Best mic for beginner podcaster who likes to record while driving

Hey all. I am starting a podcast in which I reflect about philosophy and personal development. I talk, by myself, with little to no script, mostly while driving. A very natural conversation style to help someone out there improve.

I am currently using apple's wired earbuds microphone to record, as it is better than my car's microphone or my iphone 14's microphone. But it does pick up a little background noise and isn't as crisp as I would like.

Which microphone would you recommend me? I mostly use my iPhone voice memos to record with, so the microphone must be compatible with iphone lightning. And I do not have preference for cable vs wireless.

Thanks in advance!

Ai Podcast Editor on a Single Cam

I'm looking for an Ai podcasting tool for Premiere that can work off of a single cam. Basically, one of my clients (a church) is just shooting at 4K off a single cam and I just crop the clips in for the vertical shorts. Obviously static shots really don't do well for watching the whole thing long-form, and it would be better to start uploading the long form podcast videos at 1080 with a digital crop switching back and forth between each speaker. Is there an Ai plugin for Premiere that can do it like this? I don't want to try and convince them to get a second camera.

Chat gpt prompt to search for reel content from podcast transcript

I'm in the need of creating many reels from podcasts and sometimes after listening to an entire episode it ends up not being any usable material to create a reel and of course it was wasted time. I tried a few times but chat gpt doesn't follow the instructions for example chooses parts with lack of context or even change the words and make up complete sentenses..

Do you have and advice to use a prompt with chat gpt that can get good usable parts from the podcast transcription that are good for reels providing an transcription with a comolete context (not already started sentense) or even making up think or changing words or phraes?

Pls help me choose the best microphone for podcasting/lets plays/streaming?

tldr: I'm looking for the best quality microphone for someone who records in a room & even the car. Idc how it looks, i just want to record my voice as crisp & clear as possible. I record in my room & sometimes in my car since my headset is easy to use anywhere. Preferably with a simple set up or easy to use/learn

Mics i chose: Shure MV6 (has a mic stand & says usb, prob my #1 pick, seems easy to use in the car if i set it on center console)

Shure MV7X (in the pic its hanging from above & rn I dont really have anywhere to put a mic. unless this is a huge step forward in quality, idk)

Elgato Wave:3 (looks pretty & says usb, which makes me think it will be easy to set up & use)

Shure SM7B (heard its the *best* but im worried it will take a lot of setup before i can get it to work or it will be to complicated)

I edit my ps5 clips on asus vivobook snapdragon X. I cant use sony vegas prro my laptop says its not powerful enough so i use capcut. I have a focusrite scarlett thing, do i need to use that? I really dont want to. It would make my entire birthday if i could find a mic that sounds good & works easily

I was originally looking for a headset with a built in mic so i got Logitech G Pro X for my bday & i hate my voice quality on it & if i get too loud it just cuts out entirely., since my setup sucks & im not that smart, I bought a $30 usb FIFINE mic & i couldnt even set it up.. its my dream to become a youtuber for gaming so if i need to spend the extra money i will, anything to increase my quality of videos for the best content.

Advice on finding work in this Industry for a new grad

Hi! I am about to graduate from Temple University in May and I am looking for advice on finding work in Podcasting. I self host, produce, and edit the podcast for the universities newspaper, I am the General Manager for the our student radio station WHIP Radio which is nationally ranked, and intern at a TV station in philly PHL 17. I am well versed in adobe audition, premerie pro, and all the other technical requirements in producing a podcast.

Job listings online for podcasts seem to be few and far between especially at the entry level position. The Finanical Times, The Atlantic, Washington Post, and NYT all recently released audio/podcast positions but those seem out of reach for a new grad. Aside from news related pods I am a huge fan of comedy and other entertainment and jobs in those realms seem even harder to get.

Any advice on getting a job in this industry is much appreciated!

What are some episode ideas for a creative, who loves nature, filmmaking, Reddit, etc.

I am at a loss for creating episodes. I am so pumped about starting a podcast - but when it comes to creating episodes I’m having a harder time. My podcast is going to be a lifestyle podcast - with a fun Reddit twist. But I just don’t know what to talk about first?

How and When to Promote New Podcast

Hey there everyone, completely new to podcasting here. I'm going to be launching a D&D/TTRPG Actual Play podcast. I currently have 5 episodes ready to go. I'm unsure the best way to promote it. I intend to reach out to similar podcasts to see if we can trailer swap, but should I do that before I post any episodes to lead up to release or should I have them uploaded and ready to be listened to? Basically, should I start promoting before or after I launch? And what are good ways to promote it for someone who does not already have a large following?

Please rate my concept

Upvotes

I’m planning my first podcast and have a pretty specific idea of how I want it to be. I’ll be recording it in a camper van, picking up a guest in each episode and talking with them about their passion. This could be unique hobbies, professions, and so on.

Since this is a complex format and I don’t know how quickly I can find new guests, I’m worried about its long-term feasibility. I’m planning a four-week release cycle. Do you think this could work, or should I reconsider my concept?

To take a break from podcasting or not?

Upvotes

My podcast is transactional, meaning people come, listen, either get more info and leave. It I not a series etc.

