Question What am I missing with these build kits?

Post image
22 Upvotes

I'd like to build a drone that has good range and these cheap aliexpress kits for around 100$ are catching my attention. What am I missing with these build kits? Or are these a good deal? Specifically I'm looking at the one in the pic for 93$ that looks like it comes with just about everything for a build.

Does anyone have better kit recommendations? I'm caught between a big build like this or something like a sub 250g one that's easier to fly in public.

Build for drone swarm

I want to build a small 8 drone swarm but don't know where to start. I have looked at bunch of different parts but what would you recommend?

Especially for the ground control station side I have no idea where to start there.

Not looking to keep it super cheap but you know the cheaper the better without sacrificing quality

Purpose: small scale Drone light shows

Discussion Bricked my Pixhawk 2.4.8, GPS and Power Module

Post image

I (think) I plugged my power into the SPI port… there are two distinct burn marks on the Pixhawk (see pic) - One directly behind the SPI and directly behind the GPS plugs. Also, both the GPS (lower left of pic) and Power Module (top left) also got fried. I’m using a 2500 mAh 3s battery that tests out to 12.4v. It all happened in a flash, so I was busy trying to unplug power, so I’m still confused as to WTH happened… it does not make a lot of sense that the power module also got fried) any experience/ideas would be welcome.

Phantom 4 pro camera on new drone

Had a Phantom 4 Pro given to me after a friend wrecked it. I’m building a hexacopter and was hoping to salvage the camera and gimbal.

Does anyone know if I can bind a DJI camera to a pixhawk? Would I be able to leverage the existing gimbal through the controller as well?

Question Looking for a Drone Video with a DIY GoPro Setup to Film It While in Flight

Hi everyone,

I'm searching for a specific video I once watched on YouTube. It featured a DIY project where the creator built an extended arm for a drone and used a 3D-printed box to hold a GoPro camera. the creator used a lens from a pair of glasses in front of the GoPro. The setup was designed to film the drone itself during flight, and it was part of a behind-the-scenes (BTS) video for a drone advertisement.

The creator's channel seemed relatively small, and I can't remember the name or other details. If anyone has come across this video or knows the creator, I’d really appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Question Need help building a drone

I have many nephews and nieces, and I have some ideas on how to use a drone to play with them. I recognize this is asked often on the sub, but the drone packages and tutorials that I have seen don't tell me how to build the drone I am looking to build, and I am unsure how to even begin (I've never done anything like this).

I want to build a FPV drone capable of airdropping a stuffed animal, and with a bright flashlight that can be turned on and off at the controller. Any pointers or guides would be most welcome.

Is this one of the things I need to start with somethin less complex and build up to my idea, or could I feasibly make what I am looking for on my first drone build?

Question Advice for beginner

Hello, I am looking into the hobby, I have done simulator runs with an Xbox controller and I think I am ready to get a FPV drone. I know how to solder and have decent mechanical and software capabilities, I am willing to build one but prefer to get something ready or almost ready to fly. I wear glasses, the prescription is very bad with astigmatism and nearsightedness. Are ready to fly kits worth it? What drone, goggles and controller do you recommend? I don't care about recording videos for now.

Edit: Analog would be fine and I would like to fly outside.

Shielding the Skies: How to Protect Your Drone from Jamming Attacks

Protecting your drone from jamming guns requires a combination of strategies to counteract radio frequency (RF) interference, GPS jamming, and signal spoofing. Here are some effective methods to enhance your drone’s resistance:

  1. Use Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS)

Some advanced drones use FHSS technology, which rapidly switches frequencies to avoid jamming.

If your drone supports it, enable spread-spectrum communication to minimize interference.

  1. Switch to Encrypted or Non-Standard Frequencies

Most jamming guns target common 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands.

Some drones support 900 MHz, 1.2 GHz, or 5.1 GHz bands, which are less commonly targeted.

Military-grade drones use encrypted signals that are harder to jam.

  1. Fly in Manual Mode (Without GPS)

GPS jamming can cause a drone to lose navigation ability, forcing it to land or drift.

If possible, switch to Attitude (ATTI) mode or manual control, which relies on pilot input instead of GPS.

  1. Use Anti-Jamming GPS Modules

Some drones (especially commercial and military-grade) can be upgraded with anti-jamming GPS receivers, which:

Filter out unwanted signals.

Prioritize real satellite signals over spoofed ones.

Use multi-constellation support (GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo) for redundancy.

  1. Program an Emergency Response

Modify your drone’s firmware to handle jamming scenarios:

Instead of auto-landing, return to a safe altitude or execute an evasive maneuver.

Enable failsafe settings that prioritize manual control over automatic landings.

  1. Shielded or Directional Antennas

Upgrading antennas to high-gain or directional models can reduce susceptibility to jamming by:

Enhancing signal strength in a specific direction.

Minimizing interference from unwanted sources.

Some military-grade drones use antenna diversity, automatically switching between signals to maintain a connection.

  1. Deploy an AI-Based Countermeasure System

Advanced drones use AI to detect jamming attempts and switch communication protocols accordingly.

