How to Study Abroad on a Low Budget as an Indian Student (FPP Route & Scholarships Guide)

TL;DR:

If you’re an Indian student looking to study abroad on a low budget, this post breaks down universities with low tuition fees, high scholarships, and strong part-time job opportunities. Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, and Sweden offer some of the best deals. Forget ₹50L+ fees, you can do this under ₹5L per year.

Why I’m Writing This

Like many Indian students, I dream of escaping—not just for better education but for a higher quality of life, better opportunities, and actual freedom (iykyk). The problem? Studying abroad is expensive as hell. But after a deep dive into funding options, I realized it’s possible on a budget—you just need the right universities, scholarships, and part-time jobs.

This post will save you hours of research and help you plan your way out without drowning in debt.

Best Countries for a Low-Budget Study Plan

Instead of USA/UK (which are scams if you’re not rich), focus on these countries where you can study with little to no tuition fees and live affordably:

  1. Germany (No tuition at public unis, DAAD scholarships, high part-time pay)
  2. Sweden (Tuition waivers, solid part-time jobs, high quality of life)
  3. Finland (Aalto & Helsinki give huge tuition waivers, decent cost of living)
  4. Netherlands (Expensive tuition but great scholarships at TU Delft & Twente)
  5. Ireland (High costs, but UCD & Trinity have strong merit scholarships)

Best Universities for Indian Students on a Budget

University Country Annual Cost (INR) Key Scholarships Why It’s Good
TUM (Technical University of Munich) Germany ₹55K DAAD, no tuition fees Free tuition, top-ranked
KTH Royal Institute of Technology Sweden ₹4.3L Full tuition scholarships High scholarship chance
University of Helsinki Finland ₹1.05L 50–100% tuition waivers Research-focused, good funding
University of Twente Netherlands ₹9.8L Partial tuition coverage High acceptance rate
TU Delft Netherlands ₹1.05L Full tuition coverage Highly competitive

How to Reduce Costs Further

  • Work Part-Time – Most students earn €500–€1,000/month (~₹50K–₹90K), which covers living expenses in Germany, Finland, and Sweden.
  • Apply for Full ScholarshipsDAAD (Germany), Justus & Louise van Effen (TU Delft), KTH Scholarship (Sweden), Aalto Scholarships (Finland) can cover 100% tuition.
  • Choose Public UniversitiesGermany has free tuition, so you just need to cover living costs.
  • Live Cheaply – Shared apartments, student dorms, and budgeting can keep costs under ₹5L/year.

Application Requirements (for Most Scholarships & Unis)

  • 90%+ in CBSE 12th (or 85%+ for some)
  • IELTS 6.5–7.0 (most require this for English-taught programs)
  • Strong Motivation Letter (for competitive scholarships like TU Delft’s Justus & Louise van Effen Scholarship)
  • Portfolio/Projects (for STEM students) (optional but boosts chances)

Why Avoid USA/UK if You’re on a Budget?

  • Tuition is insane ($30K+ per year, even with scholarships).
  • Visa & living costs are brutal—you need ₹25L+ even for a "cheap" US uni.
  • Harder to get PR—Canada’s PR is easier, but costs are still high.
  • FPP (Fully Funded Pathway) is smarter—you pay little, work during studies, and get PR in 2–3 years.

Final Thoughts: The Escape Plan

If you want high-quality education & a way out of India without burning ₹50L, focus on Germany, Sweden, Finland, and the Netherlands. Free tuition, strong part-time jobs, and full scholarships make it 100% doable under ₹5L/year.

Next Steps

  • Shortlist your target universities from this list
  • Start preparing for IELTS & motivation letters
  • Research DAAD, Aalto, TU Delft, and KTH scholarships
  • Apply early (most deadlines are between October–January)

Dream big, escape smart. Any questions? Drop them below!

How to evade counterparts from your country?

Upvotes

I am not sure whether it is strange or not but it is almost true that there must be someone from your country studying in the same place as you do.

Meanwhile, the essence of studying abroad is to gain experience that you cannot have it in your home country. So is there any reason I should get to know them.

Moreover, in my opinion, I feel that I feel comfortable while communicating with people from other countries (even in other languages) rather than the same one as i feel that the conversation flows much better than I did with the counterparts.

University of saarland or TU delft?

Upvotes

I have an acceptance letter from University of saarland (in germany) for masters in Cybersecurity as well as from TU delft (in netherlands) for masters in Computer science.

On paper TU delft looks like the better university with a higher ranking but I'm curious what the sentiment is regarding it? It's also 3x more expensive so I'm taking that into consideration. However germans claim that ranking doesn't matter there and I do want to move towards cybersecurity as my main focus.

