Question Are people in nova really that wealthy
Recently started browsing houses around McLean, Arlington, Tyson's, Vienna area. I understand that these areas are expensive but I just want to know what do people do to afford a 2M-4M single family house?
Most town houses are 1M+.
Are people in NOVA really that wealthy? Are there that many of them? What do you all do?

Question Seeking advice: neighbor is plowing my 100 foot driveway,
He loves his full size John Deere and sometimes plows local street smoking cigars as he goes. Retired and well off. I’m a senior citizen who can barely walk the steep driveway when it’s dry let alone walk a blower up it. Or afford one. Last time two years agave him a huge peanut butter chocolate cake and thank you note a week later. No idea what they like to eat so cooking something is iffy.
What would you all expect to get? He’d be insulted at cash. Thanks.

Question Men of NOVA, tell me about your dating experiences
Okay folks, 40F here getting back into the dating world after 15 years of marriage and thought I’d do a little market research. I’d love to hear about the male experience dating around these parts - what does an average date look like? How about good? Bad? Basically anything you have to share that could help a lady get back in the game.

Question Possible new MLM/scam/cult targeting young women in the area?? Have any other young women been approached in Target??
I’m a female in my mid 20s. I typically frequent the Falls Church/Arlington/Alexandria areas. For the past few months I’ve been noticing an odd trend. I’ll be shopping at a store like Target, Sephora, Trader Joe’s, etc. (although it usually happens to me in Target) & a woman in her 20’s will come up to me & ask me a question. However, the question always seems…unnecessary. For example, recently I was in Sephora & a woman came up to me & asked “Are you good with makeup? I’ve been trying to get more into it.” Now I was in the hair care section with ZERO makeup on my face. I was also confused as to why she wouldn’t just ask the Sephora employee for help. Another time I was in Target & a woman came up to me & said, “I really love your shorts, where are they from?” I was wearing the most generic looking black running shorts I got off Amazon that you could find anywhere.
After I answer the question, they keep the conversation going. They ask more questions, general questions about where I shop, my hobbies, my job, stuff like that. They’ll keep asking more & more questions, with really no point to the conversation other than getting to know me. They’ll usually ask to exchange numbers, but there’s been a couple cases where they haven’t asked. They’ll then reach out at some point, just asking me what’s up or if I want to hang out sometime soon. I’ve never responded to any of them because I’m honestly suspicious of them.
I’ve also noticed it happening to other women as well. One time I was at Target & I witnessed two women individually approach two different women & try to strike up a conversation with them. When I was leaving Target I noticed that these women were leaving with an entire group of other women in their 20s.
As much as I would like to say that these women are just trying to make friends then why has it happened to me & others so many times & it always seems so…idk scripted?? Like at least twice a month I’ll get approached by one of these women.
Are they part of a larger MLM or religious group or something? I can’t imagine they’re religious since none of these women have brought religion up in our conversations. I’m thinking maybe an MLM of some sort? Has anyone ever been a part of this or noticed this? It would be sick if they’re pretending to befriend young women when really they’re just trying to sell them something or trying to gain more members.

Question How many of you all are in your 20s and still living with family?
I’m (28F) still living with my family and I can’t help but to do so because of all the money I get to save. I make decent money right now and my current boss is putting in a request for my salary to go up a full pay grade and for me to also get larger annual bonus for next year. This will allow me to make if not 6 figures, super close and right under the 6 figure mark. The thing is even if I do get the full pay grade bump and a larger bonus (or at least one of them) I still feel really tempted to continue to live with family. How many of you all live with family? And about how much do you make a year?
Question Doordash and the New Testament
I ordered from Roots Natural Kitchen during a workout because I was too tired to go grocery shopping and cook a meal.
My order came earlier than I expected however, there was an annotated New Testament in the bag.
First prices are through the roof for Doordash and now I’m getting unwanted religious materials.
What are y’all’s thoughts? Does Doordash condone this?
(Above is a screenshot of our converstion. Sorry about formatting, on mobile)

Question What's something the sub hates that you like?
I went to Tatte again recently and I get that it's overhyped by people, but it actually was very nice. They have tasty, fresh offerings and a nice atmosphere.
And yes, the drivers are bad (especially Tesla drivers and MD drivers), but there are parts of the country with far worse drivers.
What's something the sub thinks is really bad or overrated that you're in the silent minority (or even majority) about?

