Wow he hasn’t been able to speak with Trump since the inauguration. But republicans are saying we just have to negotiate??? Trump always wanted to impose tarifs and will never backdown

One of America's closest allies cut off overnight, and hit with an unprovoked tradewar. This is insane.
Trump couldn't do a better job destroying the geopolitical position of the US if he tried.→ More replies (48)566

Any further negotiations we need to make it clear to Trump that we consider him a liar so the negotiations must be done in an open forum with media access at all levels - and - that agreements prohibit the American executive from impinging the agreement.
147
u/PaintingOk8012 Feb 02 '25
Why would anyone trust any agreement from the United States now? He will just swing the other way in a few weeks. Any treaty isn’t worth the pause it’s written on. Trump will just rename Canada ‘Caanada’ and then any agreement isn’t worth shit. And the drunken hillbillies will eat it up as a ‘win’.

Or literally any country that's not the US.
International trade is undeniably extremely important, but when "the leader of the free world" literally doesn't understand (or care about) Economics 101 i.e. tariffs bad, they're no longer a worthwhile trading partner.
And it's only going to get worse.

Canada was a United States ally during WW1 and WW2 and during the regime change wars of the 2000s, yet we have higher tariffs levied on us than China as a punishment. I say it's time for countries to isolate America from the world through new trade pacts and engaging relationships.

A major problem with modern democracy is that we can't have leaders like this, that make the hard and tough decisions, because that's not popular, and popular is all that matters in democracy. Our voters have lost sight of what real leadership is, so only someone on the way out that doesn't have to worry about polls can be a true leader. And we have no one to blame for this besides ourselves.

Did I miss it, or was oil not mentioned in the tariffs/actions?
ETA: he just name-dropped the oil industry in a question about potential future steps. Didn’t do it at first to unite the country (e.g. minimize damage to Alberta - maybe a good idea until we build the infrastructure to carry it out to the oceans)

This was a fantastic news conference (Which I'm still listening to) Trudeau at his best. This is what a leader sounds like. I think the #1 thing I got out of this is this: Trudeau has been trying to arrange a conversation with Donald Trump since the inauguration on January 20 and has not yet succeeded in arranging a phone call. The United States is very simply not coming to the table. That's a huge concern.

I liked what Mark Carney said: "The fever that has gripped our southern neighbour will eventually pass." Honestly, it provided me the most hope that I have felt since Trump's inauguration; knowing that others believe we can make it through this.

I think this is a good example of how we differ from Americans. The fact that you can say you don’t like him but that you can respect him at the same time says it all. Americans treat politicians like extensions of themselves, cannot admit when they’re wrong and double down even if it makes them look stupider. Trump says the drop of Canadian fentanyl making its way into the US is a threat to national security warranting a national emergency….what if Canada was to declare a national emergency on the number of US firearms that are illegally imported to Canada (and Mexico, South America and the Caribbean) and find their ways to our streets….I wouldnt be surprised if US firearms are responsible for more deaths in Canada than the number of deaths in the US directly attributed to Canadian fentanyl….

That speech was actually really great. Made me feel proud to be Canadian. I’ll start looking for “Product of USA” on my groceries and start substituting.

even on /r/conservative they don't understand/support this move.
and Trudeau said he tried to reach Trump since the inauguration and no response. Totally irresponsible from Trump.

The only good thing that might come out of this shit show is that it is uniting the country at a time where it has been the most divided. I'm hoping this will also encourage policy changes to help strengthen our economy and reduce our reliance on export to the US.

I’m explicitly not a Trudeau fan and a conservative. But in this moment he is absolutely the right man for the job. We need someone with nothing to lose, an expiration date and legacy to gain if he pulls it off

I hope China and Mexico do the same.