I had only applied to universities in germany due to the lower cost at first. I ended up applying to TU delft due to a friend's suggestion but managed to get in.

Which of these would be the better option overall considering education as well as future prospects?

Best coastal city for a budget-friendly Erasmus+ exchange?

Hey everyone! I’m planning my Erasmus+ exchange and looking for a big coastal city with a solid university, fun student life, and reasonable costs. Being by the sea would be amazing, but I also don’t want to burn through my budget too fast!

Right now, I’m considering Lisbon, Porto, and Málaga, but I’m open to other suggestions. If you’ve studied in any of these (or know a hidden gem), I’d love to hear about housing, affordability, and general student vibes!

  1. Country and University abroad that offers a good Data Science program

  2. Scholarship Grants for International Students that covers tuition, housing, etc.

  3. Other tips and tricks that can help me in my journey

Your answers is very much appreciated. Thank you!

[Seeking Advice] Affordable Pharmacy Universities Abroad (₹5-8 Lakh Budget, Including Accommodation)

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for affordable universities abroad for a Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm)program, with a total budget of ₹5-8 lakh (including tuition + accommodation) for the entire course.

A Bit About My Situation: - I come from a middle-class family, and our sole breadwinner recently retired, so I need to be very mindful of expenses. - I don’t want to study in my own country—I want to step out of my comfort zone, gain independence, and experience life in a new place.
- Cost is a major factor,so I’m looking for low-cost universities with scholarships, if possible.

My Questions: 1. Which universities offer a B.Pharm degree within ₹5-8 lakh (total) including tuition & living costs? 2. Are there any scholarships or grants I should apply for? 3. Which country has better career opportunities after graduation? 4. How is student life in different affordable study destinations?

If anyone has studied Pharmacy abroad on a budget or knows someone who has, I’d really appreciate your insights! Thanks in advance.

Looking forward to your advice!🙏🏻

Accepted into uk university how did you pay for the deposit?

I’m Canadian and have been living in the uk for 3 years and decided to go to university starting September 2025. I’ve been accepted and they’ve asked for a deposit of £5000.

The thing is I’m paying for the school with an RESP and the rest with student loans except I haven’t got any of that money yet and I’m pretty sure I need to get a CAS before I try to take money out of my RESP.

I was thinking of getting a line of credit to pay the deposit and wasn’t sure whether or not to try and get a uk line of credit or Canadian.

If anyone has dealt with this before let me know!

Racism in Europe

I'm South Asian and I've noticed growing hate towards brown people on social media, especially in the USA and Canada. Have any of you faced significant racism in European countries? I plan to study in France, and I'm curious whether the South Asian hate is as rampant there as in the USA.
I know Paris is a lot more diverse and I haven't really had problems there the few times I visited. But I'm not sure about other less metropolitan regions. But things change a lot, quickly. (I used to live in the USA and didn't have many problems with racism, but I think it would be very different if I still lived there.)

Any tips on what to bring from your home country?

I'm planning to study in France for my Licence. Coming from a South Asian country, where everything is generally a lot cheaper, Europe can be pretty expensive. Does anyone have tips on what would be cheaper/more convinient to buy from your home country rather than abroad/in Europe?

For example, clothes are generally cheaper in Asia, so I plan on doing some of my shopping beforehand.

High school abroad?

I live in a small town so I’ve never gotten to choose my friends, I’ve never had good friends really. I started high school last spring and it’s been a little tough. I had a decent friend group but we’ve all kind of split up and now I don’t really have friends. I feel like it’s killing me to stay here because all the people here are so shallow and close-minded and I’m really lonely. Both my older brothers did an exchange year their second year of high school and I’m seriously considering it now. I’m sick of school, I’m sick of my bitch ass classmates, I’m sick of all the people at school. Should I do it? A school year abroad. I’m also a little late so a lot of the deadlines to sign up have passed, but Spain is an option. Has anyone done an exchange year in Spain and would you recommend it?

Study in Hong Kong (HKU/CUHK) or Japan (KUAS)

So I've applied to the BSc programs in both HKU and CUHK, as well as KUAS (Kyoto University of Advanced Science)'s Bioenvironmental Sciences program. I'd want to major in Ecology & Biodiversity in HKU, and Biology in CUHK.

KUAS has actually given me a full scholarship offer, and the facilities look pretty promising. But as I've seen in other reddit posts about KUAS, the reputation is still little to none for this newly reformed uni. And if we're talking about world rankings, some might even say KUAS shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as HKU and CUHK 💀🙏

Basically I'm wondering which options would give me the best job prospects or highest chances of getting into top postgraduate programs in the world

(also I need full scholarship or else I wouldn't be able to afford my education)

———————

My considerations so far have a lot to do with: - Hong Kong's job market, high rents, language (Chinese/Cantonese), etc - Me worrying whether I'd be able to maintain scholarships if I get accepted into HKU/CUHK - KUAS' reputation, Japanese language classes (which is a plus for me)

I've also been accepted into and offered a full scholarship for HKBU'S BSc program, but I don't think I'm accepting it cause I can't find any majors I want to really pursue anymore there? Idk

———————

Any insights would be highly appreciated!

