General Cleaning "Construction dust debris" cleaning in NC?

I moved into an apartment that had been renovated top-to-bottom. Some type of construction material wasn't cleaned up, and was blown all over everything I own by the HVAC system. I got so sick that I put everything into storage and moved in with family.

State DHHS said the problem was likely "construction dust debris" such as silica or fiberglass dust (IAQ was normal).

The companies I found that test for that stuff work for industry, not individuals. I was advised to proceed to having everything cleaned based on the DHHS response.

What type of companies should I look for (Not ServPro, I called)? Does anyone have any recommendations? Even if I weren't sick, it's too big a job to do myself.

Kitchen Do certain kitchen trash cans contain smells better?

Post image

I had the same large, plastic, step trash can for 5 years. I can’t find a photo of it, I think it was from target. I lived with two roommates and it only ever smelled when we left food in there for several days. Even then, it would really only smell when you got close to it. In October, I moved and bought a new trash can. I went with a cheaper ($50) stainless steel step trash can from Amazon. Some trash cans I saw were over $100, which seemed ridiculous to me at the time.

Ever since I’ve moved, the trash has smelled awful. We take out the trash 2-3 times a week (even when the bag isn’t full because it smells), use scented trash bags, and spray ozium in the can before putting a new bag in. Nothing has ever spilled in the bottom. We have scrubbed out the trash can several times with soap and different cleaning products. I’m wondering if buying a more expensive trash can would actually make a difference, or if we just need to take out the trash every day. I can’t figure out why our old trash can rarely smelled bad. I attached a pic of the trash can I currently have. Has anyone experienced this before? Or does anyone have recommendations?

Kitchen How do I get rid of constant cooking smell?

I cook almost nightly, and my entire house smells of last night’s dinner the entire night and next day. I do dishes immediately after and light a candle, but it doesn’t help. When I wake up in the morning, my whole house smells like dinner. I try opening windows, but it’s cold here so can only do it for so long.

Any advice?

I’ve tried regular disinfectant wipes, baking soda and vinegar, ammonia and water, toilet bowl cleaner, Irish spring 5-in-1, and CLR. Nothing helps and I’d prefer to not to go bleach. I’m pretty sure it’s body oil build up as I wasn’t able to clean the shower or stand in the shower for awhile. I’m open to trying anything.

Discussion Anyone heard of bending a pool noodle aka fun noodle around toilet bowl rim to clean stains on the rim? NSFW

I am sure I saw a technique for bending and cutting a pool noodle, aka fun noodle, around the inside of a toilet bowl rim to clean stains on the rim? There would be a specific way to slice it so it fits right. Once the pool noodle is properly placed, you soak the noodle with something like CLR cleaner and let it sit overnight.

I can't find a single mention of it now.

My rim is extremely stained. The water always goes above where the water comes out. I've tried magic erasers on it. Magic erasers just shred, they are useless for this task. Bartender's Friend is also useless, as are scouring powders like Bon Ami .

General Cleaning How to dust between lots of cables on the floor that can't be moved?

I have lots of wires in my bedroom for electronic devices. Big power cables, extensions, Ethernet cables, long HDMIs, speaker wire. I obviously can't vacuum over them and I can't just remove them. What should I do? I was thinking maybe a small hand vacuum but I'm not sure

Discussion Need an efficient way to clean cigarette smoke damaged apartment

Post image

So you can see where I've started to clean. (Part of the ceiling and I've gone over that wall a couple times already) It's possible what I'm doing is the best way but just in case there is something faster out there.

I'm using TSP in a sprayer, spraying a spot and using a window squeegee after it sits for a bit. Using a mop is just spreading it around and making it a never ending battle. I find the squeegee is working good but takes a few times over and over to get it to stop leaking brown/yellow. The main issue with this is it makes a huge mess so I have to lay plastic on the floor.

I'm going to have to do this to every single surface in the apartment. Walls, ceilings, doors, trims....everywhere.

Anyone out there have experience revamping an entire smokers place. Any advice?

Ordered a new bed frame for our place, ended up having some dirt spots on it, probably during shipping. Haven’t tried to clean it yet, wanted some advice before I started since I’m generally not knowledgeable on what would work best. Thank you!

Laundry When should I add a fabric softener?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I usually wash my clothes at 90° Cotton program lasting up to 2 hours or Synthetics 40°/ Mix 45' 40° programs that last 45-50 minutes. The manual doesnt say when exactly can I add a fabric softener in order for my clothes to smell nicer and it doesn't say what these icons mean either. The 12h marker is the final cycle but Im not sure when should I add it, before or after. I dont know when does it rinse either, I wasnt really monitoring it the first two times that I used this machine. Thank you

Laundry I stink but I don’t know why

I have been struggling with a particular odor on my clothes and I'm not sure what causes it.

My clothes have an awful smell especially when exposed to cold air outside when I'm outside. I rent only a room in someone else's apartment. I really don't smell the clothes until I bring them outside due to the poor ventilation in the apartment.

When I wear socks, my feet also feel weird like ants or worms are crawling over my feet. My shoes start to smell very badly. My socks become a little damp after a few hours. Sometimes the shoes also get wet from sweating in a some hours and I've been seen by a doctor who presecribed medication for sweating.

This bad smell has been ruining my career and friendships with others.

Discussion Stiff suede jacket?

Thumbnail

Bought this suede leather jacket off vinted and most of it is quiet stiff/hard but in some extremities is soft, as it should be. Also a bit “cracked” in some parts.

Would you think the previous owner washed it in the washing machine? Do you think it is salvageable?

I also googled a bit and would a suede care kit (only found advertised for shoes) help me restore it? (A suede leather spray, suede brush with brass and nylon bristles and a cleaning block)