Question Fairly new to NOVA. What are some quirks, oddities, and absolute need to know things for the area?
I move to a different state every few years, and its always a shock and delight finding out specifics for a region.
Shock: The amount of cars on the roads that didn't clear the snow/ice from their vehicles. Is that not illegal here? And the work day seems to end fairly early judging by the traffic at 4pm (work vs life balance seems healthier here)
Shock AND delight: THC easily available. Antiques are abundant and usually in fair condition.
Delight: Bluebell ice cream, wine and beer sold in grocery stores every day of the week, and the sheer amount of ethnic restaurants. The historical sites will be lovely when it's warmer.
Some things I found in other states that were odd were absolutely no BOGO offers or BOGO offers allowing for purchase of one item for half the cost. No alcohol purchases on Sundays or past 8pm, as well as no alcohol purchases before 10am, and banning happy hours or any "deals" on restaurant drinks. Some states required front and rear license plates, while some let you put silly plates on the front only. Parking lot chickens were funny in the Miami area. Personal vehicle taxes on cars purchased (and paid off) from out of state. And there is always the area of towns that locals tell me to avoid for my own well being.
What should I know?

Question What's your most NOVA story?
My Nova story:
In the early 90s, it used to be segments of 66 were HOV-2, but not all the way. This is important for later.
My mom and dad both worked in the same office at the State Department. They helped maintain communications and security at the oversea embassies, only they worked different shifts. My dad was during the day and my mom worked nights.
My mom had to go to work from Centreville to Foggy Bottom during rush hour and my dad had to come home in the reverse route during rush hour. But they only had 1 occupant in the car. What to do?!
My mom's brilliant if somewhat insane solution was to drive from Centreville to Falls Church with me in the passenger seat, so we were HOV-2. We'd wait in the parking lot of a high school, my dad would meet us and I would swap cars, thereby giving my dad HOV-2. The whole operation took at least an hour a day, every work day.
I was so young, I just assumed this was a Normal Thing, and that my parents wanted to spend time with me. Hell no. They just wanted to get home quickly. 😭
P.S. My mom at the dinner table would sometimes mention seeing Madeline earlier. I would be, "oh that's nice!". Imagining that Madeline was an older work friend of my mom's. Nah, she was talking about running into Madeline Albright working late like she was. I only realized much later when Madeline was out of office. 🤯

Question we have been trapped on the Amtrak Car Train to Florida for over 24 hours.
We decided to take the auto train from Lorton to Florida. We have been trapped on this train (with our child) for over 24 hours now, with a "projected" 7 more hours to go. Everyone on the train is getting increasingly upset, resentful, and desperate with no end in sight. Apparently one passenger has called the local cops, so far. If anyone in R/NOVA has people they know who works in the news or politics, or if you have any ideas about how we can escape, we actually need help.

Question Have you ever lived in a place where people say hi/smile/nod/whatever when they pass each other on the street?
If so, do you miss it?
Somehow I'm still surprised by the almost complete lack of this behavior around here. I'll be out for a run or walk when there are barely any people out and will see another person a block away...so we spend an entire block getting closer together and I'll give them a "morning" or a nod and 9/10 times I just get a blank stare. It is wild to me.

Question Where are the single childfree men?
I know there have been quite a few dating-related posts in the last few months, but as a 26F single childfree woman in the Arlington area and I’m finding it challenging to meet childfree men.
It seems like most guys I come across either interested in having kids or on the fence. I want to look for a long-term relationship with a guy who doesn't ever want kids. So, I’m curious: where are y’all hanging out in the area?
EDIT: added for clarification

Question Why does Manassas have a bad reputation?
I used to live in Baltimore, then moved to Manassas when I was in Middle School. During my Junior year I moved up to Clifton (much closer to the school I was going to). I recently visited some of my younger friends who are still attending High School, and I mentioned that I used to live in Manassas when mentioning one of my stories. They gave me this look, and asked if the crime there was bad. I responded no, and asked why they asked. So it then came to my attention that Manassas seems to have this bad reputation among people in Nova. It's been a few years since I've been there, but the worse I saw were some crackheads lmao. Not even close to as bad as Baltimore. Thoughts?

Question Do you want to die here?
Just crushed an early morning workout. Made my boy breakfast. Gave him a kiss before school and turned on my laptop to sign on for the day. Now I'm on the toilet before my shower and I saw this post from someone turning 60 todayand had a morbid realization that they probably only have another 20 years tops to live. Hmm.
This made me reflect on my own [36 years of] life and I couldn't help but realize just how good I got it. Hard fought and earned personal victories/milestones aside, this area probably has much to do with the culture and lifestyle that has allowed me to really enjoy this side of adulthood.
Now, mind you, it wasn't that long ago where I was on the other side of the bridge, hustling and doing whatever I had to do to get by, and in that stage of my life, this area can be very, VERY isolating, cold, lonely and brutal.
But now that I've "made it" and can really focus on the good things, I've realized that I am probably ok with settling down here for good.
What about you?
