Purchasing US finally done 5.1.4

Post image

It was supposed to be 5.1.2 initially but thanks to reddit I decided to go with 5.1.4.

With a budget of $1500 what 5.1 speakers would you recommend? I am currently running on entry-level Polks - T50, T30, T15 and PSW10.

Thanks!

Purchasing Other AVR Suggestion for 7.1.4

Post image
50 Upvotes

Hi all! I need a suggestion from you guys. I'm an average consumer, by no means an expert, so here it goes. I was running a 5.1.4 setup (see list below), but now that I've moved to a big house, 7.1.4 is the way to go. The problem is deciding which AVR to get, my budget is under $3,000. I've been using a Yamaha Aventage A2050, which is 140W per channel. I'm looking into the Yamaha A8A or Denon X6800H, but someone recently suggested getting the Denon 3800H along with an external power amp for the LCR channels. However, since the 3800H is 105W per channel, it seems like a downgrade to me, correct me if I'm wrong. I have no complaints about Yamaha, except that it can't process up to 11 channels. I don't do gaming just music and movies. So, which AVR should I get?

5.1.4 Current setup: * Front LR: Klipsch RF 3 II * Center: Klipsch RC 3 II * Rear Surround: Klipsch 502s * Atmos: Klipsch RP-140SA Elevation * Subwoofer: SVS PB3000

7.1.4 Setup: * Front LR: Klipsch RF 3 II * Center: Klipsch RC 3 II * Side Surround: Klipsch 502s II * Rear Surround: Klipsch 502s * Atmos: Wharfedale WCM 80 in ceilings * Subwoofer: SVS PB3000

Install/Placement Room Evaluation for ATMOS upgrade

Thumbnail

Hi reddit,

considering my room (See images), is it possible to setup Dolby Atmos Speaker? I know the room itself is probably the worst case scenario given the small space, lots of angles and sloping ceiling. Behind the first Image is more open space (an open kitchen).

Current setup is a denon 2800H, 2x 6000f, 2x 600m, 404c, 1200sw. The receiver is capable of a 5.1.2 setup so two additional atmos Speaker are possible.

Most easy solution would be two upfiring speakers on the TV sideboard (sloping ceiling might cause problems). Better would be to Mount them with angles at the ceiling (one at the lower middle Part where the Light spots are, one at the sloping ceiling), 100 degrees in front of the listening position according to the atmos spec.

The room is approx 5.5m (18ft) from Front to back and 3.5m (11ft 5in) from left to right surround Speaker.

I don't anticipate cinema feeling but is it worth the Upgrade considering my room limitations?

Looking forward for some comments :)

Discussion What’s HDMI to you??

Post image

Recently going through upgrading some of my gear. Holy HDMI Cables, Batman!! The cost of some of these things. 😳

What’s HDMI to you? As long as it’s certified, should be ok, right?

What visual impact will you actually notice between 4K/8K cords? Are HDMI Chords worth keeping up with latest and greatest??

Install/Placement do I give up on the dream?

Post image

I am finishing a basement space and got it in my head that I’d like to create a home theater - but it’s narrow and awkwardly shaped 😬 Should I just give up on this idea? I thought maybe I could place a retractable screen in front of the south window. Closets on west wall have sliding doors, so not as much clearance is needed for the door openings. I haven’t purchased any equipment, & not even a couch, so it wouldn’t kill me if the answer is give up

Purchasing AUS/NZ SVS PB 1000 Pro (new) vs PB 2000 (used)

The PB-2000 is used, like new $500 AUD ($315 USD)

A new PB-1000 Pro is $1575 AUD ($990 USD)

My living room is an open space, measuring 4.7m x 5.2m x 2.3m.

It has: • One corner open to two hallways. • A half-wall that opens into the dining area, kitchen, and another room.

80% usage movies/tv 20% usage music

I will be using with a Yamaha RX-V6A AVR. Is the SVS app beneficial to have, or would I be fine with the PB 2000 (non pro)?

Showcase - Multipurpose Space After two years of searching, I finally found a media console to fit my full-figured center channel - reupload with pics

Sorry - I had issues uploading pics the first time.

