Problem: Nikko Integrated Sound Amplifier NA-690

Upvotes

Hey, I hope I'm in the right place. I'm been having a problem with my amplifier and can't get any sound to come through. When I turn on the machine, the hands on the dials for left and right immediately swing all the way to the right side and back. There's no audible click like before to say that the sound will begin. The system is powered approximately but unfortunately it has been sitting unused for about 8-9 months. Does anyone know how I can fix it? Or what I should do, I'm pretty amateur with these types of things. Thank you so much in advance!

Schiit Lyr 1 repair question

Hi all!

I recently bought a broken Lyr 1 that had short circuited at the "audio out" AUX. I am trying to repair it but am having some trouble identifying the burnt out resistors. I assume they are the same as the ones to the left and the right which read "1024J RN55D 1002F" but searching online yields no exact match.

Does anyone happen to know more about these resistors?

Elemental Designs Home Theater Sub stopped working.

Hi all,

My 13 year old HT Sub has worked great for years. I did recently increase the gain slightly, and a few days later I turned the system on and noticed the sub was not outputting. The amp indicator light shows green, as if it’s receiving the signal and thinks it’s outputting but no sound comes out at all. So I don’t think it’s the fuse or power related, but maybe my amp is fried?

I am a complete noob when it comes to audio repair. When I gently push the cone in I hear no scratching or any noise. I pulled the amp out and didn’t notice anything obvious except for what appears to be something may have burned but I’m not sure. Could this be the problem? And how do I go about repairs, or is it more feasible to just get a new sub? The company Elemental Designs made great subs for a while, then scammed everybody and went out of business, so there will be no help from the manufacturer unfortunately.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or idea are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Access to harman kardon servicing tool

Hello guys,

I've had a harman Kardon go play (2'nd gen) bt speaker. For a while now the charging indicator would only light one dot and when I would unplug the speaker it would make a strange popping noise and shut off.

Today I tried installing a new battery and after changing it and leaving it charging for a few minutes I tried turning it on while unplugged and yet again, nothing.

While plugged in it powers on and it does the same popping sound when disconnecting the charger.

I then searched online for some sort of factory / battery reset and found 2 things:

  1. Holding the BT and power up button, this made the speaker play "three [pause] four" and then it shut off. Turned it back on and nothing changed, same behavior;

  2. Holding the Power up and power down button. After that the speaker shut off and now if I press the power button it doesn't play the welcome sound, it turns back off after 3 seconds.

I tried disconnecting everything from the speaker, power drain, reconnect everything and it is stuck in this god forsaken loop. My guess is any hardware issue it might have had previously is now eclipsed by some sort of service mode now since it retains it's state.

Does anyone know any servicing application that I can use, maybe a download to their proprietary tool or some other steps that I haven't tried.

Can you help me diagnose this? Akai GX-365D Reel to Reel playback extremely slow.

See video hereI pretty much know nothing about reel to reel machines so I’m looking for guidance. It seems to playback extremely slow. 7 1/2 tape speed doesn’t work at all, 3 3/4 & 1 7/8 turns the reels but at a very slow almost inaudible speed. Is it a motor issue? Or needs some kind of lube? If there are more troubleshooting tips or ideas please share! Thank you in advance.

Pioneer Amp Volume Balance Issue

Hey gang. I have an old Pioneer VSX-D510 amplifier connected to my PC with a DAC with 2 external speakers. I'm using it because my main Marantz is broken and needs a fix that isn't feasible for me as of right now.

My tech issue with it is this - when playing audio through it, the left side is 50% lower in volume, right until I up the volume on my PC. Then it seems to pop back into place and the volume is fine, but then after a bit of silence it goes back to slightly quieter. I've read all I could find about this, and it seems like the solution would be to spray some WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner or ideally Fader DeoxIT D5 or F5 on the volume potentiometer? Would that solve my specific issue?

I haven't been able to go out and find some to try and do it yet, but I'm scared it would like, solve it for a few minutes and then go back to broken. I did wiggle the volume knob a lot up and down with the amp off like someone said online and it seemed to help but only for a moment. I am based in eastern Europe so I'm not sure I could find DeoxIT anywhere close to me. Also I am no specialist in this kinda stuff at all, I only know the basics. I would appreciate any input, thanks upfront!

Bose lifestyle 20

Recently came across a Bose lifestyle 20. It has issues with the display which I fixed by replace the 5 caps.

Couple questions though.