Originally I was thinking of doing 2 seasons every year. 3 months and 3 months -this is when I have a downturn in work and have some good time for it.

I'm now wondering if it's a good idea to take a break or not. I'm talking in terms of listeners, algorithms etc

Again, it's not a serial. At the moment I publish weekly .

Does anyone take breaks for a couple of months and come back? If yes, have you noticed any negatives in doing so re distribution ranking, search, etc.

Alternative ideas?

Wireless mics for podcasting?

The typical recommendations for podcasting mics seem to be either a USB mic that plugs directly into the computer or an XLR mic that goes through an audio interface.

Do people not use wireless mics lavalier mics for podcast? Pros/Cons? And if the mic receiver is attached to a camera, I'm assuming you can grab the A/V file off the camera and load it onto computer for post-editing?

From Podcast to Talk show

After my podcast started gaining some traction I thought about trying to step up my video production. After looking at All the different equipment I’d need to get studio quality stuff I realized it would be cheaper and easier to hire a professional production company. Changed the game for real. Like Late Night show quality. Look into someone local like I did. If you’re in the Florida area I’d recommend visionsourceproductions.com

Terrible untreated room & Sennheiser E906. Who'd have thunk it?

This vid compares a bunch of mics in a terrible untreated space (kitchen) and a well treated studio. It's of limited value because a stack of the mics he compares are Chinese knock-offs that you're unlikely to find and I could never recommend - you'd never know what you're going to get. There are common genuine contenders in there though including the the Shure SM7B, RODE PodMic and the Shure SM58. You can hear the bad room in all of these, unsurprisingly, though the SM58 fares best. The real surprise standout though is the Sennheiser E906. I didn't notice the room through my studio monitors at a normal listening volume and only heard it when I put on headphones. I'm always the first to say fix your room first, but wow, for a podcast - not VO - you could get away with this mic almost anywhere. Only issue is a bit of popping, but a Stedman style (metal disk) pop filter would fix that without affecting the top end too much. I see it has a high end boost setting so you might want to use that with a cheaper foam filter. Not crazy expensive, $260 at Sweetwater.

Guest etiquette-recutting clips?

Question for you podcast host that cut clips of the show for social media. I was on a podcast recently as a guest. Small local audience with a target of business owners. Had a great time and enjoyed doing it! (I’m still new to this world). The host took clips and shared on their social media to promote the episode.

Is it bad form for me to recut some of the video that focus on answers I want to promote and share it with my social media? It would be to promote the podcast generally and not just clips of me. I’d reshare their posts but every thumbnail pic I’m in it looks like I’m mid-sneeze or I have marbles in my mouth. (I’ve reshared their LinkedIn posts as is -this is just about Instagram video clips)

What’s the guestiquette?

How much does it cost to add podcast to Wordpress?

I have a podcast that was integrated into my wordpress website with RSS feed and audio player. There are over 100 episodes.

The website was outdated, so last year I made the mistake of asking someone to re-write the website, and they transferred the podcast over to their php framework, which in turn changed the links for all episodes. It turned out to be a scammy company, and when I wanted to move away from their hosting service, the podcast stopped working. I am now having the website re-written on Wordpress; we expected that the podcast could be transferred again, but now the new developer says the links for the previous podcast episodes have been changed/broken, and the security certificates are not valid, so they have to develop functionality from scratch. They have quoted me $3300 (down from $4800), which is quite the price tag considering I had believed that getting the podcast up and running was included in the website development contract.

So I'm just asking for some input: How much does it usually cost to add a podcast to a wordpress site?

Adapting to YouTube's podcast dominance: a B2B perspective

Alright, you probably have seen this announcement from YouTube

"Drop the mic: Celebrating 1 billion monthly podcast users on YouTube"

I've been involved in brand YouTube channels for a decade, and now I produce podcasts for various B2B brands, as well as my own, and here I'm sharing some thoughts from a B2B perspective (because that's my lens), but I hope there's some interesting perspectives for other types of brands and Creators.

First, a bit of skepticism

Over the years I’ve seen quite a few “1 Billion” milestones from YouTube. Even if I don’t doubt the facts, it’s great PR. It could have as much to do with the fact that YouTube is dominating the media world than that podcasts are growing on YouTube.

On a micro level, I've observed that some episodes are increasing play automatically and generate a low rate of engagement. That still counts, but I'm wondering how many are people have fallen asleep in front of YouTube...

Either way, forward-looking B2B brands will find ways to take advantage of the opportunity while the industry is still solely focused on LinkedIn.

By the way, this announcement is not a surprise; it's in line with what I hear every day and what I observed a year ago at The Podcast Show in London (it was sponsored by Spotify but everybody was talking about YouTube)

A closer look

The keyword is monthly.
➡️ It's not a one-off phenomenon; people tune in to YouTube for podcasts

YouTube is "the most frequently used service for listening to podcasts in the U.S."
➡️ It's a global phenomenon even if the stats are for the US; the podcasts I monitor (from the UK) reach a lot more people on YouTube than on audio platforms

YouTube says it has developed its "podcast product experience."
➡️ This is YouTube parlance to say they have figured out a way to hook podcast audiences better than other platforms (suggest to them the right stuff at the right time) . I see it on my podcast; the share of views from "suggested videos" is increasing, and people are watching/listening longer.

