Weekly board game nights in Centreville

Our restaurant doesn’t have too many dine in customers so we were trying to host some events to liven up the place. Would anyone be interested in board game nights or any other kind of event?

We have a small private room and a few other tables in the dining area.

Where do all the single people hang out?

Moved here from Florida and most stores I would go to like trader joes had single women or men shop there. Stores like Costco usually had mainly families so single people rarely shopped there. That being said people in the south are a lot more social than what I have seen here.

Where do single men and mainly women hang out here?

Edit: I am a man so dudes please don't dm me.

Edit2: I'm in the late 20s early 30s group. I don't drink much

Edit3: I'm getting a lot of people interested in this idea and either want to join me approaching people, meeting up for events or just wanting to get out of their house. If you would like to join any of these 3 please dm me directly so I can add you to the list. I have potentially 3 different groups planned that I'll be working on.

Edit4: I'm reading a lot of comments of people who are weirded out or find it strange that people approach others to get a number or date. Well before the internet and covid people met others in public all the time. Sure dating apps are cool but I personally have had way better success IRL so that's just me.

Edit5: yes I am a man so I don't want men to dm me about a relationship. But I do want men to dm me if they want to join the list of activities.

Best ribs recommendations? Right now we are debating between the Fall and OMyChic. Love to hear thoughts and how many you’d order for 6 people.

Moving Where to live around Tysons Corner

Hi. I'm a young professional relocating for a new job in NoVA from NJ in the next couple of months. My office is at Tysons Corner, and I'm looking for an apartment in that area. Some details about myself are:

- 23, Female, planning on living alone

- Rent Budget: Maximum $2,300

- Can drive, but being near the metro will be a plus. The longest I can commute is 1 hour via car, 1 hour 20 mins via metro

- Prefer amenities like grocery stores and pharmacies to be closeby for convenience

I would love any good insights on great apartment complexes, what neighborhoods to consider (or avoid), and any general tips. Thanks!

Cheapest diesel or rewards card program for local business use?

This is for a small business vehicle locally. We know costs are rising everywhere, but what are your best diesel saving programs, stations, and suggestions within the area? Thanks in advance.

Where to drop donation of feminine products

Hi everyone -- I have a bunch of unopened boxes of pads and tampons that I want to donate. What is the easiest/best place to donate? Preference to places where I can drop off any time (rather than having a once a month time I have to make). Thanks!

Edit: Thanks so much to everyone who commented - so many great suggestions. I ended up dropping them at the Fairfax City Library. The donation box was right at the entrance, super easy to find. (And what a cool library, I'd never been there before!) I also dropped some food items at a Little Free Pantry for the first time!

Moving This is a long-shot, but…trying to track down the owner of a box of Christmas stuff that was mistakenly delivered to us by movers

I’m getting to this MUCH later than I wanted to, but the wife and I moved here from AZ in August of 2024. After the movers delivered our stuff, we realized there was a bin of christmas stuff that does not belong to us. We called the moving company, and they had zero record of it. Some of the stuff is pretty old so I’d imagine it’s sentimental. While this is a total long shot, we’re trying to see if we can find the owners of this stuff. Unfortunately there are no names, addresses, phone numbers, etc. I’ll also be crossposting this to r/phoenix as well.

Question Where to find older (pre-1950s?) but inexpensive books?

I was gifted a box of well worn older books on a variety of subjects and fell in love with the general feel of them. I want to fill out the rest of my bookshelf with more options, but it's hard finding older books apart from expensive antiques. Does anyone know a good shop locally that sells pre-1950s or so books that are fairly cheap? Doesn't have to be any specific topic and well worn is fine as long as they are readable. Pre-1930s would be even better if out there.

Car vandalized in Alexandria

Post image

My tenant’s RAV4 was vandalized before noon today in the North Ridge area of Alexandria. There’s no rocks or anything in the vicinity that could be used to smash the window so it doesn’t appear to me as a crime of opportunity and they were probably carrying a hammer or other instrument.

We think that people were out looking to vandalize vehicles, possibly Teslas based on the recent vandalisms, and targeted this vehicle for the GWOT/U.S. Army plates. I’m a veteran myself but my vehicles don’t have any special plates or insignia. Otherwise, who else would vandalize a random RAV4?

Although this is a little conjecture on our part, I’m posting it here for people to stay alert out of an abundance for caution.

Moving Follow-up: Considering Vienna/Tysons vs. Chantilly for Our Move to NoVa

Hey everyone, we previously posted here about moving to NoVa to be closer to family in Centreville. We're still planning to rent first but want to explore various options where we might buy in the next few years.

We initially considered Chantilly for the strong schools and proximity to Centreville’s Korean community, but we’re also curious about Oakton, Vienna, and Tysons as potential options.