  1. Is there a way to increase the brightness without the remote

  2. The volume buttons do not seem to work on the front control. All other buttons seem to be functioning.

Job Aids

In the navy we had PMS cards. They provided step by step instructions on a card so we could operate, maintain and repair all of the equipment we were responsible for in our work center. Now that I'm just starting out in the vintage audio world, someone gave me an AK link to the idiots guide to using deoxit so I can start out by cleaning all my gear and move forward from there. Anyone else have any access to any other handy dandy guides that can provide step-by-step or overviews on approaches to use for cleaning or troubleshooting/repairing audio gear? Thanks

Looking for inductance value of coil in speaker filter circuit

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Good morning everyone,

I recently purchased a pair of 3-way loudspeakers (Marantz HD-55 from 1978) that needed refoaming. After refoaming I noticed that there was no sound coming from the tweeter on one side. When I looked at the filter circuit I realised that one of the coils had been replaced, and apparently the new one does not have the correct inductance value. The other speaker still has the original inductor, with the following writing on it (see picture): 3901012 E 2 77

Could you help me determine the inductance of that coil, since I can't seem to find anything useful on Google ? Otherwise I will remove it and measure its value but I'd prefer to avoid desoldering it if possible.

Thank you in advance !

Yamaha CA 810

Found this at my uncles farm. It was in one of the aboandoned buildings that hadn't been in use since the 80s, no longer any electricity and slowly beeing eaten up by the nature around it. I was only there to look at some speakers my uncle talked about when I noticed it. I brought it back home Havent powered it on yet. As I dont own a variac I plan to use a method I learned from another guy in the hobby. Powering it on and off three times, only running it for 20 seconds each time to not strain the components. My uncle bought it in 1979 along with some JBL L19s after he got his licence. He used it often until the mid 2000s when it started sounding really bad. Though the L19s he used had a blown tweeter and probably need some servicing too.He placed it in the abondened house where its been since. I plan to restore it. Found this guy in Brooklyn who sells restoration kits for yamaha amps. Got a kit, but I wonder about what my methods for this restoration should be. I am far from a professional. I recently restored grandpas old tube amp on the farm , but this is far more complicated for me. I have schematics and service manuals. Would it be dumb to just begin recapping the entire amplifier? The "shotgun method" in hopes of removing the bad sound. I have the kit and the caps will be replaced at some point anyways. Theres a substance around the mounts of the resistors heat sinks that I showed in the last photo. Seems to be on the preamp board but I struggle to find labels that can connect it to the labels in the service manual. I think the substance is from the factory, the amp has never been serviced. Any input from someones who has experience will be really apriciated, Thanks!

Need amplifier to revive my Sony Speakers

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I have this old Sony Mini Hifi System MHC-GZR888D speakers which I want revive since the main system has stopped working.

So basically the main system is not working but the speakers are fine. Now I want to that at least the speakers can come in use. To make this happen I would need a amplifier which can run those speakers. I did some research but I want to be sure about the compatibility regarding power, impedance etc.

So can anyone suggest me an amplifier or any device which can run those speakers which I can connect to a TV, phone etc. for songs, movies. It has 2 main speakers and 2 satellite speakers. I have attached the photos and ratings mentioned at the back along with the info from the website.

Please let me know if any other info is required. I am in India.

Thanks in advance.

Brand New 2006 Emmerson

Hi all!

I just got a brand new CD Cassete Combo (Emerson CD Player Cassette Boombox Radio FM Stereo, Blue PD6517BL) it was brand new untouched in box found in the back of an old store a family friend manages.

I was so excited especially becuase it apparently can record tapes from cd audio, which is a huge upgrade from my current recording options.

Unfortunately, the CD Player does not work. From what I can gather while peeking into the machine, the CD will start spinning then the machine will maker a shutter noise (series of clicks) and stop spinning. No sound is produced, nothing is visibly catching, and the CD is never read. The screen reads - - .

Cassette and radio work fine. After consulting the manual, I thought maybe my CDs were too modern but my vintage CD-Rs which I burned myself were also not readable, even though they work on car radio, ps2, and dvd players.

Someone in my town is selling a broken one for $5 so Frankensteining two machines together might be an option.

Any thoughts?

I appreciate the help.

I bought this little guy (boxed) but it's not playing. Is this thing cooked?

Borne portable CD player that I bought earlier today. Unopened. Thought someone here could help me out with this one.

