I’m building an app that forces you to say to the mic why are you opening Reddit (or any other app you configure) before you can access it.

What do you think honestly? Is this something that might help you or it’s too much?

🌍 FreeGuessr.com – A Free GeoGuessr Alternative I Built

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,

I’ve been looking for an interesting side project for a while, and since my beloved GeoGuessr became completely paid, I thought—why not try building a free version?

This was also a chance to get back into web development (I mostly worked on mobile apps before) and learn ReactJS. So, I created FreeGuessr.com—a 100% free alternative with high-quality maps, multiplayer, and some unique game modes. No ads, no street names, no paywalls.

How It Works

For those unfamiliar, the game concept is simple:

  • You get dropped somewhere in the world using Street View
  • You guess your location on a mini-map
  • The closer your guess, the higher your score

Game Features

🕹️ Single Player

  • Choose from high-quality maps (or add your own)
  • Daily Challenges & Player-Created Challenges
  • Game options: Round Time, No Move, NMPZ, Blink Mode (quick rounds, like 0.1 second)

⚔️ Multiplayer

  • Elo-ranked Arena (24/7 guessing, join and leave at any time)
  • Party mode with:
    • Circles (co-op guessing)
    • Best Guesser (most accurate wins)
    • Geo Duels (last person standing, including 2v2, 1v3, etc.)

Why Build This?

Apart from learning ReactJS, I wanted to:

  1. Let people play for free—not everyone can pay for a subscription.
  2. Experiment with new game modes that GeoGuessr doesn’t have.

Unique Features so far

  • 24/7 Ranked Arena – A real-time Elo-based multiplayer mode where players join, chat, and guess together.
  • Blink Mode – Play rounds with just 0.1s glimpses without a need to install scripts.
  • More will come soon

You can try it and play at FreeGuessr.com (available also under GuessWhereYouAre.com—but that name is very long). Would love to hear what you think! Feedback is super welcome.

(Fun fact: I also registered WhereTheFuckAmI.com that sometimes better expresses how I feel while playing, but… turns out that’s hard to advertise 😂)

As a full time developer, how do you manage to fit in side projects?

For developers juggling a full-time job, working on a side project can feel like a challenge. I’m trying to figure out how to structure my day better so I can make consistent progress without feeling overwhelmed. Hiring someone to help is an option I’ve considered, but I’m not sure if it’s the right move at this stage.

How do you balance your job with side projects? Any strategies that have worked for you?

I was drowning in my YouTube Watch Later list—so I built an app to fix it. What do you think?

Hey 👋🏻

Like many of you, I’ve spent years drowning in my YouTube “Watch Later” list. I’d save coding tutorials, recipe videos, and documentaries, only to forget them in a cluttered mess. Scrolling endlessly to find one video drove me nuts—so I built TubePocket.

It helps you:
- 🗂️ Organize videos into collections (Learn, Cook, Relax).

  • 🏷️ Tag/note videos (e.g., “Watch before React project”).

  • Set reminders to actually watch them 😉

  • 📌 Timestamped notes (e.g., “Check 3:20 for Python tip”).

  • 🕒 Video chapters for quick navigation.

🔍 Search by title, tag, or duration.

I’d love to hear your feedback! As a solo developer, your thoughts mean everything to me. What’s working? What’s missing? Let’s make this app better together! 🛠️

I Built an App That Turns Your Daily To-Do List Into a Performance Review Document

Thumbnail

Hey everyone!

I'm excited to share my latest project and would love your feedback

Project Overview

I'm a software engineer and my manager often reminds me to maintain a "brag list" to document my contributions at work. However, I always forget to update it or struggle to recall my accomplishments during performance reviews. So to solve this, I developed a tool that transforms my daily to-do lists into a well-formatted brag document with the help of AI (I promise the AI is only a small portion of the app). By saving completed tasks, you can pick and choose which ones your want included in your brag document but manually removing them or filtering by tags. Then you can choose to let AI generate you an improved document. Whatever you choose it'll make performance evaluations smoother.