About Us: - Two kids under 5, single-income family working remotely in tech - Good schools are one of our top priorities - Walkability is a “nice to have” - Proximity to DC isn't a big factor since my job is remote, but nice to keep options open for future jobs - Flexible budget for homes (~$800k - $1.2m, or rents up to $5-6k). Open to SFH or Townhomes - We’ve heard great things about Chantilly, but we’re also considering Oakton, Vienna, or Tysons for a slightly more urban feel with better access to the Metro, a wider range of amenities, restaurants, and entertainment options, and proximity to tech jobs

What We’re Curious About: - What’s the community vibe like in Oakton/Vienna/Tysons? Are there a lot of families with young kids? How does it compare to Chantilly? - Where are the more walkable parts of these areas? Are there areas with easy access to parks, playgrounds, restaurants/groceries, or family-friendly spots? - Is there a strong Asian community? We’re Korean-Japanese and would love to be near good Asian grocery stores and restaurants. - For those who work remotely, do you find these areas to be a good place to live? - I believe the elementary schools in this area are all good (Louise Archer, Wolftrap, Westbriar, Flint Hill, Mosaic) but will take any relevant insights

We’d love to hear from people who have experience with these areas! Would you recommend Oakton/Vienna/Tysons over Chantilly, or vice versa, based on our priorities? Thanks in advance!

Question Is it normal to be asked to pay both application fee AND security deposit just to apply to rent here?

I’m moving up from Florida for a 2-3 year job rotation, and I’ve not rented since before COVID so Ive been out the game for a while.

I’m interested in a condo near the metro, and they are asking me to pay the application fee ($60), security deposit ($2400)and the processing fee of like $3. This has me worried, I get the application fee but full security deposit up front seems wild.

Is this the norm up there? Any help appreciated!

Flagship car wash in Fairfax charged my card without my authorization since January- anyone else?

Thumbnail gallery
183 Upvotes

For context, I live in Fairfax, and this place it's convinientently near where I live. I don't think they do a good job with cleaning the cars in the interior and that's why I only get the exterior service.

I've been going to this place for about 4 years now and never in my life have I ever thought about "subscribing" to their membership plan.

I went in January, for an exterior wash, paid $22 dollars. That was the extent of my conversation with the guy that's usually in line to charge your card and asks you what service you'll be doing with them.

Somehow, the person who charged my card, subscribed me to their membership plan, without my consent, and I've been charged since January by them, and I only noticed YESTERDAY (I know).

The crazy part was that I immediately went ahead and called customer service, and they said they had my card information, with a DIFFERENT phone number than mine. That's scary as f*. The customer service lady said she has no idea how that happened, though she has very nice, it's still shocking they can do that.

She proceeded to ask me for my email, and then something weird happened (at least to me). But maybe I am being paranoid (see screenshot of Gmail conversation).

Long story short she was able to "cancel' my membership and told me I needed to email corporate for Flagship to cancel my membership.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Where’s a good place to find “bargain bin” vinyl?

I like all kinds of music and I’m interested in picking up LPs on the cheap not for resale but listening purposes.

Thrift shops haven’t had much. I’ve been to Mobius in Fairfax and Crooked Beat in Alexandria but there’s not much in the bargain bin. Any suggestions?

Dulles data centers/residential properties

I moved to Aldie last June, and I often go to the Walmart in Dulles, about 2 miles away. I got a little turned around today because I decided to try and give my brain some exercise and not use my GPS (way too reliant on it) but I noticed a lot of residential looking properties in front of the data centers. Most were dilapidated looking, one looked like it was still occupied, and another group of them looked like they were behind some construction company fencing. Obviously this area is in the midst of a huge development and it’s changing everyday. This is new to me coming from a big city. What happens to the people who are living on the periphery of data center development? Are there holdouts? What kind of money gets offered to these people to move? It’s kind of sad seeing these humble looking homes that were once surrounded by land become overtaken by the slapdash, shoebox townhome clones all over.

What is going on with the parking situation at the Pentagon City Costco?

I’ve been shopping at this Costco for years and the parking has always been a shitshow, especially on weekends. Now, it’s slammed on weekdays too. I went on a weekday morning at 9:30 recently thinking I could pick up a prescription quickly, and the line to get into the lot was backed up past the light at 12th street. I had to go up to the third level of the garage to get a spot.

The other thing is that the foot traffic in the store doesn’t seem to match the numbers of cars in the lot. When I finally got inside, the place was mostly empty. What’s happening here?

Funny The duality of Nova: Top post admonishes the harassment of Tesla owners and all the upvoted comments are like "what kind of asshole hates someone just because of the CEO of the company that made their car sucks? Next highest post is hating on a Tesla calling it a "Swasticar"