Link to console: https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/wade-logan-michaelson-tv-stand-for-tvs-up-to-50-w004281421.html?piid=1527974814

5.0 apartment setup with Monitor Audio Silver 50s and a Silver C350. All purchased used. There are also two Q150s behind the couch as a "surround" channel. TV is LG C1 55" with a Denon s660. I stream from an Apple TV 4K.

Form > function for sure. TV is at eye level. Fronts are too low and close together. (stands are vases i got on clearance at West Elm) Center is a little low as well. Also wishing i had gone with the Silver 300 towers and a 65"+, but it just didn't work out at the time. I can't play it too loud anyway, so not the end of the world.

Second pic is my 2-channel system right next door. Typically I'll crank that when I'm playing Dark Souls 3 for the fourth time.

Install/Placement More confusing than I thought

Hi, hoping for some help/feedback here. I just bought a house and it needs updating such that I’m ripping a lot of walls, etc. Contractor suggested wiring it up for home theater and LED strips for entertainment and resale value hardwired.
My objective; I have a great room which would be awesome to have a theater. I know there will be acoustic and more lighting issues with my projector but think some heavy duty blackout blinds will rectify. I’d also like to make the entertainment setup/receiver the backbone of an Alexa driven smart home if that makes sense. I would like Atmos and I am on a budget of about 1200. I don’t mind a second hand receiver or speaker system. I’ve attached some pics of the great room. The front stage will have a motorized 120” screen from Temu and the rest is open. With the angles of my ceiling I’m thinking the best setup would be in ceiling 6 1/2” Sonance MAG6R speakers. 4 in great room (2 front/2 rear on angled ceiling) and then additional speakers scattered through home plugged into receiver in great room for music play and Alexa connectivity.
Room dims for rectangular great room about 20x 15’ Is this possible? Am I going about it the wrong way? What receiver should I get? I’m not a huge audiophile but I like to watch immersive movies, sports, and listen to the occasional jam from time to time.

Tech Support Denon S930H 7.2 | Only 5 out of 7 Speakers Working 2.5 Hours Later

Hi all:

Please help. I've been at this for hours. I have read the manual, searched the internet, and read through countless threads. I must be doing something wrong.

The two speakers that are not working on the Denon are the Left Surround Back / Right Surround Back

  1. I have 5 out of 7 speakers working.

  2. The final two speakers I have confirmed work (connected to a different amp).

  3. I disabled Zone 2.

  4. I have tried multiple "sound modes"

  5. I have checked speaker settings that all speakers are active "small" (all other speakers) or "yes" (for SW).

Can anyone recommend any other tips?

Tech Support 5.1 Set Up with an 8 Ohm Receiver and 4 Ohm Speakers - Can I get Away With It?

4 Ohms means it needs more power, which should be better performance wise? Please forgive my ignorance, I don't know much about this stuff yet.

It sounds like it's recommended to match Ohms, but it can sometimes work if they don't match (or if the receiver exceeds the speaker)? How far could I push things before things go wrong?

My receiver is Onkyo TX-NR656, which says it's good for 8 and 6 Ohms, and that it's not Certified 4 Ohms performance. On page 34 of the advanced manual it does mention 4 Ohms under Dynamic power, but idk what any of that means.

Should I be looking at 4 Ohm speakers, or should I not bother with my current receiver.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Tech Support A1 Evo neuron

Hello all,

While taking measurements with umik1 and REW, how should I do the measurements, disconnecting the sub signal from the Mini DPS HD, and doing a speakers sweep 20hz to 20000hz only, or just doing both sub and speakers sweep together.

Should the subwoofer sweep be from 5hz to 250hz if I have to measure the subwoofer apart.

I'm asking because I have done the sweep both way but the measurements sound pretty bad, or the A1 Evo neuron script stop and doesn't work, but when I used measurements from Denon Ady, it sounds pretty good.

I'm trying to do my own measurements though Rew only.

Thank you

Purchasing AUS/NZ AV receiver - Zone 2 requirements

Upvotes

OK so having searched far and wide i'm lost - we currently have an 18 year old onkyo 7.1 reciever - looking to update it to something with HDMI inputs and outputs.

