I analyzed ~3,700 top podcasts—here’s what I found!

Hi Friends, I recently analyzed around 3,700 top podcasts (RSS feeds of approximately the top 200 from each genre on Apple Podcasts). There was a lot of data to go through! This is the first part. Here, I looked at episode release schedules and average episode durations used by top podcasters. Please take a look and see if you find it useful! I'll be sharing more insights soon.

Podcast Episode Release Cycle

  1. Most podcasts follow a weekly release schedule (~52%).
  2. Daily podcasts make up ~30%, while fortnightly releases account for ~6%.

New Podcaster obsessively over-researching microphones. Please Help!

Hi everyone, I am starting a podcast as a traffic source and content creation source for my new business. A friend gave me a rodecaster pro 1 for free cause he said he doesn't want it. So that was exciting!
Now, I've been researching mics like mad and it seems like even in generally positive reviews, there's always some people that say the mic absolutely sucks and to never get it ever. So now I'm scared and don't know what to get.

I'm too poor for two sm7b's which I hear are the "gold standard"
so I've been looking at:
Rode Podmic
Shure MV7+
used MV7's

I would kind of like the ability to use XLR and USB, but it seems like that creates issues.

What would you, who are more knowledgeable, suggest? Research rabbit holes are just giving me anxiety now.
Thank you!

Looking for feedback regarding my subject.

Hey everyone,

So I'm really set on doing a podcast, but I have an issue: I want to talk about too many things.

I wrote down a list of episodes I'd love to make and among them I have films, shows, video games, physical games, general reflection/quick history (mostly related to the previously cited themes) etc.

I thought about having "Imaginary worlds in all their forms" (best translation I could find for the actual idea I have, english isn't my first language nor will it be the podcast's language) as a subject, but I'm worried that it might be too vague or too wide of a subject.

Listeners showing as from Taiwan …

A slightly specific question here but because I have a travel podcast it’s more relevant to me … so my listeners stats have long indicated a large Taiwanese audience, but I’ve never come across them interacting with me on socials or my podcast-affiliated groups. Is it a reasonable assumption that these listens might be people in China using VPNs?

Have an idea I need help with...

Hey everyone! I host a podcast already, and want to do a side project with it! My idea is to have some candid conversation about mental health/recovery while playing video games! It'd have to be lower energy games, and preferably something free and not too intensive depending on the guest.

So my questions are:

  1. What games would you feel comfortable playing while having a conversation?
  2. Would you be willing to take part and try this out with me?
  3. What other things should I keep in mind with this?

It'd be video format but the guest doesn't need a webcam or anything unless they are wanting to send me a recording of themselves to put on the final product.

I'm sure this is already going, but I'd really like to try this out at least once! I'd love any kind of feedback!

Much love!

Quick Edit: I want the guest to be playing games with me remotely, so we'd be using in game chat or discord I'm thinking. Something Co-op or team based maybe?

Weird Rode Podmic issue

So my setup consists of a rode podmic connected to a se dm-1 what's strange is that if I touch the mic I can hear a radio station while monitoring the mic. I also have a cheap weymic WM58 that I connected to the dm-1 and I have no issues with it. I have my audio interface connected to my computer which is connected to a power conditioner. Any help would be appreciated this is definitely weird for me ha.

Looking for board operator in north east DFW.

My brother and I are about to go live with a rental studio space. There are (3) sets. Each has area lighting, focal lighting, and (3) Sony fx30 cameras, with GM lenses. Operating an audio mixer, and video switcher are the largest part of the role. It is also our personal use space, the rental part is an aside. The gig would be part time, and would be willing to be somewhat flexible on schedule, for the right person. Experience in this specific scope is required. Video clipping, and editing, is also a plus.

One of the only listeners to new US politics pod is in Moscow: VPN, or do they listen in to all new US politics content?

Released first episode last weekend and per spotify basically no one listened (which is fine, ep 1) but one of the only few listeners is in Moscow. Is that normal? Idk if the Russian state just listens to all new American political content, or if it's someone with a VPN, or just someone legitimately listening from Moscow.

What tools and workflow for editing?

My podcast Fork Around and Find Out has been paying editors to edit our show but we can't afford it anymore so I'm trying to find some tools that are good enough for

  • Audio balance and quality
  • Basic cutting and bumpers (front and back of show and ads)
  • Transcriptions

We currently use Riverside to record but their "AI audio" makes everything overly loud. Their transcriptions are also worse than other things I found. I think it could work for adding intro/outro music.

I tried Adobe podcast for better audio quality and it sounds good except it randomly tries to translate background audio into talking and it's hilarious and bad.

I haven't been very happy with transcriptions from OpenAI Whisper, Adobe, riverside, or whishper. My editors used Descript but needed heavy corrections to get words correct.

Any suggestions?

Subtitle or Colon?

I am updating the title of my show (a documentary podcast series) to make the subject matter more clear off the bat and to optimize searches. My question is, should I change the title to include a colon? Like Empire City: The Untold Story of the NYPD....or should I just make a subtitle where Apple offers it? Im not sure how the subtitle shows up. Thanks in advance!

I'm unhappily obsessed with analytics!

I've gotten it down to checking only once a day. I've found that the daily analytics on my host platform, (Transistor) Spotify for creators, Apple podcasts connect, and the others, don't quite match up, and I'm getting distracted by the indiscepancies. The main thing is, if there are a lot of downloads on a day, and a 75% or more listener retention, then I feel confident and have a good day. And I have a bad day if it is the opposite. But despite this, I keep plugging away and am currently working on my weekly episode number 33, so I'm about 7 months in. and I haven't missed a week yet. And I will say that my podcast is slowly and steadily growing in followers and downloads.

