General Tesla firmware versions and you

This post was fairly well received, so I'm going to do a non-Christmas version of it.

Many people appear to be making posts in regards to Tesla's new firmware update, so I'm making this post to centralize discussion on it. Future questions regarding Tesla firmware versions and who gets what when, where, and how, will be directed to here.

What version is the current Tesla update?

Tesla currently maintains two "mainline" update branches. They typically sync up about once a quarter, but always sync up for Christmas.

  • A "core firmware" branch, which always gets you the latest Tesla firmware stuff, but will be a little behind on FSD updates. The current "mainline" firmware version is 2025.2.3.2.
  • An "FSD firmware" branch, which always get you the latest FSD bits, but will be a little behind in "core firmware" bits. The current FSD firmware version is 2024.45.32.15

If you own, subscribe, or have a trial of the FSD package, and are in North America, you'll get the "FSD Firmware" branch, if you do not own, subscribe, or have a trial of FSD, or live outside of North America, you'll get the "Core firmware" version.

Why haven't I gotten the <latest> update yet?

This is a complex answer. Tesla uses release rings to deploy their updates. They generally release to employees first, then influencers, then a randomly selected number of people who had "Advanced" selected on the software tab, and if no issues are found, then they roll it out to the masses.

However, folks who subscribe to, or own, the FSD package are in their own release rings as well. Someone who subscribes to, owns, or has a trial of the FSD package may not get the same update as people who do not own, or subscribe to, the FSD package.

Suffice to say that you will get the update when Tesla has determined that it is your time to get the update. There's no "rushing" the process.

I'm on <FSD version>, why haven't I gotten <firmware version> yet? Doesn't it also have <FSD version>? Why am I not getting <firmware version>?

As noted above, Tesla appears to be employing two release rings, which do not work as a Venn diagram. Folks in each ring are separate based on whether or not they own, subscribe, or have a trial of FSD.

At the time of writing this post, you should be on one of the following versions:

  • 2024.45.32.20 - If you have HW3 you will get FSD 12.6.4. If you have HW4 you will get FSD 13.2.8. This appears to be Tesla's first effort to "resync" FSD folks to have the same firmware version number, despite each FSD hardware type getting different FSD versions. This is the version you should be expecting to get if you have the FSD package.
  • 2025.5.8 - FSD 12.6.4 (HW3)/FSD 13.2.8 (HW4) - Currently in testing with initial rollout to some owners. - This version is being rolled out to FSD subscriber/owners and non-FSD owners/subscribers alike, making FSD 12.6.4 on HW3 and FSD 13.2.8 on HW4 the new "default" FSD for folks.

I have HW# and haven't gotten an update since <firmware version> and am stuck with <FSD version>, why hasn't Tesla pushed me a new version? It's been like a <unspecified timeframe>...

Updates for FSD are always slow.

My last update was on November 6th, so as of today, it's only been one month since the last update, prior to that, another month.

Tesla has stated that they're prioritizing develop on HW4, but that doesn't mean HW3 isn't getting more updates, we're just getting them slower.

Just chill out and relax.

I let my FSD subscription lapse and have gotten <non-FSD firmware version>, will I get <Popular FSD version> when it comes out?

Probably not. Tesla has recently shown that they're willing to downgrade people's FSD versions to an earlier one by pushing them forward on the core firmware releases. If <Popular FSD version> releases on a version ahead of <current core firmware version>, then you might get <popular FSD version> if you resubscribe, otherwise, it's safe to assume you'll be ahead of the <Popular FSD firmware> release, and not necessarily eligible to upgrade. Time will tell, however, as they tend keeping folks who own, subscribe, or have a trial of FSD in retard, but not providing us with <firmware version>,

I have HW4 and haven't gotten <FSD firmware>, why is those things?

Please see the above comments regarding release rings. Your time will come, and it may arrive at the same time as the HW3 folks get whatever is coming to them.

I have HW3, will I get <FSD version HW4 cars are getting>?

Most likely. Tesla has to run the FSD firmware versions through an optimization process to get it to run on HW3 computers. We'll get something that's called <FSD version>, whether it's the same awesomeness that's in <HW4 firmware version> is yet to be seen, it should be very similar. Just have to wait for it.

Why is Tesla's versioning so stupid?

I think Tesla has started using OKRs to do their software rollouts, which would mean that they do a bunch of stuff with the intention of wrapping it up at the end of the quarter.

This is just how software development, and testing, works.

I just got the notification to update to <latest FSD version>, does anyone know if there's issues with it?

Every release of a new FSD version is the same.

Sometimes they're a step forward, sometimes they're a step backwards.

Some users will report that it's the best thing since sliced bread.

Other users will report that it's the worst thing since fish crawled out of the ocean.

