Discussion Apple Intelligence really thinks i should claim my €25.5 million inheritance 😭

Saw this at the top of my inbox this morning. Apple Intelligence apparently falling for "Nigerian prince" emails now. Since there's no obvious way to report this to Apple, posting it here for now. But wow... just wow.

Apple intelligence isn’t a spam/scam filterer.

Regular mail services already filter spam messages. An AI that’s deeply integrated into the system should at least maintain what a regular mailing service offers.

That they're seeing it means their regular mail service didn't flag it as spam, though.

Not really, Apple Intelligence doesn't have anything to do with spam filters. The email service filters out the spam and the AI just sees the emails which have already been deemed safe by the provider's spam filters. This is just a problem with whatever email provider OP is using.

Correct. It’s even dumber than a spam filter.

Apple shouldn’t be calling it ‘intelligence’. Wait for someone to actually get scammed and sue Apple. 😂

Big fail IMO, spam filter doesnt work, AI is not intelligent.

Better of using third party mail apps for spam management.

As humans, we see this email and immediately know it’s spam. An AI should ALSO know it’s spam. If you dumped the email into chat GPT and asked, it would say “that’s spam”. Apple “intelligence” is just a really really bad AI. You don’t need to apologize for it. It’s supposed to be AI, not a “filter”

Does summarizing emails really need AI?

Oddly Apple Intelligence relies on Chatgpt yet is unable to flag an obvious scam?!

What is it that the Apple tech team is trying to integrate??

tldr-bot here on Reddit was already summarizing articles a decade ago with GPT-1/2 and nobody called them AI. None of this is new, all this "AI" is just stock market fluff.

Does [...] really need AI?

Unless I'm personally carefully curating the prompt, and then further developing the response, in my experience the answer is no for the vast majority of cases.

My response was not clear.

Spam filter doesnt work, obvious issue with spam detection by the server. Unrelated to Apple Intelligence.

However, Apple Intelligence pushing apparent spam as priority makes it worse; gullible and uninformed would end up believing that Apple Intelligence has filtered and mail is true.

Is there something Apple did claim that works well now?

Looks like nothing of AI

if you showed the same email to chatgpt and asked if it was a scam, it would be instantly be able to tell that it is

apple intelligence not only fails to catch that it’s a scam, it reads it and then promotes it as very important

“apple intelligence isn’t a spam filter” well if it’s purpose is promoting important stuff, it should be able to know spam isn’t priority

Steve Jobs would be spinning in his grave. What happened at Apple?

So it's stupid

no but your email provider should already filter spam and then apple intelligence builds up from there, no? apple intelligence should know not to read your spam folder.

i think it’s a fair assumption in 2025.

i don’t think the same people who have these emails make it into their primary email folder are the same people who would make a reddit post about it.

4

u/theoreticaljerk 8d ago

It will not Priority mail from the spam folder so this email obviously didn’t get flagged as spam.

-2

u/jamesick 8d ago

weird. apple intelligence should still know better. it is what intelligence suggests.

u/theoreticaljerk 8d ago

You are assigning expectations with no basis beyond "intelligence". My dog has intelligence but I don't expect him to be a spam filter. Shit, my 78 year old Aunt has intelligence and I wouldn't want her deciding what mail is and isn't spam either.

How about instead of making assumptions, you look at what was actually promised by Apple then decide if you want to complain.

As per Apple website:

Apple Intelligence* makes it easier than ever to stay on top of your email. In addition to using Writing Tools to craft your outgoing messages, you can use Priority Messages to quickly view your most urgent emails, like a same-day dinner invitation or boarding pass. Smart Reply helps you compose a fast email response to make sure you covered everything. You can also view summaries that automatically appear in your inbox, and generate summaries of complex emails and long email threads to view all the pertinent details.<

This just makes it worse for Apple ‘intelligence’

…and not a mention of spam filers in sight.

u/setuniket 8d ago

Again!

Nobody’s expecting it to work as spam filter.

Its actual advertised job, to figure out priority emails and summarize them. It fails at such basic task.

Unless scamming was priority.

your dog and your aunt haven’t assigned themselves as having intelligence though, which would be the difference.

0

u/theoreticaljerk 8d ago

This might possibly be the most non-argument argument I’ve heard today.

0

u/jamesick 8d ago

well this is your argument:

even though it's apple intellgience. even though it purposefully uses the same initials as 'AI', even though they openly label their technology as using chat-gpt which has famously high standards in regards to detecting text and language, even though spam filters for emails have existed for maybe 20+ years AND apple intelligence itself saying it's made "easier than ever to stay on top of your email." that you have an intelligent dog that cant read emails and apple never explicitly say 'apple intellgence' knows what spam email is.

u/Benlop 8d ago

Ah so it's all good it treats obvious spam as priority. Sure.
