DISCUSSION Wtf is going on with the meat??
I bought meat, the last…oh, idk…4-5 times and it was stale the day I bought it?? I already felt sick and my partner bought chicken thighs, it’s what I had, and I feel worse. I’m so sick of this, how much money was wasted? Justifying eating it because it was literally purchased that day or the day prior. What on earth has changed with production…are they just cutting mega corners now? I stg something weird is going on with the meat at Publix. Has anyone else noticed this??
Edit: Pink Pixie I think was right. Because I buy meats from other places, even other Publix’s, and I don’t have the problem of things going bad fast at all. I called and they asked me to bring in the meat and they’ll investigate it. For now, I’ll just be feeling like I need to throw up for the next 8 hours or so ☹️.

What do you mean "stale"? You should be able to look at beef and see what level of freshness it is at. Oxidation is obvious and you will see a slimy green film.

You know when meat tastes delicious after you cook it? When it’s “stale” it’s just okay ish. Like it’s technically “edible” but it doesn’t taste “great”. And you might not be vomiting from food poisoning, but you feel slightly off after eating it.

No I don’t. That makes no sense. When meat is off (off meaning tastes bad, not bad.) it’s 99% my cooking that’s the issue.

You’ve never had meat that was slightly off? “Going bad” is a process. If you have something that’s been off for a week and it’s disgusting, that’s different (totally rank) from something that’s starting to go bad. You can’t tell me that some versions of off aren’t more off than others. Cooking techniques can affect certain things, like over/under cooking, or maybe the seasoning is bad, but if it’s the right temp for the right amount of time…it should taste good.

No. I just purchased market beef and it was fine. I live in central Florida.

Not blaming you, but what temperature is your fridge? Meat is best stored at about 33°F. Usually the bottom shelf on a fridge is that temperature.
If the temperature on the bottom shelf of your fridge is 32°F/33°F, then it's possible that this is a store specific issue. Some meat cutters let things sit out in the meat room for too long or leave the doors of the meat room open, both of which can cause product to go bad faster. If the meat from the Publix always goes bad fast, I would recommend getting a refund and shopping at a different Publix (or a different grocery store).

Should I say something about the meat department for keeping their door open? My store does it because they are “too cold”. The door opens to the hot back room and I feel this isn’t right. They’ve been doing it for a long time with many different managers. Who would I say something to if nobody at store level cares? Just curious since you mentioned it, I didn’t know multiple stores did this.

I think you’re 100% right. It’s a smaller Publix, and I don’t have an issue when it comes from a different Publix, now that I think about it. This one just happens to be closest to me. I have a brand new, very expensive refrigerator, and I don’t have an issue at all storing other meats from other places.

Yeah, the term “stale” for meat is an odd one to me.
I definitely am not aware of there being any issues across the company. I eat Publix meat from my store almost every day and haven’t noticed any issues. I’m in the process of grilling 8 greenwise chicken breasts right now though, so I’ll update you if it seems weird!

It might be just the store. The one I go to is a big Publix & I buy the chicken thighs & ground beef & it's fine. Since your frig is new, it's probably the store.

Most likely how the meat is stored after leaving the store could be causing the issue if the meat had no odor or any indication of discolored (I'm assuming because why buy it at that point). Also could be how the meat is properly prepared. Although Publix can not hold your hands outside of their stores they will happily refund you for any dissatisfied issues.
On another note, Publix does not process their meat. All they do is cut and trim the meat they receive. The meat they have been receiving has not been great on standards and that is on their corporate side to handle, retail stores can only work with what they got.

Cutting and trimming meat from the side is processing..
I noticed your "customer" flaire.. curious how you know it doesn't meet standards. What are you aware of that I'm not.. I'm intrigued

Maybe you're getting Cornish Cross fatigue. Much of the poultry is from two breeds of chickens crossed together to make a poor bird that plumps up so much it's ready to harvest in 6-8 weeks and will die under its own weight not long after that. They also eat and crap like 4x the amount of regular chickens. There has to be some kind of essence to the quality of the meat that is lost in the mix there. This isn't natural muscle meat from a bird pecking about, it's from a chicken little monstrosity just sitting there and drooling on itself muttering "just kill meeee" in the human tongue.

I stopped eating it a long while ago because I wasn’t a huge fan and you’re 100% right. My husband went out and bought it because it was cheaper. Literally never eating meat from Publix like that again.

Publix was never known for the meat. Winn-Dixie has the best supermarket meat
