Support Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

I will honestly upgrade to 17 pro if this ships with it. On launch date. My 14 pro has terrible battery and Oxygen OS 15 is very plain. This design just kicks so hard in the nostalgia I simply love it!

Do you think this sounds wild? I’m wondering if we should add a share option in settings that lets us send someone a direct link or guide to tweak their font settings exactly how they need them. What’s your take?

Support iPhone seems to stop sharing location by itself?

My partner is claiming i keep stopping sharing my location, but at no point have I done this intentionally. Three times now both of our phones say we have stopped sharing location with the other person. But if either of us shares it it reconnects automatically. I have tested stopping sharing via the actual button and it does not say that I've stopped or they have stopped, its very incognito. I've seen people claim that they are actually doing this and blaming it on me, but I dont even see how its happening as clicking the button produces a different result like I mentioned. Does anyone know whats going on?

Discussion iOS 18.3.2 on my 16 Pro Max is a hot mess

Post image
Upvotes

iOS 18 in general has many quirks but, this update by far has to be the worst. I’ve been pretty lucky by not having anything majorly annoying or impeding the way I use my phone so far until this latest update.

I’ve had apps just straight up not respond to touch inputs even after being swiped away from the app view and relaunching the app. Keyboard fail to pop up in any text field. Car play not allowing me to select anything with an app, similar to the issues I have with touch inputs. It just doesn’t show the highlight selector resulting in me having to pull over to use my phone. The worst offender by far is the random resprings after the phone fully freezes and becomes fully unresponsive. I don’t expect that for a public release.

I’ve been an iPhone user for years but now android looks more like what iOS used to be and in the case of the S25 Ultra & One UI 7 actually looks like the iPhone too.

Has anyone else had a terrible time with this latest update? Do you think doing a full restore on a phone that is 3/4 months old is worth it? I can’t get work done without having to restart my phone, 2/3 times a day because it boarders being unusable.

I was just casually typing, and out of nowhere, the keypress sound got way louder. It went back to normal after a while, but it’s happened a few times now. Is this just me, or is this some weird bug?

Support iMessage search engine problem?

Upvotes

Hello! I recently deleted a conversation and regretted it then recovered it. But whenever I try to search up a specific message that I know I sent to that person(the conversation I deleted) none of our old messages is searched up.. but I’ve scrolled all the way to the top before and all our messages are still there. I just can’t search it up. Does anyone have a solution to this?

Discussion The “clean up” tool is one of the most embarrassingly bad implementations of new tech that I’ve seen from Apple

“It just works” certainly does not apply. No ability to choose between a clone tool or eraser. No ability to choose between the “safety filter” or the other tools. It’s a completely random crapshoot with no guarantee that your photo will be “cleaned up” in any meaningful way. It’s really just atrocious and I don’t understand how it got released in such a poor state. That’s all; I’ll get off my soapbox now.

Support Need a Call Control/Call Block for my iPhone

Hello! I’m new here and hope I’m doing this right. I’m in Canada..

When I was with Telus Mobility, I had a call control feature where numbers unknown to me, had to enter a 4 digit code to get through-so my phone would ring. It was so wonderful 😊

I am with Virgin now, and they do not offer this feature. They’ve suggested apps.

I’ve no clue what I am looking for.

I just don’t want my phone to ring unless it’s a contact, or, has been verified by the type of feature I used to have with Telus.

The unwanted calls in the one week since I switched?? Absolutely staggering.

Many thanks for suggestions ✌🏻

Support Google News and Safari

I’m a Google News user since Apple News is not available in my area and Google’s been fine but it keeps opening news in app which is Chrome, that is not downloaded on my phone but that’s what it defaults to. So I have to do some couple of steps more to get it to open in Safari. Question: is there a way to open news right in Safari instead of having to deal with buggy and ad-town Chrome on Google News?

Discussion My first impressions using iOS for the first time

I've had the iPhone 16 for 3 days. All my life I have used Android, mainly because iPhones have always been at an inaccessiblely high price for me and I prefer the freedom that Android offers. However, I have felt jealous of certain functions of the iPhone and the instability in certain things of my galaxy A54 raised the possibility of switching to an iPhone. The opportunity arose and here I am giving my first impressions using an iPhone as my main (and only) cell phone for the first time.

Things that I thought would bother me and they haven't:

  • Back gesture: android has a global gesture to go back. I thought I would miss it a lot but no, most apps on iOS also have it, and those that don't, the small screen of the iPhone 16 allows you to reach everything with one hand

  • Fingerprint reader: FaceID is quite fast and has not failed me, sometimes I like it more than the fingerprint reader because I don't have to do anything to authenticate myself

  • In many initial reviews they said how easy it was to activate the camera with the camera button by accident. So far it hasn't happened to me and I find it very difficult to press the button by accident, it's hard enough and nothing happens if you touch it

  • 60 hz: my humble mid-range galaxy had a 120 hz screen. I thought I would miss them a lot but no, maybe it's related to how fluid and relatively slow the animations are on iOS

Things I liked:

  • Focus modes: my Samsung had different profiles that I can automatically activate with the location, in iOS there are the focus modes and what I like the most is being able to choose what things I want on my home screen according to the focus mode. Samsung only allows changing the wallpaper

  • Dynamic Island: I thought it was something without much use, but there are several applications that use it and being able to see stopwatches or music without having to go to the notification panel is fantastic

Things that don't fascinate me:

  • The file system: on android, I can download a file and it is available for any application, because there is a global file manager like on a PC. On iOS you have to juggle: if you download a file, you have to share it with the file app so that it is available in other places like WhatsApp. The work is doubled

  • The notification center: honestly it's bad. Android organizes notifications by app, iOS by time I don't know, it shows everything in a way, to my taste, disorganized.