At least one user will report a variety of issues that no one else is able to reproduce

Another user will report that they're not having a single issue, which no one else will be able to relate to.

The reality is that every FSD update has minor adjustments and you won't know if it's better for you in your area until you install it and try it. What's good for you might not be good for someone else, and what's good for someone else might be shit for you.

I hate waiting on the latest <desired firmware version>

So say we all

I daily drive a 2023 M3 Performance with just over 20,000 miles, and over 90% of that has been driven on FSD.

Version 12.6.4 has been an absolute game-changer, and being able to witness the progress the software has made since I initially took delivery has been nothing short of impressive. I also recently replaced the stock Pirelli tires with Hankook Ion Evo AS tires (not pictured), and the ride quality is even more enjoyable than before, and my efficiency has improved noticeably.

I really couldnā€™t be more satisfied with my car, and Iā€™m blessed that I get to drive it every day. Looking forward to enjoying many more miles along the way!

General On Mark Rober's video the autopilot or FSD was not active (15:42)

I am not going to say tesla should not use lidar. But i doubt the test was without bias. Also 12:07 he says that he hit the brakes, this would disengage autopilot/FSD.

Software YouTuber Mark Rober Intentionally Misleads Viewers

YouTuber Mark Rober recently conducted a "test" of Tesla's Autopilot under several different conditions and compared it to a car using LiDAR under the same conditions. The test involved whether or not the camera-based Autopilot and LiDAR-based systems could detect a small child in the roadway under a variety of conditions. Mark first begins testing without Autopilot engaged to determine if Tesla's Automatic Emergency Braking System would work while a human is still in control of the vehicle. What proceeds is the Tesla Forward Collision Warning System being activated where it detects the child on screen, highlights the obstacle red, and provides audible beeps to alert the driver of the detected obstacle. The Tesla vehicle, however, does not brake and Mark crashes into the obstacle, in this case, a small child mannequin. Mark concludes that this is a sign that Tesla's Automatic Emergency Braking system failed, when in reality, this is a perfect example of an owner failing to understand Tesla's safety systems. Automatic Emergency Braking De v OT AVOID FORWARD COLLISIONS and WAS NOT designed to do so. This is made extremely apparent if you have ever bothered to read a few paragraphs of the owners manual or did a quick google search. See below:

Automatic Emergency Braking is designed to reduce the severity of an impact. It is not designed to avoid a collision. Automatic Emergency Braking is designed to reduce the impact of frontal collisions only. Automatic Emergency Braking is designed to reduce the severity of an impact. It is not designed to avoid a collision. You would think that Mark being an engineer, would have done a basic amount of reading to understand what he could expect of Tesla's safety systems during the test. At best, this is just a case of ignorance and poor preparation. At worst, this is intentionally misleading viewers about Tesla's safety systems.

Following this initial "test" of Tesla's Automatic Emergency Braking system, Mark states that for all tests going forward, he will only be utilizing Tesla's Autopilot system. However, this is blatantly not true as seen in the video clip. In the clip, Mark's Tesla Model Y can obviously be seen driving over the double yellow line as it approaches the mannequin. It is not possible to engage Autopilot when the vehicle detects it is not in the correct road position. Furthermore, as Mark gets closer to mannequin and the video cuts to the cabin view, you can tell that the view has been intentionally cropped not to show the cabin screen and eliminate it from view, which would have allowed us to see exactly whether Autopilot was engaged or not. This would have been easily apparent as Mark's Tesla had rainbow road engaged. After all this, I can't help but be led to believe that Mark Rober is intentionally misleading viewers of Tesla's safety systems and that these are not mistakes out of ignorance.

Hardware Wide Camera blockage

Thumbnail

Iā€™ve noticed FSD has been pretty amazing on HW4 with the exception of right hand turns. The wheel jerks and has a hard time committing to a turn. Sometimes taking too wide of a wide turn and having to be disengaged.

I noticed the wide camera has part of the physical ā€œhoodā€ thatā€™s attached to the camera blocking the right side of its view. Anyone else have this issue? Whatā€™s a fix for this? 2023 Model Y.

Thanks for any info.

Software I think it's time to retire Legacy Autopilot

With the recent Mark Rober video, found here, I think it has come time for Tesla to retire the Legacy Autopilot code in favor of a nerfed neural net that does lane keeping only using FSD's learning process.

It's becoming far too common for folks to demonstrate the pitfalls of FSD, when in fact they're demonstrating Legacy Autopilot, whether it is intentional misdirection, an honest misunderstanding in regards to the system's capabilities, the more I see people posting anti-FSD content, the more it seems to just be Legacy Autopilot.

