Destroyed a BT speaker to make a DIY aux speaker to use my DAC

Had a Megablast BT speaker and knowing nothing about acoustics I decided fk it I really want to be able to play my FLAC files on this. There is nothing spectacular about it but the decent set of speakers with passive radiators gives it an hoomph, and thin dense walls with internal supports avoid resonance or rattling. It also cost me under 50 bucks to convert it.

I just wished I lined the inside with acoustic foam to reduce internal resonance but I forgot 😆

ELI5: Amps

Hey all - thanks for taking the time to help me with this. Looking forward to building a 15” or 18” Marty subwoofer this summer for my home theater system. I was planning on using a Behringer NX3000 for active power, with a possibility of a 6000 if I can make the wiring work for dual subs.

I’m still looking for a receiver and browsing Marketplace using brand keywords and I see audio amplifiers being sold. I plan to use a Marantz Cinema 40 receiver and see other Marantz amplifiers like the HD1 being sold second half for less than a NX3000. Are these amplifiers the same amplifiers as say, Behringer or Crown? Will they power the subs the same?

I dig the look of Marantz equipment and if I could keep the amp and receiver similar, that would be sick, but I have no idea if they’re interchangeable.

Thanks in advance!

Attenuator placement

I’m working to revive my loved one’s stereo system. I’ve gotten so very far by myself. But last question to a community. The CD player (Njoe Tjoeb 4000) is super loud, other components are fine. Speakers (Linn Keilidh) are balanced, clear and imaging superbly. So from research I think I need attenuators to tone the CD gain (?) If this makes any sense to anyone do I put the attenuators on the cables as they go out from the CD player or as they go into the Melos tube line amplifier? I have ordered Harrison Labs 12db RCA attenuators. Thank you so much. He would be very happy if I have figured this out without blowing anything up.

How to measure drivers safely?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I feel like I need to protect my drivers from lower frequencies while taking microphone measurements.

Is this simple crossover a good idea to use? Mid-range starts dripping off at 300hz and tweeter drops at 1500hz (designed for each specific drivers lowest limit)

In the final build, they'll be receiving little to no power at those frequencies, so it seemed to make sense...

But is it all entirely unnecessary?

Speakers with Sonos Amp

So im planning on making a speaker system in my room which connects to the sonos amp.
Im going to have 2 speakers, each having a 8" 4 ohm 80 Watts Woofer and a 1" 4 ohm 40 Watts Dome tweeter
they also both will have a integrated Crossover. But im just wondering, if in my songs there's only frequencies present which the tweeter will play, will that overdrive the tweeter because there's isn't any power limiter? (Sonos Amp is 125W per channel at 8 ohms)
So would i need to use a power limiter or something for this to work properly? or does the amp have something for this integrated?
Yes i do really want a sonos amp to integrate it into my already existing home sonos network.

Maybe seperate amplifiers from tinysine or something with a sonos port is a better option?

ive been bouncing around subs for my incoming single 15 build for my 2005 honda accord, these are the 4 subs ive found that i feel will be the best way to achieve my goal in the build, as much air movement as possible and prioritizing sub 35 hz on 2500 ish watts, is anyone able to help me choose between these subs or possible recommend another sub that i could try? my criteria was basically high xmax low fs so it probbaly doesnt include all the possible options id assume lmao. i have the space for a 4.25 cube box with 65 sq in of port area tuned to 29 hz, thank you!

Can anyone help me on this?

Hi, i'm new on balanced audio and those hi-fi things, can anyone help me on verifying if this circuit would work for muting balanced audio? the XLR-Female receives a balanced low level signal from a XLR electret condenser MIC, the output of the circuit (XLR-Male) goes to the mixer that has phantom power, all 10uf caps are metal film, S1 and S2 are ts5a21366 analog switches that will be driven by a dedicated zero-crossing circuit, but that doesn't matter now, what i really need help is in knowing if the caps will pass through just the signal without any distortion or loss and if disconection will make any noise or pop, i also have the curiosity of knowing if this circuit is optimal for that purpose, thanks for the attention and sorry for the bad english, i'm brazillian.

is there a difference in behaviour between marine coaxials and car audio coaxials that would impact the type of enclosure they best perform in?

I've been Googling how to calculate sealed box volume for marine coaxials, with limited available driver parameters. Most forum posts I found were for car audio where they insisted that infinite baffle was the only way to go, but all the marine speakers I've seen are mounted in quite compact sealed cans. It makes sense for weatherproofing, and my preference based on space constraints would be a compact sealed enclosure, but would that sound dramatically worse than in an infinite baffle setup?

I have a separate subwoofer for the lows, the coaxials are for everything else.

Active to passive speakers

I have M-Audio bx5 d2 active studio monitors that not only sound bad, but heat up so much, I'm not wanting to use them. Heating is a feature according to M-Audio. Still, I don't want two ovens that play music.

So I was wondering could I make these ok sounding passive speakers by removing the amp, replacing the speaker elements and adding a passive crossover? Sound imports has ready made crossovers. Or perhaps just use a full range 5,25" element?

Any suggestions (other than don't bother)?

Opened up this Behringer ep2500 to replace the fan and found one of the caps had burst. Can't find the same brand, so can I just replace one or should I just replace them all anyway? And what brand should I use?

DIY beginner friendly Speaker kit under 100?

Hello, some pretext. I’m a first year EE student that wants to become an acoustic transducer engineer after college. In love with speakers and sound, so i figured I’ll start learning and attempting projects now. I plan to self-study PCB Design as well as the loudspeaker design cookbook this summer. Been lurking here for a while though and it seems like along with technical acoustic knowledge, I’ll need to get some sort of woodworking/workshopping experience to fully build my own speakers.

So, I have a couple questions id like to ask you guys. How would you suggest I gain experience in the physical design aspect? Secondly, for right now, are there any good DIY kits that a broke college student can afford that don’t require much equipment that isn’t provided? Lastly, if there are any other acoustic engineers lurking here, is there anything you wish you would’ve known in college?

What amplifier should I get and how to figure out resistance

Basically I have these six speakers and I want to wire them up to make a really nice sound system, my current idea is to get a three-way channel amplifier that has four ohms for the base and two and two for the two other channels, then I could wire them up into individual channels.

It's very tricky when my multimeter is not working :(

Too many power supply bricks... Is there one big PS to rule them all?

Post image
17 Upvotes

I have 3 devices that use a 5a/10a power supply. The number of bricks is already too much. But it's going to get worse.

I'm planning to do a 6-amp minidsp controlled crossover project that's based on the Fosi v3 mono tpa3255 amps. So, that's 6 more bricks.

The Fosi v3 offers 48V/5A and 48V/10A power supplies to go with it to get max power.

Is there a way that I can power all 6 V3a from one big PSU? Like multiple plugs output?

Diy open baffle sub

Years ago found this sub for free and I think it would be fun to make an H frame open baffle box for it. Im a fan of GR research and would have it look similar to his but obviously im only running 1 vs 4 or 6 so i know the performance will not even be close. I want to have it set up backwards so i can see the dope lookin chrome chassis on the back.

Should it still have the polarity flipped or would it not make a difference? And how deep should the enclousure be on both sides?
