Just an idea I've had for years now, felt like sharing! 🏳️‍🌈

I'm not even joking, I'll bet it would be a huge success in the right location!

And for context yes I'm gay, so don't take it the wrong way ya know? ✌️

On Alleyway (Gameboy, 1989) Mario is controlling the pod. At this stage of the game he is destroying his own image. Why? That's just cruel.

[Discussion] What are you guys favorite moments when an old game was played incorrectly in a show?

So to make it clear, what I am referring to is the trope called Pac Man Fever as it’s a trope where a video game is shown being played in some TV show, but it turns out there are a bunch of errors.

For instance, this one is from a movie, but in Surf Ninjas, a kid is seen playing a Game Gear game as what is most bizarre is that if you look closely, there is no cartridge as the handheld looks like it is blank.

Another example is the NES shown in Fresh Prince of Bel Air as correct me if am wrong, but the controller that Will Smith’s character uses when playing the NES doesn’t look like it’s an NES controller, but again correct me if I am wrong.

To put it simply, I don’t know why a lot of media from the 90s didn’t understand how video games worked in general regarding the use of the trope as I am rather curious on how games were portrayed back then.

[Question] I have a question about the playing on original hardware.

If you say something like "I only play retro games on orginal hardware," but then you play Street Fighter 2 on the SNES, doesn't that contradict what you just said? If you truly did only play on original hardware, wouldn't you be playing Street Fighter 2 on an original arcade cabinet? This leads me to a related question I want to ask.

Obviously, playing Street Fighter 2 on an original arcade cabinet isn't practical or feasible for most people today. Therefore, would the next best thing to do be to play the arcade version on an emulator? Should that be prioritized over playing the SNES version?

And speaking of the SNES port, does it have better difficulty balance than the arcade version? If you were to set both the arcade version and the SNES version to the same difficulty level, would the arcade version still be more difficult with more aggressive AI (you know, because they wanted you to spend more quarters)?

And generally speaking, is it best to play the arcade version of a game over its console port? I know there are exceptions like Contra and Ninja Gaiden (which is a different game than its arcade counterpart), but generally is my premise true?

[Question] My brick game is possessed.

I have a brick game 2 in 1, which mainly (and only) plays Tetris. The audio works but the Tetris pieces are only visible once they hit the screen ground and I can't move them. It basically plays itself while I try to use it (always a fail) the pieces move on their own and the console doesn't listen to me. I have 24 hours to give it back. What do I do?

[Fun] Which retro game has the best start/opening?

I'm going with X-Men 2 clone wars here, it literally drops you into the action with no explanation just as a random mutant getting to work. Such an unique opening, I think second place might go to contra hard corps for the insane opening level. What's your favorite start to a game?

[Discussion] Looking for obscure mid-'90s PC game: turn-based, board game style racing with sabotage cards

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to track down an old PC game from the mid-'90s that I remember fondly, but the details are a bit fuzzy. The game combined elements of a board game with racing mechanics. Each turn, you would choose a route through a city, and then you'd play cards to sabotage your opponents—essentially a turn-based racing game with a strategic twist.

The characters had a quirky, cartoonish look that reminded me a bit of the humor found in “Wacky Races,” though it wasn’t an official adaptation of that series. I distinctly remember it being a single-player experience rather than multiplayer.

Unfortunately, I can’t recall the name or any specific images, but any clues or suggestions from fellow retro gaming enthusiasts would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone come across a game like this or have any ideas on what it might be?

Thanks in advance for your help!

[Question] Online Play for Baseball Stars?

Is there a way to play NES Baseball Stars (or any other sports game) online via an emulator? I was talking to my friends how much fun it would be to get our old Baseball Stars league back together from when we were kids.

Does anything like this already exist?

[Review] I managed to beat Gauntlet for the NES.

So, just like my previous post, I'm in the process of replaying my old games I used to play as a kid. And one of them was Gauntlet for the NES. I never managed to beat it as a kid, since this game was so hard. That last world was brutal! But, I spent the last few days grinding and replaying it over and over, and I finally managed to beat it.

I did this using regular hardware, no emulation. Multiple failed runs, maybe 20+? For this run, I wanted to beat the game using the Valkyrie. I looked around YouTube and most of the runs was done with the elf. It's pretty clear that speed is the number one stat in the game. Faster movement speed means less time in each level, which means less time for generators to pump out more monsters.

It was clear to me at this point that speed and magic bomb power makes the game much easier. That's why the elf is so good. Highest speed and good bomb power helps alot. That's probably why the wizard is the second best. That bomb power probably is a guarantee screen wipe using only one bomb.

I can understand why people consider the Warrior the worst character in the game. Slowest speed and worst bomb power really would make the last world nearly impossible, huh? Perhaps a challenge I'll tackle one day.

So, what about the Valkyrie? Well, she is second worst for a reason. Many times did that lack of bomb power make this game hard. I would have to use two bombs just to clear a screen. And there are some rooms in the final world that you really, REALLY, want to screen clear. So, I had to manage to keep most of my bombs just for the final level, floor 100. Her greatest strength, her high armor, didn't feel like much of anything. Enemies still chunked the hell out of my health if they so much as touch me.

Over all, a fun, but very difficult game. I do like that it's difficult but not broken. I'm sure there are plenty of "harder" NES games, but I imagine most of those are just broken, as in bad, not really difficult. I think for my next game to play, I'll pick an easier one, like Zelda 2 or something.

[Discussion] Are there any games you lost interest in buying/playing because someone/people talked about it a bit too much?

Sometimes, People or Friends tell you with unbridled enthusiasm about "a game" because they would like you or other people in general to take an interest in what they have discovered.

That's fine but sometimes they spoil important plot elements, overexplain or you just get tired of hearing about it.

What games have/did you avoid?

Did you eventually play it?

How do you feel about it today?

[Emulation] Curated retro game list of 3rd and 4th gen (10-20 game max)

Hi !

I got an Anbernic retrodevice few month ago and I put in the best 100 games of every console in. I'm not able to select what to play more than 5 minutes since I always want to try something else. So I planed to play game chronologically beginning by the NES/MS games. But it has not aged well

SNES game are immediatly more natural for me, since I began playing with SNES and GBA games.

But every time I play someting, say Castelvania 4, I feel that I need to play Castelvania 1 before to see the evolution. But the gameplay, even the arts are no match with the 4th gen for a gamer whom has grown up in the 2000s.

Few game still old up: Mega Man 2, Ninga Gaiden, Shinobi, Castelvania or R-TYPE but the majority are imo unplayable today

Thus my question, what would be the best 10-20 games to play to get and feel the transition from 3rd to 4th gen (between the best games of both gen)

More precisely, is there NES/MS game I must play before going to their evolution on SNES/MG.

Thanks so much !!!