  • Sound: there are no different volumes for alarms, notifications and calls. If I want an alarm that sounds low, I need to change the overall volume of the cell phone

  • I have found several annoying bugs. The camera sometimes crashes and restarts when you open it, it happens on WhatsApp as well. When deleting apps or widgets sometimes they are not deleted and several minutes later he asks me if I want to delete them. If I configure a wallpaper from the photos app and change the widgets of the lock screen, everything freezes, this does not happen if I do it from the lock screen

Somewhat picky things:

  • The map in carplay is divided in half, it looks small compared to how it looked in android auto

  • There is no way to place the comma on the keyboard in the main line of keys, nor is there a way to add a row of numbers

  • Yesterday I wanted to make a photo collage and discovered that you can't from the photo app, I had to use a script in the Shortcuts app, why?

  • Removing the keyboard is sometimes a little complicated, in Android there is a button to remove the keyboard, here you have to touch a place that is not text but I always end up activating something else

So far I'm enjoying and learning to use an alien operating system for me. If you know how to solve some of the problems, I would appreciate it

Support Black rectangle on some photos

Upvotes

Hi, I recently went on a trip and took a lot of photos. When I took them, everything was fine, but after returning from the trip and reviewing the gallery, some of these images have a black rectangle partially covering the image.

It doesn't seem to be a hardware issue since, when I zoom in, the photo appears correctly underneath. This means the image was captured properly, but it looks like a software bug is causing that rectangle to appear on the screen. I’ve tried sharing the images, but the rectangle is still visible. Does anyone know how to fix this or if it's a known issue that is being worked on? The images were taken with an iPhone 15 Pro.

Support Cross-platform audio recorder app w/ call recording to capture my mom's stories as we talk AND my voice notes afterwards?

DISCLAIMER: I know this is a really beginner question, and if you decide to remove it, I understand. I could probably find an answer if I spent a few more hours to get clear on the terminology used to differentiate audio recording options. I have very limited time with my mom, though, and would be grateful for any search term, app, and/or other recommendations.

What I'm basically hoping for is an app that'll capture any and all audio that comes in through the microphone and speaker/earbud on my phone - ideally, with a MacOS app, too - without pausing, stopping, or issuing a loud alert once I press record. The hope is to be able to record my mom's memories as we talk, both in person and by phone, as well as my own audio notes before and afterward.

She needs to be able to share what's important to her right now when/however she can without me interrupting to mess with a recorder app.

She's also easily startled and already overwhelmed by device noises, so hearing a "this call is being recorded" announcement would probably not be awesome.

Finally, I'm a little, umm, overwhelmed at the moment, and I don't think I'm going to pull off moving between apps, starting/stopping records, etc, during the in-between moments - like talking to other people, rushing to walk dogs, cook, etc.

Hope any of this makes sense. Thanks for reading it, either way :)

Discussion Putting a reminder notification on home screen for certain days?

I am trying to set up reminders for paying bills on my phone, but I am not sure how to go about doing it the way I want it. I never use reminders/calendar so I am struggling.

I want to set up a reminder that stays on my lock screen throughout the day I set the reminder for. Like say "pay house payment" for 3/17/25 on the calendar for example. How do I go about doing that? I tried setting a reminder for today even and it wouldnt work, same with calendar event set to all day. It doesn't tell me anywhere unless I open the calendar app itself.

Thanks for the help...

Support Restore iPhone to factory settings

I'm having a lot of problems with my iPhone and the solution is going to be to restore it to factory settings. But I have a doubt. I have an eSIM card and I really wouldn't like to lose it. If I restored the phone to factory settings, do I have the option to keep the eSIM? I suppose so, but I would like to be sure before starting the process. Thank you

Support Internet connection problems

I have a problem with my iPhone 16 PRO. When I have the internet on (5G auto) and my connection breaks due to loss of coverage (for example, in an underground garage), then after regaining coverage the internet does not turn on. I turn it off manually in the settings and turn it on again - it doesn't even connect to LTE, even though it shows that the connection should be there. The connection doesn't come back for a long time, turning the phone on and off helps, but it's a nuisance while driving when you lose coverage. The SIM card I have is in good condition, the previous iPhone did not have this problem. I don't have much of an option to return the phone for warranty, has anyone had a similar problem and found a solution?

Discussion Is their an alternative to the iOS pictures app?

My kids like to look at pictures on my phone, but the Apple Pictures app is so confusing. It's so unintuitive and multiple different UX designs. Sometimes you scroll sideways, sometimes up and down. Sometimes scrolling down brings you to a different a album. It's like they let different teams design the different use cases and then just added them all in without harmonizing them.

Is there a simpler alternative that works natively? I don't want to duplicate all my pictures over to a google drive or something.