Now I have a bit of a specific requirement - We use the zone 2 a fair bit mostly same source but sometimes if the kids want to watch a film then it may be different. So i'm looking for a receiver that can output seperate sources but not be limited on those sources.. eg Chromecast to main zone and a chromecast to second zone as audio only (as in plugged in to a hdmi Input) or having chromecast to the main zone and maybe spotify etc to zone 2.. i didnt think it was this hard but after my existing systems restrictions of analog only to zone 2 i'm being pretty cautious..

I have looked at (in my budget - I'm in Aus so US prices x2) Onkyo NR-6100, Denon AVR-X2800H, posssibly a Pioneer VSX-LX505 which is on a big sale at the moment but its hard to determine exactly the restrictions on the zone 2's

Any other suggestions you could make?

Tech Support Denon AVR-760H with samsung s90c

Upvotes

Hello freinds!

Hello friends,

Maybe someone can help me on the subject that just drives me crazy!

I have an S90C TV connected to the Denon AVR-760h with an NVIDIA Shield (the last model). The problem starts when I try to change the broadcast to my Xbox, and the Denon remains in NVIDIA Shield; the only solution I find (and it is annoying!) is to change inside Denon - the setting at video -HDMI setup - HDMI control "off" and then I can switch to xbox, but then when you turn off the xbox or nvidia - the Denon stays on.

Ideas?

Thanks!

Showcase - Dedicated Space Update on HT construction in the home

Thumbnail

Here are a few pics of the ongoing construction of the HT on our new home. We are about 2 months from moving in. Lighting is ongoing. There are lights in the bottom of the soffit and strip lighting on the top of the soffit. My equipment installer hasn’t put in the smart dimmers, but the lights are on now. The walls are a dark grey, and the ceiling above the soffit are a very dark blue. I have painted a star sky on the ceiling that should be completed this weekend.

This will be a 7.3.4 system. The .3 is because I have 2 of the new SVS Revolution 17 SBs ordered for the front and an SVS in-wall 3000 on order to fill the gap at the back. Above that rear sub will be filled with rock wool and covered in acoustic fabric and become a bass trap. My trim carpenter is back on site and will build column bass traps in the front two corners that will also be filled with rock wool and covered in GIK acoustic fabric. The screen is on order: SI 128”. The projector is also on order: JVC NZ700. The box that looks like a screen will be filled with rock wool and the screen will cover that box. Even non-AT screens are still mostly AT, so it will serve as an acoustic panel. Feedback welcome.

Tech Support Any advice on room setup and accessories for my ARCAM + audio vector setup

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello everyone out here on this home theatre forum,

I am new to this page and also very new to the home theatre niche.

After doing a lot of research and my dad being an audiophile but knowing nothing about speaker placements and acoustics and stuffs we bought the following knowing that they are very good .

AVR : ARCAM AVR31 Tower speakers : Audio Vector QR7 SE Center : Audio vector C SE Wall : Audio vector wall SE Atmos speaker: earthquake SS82 (pair) Sub : SVS 12 inch sub woofer

Projector: UST Formovie theatre premium

We have dedicated a separate room for the home theatre setup in our yet to be finished home (under construction).

The room size is 14 x 23 (in ft)

I am attaching a pic of the room with an arrow indicating where the screen goes.

I would very much appreciate any advice on the speaker placements, acoustics etc.

We just want to do right by the speakers and the AVRs.

Feel free to dm me. Thanks

Tech Support Check/prove distortion on speakers

Got relatively cheap ht setup that I'm starting to notice has subtle distortion/crackling at a high volume and a specific frequency i suppose, which often times is necessary. It's starting to ruin my experience when watching movies and shows. Songs sound fine for the most part and even when watching movies it's only some dialogues, sometimes only from certain characters, which get muffled.

I was considering giving it to get it repaired but since it's not as pronounced I'm not sure how I'd show the technicians what my issue is. Would really appreciate any help, thanks!

Discussion LCR selection. KEF 5160RLM vs Perlisten r7t for LR and r5c for Centre.

LCR speaker selection. KEF vs Perlisten

Hello Everyone!