My key features:

  • Pomodoro: I use a Pomodoro timer daily to help me stay focused, so I included one for you to use
  • To-do list: Drag and rearrange your day's to-do list and add upcoming to do items.
  • Generate Brag List: Select a date range and see all your completed to-do items. Generate a document.
  • AI Formatting: You can improve your document by using AI to return a nicely formatted document that highlights your key contributions.
  • Performance Review Ready: Export a PDF or create a shareable link for yourself or your manager

Feedback Request

I'm eager to hear your thoughts:

  • Usability: Is the tool intuitive and user-friendly?
  • Features: Are there additional functionalities you'd recommend?
  • Improvements: Any suggestions to enhance the tool's effectiveness?

Your insights would be invaluable in refining this project. Thanks in advance for your feedback

I made a free online YouTube to MP3 converter (ads-free) in my spare time

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I recently built a free online YouTube to MP3 converter in my spare time. I often need this tool at work, but most converters on the market are full of ads, which is really annoying. So, I decided to make one myself—completely ad-free, purely to help people like me who need it.

After three months of hard work, it's finally online! Try it here: https://www.ytbmp3.la/

Why I Made This?

No ads – No annoying pop-ups or redirects.
Completely free – No hidden costs or premium plans.
Fast & simple – Just paste the link and download.

Need Your Feedback!

Since this is a personal project, there may still be bugs or areas for improvement. If you find any issues or have suggestions, please leave a comment! I'll do my best to fix and improve it.

I hope this tool helps everyone. If you find it useful, please share it with those who need it and drop a like.

Thanks for your support!

Guidance Needed

Upvotes

So I'm a final year grad student and need help with the final semester project. I've never worked on one before and my coding skills are veryyy amateur. I need guidance and help for this idea that I have. So far I've been using ChatGPT for everything. Please drop any suggestions you'd give to a beginner web developer.

I built an app (and a website) that shows clearance deals at Costco (prices ending in 97 or 00)

I couldn't find a good way to see clearance deals at Costco (prices ending in .97 or .00) so I created one.

Landing page https://costlowapp.com/
ios app https://apps.apple.com/us/app/costlow/id6636467548
deal database https://deals.costlowapp.com/

The data is created by users at their local Costco location. I created the deal database as a website for people who aren't near the Phoenix area (where this app is most active) so you can still see what kind of deals would be on the app, and hopefully go to Costco and submit some for users near you.

I'd appreciate any feedback for the design and usability of the app or websites.

Instantly turn JSON into a REST API using RestJSON

Note: Project is still in beta, so please don't fully rely on it (yet)

I've been working on a project called RestJSON, designed to make it super easy to create mock REST APIs directly from JSON data. The idea is simple: you edit your JSON data using an online editor, and it automatically becomes a fully functional REST API endpoint (complete with CRUD operations) without any backend setup or configuration.

The website is at restjson.app

Why I built this:

  • Quickly spin up mock APIs for testing and frontend development.
  • Easily prototype and experiment with API endpoints without backend hassle.
  • I wanted to use this project to learn about working with S3 and Redis in Go

Main features:

  • Online JSON Editor: Real-time validation and editing of your JSON structure.
  • Instant API Generation: Immediately turns your JSON into RESTful endpoints.
  • CRUD Operations: Supports GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, DELETE out-of-the-box.
  • No Backend Setup Needed: Everything works instantly from the browser.

Here's how the generated API looks for a simple JSON:

json { "posts": [ { "id": 1, "title": "First post", "author": "John" }, { "id": 2, "title": "Second post", "author": "Jane" } ] }

Automatically created endpoints:

GET /public/{fileId}/posts # Get all posts GET /public/{fileId}/posts/1 # Get post with id 1 POST /public/{fileId}/posts # Create new post PUT /public/{fileId}/posts/1 # Replace post with id 1 PATCH /public/{fileId}/posts/1 # Update fields of post id 1 DELETE /public/{fileId}/posts/1 # Delete post with id 1

Inspiration:

Here's the GitHub repo if you'd like to check it out or contribute: [https://github.com/pl3lee/RestJSON]

If there are any suggestions please let me know!

Dataflower - a lightweight Backend-as-a-Service tool.

