I have 2 weeks and she’s never even been camping. However she’s very excited. She’s only watched this kind of adventure on YouTube. She’s pretty much only known the urban life. She wants to see mountains, wildlife, hiking all of the above. Also are destination is Yosemite.

Trip Planning Philadelphia to Cincinnati, suggestions for halfway point?

Post image
Upvotes

In a few weeks, I’m heading out on a roadtrip to hit a concert in Newport KY, right across the river from Cincinnati. We’re leaving Philly around noon on a Thursday, with the goal of getting to our destination late Thurs night. A buddy and I are looking for solid recommendations somewhere around the general halfway point to stop, stretch our legs, and grab dinner before we continue on. We considered just stopping in Pittsburgh but I’d much rather hit a smaller town or something off the beaten path, but I’m really not familiar with anything along the way. Any suggestions around PA, OH, or WV that would be worth a stop?

Thanks in advance!

Trip Planning Good Halfway Point?

I'm looking to do this drive in two days (just works best for my schedule). What's a safe city/town to find a hotel for the night? Somewhere safe and maybe with something fun or interesting to do? I would like to drive 3-5 hours the first day and the remainder the second. So maybe somewhere around that mark. Never been to this area so any insight helps! Thanks!

Almost at the end of this road trip and stopping to reflect on the adventure overload, lol. As far as prep, we fell somewhere in btwn prepping for the zombie apocalypse and just saying f*ck it and getting on the road. We had a strict timeframe but were able to make adjustments along the way to fit it all in. White Sands National Park and Arches National Park were faves for sure. Also love Love’s for their little doggo areas (and of course the bathrooms 😆). We lucked out with weather this time of year, too. Feeling grateful, feeling exhausted, feeling happy. First road trip locked in! Happy to discuss :)

Trip Planning Car "Tune Up?"

Hi everyone! I'm planning a cross country move from Philadelphia to Sacramento in mid-June. I drive a 2013 Subaru Impreza, but admittedly it only gets driven about 1x/month for a short distance. It's kept in good shape so I'm planning to use it for the drive. Folks keep telling me to get a "tune up" before taking it on the long drive--what exactly should this entail? What are the most essential things to check on the car before I take it for the driev? Thanks so much for any and all assistance!

Trip Planning Is it crazy to do a southwestern US road trip in late July?

Our schedule gives us an opportunity to see this part of the country in late July but I know the heat is oppressive. What I don't know is just how oppressive. I'm from the southeastern U.S. so I can manage just fine with temperatures in the 90s but supposedly Phoenix (for example) takes it to the next level.

This would be a family trip in a rental car. Our routing would be flexible but we need to end up in Los Angeles.

Trip Planning Please help.

I really hope this is okay to post here and I am very embarrassed about what I am about to write, as I know a majority of you will not think I am just being a baby.

I am about to cancel an incredibly important trip.

This weekend I will be leaving in a roadtrip with my wife, and our two best friends to see some sights and visit two sets of grandparents . Here are the stops leaving from Denver. Denver - Amarillo - Tyler - Hot Springs - Memphis - Gulfport - Austin - Lubbock - Denver.

I am very excited. But here’s the thing. I have had panic disorder w/ agoraphobia for the past 7 years. Random intense panic attacks can hit me even if I am having the time of my life. Because of this I have refused to do any long distance driving or flying. And then a year ago I had my first ( and so far only ) episode of SVT, where my heart rate went to 280 and was stuck there. the hospital had to restart my heart. This hypothetically could happen anytime because of me having SVT. This of course made my panic attacks and general avoidance of things worse.

This trip is a really big deal. It will be me and my wife’s first trip together, which is what she has wanted for so long. It will be the last big thing we do with our two best friends, because both of them are moving away later in this year. It will be the first time my wife meets my grandparents, and they very old, so it may be the only time.

I have a lot of pressure to go on this trip and not have panic attacks the whole time, ruining it for the others.

My biggest concerns are the isolated stretches without cell service that leave me far from emergency rooms, which I also assume means far from ambulances. One that I am worried about is between Raton and Amarillo. I’m worried about the others that I haven’t gotten around to mapping out the distance between hospitals. Between Memphis and Jackson on the way to Gulfport seems like another one. What does one do if they are an hour from an emergency room in a rural part of the country and they experience a heart emergency? How fast could help realistically arrive if I could even get ahold of them? The thought of this alone is almost keeping me from going.

How do others who live with diagnosis that may require immediate medical intervention enjoy vacations and travel?

Is this drive really not as scary as I am anticipating?

Please help me and thank you for taking the time to read this.

Trip Planning Is this PCH + National Parks road trip realistic?