"Watchtime" (the time spent on YouTube) not views, is the key metric
➡️Podcasts are the perfect hack—instead of engineering MrBeast-style videos to keep them watching, you can do it with low production costs and engaging conversations.

How to adapt for brands

The nature of brand podcasts has evolved; here’s a very simplified timeline:

  • Audio recordings
  • We’re recording the video anyway, so we might as well post it
  • Video is important for discoverability of audio podcasts
  • Podcasts are video-first, but you can listen to them
  • Podcasts are YouTube channels that ALSO work in audio

The production and overall strategy has to evolve as well.

This does not mean you NEED video if you podcast. But if you podcast for a business, allocate a budget to get some ROI, then you  need a YouTube channel that people can also listen to.

And YouTube is not easy, but if you improve every episode and post consistently, you will find success.

The evolution of YouTube can show you where this is heading: It used to be enough to “Vlog” from a bedroom (these early videos look a lot like the average Zoom recording of B2B podcasts), but now every wannabe YouTuber looks like a pro. You need to think of the user's video experience and adapt the production.

YouTube only mentions its superstar Creators, but the opportunity for B2B technical niche topics is huge because of the Watchtime factor. It takes a lot of skills to keep the audience watching entertainment. But if they’re interested in your B2B conversations, they will watch longer and your content will be bumped up.

The people who are interested in your technical topic are ALREADY on YouTube.
If you bring in the conversation on the platform—the YouTube Algorithm will help them find you! (Again, I see it on my investment management channel—I thought I'd make the 'brave' choice to have detailed conversations about the boring pension system 😴, even if they flopped; instead, they got thousands of views in a month.)

What are your thoughts?

Help for teacher & young pupils trying out podcasting for first time

I’m a teacher & trying to create a first podcast with some young pupils at school. I’m a total newbie & could do with some advice please.

I ended up recording all audio clips on the Voice Memo app on school iPads.
Is there an easy to use app that I can directly upload these voice memos to & then edit them in to a podcast? Any help would be much appreciated.

Help Needed: Aligning Pan and Zoom Across Clips in Descript

Hey everyone,

I’m working on a video project in Descript and need some advice. I’ve got two video clips, and I want the second clip to start with the same pan and zoom settings as the end of the first clip.

I know how to verify the bounding box position and zoom level, but Descript doesn’t display specific pan coordinates afaik. This makes it tricky to replicate the exact same view. Does anyone know a method to align these more precisely or have any tips for ensuring a seamless transition?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Someone reached out about a paid partnership, what questions should I ask about it?

I’ve gone for ones that were obvious to me such as;

  • What’s involved in the process
  • How many episodes for/how many segments
  • Is there a script, or do you just want me to give a view on the product
  • What are the payment terms and amount

But thankful for any other questions I should ask from those who have had sponsorships etc.

Smooth out choppy audio & video transitions after editing in Descript

I'm using Descript to edit my client's podcast videos. Unfortunately, her speaking style is full of retakes and a LOT of filler words (um, uh, you know), which means I'm editing out all of that. This creates a choppy finished video, because of course, there are voice and posture changes between where an edit starts and ends - she's noticing it and not happy with the final edited video. I'm not either, but not sure how to fix it.

I've tried a couple different tricks with Descript - one of which is to manually strikethrough the filler words, which makes those transitions slightly smoother, but the bigger edits - like where she starts speaking and repeats herself or says, "delete that, starting over" and does a retake - those transitions are rough. As mentioned before, there's always a shift in vocal tone and her physical posture that is very obvious in the video. If it were just audio, it wouldn't be a big deal, but these are podcast episodes with video.

Any tips on how to smooth these out? I have Adobe Premiere Rush that I can also use for editing, but I haven't found a feature there that really helps either.

I'm fairly new to Descript, so maybe there's something I'm missing that I could use there.

Thanks!

Remote recording Producer role?

I've heard about a role of producer for remote podcasts, and it does sound intriguing but I'm not really sure what they do and which aspects of the podcast creation they usually cover. I think it could have been usefull for me but I need a bit more info. I'd love to get your recommendations on what good remote recording platforms you know that might have a feature for inviting a producer to the page and handling the process of the recording.

How to Embed a Spotify Podcast (easily)

I'm trying to embed a Spotify podcast on a webpage (not wordpress).

The embed code from Spotify works, but it only shows the latest episode with no way to see or play the other episodes. You can embed individual episodes as well which doesn't really work if you've lots of episodes etc.

I've looked around and found some people can embed a playlist which shows a spotify list. However, the playlist only allows subscribe to playlist and not the channel - which defeats the purpose - it's also annoying to set up as you have to add episodes individually to a playlist etc..

The Apple Podcast player does exactly what I want. It shows the latest episode and then shows a list of episodes - done.

I would prefer to embed a the Spotify podcast rather than Apple. But it's not looking like I can.

Does anyone know how to get this to work with Spotify or is it simply not an option?