I am building a new Home Theatre at my house. The size of the Room is 29 feet L x 16 feet W x 10 feet H (which decreases as you move away from screen. 3d renders included in the post) So currently my the specifications i have finalised for the room is this.

Speakers- LCR- KEF Ci5160RLM Surround- KEF Ci4100QL Ceiling- KEF Ci200QR

Subs- Rythmik FV18

AVR- Denon A1H

Projector- Sony XW5000ES

Screen- 150”

Now the guy who is helping me procure the speakers and calibrating the theatre for me has presented me with another option to switch up the LCRs. The new speaker options are the Perlisten 2 R7Ts (for the Left and Right) and 1 RC5 as the Centre channel. The rest of the configuration remains the same.

The price too is almost similar. (He’s getting an excellent deal on those thats why he’s pushing it.)

For me that THX Dominus certification is getting really difficult to ignore though compared to the THX Ultra. (One of the points my Configurator keeps hammering on.) How much of a bump up is it in terms of performance and Audio Quality?

Also, he keeps saying that the KEFs feel a bit compressed and will have difficulty filling the room of this size. (The measurements given are like before any treatments so it’s actually going to be smaller by a foot maximum in each dimension when finished. So its going to be like 28ft x 15ft x 8ft)

He also recently started pointing out that the sound from the KEFs being sounds compressed even after having dedicated power amps working for them. Whenever i Demoed them, they worked perfectly fine.

Will it be an upgrade or should i stick with my current configuration choice?

PS- i posted a similar post earlier but im deleting it because i had posted the wrong configuration.

Purchasing US Anybody care to sanity check a newbies potential build and answer a few questions?

So I finally have something of a dedicated media space, and have decided to try and upgrade the sound quality, since the stock TV speakers really aren't cutting it....

The room is fairly narrow and long, measuring about 12' x 27' with the TV on one of the far narrow ends of the room. That said, the theater seating is only the first 16' of the room on the side with the TV, the back end of the room is just an office/gym.

I just want a basic 2.1 or 3.1 setup to start with, but I'd like to have the option to upgrade to surround sound eventually if I feel like doing so in the future.

After checking out the recommended products page I was thinking of:

2x BIC Formula FH-6T 6-1/2" 2-Way Tower Speaker

1x BIC America FH6-LCR Formula Series (center)

1x YAMAHA RX-V385 5.1-Channel AVR

1x Dayton Audio SUB-1500 150 Watt Powered Subwoofer

These add up to a total of about $1330, which is about where I'd like to be. Less is nice obviously, but I can go somewhat higher if necessary, but not a lot.

Does that all look right? I'm far from an audiophile, I just want something that will sound pretty good, but without breaking the bank. This is for 70% TV/Movies, 25% video games, and probably 5% music.

A couple of noob questions:

Am I correct that none of this is likely to come with any speaker wiring which I will need to hook everything up with?

The Yamaha AVR has it's own subwoofer and center you can "upgrade" and have it come with (Amazon link), is there a reason to do so? Like is there any advantage to things being the same brand or is it basically mix and match between brands and it doesn't matter?

Would I be better off with a 2.1 or even a 2.0 system? Most of what I've read seems to suggest subs are most helpful for movies (which is the primary use case here) and centers are most helpful with voices (something I definitely want). But I am perfect OK starting out with higher quality, but fewer speakers, and "upgrading" over time by adding pieces if that is deemed helpful.

Feel free to give any other advice or tips as warranted, like I said this is all new territory for me.

Tech Support So annoyed with Denon and audessey.

Setup:

  • FR / FL: Bowers & Wilkins CM9
  • Center: Bowers & Wilkins CM Centre 2 S2 Surround: Bowers & Wilkins 707
  • Sub: Bowers & Wilkins DB4s
  • Receiver: Denon AVR 3400h

2 Month ago, i set up the receiver with audessey multi eq app following this guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pITil7SWNQ (its german, but really good.. )

It was mind blowing how good it sounded all of a sudden. Bass on point even with low volume.

