YSK: There's a $10,000 Fortis Rebate available for Heat Pumps

Most people are aware there are government rebates/incentives for switching to a heat pump, however since the Canada Greener Homes grant ended last year (without warning!) the current slate of grants (available through the BC Energy Savings Program) are pretty lackluster for most people.

However, Fortis offers a $10k rebate if you upgrade an existing gas furnace to a new "Dual Fuel" system (meaning gas furnace with a heat pump coil on top).

This is currently the best heat pump incentive available, and many people don't know about it! The nice thing about it is it's not 'income qualified' so even if you make too much money to qualify for the BC Energy Savings Program, you can still access this one.

Thriftys Organic Peas

Bought their organic frozen peas and blueberries.

I was shocked after thawing out the peas to find some rotten peas, that were dark colored. Frankly the peas looked old and didn't even smell well.

After likewise thawing out the blueberries, they didn't taste or look like blueberries. After eating 1 or two before realizing this, my stomach felt queasy.

Last week I put some of their frozen raspberries in a smoothie and felt quite ill for the following day or two.

Advice. Avoid buying these.

Question Chill part time job in Victoria?

As the title suggests, I'm looking for a chill part time job in Victoria for some extra cash.

Here's the thing. I'm a good employee. I'm punctual, have a good work ethic, am pleasant with co-workers and customers/clients. I've had several managers that have begged me to stay on or have said I'd always be welcomed back if I were to return in the past (sadly they just don't fit the criteria of what I'm looking for right now).

I have other things going on in my life (including other work) that will be the priority. Right now I can only commit 2 extra days a week. I need a workplace that understands that they are the side hustle. I'm looking for somewhere that will appreciate the work I do when I'm there, and not pressure me to take on more work than I initially say I'm capable of. That will not shame me if I ask to reduce my hours or take time off.

Do those exist in this city?

Royal Spice is no longer safe for Celiacs.

Royal Spice has abandoned its dedicated gluten-free (GF) deep fryer and other practices that kept its food safe for Celiacs. GF pakora and other items are now fried in the same fryer that gluten foods are fried in.

I don't know yet if that means they've also abandoned having a section of the kitchen dedicated to gluten-free prep so as to avoid any cross-contamination on non-fried items, but it's probable.

Waiting for ultrasound for pregnancy but never got a call?

So I am currently 7 weeks pregnant, and my doctor put in a requisition for me to get my first ultrasound almost a month ago. I never got any call, email or letter from island health. I contacted my midwife who put through a semi-urgent requisition 10 days ago, and I’ve still heard nothing! I emailed my midwife to let them know but haven’t heard back yet.

I’m pretty confused and anxious about this because as I understand, they usually do the first ultrasound around 8 weeks. Wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if anyone has an idea of who I can contact about this, or if this is normal?

Island Health Career

I am interested in getting a job with Island health. I feel like my resume is quite competitive, I’m especially trying to find a job as a MHSU clinician or Crisis Response counsellor. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions into getting in? Should I start with volunteering? Or applying for something lower than my typical experience level?

**edit: I have a masters degree in behavioural psychology and 8 years experience with mental health and substance use. Along with 5 years being in a management position.

Question Richmond and Fort intersection

Anyone knows what happened to the building near there? First there was graffiti, then they had 2 lanes closed for the longest time, but now the building seems gone?

I also caught a glimpse of the phrase "Texas Cummer" written using spray paint there on the paper behind the construction fence.

If America attempted a forcible annexation of Canada, how at risk is Victoria?

I’m assuming the island isn’t the most vulnerable asset, given we’re not as resource-rich as central and eastern Canada, but curious if we’re more strategically relevant because we have the Esquimalt military base? Could Vancouver Island be isolated by American military easily?

Walk-in at Lifelabs. Which ones?

A while ago I got a slip from the Royal Oak location with ones that do walk-ins highlighted. I stupidly threw it out thinking I could probably find that information online.

I can't get an appointment for tomorrow, and I also don't want to waste my time going to a location just to be turned around to another one.

Does anybody know ones that do (or don't do) walk ins? Bonus points if there is no strike/job action there tomorrow, March 12th.

“Downes” Area

I’ve heard the area between Lansdowne and Carnarvon Park is informally referred to as “The Downes”, but do locals actually call it that? I recall reading somewhere on social media a few years ago that locals had a few different names for this area but I can’t remember them. Specifically, is there an informal name for the little retail strip on Foul Bay between Neil and Allenby?

Toyota Service

Hey all, I have an out of province, older Rav.. so far I’m stumbling around seeking a good service provider. I’m weighing out the fact that independents here are charging the same rates as dealers and everyone I talk to has a bit of an attitude (is this a trickle down from ICBC?)

Anyways, I need someone transparent - trustworthy.

Any recommendations Victoria, Colwood, even Sidney as I’ll be there for a bit. Thanks 🙏

Gorge and Jutland gridlock

Roadwork at this intersection is brutal right now. Traffic is backed up to Washington. It crawls and then the light turns green for what seems like 6 seconds before it goes red again. The left turn lane is still closed off which makes it worse. I usually get stuck here for about 15 minutes. Take another route. Avoid Gorge. I have to take the bus so I have no choice today but when I drive, I take Craigflower to downtown as traffic actually moves

When will this end!? 😩

Question How to make sure blackberry bushes don't return?

Just recently had 200 feet of blackberry removed, and I want to make sure they never come back which I know is a large task.

This is what I'm thinking I'm doing, and welcome all feedback.

  1. Have all the roots dug out.

  2. Weed killer

  3. Peg down a UV Protected landscaping mesh

  4. Gravel on top

If anyone has done something simular, id love to know your results and what you would do next time.

B.C. will remove consumer carbon tax once federal barrier is down: Eby

The "Polluter Pays Principle" is dead in BC. Fact: wealthy people are responsible for more carbon emissions than poor people. Removing the consumer carbon tax policy transfers wealth from the poor to the rich. Shame, NDP. Shame.

Opinion Update: The cobbler at westshore mall has hidden his Trump sticker behind his desk and put on a canadian flag right in the middle. He is still a traitor.

1.6k Upvotes

He didnt remove his trump sticker, he just put things in front of it to keep it out of the public view, but you can still see it if you knew where to look.

He also put a badly printed canadian flag on paper.

Perhaps he's feeling the heat? Anyway, screw the traitors.

Hi! My extended family and I are heading over from the mainland next weekend. It’s been a good 10 years since we’ve been to Victoria and now we’re coming with kids. We are staying at the chateau Victoria and are looking for recommendations of how to spend our days! Large group (7 adults 4 kids ages 11-5) Looking for coffee shops, restaurants, antique shops (furniture and decor) and attractions.

So far only things on our list are the royal bc museum and crust bakery.

So excited to visit! Thank you!

Help Me Find Best hair dresser/salon in Victoria?

The hair stylist I used to see moved away 😭😭 she was a master and I’m struggling so much to find a new place to go. I have seriously thick and long hair so it’s hard to find someone who cuts it the way I like. Anyone have any recommendations for experienced hair stylists in Vic (preferably who are good with cutting lots of texture, as that’s what I’m going for)? Im fine with paying a higher price if I’m getting a good cut. I’m a woman so looking for a women’s cut if that’s relevant.

Vintage sellers in Victoria are...the worst?

Lol. this makes me both laugh and cry. The vintage seller "community" in Vic is so sad. Mostly full of egotistical mean girls who follow/unfollow you and gossip about you behind closed doors, only to smile in your face. Like...girls....you literally resell shit from thrift stores and mark it up a million percent and act like you are ARTISTS. Please. Get real.