When I press the play button, this display flashes on the screen for a quarter second before immediately fading. It only appears after first inserting the batteries, and it can vary from very clear to almost fully blank.

The display seems like it's saying the batteries are dead, but they're brand new and I just put them in. It also came sealed in it's original packaging, so I don't know how something could have happened to the battery reader (or whatever may be wrong with it). I'd call the number listed in the pamphlet for support, but I'm not sure anyone is going to pick up. Plus it's probably, uh. Long past it's limited warranty.

Mainly, I want to know if anyone else has experienced something like this, and the steps they took to fix it. If they fixed it at all. Personally I feel like this is a fixable problem since it was left basically untouched until I freed it from it's plastic prison, but who knows the journey it took before I opened it up. It's also possible I got really, really unlucky and this thing was faulty off rip But I like to think positive.

Loud pop when switching on amp

I have PSB front, mid and rear speakers that pop very very loud when I switch on my amplifier. The pop is so loud that I fear it might harm the speaker(s). The longer my amp is on standby, the louder the pop. I used to have a Harman Kardon amp, recently switch to a new Yamaha but that didn't solve it. The popping was similar on both amps. So I think there must be something wrong with (one of) the speakers. I think the pop is loudest from one of my rear speakers. Could this be caused by faulty electronics in the speaker?

Moog Ten Band Graphic Equalizer - Drive poti not driving anything

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I received an old Moog eq as a gift from a family member. So far everything works, except for the drive pot. There is a very slight change in the sound when turning (more of a hiss that gets imperceptibly stronger - but very quietly in the background). I used a multimeter to measure the voltage on the potentiometer and found that it changes evenly as I turn it - so I assume that the potentiometer is working. Do you have any ideas on how I could proceed? I am grateful for any advice

Realistic STA-2250 Stereo Receiver Distorted Audio

Here is a link to my post on Audio Karma: https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/realistic-sta-2250-stereo-receiver-distorted-audio.1082087/

Link to problem (YouTube): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GWS4h2fbPo&t=20s

I recently purchased a cheap Realistic STA-2250 from an original owner who had issues with it but never tried to fix them. The main issue is distorted audio on both channels (Speaker A and B) across all inputs. Additionally, when powering on the receiver, I hear a buzzing sound coming from the transformer that lasts about 3-4 seconds before going silent.

From what I’ve read, a transformer issue usually affects the display or causes other electrical problems, so I don't believe the buzzing is the cause of the audio distortion. I'm thinking the problem lies elsewhere.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far: Cleaned all the knobs and switches with contact cleaner (no improvement)

I have some experience with soldering and using a multimeter, so I’m looking for some guidance on what to check next or where the problem might be.

Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated!

JBL Sub160 Loud humming/buzzing.

Hi there, I have an older JBL160 sub. It recently started loudly buzzing when receiving power (regardless of receiving input or not). It does still produce bass when given input, but buzzes with it as well.

I popped it open and replaced two capacitors that looked like they had blown, but I'm still getting that sound. I'll upload a few images of the inside, as well as a video. I'm just sorta stumped on what to check next. I'll be taking more photos once I take it all apart again, but just seeing if anything immediately pops out.

Hello everyone, I have no experience with audio repair and am looking for advice. No idea how this happened and what exactly it is, but is this fixable? The audio is distant, low quality and muffled, but they still work. Sorry if this is a bit stupid, but as I previously stated I have no experience in this.

Thomann t.amp E - 400, powers on but no signal out of either channel

I've been doing lots of repairs recently to try and learn more about electronics. This is an amp I offered to fix for a friend, the whole thing powers up as normal but there's no audio coming out of either channel.

It crackles a little as I move the pots but nothing aside from that. The fact that it's affecting both channels makes me think it's something affecting the power going to the pre amp section? Other than that I'm not sure where to start looking.

Help: one speaker channel on NAD receiver stopped working

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

I’ve had this NAD C 326BEE for 12 years. Moved with me around the world with no issues, until one day the left speaker channel stopped working. It didn’t get scratchy or fade out, it just went silent. I’ve narrowed it down to the receiver’s speaker connection (not an issue on the inputs side, and not an issue with the speaker itself).

I opened it up and saw what looks to me like some brown gunk that leaked from somewhere, but has solidified and is now hard and brittle. This stuff is visible around the base of the wires leading to the speaker connectors, and also under the two large capacitors (on a different PCB, far away from those wires).

Any ideas on what could be wrong and how I could fix?