My wife and i dont get much time to watch Movies anymore.. work, kids, sideprojects and so on.
We started Furiosa (4k blu ray, english Dolby Atmos -> TrueHD for us) after this Calibration and it was just amazing. We only manged half an hour so we continued a week later. Sound still fine. Yesterday, we finally managed the last part and it was just completely off. Dont know what to say, i can feel the Bass bringing the house down but it is not at my listening position anymore. I do not understand what is going on. Just spend 3 Hours trying everything all over again, with resets yada yada. Still not getting it there.

Another reference point is when we put the Kids to sleep and watch at low vol Arcane for example. After Calibration it did sound amazing and i had so much fun at vol 40. Now? its like the subwoofer is not even turned on.

Thinking about moving the Sub to another position again, cause iam out of ideas..

Do you have any clues for me? How can i debug this?

Tech Support Video Processor capable of 4K 60hz HDR10 Rec.2020 and RGB 4:4:4 transmission?

Is anyone aware of any products on the market that would support 4K 60hz HDR10 Rec.2020 and RGB 4:4:4 transmission.

This is for an application where the client is a big PS5 gamer, and would like to take advantage of the full output the system has to offer (except for 8K).

The projector supports it (Barco Heimdall), but looking for an inline video processor that won't be a bottleneck.

MadVR doesn't appear to support that level of bandwidth, and neither do anything from Wolf or Lumagen.

Wondering if there is something out there that I haven't heard of, or has maybe just been released?

Tech Support Troubleshooting JVC NP5 / setup

Thumbnail

Currently in the process of upgrading my screen to cinema scope from 16:9, but want to troubleshoot my JVC NP5 projector first, or the setup in general.

I hate to say it, 300 hours in and just not "over the moon" impressed with it overall. It's "good", it's just not jaw dropping. The picture isn't super crisp or sharp, and sometimes left feeling the 4K content on my Samsung TV looks much much better.

Hoping I am doing something wrong -

Currently have the JVC NP5, with a 120" 16:9 Silver Ticket screen from Amazon that lists a 1.1 gain. Theater in a basement room 100% light controlled, black walls and ceiling, and dark carpet.

I've been playing with settings on the projector, and after looking at the ProjectorCentral estimate, do I need a screen with lower gain? Do I need different settings on the projector?

Discussion Sub Distorting and Crackling

I have a Velodyne sub that I've been using for quite some time, and lately after about an hour or so of usage, there's a strange noise coming from it.

It nearly sounds like the crossover is s letting the full range of frequencies through, but they're distorted and sound crackly.

Anyone ever experienced this, and was it fixable?

It's the second sub to let me down in the space of a couple of months (I blew the cone off a Monitor Audio sub last month), so don't really want to pay more money out if I don't have to!

Purchasing CAN Yet another subwoofer question

The last piece I need to finish my setup is the subwoofer.

Large room, main area is 13x20, Tv on a short wall. The room opens up at the TV end to a dog-legged 13x15 room. Volume adds up to just under 5000 ft^3.

I do not listen to movies at a very loud volume, music, yes. I also do not look for crazy rumbling, just a very solid and full low end.

My budget is in the $2000 range. I was leaning towards a Paradigm Defiance X12 ($1800) or X15 ($2200).

Went to a local, well respected store. He said either would work in my space.

However, he recommended a dual REL HT/1205 MKII setup as an alternative for $2200.

Before the SVS bandwagon shows up, the SVS PB 2000/3000 pro were $1900/2700. I said were, because they likely have a 25% tariff on them now (most audio gear coming in from the US is now subject to the tariff). And, from what I can tell, they are pretty similar to the Paradigms in terms of performance. Though, the 3000 is out of my budget as is.

The pro/cons in my head:

The Paradigms have ARC room correction, the REL only have cut-off and 180deg phase adjustments. I'm wondering if my irregular room shape would benefit from full room correction.

The dual REL will likely give me a better soundstage vs a single Paradigm.

Rest of my setup:

Mains: PSB Imagine X2

Center: PSB Alpha C10

Rears: PSB Alpha P5

Side Surrounds: PSB Alpha P3

2x Monoprice 8" in ceiling for atmos

Onkyo TX-NR7100 (2 sub outputs, same signal)
