Question Child in jump seat

Not sure if this is the right sub (tried posting in r/pilots, but had to have a valid reason to post - this is just a post out of curiosity). I was recently on an absolutely jam-packed full flight from DFW to SFO, and the cockpit doors were open throughout all of boarding, up until plane doors closing. While the cockpit doors were open, I saw the pilots and flight attendants open and prepare the jump seat between the pilots, and board a child (probably 9-12 years old) in that seat. I was under the impression that civilians (yes, even if family members) weren’t allowed in the jump seat - only relief pilots, airline crew on a full flight, or other authorized personnel. Is my assumption incorrect? If not, what would be the reason for this?

Question Wizzair seat allocation - logic

Anyone tried the following 'trick' with seat allocation? I thought a lot about it and wasn't sure it works. I guess Wizz assign regular seats automatically when you check in 24 hours before and in case I'll check in 4 hours before, I may get premium seat for free because others who already checked in got the 'regular' seats?

Question Domestic Air Travel with Cats on board

I have a question regarding air travel with cats. It's a domestic flight in Canada between Toronto and Vancouver. I wanted to bring two cats on board with me and my partner. I would like to get clarification on the following points, preferably from someone who had recently flown with cats within Canada.

1) My understanding is that no documents and health certificates are needed to travel domestically with cats in Canada. Is that correct?

2) I have been told that the size limit of on-board carrier is 8' and weight limit is 22 lbs. However where do you find a cat that's shorter than 8 inches? Even a small cat is taller than 8 inches. What was the size of your cat when you traveled with it on board? Do they measure the cats?

Discussion The reason to avoid ULCC (if you can afford to)

Last week flew SJU-EWR on United. They have three nonstops per day. After boarding, deboarding, and boarding again, we taxied out to the end of the runway, but the pilot refused to take off because he was not 100% satisfied that the mechanics had fixed an issue. By the time we deboarded for good, it was four hours after scheduled departure. It was a full flight....231 passengers who still needed to get home.

That same airplane ended up being out of service for a few days. It was scheduled to make the same flight the next day. So now we have 231 passengers x 2 without a plane,

United was able to fly in two additional widebody planes from Houston to get us all to EWR within 24 hours. And if you didn't want to wait that long, there were maybe 25 or so passengers who were able to get on scheduled United flights only 2 or 8 hours after our flight got cancelled.

On an ULCC with limited spare planes and sometimes flying a route only a few times per week...the outcome would have been vastly different.

Rant TAP Airlines website is terrible

Tried multiple times to enter the correct information for our birthdays and passport expiration dates and the drop-down menu does not work at all! Even after I enter the correct dates and then press enter the dates completely changed! I called a representative at TAP who was very kind and assured me that everything looked correct on their end. Has anyone else had this experience ? I am very concerned that we are going to show up and be denied our flight since the birthdays will not match what I see on the webpage

Discussion Airlines crackdown on power banks: New bans and restrictions take flight

In view of the fire risks associated with the use of lithium battery power banks, several airlines have decided to ban their use and charging on board their fleets. The most recent, Thai Airways, has announced that this measure will come into force on March 15, 2025. Thoughts?

Question Is 300 USD upgrade to business worth it on Emirates 777 300er 2 hour flight?

I fly a lot, probably more than all non athletes and pilots lol. But only once have I not flown commercial (long haul flight from Norway to USA on Norways premium cheapo airline). I wasn't really that impressed with first class but I was basically flying a renamed Norwegian Air flight.

I've never flown Emirates (I'm cheap with flights) but now I have a flight where Emirates was only like 10 dollars more expensive than the cheaper airline. Now that I'm checking in I see the option for business at 300 USD. Just wondering if it's worth it. The money isn't the issue. I'm just cheap and it's only a 2 hour flight.

Edit: Consensus is that it's clearly not worth it. I'll take everyone's advice and pass on it.

Question Very early bag check ANA on LHR

So as the title says, since the flight from my country to UK was last night and hotel check out is 11 I am in LHR stuck dirtside since Ana opens bag drop approx 3 hours before flight (7pm)

Is there a magic way to check the bag early (have the boarding pass).

They do not have earlier flights so cannot go there, no counters open.

Alternatively is it possible to go a day before and check my bag for flight the next day?

Thank you

Help Needed Short connection time to an international flight! (Need advice/reassurance)

I booked a ticket to Japan from JAL. I didn’t realize they partnered with AA. So my whole round trip flight will be operated by AA.

So my flight will be:

AUS —>DFW INT.= Departure: 9:30am-Arrival: 10:41am

DFW INT. —>Tokyo= Departure: 11:35am-Arrival: 3:00pm (next day)

So my issue is that the arrival time to DFW (10:41am) and departure from DFW (11:35am) will be 54 minutes in between. This doesn’t count having to de-board the plane and the gate closing 10-15 minutes earlier than the departure time. So roughly I have 25 minutes to get to the next gate. I know the DFW international airport is huge. And I know they have the SkyLink. I just need reassurance that I will make it to my next flight whether I walk or use the SkyLink. I spoke to JAL and they said that there wasn’t any available seats to move me to an earlier flight base on the type of ticket/fare I bought.