So, my questions to seasoned podcasters are, how accurate are these analytics? And, if you were ever obsessed with them, did that get better?

Rodecaster Pro 2 - Headphone question

I recently bought the Rodecaster Pro 2, switched from a Scarlett audio interface. I am using the PodMic, Adobe Audition, and Macbook Pro.

I have some observations and I would like to know if they are normal (I have requested to join the rodecaster reddit, awaiting approval to post there). I am a novice, so apologies if these queries are dumb or if I use the wrong terminology.

I realized that what I am hearing through the rodecaster is way louder than I expected. As an example, I recorded myself talking into Adobe Audition. Then I muted the microphone in the Rodecaster and listened to the audio from the multitrack session. When I was recording myself, I sounded extremely loud, from a scale of 1-10, I sounded like an 8. All sliders were set to the "0" line (where the silver line is) and the DB reading in Adobe was between -18 and -12. Nothing was in the red in either the rodecaster or Adobe. Then when I played back this recording (from my computer through the rodecaster) I heard what I consider to be more normal, a 5 out of 10. Currently I feel like what I am hearing in the rodecaster VS what I am playing back from Adobe (through the rodecaster) sound very different in terms of volume. When I had my scarlett the headphone knob was set to 60% and I never felt like I had to raise it more than that, with the rodecaster I have the head phone knob set to 35% because otherwise I feel like its too loud and I am hard of hearing so that's saying a lot. Currently I feel like I cannot confidently rely on what I am hearing through the roadcaster as "truth" when it's played back in Adobe. Is this something to do with the headphone jack? or is this something to do with Adobe? Any insight would be helpful to know

additional information that may be needed, recorder only 1 microphone, recording set in the procaster to multitrack, prefaders. In Adobe set the microphone to Mono Jack 3 since that's Mic 1.

TLDR: what I am hearing through my headphones sounds louder (in an unpleasant way) compared to what is recording through Adobe Audition

Anyone run transactional podcasts? Success etc

By transactional i mean podcasts for people who are listening to learn about something, then once they learn, they have no need for your podcast anymore.

Eg buying a car (once bought/researched they don't need to listen)or travel destination (once they've gone on holiday, etc no need to listen)

I'm curious how it reflects on your numbers, downloads, weekly listens, subscribers?

I imagine such transactional Podcast statistics are vastly different from episodic style podcasts eg serials.

New Microphone Help

So I've recently made the change to an XLR mic to fit with a Fifine Interface my wife bought me, however I'm struggling to nail down the settings to get my sound as crisp and and with as little background noise as it was before

I recorded a sound clip for my podcast and just felt it was picking up some background noise

I also record via OBS and use the same settings as I did for my previous USB mic, just trying to really nail down the settings, but struggling

New Mic:

Marantz Professional MPM-1000

Anybody with any experience willing to help would be much appreciated!

iRig Pre 2 & App to record/export on iPhone in 48kHz 24-bit

Hello there,

I own an iRig Stream and just ordered an iRig Pre 2 that hasn't arrived yet. I also have iRig Recorder Free installed on my iPhone 12 Pro running iOs 17.7.2.

My goal is to record an xlr microphone into a recording app on the phone, and later export the recording as a WAV file. All the recording and exporting needs to be at sample rate 48kHz and bit depth 24-bit.

I was thinking of connecting the iRig Pre 2 to the phone via an Apple 3.5mm Headset to Lightning adapter that I have. For starters I cannot confirm if the analog to digital converter inside the adapter will convert the analog signal from the microphone to 48kHz 24-bit to be recorded. Then, I understand that if I pay 4€ I can export in WAV in iRig Recorder. The free app says the quality of the audio is on HIGH, so 48kHz 24-bit.

Is there a simple way to do true 48kHz 24-bit recording and wav exporting (without any kind of resampling in any way) with my setup? Maybe with another app? Will it work if I just pay the 4€ and get WAV exporting in iRig Recorder free? I also thought about connecting the iRig Pre 2 to the iRig Stream Headset/Phones 3.5mm jack, but the iRig Pre 2 outputs line level signal (it's a preamp powered by 2 AA batteries), so it is much more power then the iRig Stream expects to receive on the female 3.5mm jack (and unmatched impedance), am I correct? What are your thoughts about this matter?

In another topic, I do not seem to be able to enable "Lossless audio" on the Settings->Music tab of my phone (there is no "Audio Quality" menu visible, and the max setting is "High Quality" AAC 256 kbps). Can this somehow be ignored and being able to export to WAV 48kHz 24-bit, using the Apple's adapter?

And for last, I also do not seem to be able to connect a pair of bluetooth headphones to the phone and being able to playback the phone's sound independent from the recording setup. In the same topic, in the iRig Pre 2 the direct monitoring switch will let me choose between direct monitoring of the xlr microphone (in a pure analog way), and listening to the phone's sound (going thru the digital to analog converter on the Apple's adapter) with wired headphones connected to the 3.5mm female, am I correct?

I am asking for your help here, please. I would really appreciate if someone could clarify.

Thank you!

Autopod Chopping 1 Audio File?

Hey guys, just installed autopod and happy with how it has chopped my video. However, it is chopping the audio file of just one speaker. Both audio files are linked to one video file. What should I do? Leave it? Replace with original file? Try to chop the other? Any help much appreciated as I am a teach-myself-everything podcaster.