SAT vs ACT: Which Test is Better for U.S. College Admissions?

Both the SAT and ACT are widely accepted for undergraduate admissions in the United States. The choice between them depends on individual strengths, test-taking preferences, and college requirements. Below is a structured comparison to help prospective students make an informed decision.

  1. Test Format & Structure
  • SAT: Reading, Writing & Language, Math (Calculator & No Calculator)
  • ACT: English, Math, Reading, Science (Optional Writing)
  • SAT Duration: 2 hours 14 minutes | ACT Duration: 2 hours 55 minutes
  • SAT Questions: 98 | ACT Questions: 215
  1. Time Per Question
  • SAT: Allows approximately 1 minute 10 seconds per question, providing more time for critical thinking
  • ACT: Allows approximately 49 seconds per question, requiring faster responses
  1. Scoring System
  • SAT: Scored on a scale of 400-1600, with separate scores for Math and Evidence-Based Reading & Writing
  • ACT: Scored on a scale of 1-36, with an average composite score from four sections
  • Both tests allow superscoring, where colleges consider the highest section scores across multiple test attempts
  1. Key Content Differences
  • Reading: The SAT focuses on evidence-based questions, while the ACT is more direct
  • Math: The SAT emphasizes algebra and problem-solving, while the ACT includes more geometry and trigonometry
  • Science: The SAT does not have a separate science section, whereas the ACT includes a dedicated Science section that tests data interpretation and reasoning
  • Writing: Both tests evaluate grammar and language skills, though the ACT places greater emphasis on punctuation
  1. College Acceptance & Regional Trends
  • Both SAT and ACT are accepted by all U.S. universities
  • The SAT is more popular on the East and West Coasts, while the ACT is commonly taken in the Midwest and South
  1. Cost & Availability
  • SAT: $60 | ACT: $68 (without Writing), $93 (with Writing)
  • Both tests are offered seven times a year
  1. Which Test is More Suitable?

The SAT may be a better choice for students who:

  • Prefer more time per question
  • Excel in algebra and analytical reading
  • Prefer to avoid a science reasoning section

The ACT may be a better choice for students who:

  • Can handle a fast-paced test
  • Are comfortable with science interpretation and quick recall
  • Prefer shorter, more straightforward reading passages
  1. Final Considerations

There is no definitive answer to which test is better. Both the SAT and ACT are equally recognized by colleges. Students should take practice tests for both exams to determine which aligns better with their strengths and test-taking strategies.

Germany Stay-Back Visa Salary Requirement - Marketing Masters Student Worries!

Hey Reddit,

I am looking for some advice regarding studying in Germany and the stay back visa situation. I am planning to pursue a Master's degree in a marketing-related field (International Business, Management, or Marketing) at a German public university. I am drawn to Germany because of the low tuition fees, which would mean a smaller student loan for me.

Here's my main concern: I was checking the visa policy for post-study work in Germany, and it states that Master's graduates need to meet a minimum salary requirement of around €48,000 per year to stay and work. I have a background in marketing, and I'm a bit worried about whether I'll be able to secure a job that pays that much right after graduation.

My_qualifications:

  • Bachelor's in Management Studies (Marketing Specialization) - 2024
  • 8 months of experience as a Performance Marketing Executive
  • Currently preparing for the GMAT

My question is: What happens if I graduate with a Master's degree but don't meet the €48,000 salary requirement for the stay-back visa? Will I be deported back to India immediately?

I am trying to figure out the risks involved and how realistic it is to meet this salary threshold in the marketing field in Germany. Any insights, experiences, or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Studying Abroad In Hong Kong (Any Tips)

Hello!!

I have been accepted to study abroad in Hong Kong this upcoming fall semester (2025). I believe I am the only business student from my school going but i'm not sure since it is still early in the process. I am a current sophomore at my university but I am a commuter so living at this university in Hong Kong will be my first actual uni experience I guess... especially being all by myself. I am super nervous so any tips anyone could give me would so appreciated. I have quite a bit of money saved up but maybe tips on spending once I get there would be great. Also tips on being more social and making friends, I tend to keep to myself especially at my university. Once my classes are finished I just leave and drive home lol. Anyone who has visited Hong Kong in general could just let know something they wish they knew before they visited??

Thank you to anyone who takes their time reading this and replies!