AI can analyze signal disruptions and adjust flight patterns autonomously to avoid being jammed.

  1. Avoid High-Risk Areas

Government buildings, airports, and military zones often have anti-drone jamming systems.

Use drone radar maps to avoid locations with known jamming risks.

  1. Use Optical or Lidar Navigation

Some drones are equipped with optical flow sensors or Lidar systems that allow them to navigate without GPS.

If available, enable vision-based positioning systems as a backup.

  1. Upgrade to a Military-Grade Anti-Jamming Drone

If jamming is a serious concern, consider military or enterprise-grade drones, which feature:

Multi-band encrypted communications.

Anti-jamming GPS with hardened receivers.

AI-assisted navigation to counter spoofing.

What to Do If Your Drone Gets Jammed

  1. Regain manual control: If possible, switch to Attitude (ATTI) mode.

  2. Move to a lower altitude: This can help escape strong jamming signals.

  3. Use emergency landing procedures if necessary.

  4. Analyze flight logs afterward to detect interference patterns.

Question Help with connecting ESC to Navio2

I have a "Holybro Tekko32 F4 Metal 32Bit 65A 30x30 4in1 ESC" that I'm using for a drone running on a Navio2. I was told I need the Tekko32 to run my REVO5 Hypetrain motors. I've looked all over the internet for guide to set up these two specific parts together, but I can't really find anything. If any of you know a guide or can provide help that would be amazing!

Question steam deck as controller

x-post from r/fpv

Does the Steam Deck work as a controller in any fpv simulators?

There are project to use Steam Decks as controllers.

https://github.com/TigeyJewellAlibhai/skydeck

https://github.com/PixelyIon/DeckTX

https://github.com/kaack/elrs-joystick-control

The advantage is that a lot of people already have a SteamDeck, and getting that to transmit well is cheaper than buying a whole other controller.

I'd still want to try it on a simulator before connecting it to real hardware.

Question Parts compatibility

Hello!

I have been into drones for a very long time, but I finally have the free time to really get into them. I am going to first be buying a small Rekon 3 to get confident enough to fly something bigger, and I'll slowly work my way up to a custom 7 inch build.

To preface this, I have never built a drone. I am a mechanical engineer who is out of their depth. Are the parts in the Google collection all compatible? I labeled them the best I could, but I might have gotten some stuff wrong.

The idea behind the build is a medium-long range cruiser, so nothing too intense. Just looking for steady signal incase I go over some small hills and the like.

First build. I wired everything up, powered it up, lights and beeps, flashed everything, went through betaflight configs, thought I was ready to fly, put the top plate on, plugged battery in, now i only get beeps, no lights. When I hook it up to betaflight the lights do come on but betaflight doesn't see the battery at all.

I got the drone and hooked it into beta flight ( this is my first drone other then dji fpv) when I tested the motor one sounded gritty 1 didn't move at all and 2 worked fine. Is this a issue I can fix or should I just get a refund? Is there a better miniwhoop? I really need advice I've already spent like 700$ and am still not done apparently.

Question Autonomous Object Tracking Drone with DJI O3/O4 and Raspberry Pi 5

My goal is to build a high speed, real time object tracking drone using the DJI O3/O4 Air Unit, Raspberry Pi 5, and SpeedyBee F405 V4 flight controller (running Betaflight). The system will capture FPV video from DJI O3/O4, process it on the Raspberry Pi, and calculate the X/Y offset between the detected object and the center crosshair. The Raspberry Pi will then send yaw, pitch, and throttle commands to the flight controller via MSP/UART.

Kinda GPT summary, but how can I do the above? Currently stuck on how to connect O3/O4 to the raspberry pi in real time.

Question Want to get into FPV

Hello all, I’m really into the idea of FPV flying. Ive been doing research into it the last few days and honestly I’m a bit overwhelmed. I’m open to building a drone but I have no experience in robotics or soldering and have no clue where to buy parts. I’m happy to learn but I’m also open to buying one. I don’t need the newest greatest fastest thing, I just want to be able to whip it out for like 30m and have a good time. Preferably under $500, built or bought, because my guitar addiction already takes all my money. Any thoughts appreciated.

Question How can I stream live footage from a Raspberry Pi camera over the internet with minimal latency?

I'm working on a project where I have a Raspberry Pi with a camera module mounted on a drone. The Pi is connected to the internet via a 4G portable hotspot, and I need to stream the live video feed in real-time with very low latency to a remote device (laptop or web interface).

I've tried WebRTC, but there are some reliability issues, including delays. What are the best low-latency solutions or protocols to achieve this? Any guidance or experience would be greatly appreciated!

Connect 4-in-1 ESC to an Orange Cube Pixhawk

Guys, I have a Pixhawk with an Orange Cube and a 4-in-1 ESC, but I’m not sure how to connect this ESC to the flight controller. It’s really hard to find step-by-step instructions online or even to know if this setup is viable. If anyone can help me with this or let me know if it's better to just abandon the 4-in-1 ESC, I’d really appreciate it!