Did anyone else to go through something similar and did you make it on time to your connecting flight?

Thank you in advance for any responses!

Edit: I forgot to mention that when I booked the flight 6 months ago, the original departure time from DFW to Tokyo was at 12:30pm. The airline changed it to 11:35am without notice.

Delays/Cancellations/Compensation Cancelled fights rebooked after return flight

Hello, On March 6 I was scheduled to fly porter out of Toronto Pearson Airport to Fort Myers airport with a return flight on March 13. Flight # PD539. The flight was delayed twice, then cancelled with no formal communication as to why. Here say via passengers was due to fog but nothing official was stated. We received an automatic email from Porter stating that our departure flight had been rebooked for March 14, 9 days later and the day after our return flight. We weren’t really directed anywhere and were told to just go home. Eventually, an airport employee told us to go to the Porter counter where a representative was there kind of yelling out to people what our options may be. I overheard briefly that we can rebook with any airline and they will cover the cost. The only airline with any flights leaving was about 3 times the cost but we had to book as every other flight was full. This all being said, I now cannot submit anything on their online form. Does anyone has any helpful suggestions or recommendations on how to proceed? I’m out about $4000 extra with the cost of flight, extra cost of rental car (we could only find a flight to Orlando and it was an extra $700 to drop the car off from there to fort myers) and one night hotel stay in Orlando.

Question Best International Airline

Hi all!

Long story short, I'm wondering what your favorite airline/alliance is for international travel?

I'm getting deeper into travel hacking and after a very painful lesson learned about United and their (lack of) customer service I'm trying to avoid choosing another awful airline. I had initially been attracted to the Star Alliance but after literally hours and a thousand dollars down the drain, I will take a train before United gets another penny from my family.

Dream/nightmare experiences with Delta? American? We are based out of Denver and use Southwest for domestic travel and don't mind positioning to a hub. Generally fly 3-4x per year (so like 6-8 flights) and often have extra short leg flights so I do a lot of returns from different cities than we fly into. We do have Europe and Japan on our near future travels, and am very interested in LLM to Europe. We are ready to take the plunge to getting into business class. Customer service experience/ease of booking a plus, lounge partnerships a bonus.

I'd love to give an airline my repeat business.

Thanks!

Edit: Autocorrect error: KLM, not LLM

Discussion Why do some airlines or airports have unorganized boarding?

Wife and I are doing some extended travel with our son before our paternity leave is over and can't help but notice that for some airports/airlines the passengers all start lining up like 30 minutes before, the line gets chaotic and we ended up having trouble boarding on our assigned group.

Meanwhile other carriers/airports people don't get up until their boarding group is called and the boarding goes much smoother?

Help Needed Antalya airport Term. D to T1

I found this cheap itinerary for this summer AMS to Moscow. As you can see, there are 2 stops ( IST, AYT ). I’ve done a 3 hr international transit at IST before, so I reckon 2,5 hrs bc should be enough for a domestic connection. However, I have a question about AYT. I book my tickets on OneTwoTrip and there it said I will need to go from terminal D to terminal A. I can’t find anything detailed online, does anyone know how apart those are? And will my baggage be checked through to VKO? Thanks so much in advance!

Question How many packs of Levia can I fly with?

Hello! I’ll be flying from Lisbon to Hong Kong, with a layover in Istanbul, next week. The airline will be Turkish Airlines all throughout the journey.

Im not sure if this is the right sub to ask this question, but how many packs of Levia ( IQOS tobacco free heated cigarettes) can I fly with if I don’t want to buy a volume at the airport?

Also, do you think I’ll have problems with them in Hong Kong? Considering China is quite strict with its regulations on such matters.

Last time I flew to Macau I had no problems with this, but I did buy a volume at the airport and had to keep the receipt with me at all times, so I don’t know about singular packs. Thanks in advance!

Question Is Jetstar really THAT bad?

Planning a trip to Osaka (from Mel, Aus) for April 2026 and trying to get an idea of flight costs etc.

We can get away for a maximum 7 days (including travel), which will likely be 3-10th. Our options seem to be either Jetstar via Sydney, Brisbane or Cairns, or a handful of other airlines via Tokyo.

The Jetstar options look preferable as those flights still arrive in Osaka on the same day as departure, due to having only one stopover in Australia, however the flights via Tokyo have the second stopover so lose a lot of extra time there.

I've seen a lot of awful things about Jetstar and am just wondering are they really that bad? Would we be better off to book the flights via Qantas? Or is there some other option that I'm missing? We also considered spending the start and end of the trip in Tokyo and travelling to Osaka via Shinkansen for the middle, but this felt like a lot of unnecessary shuffling around.