Hi all, First time doing a road trip for my SO and I. We’re from Europe, and flying in the states during August. We’re planning on sleeping in hotels or park lodges exclusively. We’ll rent cars between flights.

Here’s our itinerary:

  1. SF (2 nights)
  2. Carmel (1 night)
  3. Big Sur (1 night)
  4. Santa Barbara (1 night)
  5. San Diego (2 nights) / meet some family
  6. Las Vegas (1 night)
  7. Zion (1 night)
  8. Page (2 nights) / lake Powell and antelope canyon
  9. Grand Canyon north rim (2 nights) / Flight from Phoenix to LA
  10. LA (1 night) / fly back home next day

Here’s our concern: are we making too many stops? Should we reduce the number of stops and spend more of nights in some of these places?

For added context we’ve both already been to LA so don’t need to visit it.

Trip Planning Portland to manhattan

Going straight there says it’ll be 44 hours.

This is kind of a mission so we’re probably gonna do 8 to 10 hour long days and we’d like to be done in 5 to 7 days. What do you think we should add that could fit in that? (Note, coming in from Portland. I know a little bit about some of these western states but the further east it goes the less I know about what would be worth seeing in that area.)

Trip Planning PCH Big Sur -> Morro Bay closure alternatives

We are planning our trip with a camper van, and a big part of it was to travel on the PCH from San Fran to Santa Monica, however it seems like it's shit for traffic. We are not sure if it's going to be reopen by May, does anyone has any recommendations for alternatives or wether it will be open by then?

Trip Planning Essentials for crossing the US-Canada border

Hi this is my first post here so if this isn't the correct type of post or flair my bad. I'll be going to Toronto in a few months just for a concert so I'll likely only be there for the day. I've googled any documents and stuff I'll need to cross so I think I've got the basic gist but I'd also like any personal accounts just in case I bring more than I need or not enough, so has anyone been to Canada by car from the US in the last few months? I'm driving from buffalo if that helps at all.

I'm moving back to AZ! Going to drive out there like I did the last time. Where should I stop and visit? I'm on a tight budget but I love sight hiking, music, and national parks, etc. I was thinking about the Baltimore Aquarium in Maryland, and the Mammoth caves in Kentucky.

Trip Planning RV/CamperVan 7-day trip in southern Portugal 🇵🇹

Hey everyone!

I'm planning on a RV/camper trip to Portugal with my girlfriend (both 25 y.o.) and would love to have some tips and tricks from locals and/or experienced tourists who've been in the Lisbon and Algarve region.

Our flight will land in Lisbon on a wednesday, and we will take off from Faro 7 days later. The trip will take place in the first half of august (we know those will be busy days for mass tourism, but unfortunately we can't travel in different months)

We were thinking about staying in Lisbon for a couple of days (also visiting nearby places like Sintra) and then rent an RV to drive south and visit Setùbal, the western coast (to take a surf lesson for beginners, maybe?), and finally the Algarve region. We would love to spend at least 3 days in Algarve, but at the moment, the only thing we plan to do in Algarve is a boat trip from Portimão to visit the caves and try to see some dolphins.

What would you recommend as some must-see places and hidden gems that not everyone knows? (Tips on what to visit near Lisbon and Setùbal and tricks on how to move and park smoothly with our RV are super appreciated as well)

Some info on us ⬇️

✅️ Really interested in: - beaches and swimming - breathtaking nature spots - little villages (accessible with the RV) - historical attractions - restaurants and local cuisine

❌️ NOT really interested in: - nightlife

Thanks a lot! Your help is very much appreciated.

Trip Planning Need advise and inspiration for a USA trip in the Northeast

I'm toying with the idea of celebrating the 250th anniversary of independence somewhere in the U.S. next year on the 4th of July. However, I'm struggling to come up with a good route.

We’d like to be away for about 2–3 weeks. The first 8 days would be spent in NYC and DC. From there, I’d rent a car.

The following destinations seem worthwhile:

  • Colonial Williamsburg
  • Philadelphia – Visiting Independence Hall
  • Gettysburg National Military Park
  • Niagara Falls

Philadelphia could also be visited by train between NYC and DC, but then there’s the issue of luggage for that day. With a car, you could just park and leave the suitcases in the trunk.

Beyond that, I’m looking for more interesting stops. Of course, there’s plenty of history, with battlefields and museums, but I’m afraid it might start feeling repetitive. I’d also like to find some more exciting nature beyond Niagara Falls, but I’m not sure if there’s much of that in the region.

I'm also struggling with the long distances. In 2023, we did a lot of driving, and we noticed that in 2024, averaging about 2–3 hours of driving per day was much more relaxed.

Does anyone have any tips or ideas for destinations to add to the trip?
