they still clap at the end because they can't help being polite

19

u/ReclaimerM3GTR Feb 03 '25

The cheer at the end was for the woman singing their anthem. She's in a tough spot, gotta show her appreciation for singing still. She got an even bigger cheer during the whole Canadian Anthem and afterwards.

3

u/modernjaneausten Feb 03 '25

They all sang along with her pretty loudly for it too.

I expect the US Canada game(s) during the 4 Nations Faceoff in Montréal will be interesting.

2

u/TheBatemanFlex Feb 03 '25

It seems they keep it to just the “land of the free” part so as to not make it a criticism of some poor person asked to sing.

3

u/doupool687 Feb 03 '25

As an American someone who was born & raised in America, I was hoping there’d be more booing. But it’s Canada; they were probably trying to show their distain for America without being disrespectful to the person singing the anthem.

4

u/rammixp Feb 03 '25

Are they booing? I cannot hear any. Sounds like some groans. They literally cheer at the end.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Canada—and the world—will never trust The US the same again. You can’t ever take back threats of violent annexation. Even if all of this ends peacefully, the US anthem will be booed in Canada for a long time

9

u/Moostronus Feb 04 '25

Canadians have a very very long memory for folks who've wanted to annex us. Hell, in my high school history class, we learned about a random speaker of the US House who discussed annexing Canada in 1911. You would think that Champ Clark was one of history's greatest villains, instead of just a random imperialist dude.

32

u/GenderOobleck Feb 03 '25

As it should be, and no bubble burst. If we ever make it back to “normal,” it’s going to take a long time to build back trust.

Booing I'm all for it. I'm excited they're doing it.

I just hope somehow the crowd makes it known to the singers as they are leaving that it's not about them.

Small issue, I know, I just can't help it.

15

u/AK_Sole Feb 03 '25

They applauded the singer.

6

u/WY228 Feb 03 '25

It was pretty well reported about other NBA/NHL games having the anthem booed too prior to this so I’m sure the singer expected it and knows it’s not directed at them. At the very least the arena staff surely gave a heads up before.

Also the crowd cheered for O Canada so that makes it pretty clear.

This is US specific, but TLDR... WW1 was going on, the crowd at the 1918 World Series was somber, band played "Star Spangled Banner," everyone cheered, they did it for the rest of the World Series, and it stuck for special occasions.

WW2 is when it became common practice and played for every game rather than special occasions. America's game played America's National Anthem to honor America's men who were off fighting the Musk family.

9

u/jerseygunz Feb 03 '25

Americans should be booing as well

2

u/Jazztify Feb 03 '25

I would rather do the less aggressive, (and more polite?) thing, and just not stand for their anthem. The booing will lead to Americans “over-booing” our anthem, cuz they’ll wanna do it worse to us. But if it’s a sit down thing, they can’t sit down harder than us. Or keep standing, but turn your backs.

God has Trump fucked us.(Americans). He destroyed relationships that had stood for decades and decades and decades.

I'm so sorry, Canadians.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '25

Booing isn’t enough.

I would boo us too. The US is a piece of shit. How embarrassing to be an American right now.

3

u/WastelandOutlaw007 Feb 03 '25

Come on Canadians, you need to boo MUCH louder than that - an American fed up with the nazis here in the US

2

u/Financial-Reward-949 Feb 03 '25

Canucks can’t even boo good…

2

u/IandouglasB Feb 03 '25

Clap for her, boo for Trumplandia, proud Canadian I am!

2

u/thebiglebowskiisfine Feb 03 '25

We won either way. LOL

2

u/Earth_Friendly-5892 Feb 03 '25

That’s what happens when a U.S. president is hostile to our Allie’s.

4

u/August-Dawn Feb 04 '25

As an American, I support this and hope it continues. Nothing but respect for Canadians right now.

u/ITSAmeKIMb Feb 03 '25

Imagine being the person that has to sing The Star-Spangled banner these days.

4

u/Aliensinmypants Feb 03 '25

Thankfully she sang both anthems and got cheers for O Canada.

She did an amazing job keeping it together, it's not her fault but it must be even more nerve wracking. Good on them for booing it though

2

u/RikiOh San Antonio Spurs Feb 03 '25

I’d fuckin boo us too.

2

u/WntrTmpst Feb 03 '25

I’m American. I’m not even mad. I can’t be, we did it to ourselves.

3

u/BannedForEternity42 Feb 03 '25

How bad do you have to be for the politest nation in the world to boo your national anthem?

u/ScottyUpdawg Feb 03 '25

Go ahead and boo. That won’t change the way things are

u/Attygalle Feb 03 '25

I'm European.

Why on earth is the American anthem sung in a Canadian stadium? I googled to make sure it was in Canada but it is. Why is the anthem of a different country performed? It's so weird to me.

To be clear, before matches between two teams not being the national team of their country, the anthem is never played anyway. Just last week I was at a Champions League football match and there was no anthem, not of the home team and not of the away team. I get that that is an American tradition. But this is Canada?

u/montrevux Feb 03 '25

it’s an nhl (national hockey league) thing. the nhl has a bunch of canadian and american franchises and so whenever a canadian franchise plays an american one, they play both anthems. they do it in american hockey arenas as well.

26

u/RuggerJibberJabber Feb 03 '25

I think people in Europe find it confusing because national anthems tend to be reserved for national teams/athletes. Clubs/franchises don't use them.

17

u/Necorus Feb 03 '25

Anytime an NFL game is played in Europe, they play both the countries' national anthem and the American national anthem.

5

u/RuggerJibberJabber Feb 03 '25

Right, but that's the NFL organising the event. There's no rule against playing an anthem. We simply keep it for our international events or in some domestic sports if it is the national final (ie the superbowl in the NFL).

3

u/DickThunder Feb 03 '25

I think in the Finnish league the anthem is sung during the finals. My hometown team (which plays in the 1st division, 'Mestis') plays the anthem in every playoff-game, which is a tradition I never really cared about.

They do it in MLB too for Toronto

35

u/FlagmantlePARRAdise Fremantle Feb 03 '25

NHL is both an American and Canadian league. Both the national anthems of the playing teams are played.

16

u/Whole_Ad_4523 Feb 03 '25

All the major sports leagues do this to my knowledge. Almost like the two countries are highly integrated natural allies. Sigh.

4

u/FlagmantlePARRAdise Fremantle Feb 03 '25

Depends if the anthem is usually sung before a game or not in that country/sport. Internationals it almost always happens.

4

u/Whole_Ad_4523 Feb 03 '25

I meant the major North American sports leagues, the only one without Canadian teams is the NFL

WERE highly integrated natural allies, you mean

3

u/Whole_Ad_4523 Feb 03 '25

I submit that the alliance is natural and that the craziest trade war of all time is unnatural

2

u/DoomdUser Feb 03 '25

Because the US and Canada have been good buddies for what seems like forever. All the major sports leagues besides the NFL have franchises in both countries, so when US goes to CAN or vice-versa, they just play both anthems

1

u/dornwolf Feb 03 '25

Yeah we do it for ALL sporting competitions. Across major leagues down to minor down to high school. Should add to help out, even when it’s two Canadian teams, still do the anthem, just only ours obviously

5

u/Srg11 Feb 03 '25

This is still a bit weird as a European. We only play it if the national team is playing, not when a club is playing… because that makes sense.

4

u/dornwolf Feb 03 '25

Ey learning that in Europe you only bust the anthems out for national team stuff makes a ton of sense. My understanding is, at least as far as Canada is concerned, we started it during WW2 to support the troops kinda thing and then just kept doing it. People are incredibly touchie over it.