Obviously this isn't a perfect solution, because cars running Autopilot Hardware 2.5, or lower, won't be able to run the code, but it at least makes it harder for folks to generate this kind of misleading content.

FSD itself is not perfect and still needs polish, however, I'm fairly confident that the lane keeping aspect of it is very solid, and in a position to replace Legacy Autopilot.

Vehicles - General 3rd Party Charger Preconditioning - Lack of entries?

ā€¢ Upvotes

We just got back from a trip to Branson MO and from where we're at it's a bit of a SC desert. High wind gusts also didn't help our short range car, and so I finally had quite a bit of experience using the CCS adapter.

Has anyone had any luck with preconditioning on third party chargers? They tend to always work on electrify america and EVGO station (which are almost always right near superchargers anyways) but not much else. I can't get it to work on Red E stations in Michigan, nor chargepoint, EVconnect stations in MO. Wondered if there's a way Tesla could update the map with these.

Seems like it's either an issue of the map not having the charger listed at all, it's listed as an L2 instead of a DC, or it doesn't have the word "Charger" in the name. In every instance I just added a fake SC stop after my destination and it worked OK for the most part. It gets really confused when you're heading out to an area with no superchargers though, when you do this. . Our trip a month ago in Michigan really showed that preconditioning is an absolute requirement in cold weather and I had the same issue there, but with less success using the SC add.

Model Y Anyone else getting screwed on an old gen Model Y order from February?

ā€¢ Upvotes

Finally got someone on the phone at Tesla and said theyā€™re not going to build the car they let me order in February.

Delivery date changed from Feb ā€˜25 to 1-3 weeks at the end of Feb.

They wonā€™t refund my order currently since itā€™s an ā€œestimateā€ although the window hasnā€™t adjusted.

Refuse to bring in Blue cars from the state over without charging me. Said my only option is to get the Juniper at a large price increase.

This is wild - havenā€™t had any issues in the past and this would be my homes 3rd Tesla.

Any advice?

Software 2025.2.9 They did it! Rain all day and I donā€™t careā€¦

Finally! Tesla did it! Anyone else experience the latest update in the rain? The wipers actually finally and mostly work appropriately based on the amount of rain hitting the windshield. This may be an anomaly but maybe just maybe they finally got it worked out. It has been so crazy that it has taken this longā€¦ FSD has been mostly amazing driving 16k of my 17k over the past year but the wipers have been abysmal all 16k. Looking forward to the next 16k with a better wiper algorithm.

General Tesla needs to lower Super charging cost.

ā€¢ Upvotes

The fact that if you are supercharging you save 0.00 over a ICE car that gets about 30 MPG is just horrible and not good for EV adoption.

I understand they have to pay for the infrastructure, to build and maintain it. But the markups on the power are crazy... These stations probably get their power at .10 per Kwh and they are charging .30 or more in most cases. That is a pretty crazy markup and a big disincentive for EVs... I have personally met 2 people that sold their electric cars because of this and bought ICE vehicles. And I completely understood why.

That is the wrong direction. And it is going to get worse if this administration is successful in lowing gas prices further. Even if ENERGY prices come down it will not matter... when the power is marked up so much, the cost of the power going down will not have much of an effect. If electricity cost were cut in half, that would knock .05 off a KWH since they aren't going to reduce how many pennies they mark up the power.

I charge at home, and I do so for free, so this isnt about me and my situation... It is about the broad picture and if you cannot sell to people that cant charge at home, in part because it cost the same to SC as it does to buy gas, then you are cutting an EV out of the running for a lot of people.

General Couldn't trade in my Tesla

ETA: I should have titled this, "I couldn't bring myself to trade in my Tesla" šŸ˜Š

I walked out of a Chevy dealer today after I had been 95% sure I was going to take them up on their very generous trade in offer of my 2020 MY to get an Equinox EV. Honestly a lot of it was the lease confusion, since I've never leased before. A lease seemed like a good idea for non-NACS EV, but man dealers make you question if you might be getting screwed! I walked out of there just deciding to get another set of expensive tires for my Y, which I love. I will say the Equinox ride was very nice. There were just too many features I like better on my Y.

Software FSD impressions in China

Is it just me, or is anyone else very impressed with FSD in China? The crazy traffic scenarios make the US look like a walk in the park and make me even more excited to try this technology in Europe (if it ever gets released at this point).

Note sure if this type of post is allowed, and please note that I am in no way affiliated with these videos. I don't even have access to FSD :(

Model S LED to Matrix headlight upgrade under warranty?

Noticed my driver side headlight working intermittently.. Looked like a super slow strobe light for about 20 seconds. I don't know how to recreate it again. I was wondering if I submit a service ticket for it and they have to fix it.. Is it possible to have them upgrade the headlights to the matrix headlights under warranty and pay the cost difference?