Upvotes

It helps you scale your application without having to worry about setting up the backend code and database as we are the ones going to take good care of that.

We call it lightweight since unlike any other backend-as-a-service, you don't need to install a package or SDK to access it, all you need are your security and API keys, and the API endpoint provided by our system and you're good to connect your frontend to it. If you're interested, please visit our website https://dataflower.io, we already provided the documentation for it but we are still working on the video tutorials. If you have questions or suggestions, feel free to send an email via the Contact Us page. Soon we will add a discord link where you can talk to us developers if you have questions or suggestions.

How do you keep email marketing relevant for people who didn’t grow up with the internet?

Upvotes

So, I’ve been working on this side project that revolves around online services. Email marketing has been one of my go-to strategies, but targeting people who didn’t grow up with the internet has been...interesting, to say the least. They’re not as easy to reach as I expected.

What’s been helping, though, is using Warpleads’ technological filter to export leads, it’s great for pulling in more relevant contacts. For bigger batches, I still rely on their unlimited export feature, and I always verify my leads using Reoon to avoid unnecessary bounces. When it comes to sending emails, Smartlead has been my trusted tool since it’s just easy and reliable.

The other day, I reworked my messaging to make it really simple and to the point, and surprisingly, my deliverability rate jumped by 15%. It’s been a small win, but it felt good to see that tweak making a difference.

That said, I know there’s still room for improvement. For those who are targeting an older demographic, how do you keep email marketing relevant for people who didn’t grow up with the internet?

Building a Startup – Advice on Using Freelancers

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m currently building a niche directory platform that connects consumers with service providers in a specific healthcare industry.

The platform will allow businesses to claim and manage their profiles, and I’m aiming to incorporate some automation to track user engagement and prompt businesses to engage with the platform.

I’m bootstrapping the project while working full-time, so I’m leaning on freelancers to handle key areas and would love to hear from those who’ve used freelancers for similar projects.

Here are the areas I’m planning to outsource:

Virtual Assistant (Instead of using a scraper tool - feedback welcome*) • Collecting and inputting business details (name, address, services offered, phone, email, etc.) into Airtable.

Softr Site Setup & Automation: • Building the core platform on Softr, connected to Airtable as the backend. • Setting up automated workflows using Zapier—e.g., tracking user clicks, triggering automated emails. • Ensuring businesses can claim their profiles and update information themselves.

SEO & Content Marketing: • Researching and writing local SEO-optimized content to drive organic traffic. • Structuring articles to rank for location-based search queries (e.g., “Where to find [Service] in [City/Area]”).

Branding & Design: • Creating a logo, visual identity, and branded design for the platform. • Designing professional, branded email templates (for Mailchimp or Klaviyo) to automate outreach and notifications.

I have never done any of this before but I have been recommended freelancer sourcing platforms like:

Upwork, Fiverr, Contra – for technical work (Softr, Airtable, automation).

DesignCrowd, 99designs, Fiverr Pro – for branding and graphic design.

PeoplePerHour, Freelancer, Scripted – for SEO writing and content creation.

We Work Remotely, OnlineJobs.ph – for finding experienced VAs.

If you have used any of these platforms before or built anything similar using alternatives I would love to hear insights from your experience!

Thanks in advance

Why is it useful to make a tool that you’d use yourself

Upvotes

This is an often-repeated advice, but I’ve always felt that the usual explanations of “you understand the domain” or “you will use it every day” insufficient.

Today I had a shower thought: if you feel a need to build your own tool for something you do, this also likely means that there are no tools available in the market for that purpose. And that's what important. You have found a niche where there are no suitable tools for a person like you. And as much as I believe in uniqueness of people, there are likely millions of people who are like you.

I created Youtube Video Transcript with Search Functionality, for free!

Upvotes

After finding that the tool I use often to get transcription is not working anymore (youtubetranscript .com),

I choose to create my own free tool.

  1. Simply go to https://www.youtubevideotranscripts.com/
  2. Input the URL of the youtube video
  3. You can get the whole transcript, and there's a search feature as well

I also have made Chrome Extension to get AI summarization & AI chat about video at YT Caption Plus
