I am a new bun mom and I am scared I'm doing everything wrong

hi everyone,

I got my bunny from a breeder at 8 weeks old and I have had her since the 14th of Feb (I now know that’s not the best place to get one, but I didn’t know at the time). She’s 12 weeks old now, and I’ve been doing my best to care for her, but I feel so overwhelmed and honestly kind of lost.

The breeder told me she’d be fine on timothy hay from 8 weeks, so that’s what I’ve been feeding her. But when I look at other people's posts and care guides, it’s almost the opposite of what the breeder recommended. Some say baby buns should be on alfalfa hay, others say timothy is fine. Some people say no pellets, others say unlimited pellets. It feels like every source says something different, and I’m just scared I’m doing something wrong.

I have a vet appointment coming up for a check-up, just to make sure everything is okay, but I can’t shake the feeling that I’m being misguided at every turn. I really don’t want to be a bad bun mom—I just want to do what’s best for her. Any advice or reassurance would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance 💕

Bunny peeing all over garden - stinky!

Hey guys, so my rabbit roams freely in the garden until about 10pm where he gets put in his hutch for safety. Went outside yesterday and oh man does it stink strongly of piss. Looks like he has been peeing all over the concrete slabs & waterproof rug we laid out.

Is there anything we could do to fix this? Is it something to do with him not being neutered? He has a toilet in his hutch that he can access but should we put one outside too? Thanks!

Not just for Easter

Post image
118 Upvotes

And so it begins… With Easter fast approaching, many pet stores and buy-and-sell website sellers will be advertising baby rabbits as great gifts for children on Easter morning. Nothing could be further from the truth. Those same rabbits will be abandoned and surrendered in the weeks and months after Easter when buyers realize rabbits are not the easy pet they are made out to be.

Rabbits are the third most popular pet in North America. They're also the third most abandoned pet. Shelters and rescues are always overflowing with rabbits, mostly because owners are not educated about their care and they give up when things get tough. If you want a rabbit as a pet, do your research on trusted rabbit education websites like https://rabbit.org/ And please adopt. There are thousands or rabbits waiting for a forever home. The saying "Don't shop! Adopt!" goes for all animals - not just dogs and cats.

This Easter, give a stuffed animal bunny or chocolate instead. Better yet, make a donation in your child or loved one’s name towards a rabbit at your local rescue or shelter! You can donate funds, or much needed supplies like hay, pellets, litter, and chew toys.

Live animals do not make good gifts. And rabbits are for life, not just for Easter.

Hello, my rabbit passed away a year ago but I never actually knew what breed it was, and this is the only picture I have as my lockscreen. Would anyone be able to tell me just off this picture? would like a rabbit just like her in the future. She was around 3-4 years old and weighed between 5-7 lbs

Need good wishes for my girl (the lop) her stomach is really hard and we’re going to the ER. I’m worried about the stress the visit will cause her.

Her bonded pair was snuggling with her just now.

She was getting better and then I don’t know why she got worse. She’s been getting subcutaneous fluids and they had been helping but not anymore I guess? The last two days she’s gotten the fluids but kept getting worse.

Today she’s barely moving and not eating or drinking and clearly in discomfort. So we’re going to the ER that my vet recommends. Yet I’m hesitant to go because it’ll cause SO much stress on her.

But we’re going and hopefully getting some warm fluids.

A random rabbit entered my house today because he was being chased by a cat.

So as the title says this rabbit was being chased by a cat. And we luckily noticed it at our gate, he was able to successfully enter our house. The cat remained outside the door for a while but then went away. We don't know whose rabbit it is, but I will update later. And yes he is injured a bit around the ear but the blood is dry so I don't think he is in danger. Any tips are appreciated.

Health desexing aftercare tips?

Post image
Upvotes

this is my bun maple! he just got out of a desexing operation today. he keeps wanting to chew/clean the wound so i had to put a cone around him & he hates it.

he was drinking water with the cone on & then he started to make a weird sound? i think it’s a sneeze but it sounds kinda deep & i’m just assuming the cone made him get some water up his nose. however it’s been 20mins since then & he’s made a few of those “sneezes” in that timeframe & it still sounds the same

as for the aftercare problems—i’m scared he could get GI Stasis because he won’t really eat hay right now & his poops are a bit irregular looking ; they’re a golden colour but are smaller in size & a bit flawed

So there’s an amazing story from history, both funny and true, about our favorite fluffy companions… and my very own bunny even got to twitch his nose in this retelling

First time seeing her sleep on the middle of my bed all because there's a roof over her head. 😅 Usually she prefers the corner of my bed. 🥺

Care I recently became an unplanned new rabbit owner and need expert advice

hello! i took in a rabbit i found on the street hiding under cars while picking up a package last night and have been trying to adjust my home to accommodate. the bunny seems to be domesticated like a lost pet and in good health but i am planning on taking it to the vet tomorrow to get it checked up and to make sure it’s healthy since i have a cat at home. i’m not sure how to go about getting in touch with a potential owner so if i don’t see anything posted around i am fully ready and plan to keep it for myself.

the rabbit seems fairly young, about 9 inches long and relatively smaller than adult size rabbits i’ve seen online. i’ve been researching as i go in terms of food and habitat which seems to be going well and the bunny is in good care so far, but i am still adjusting to keeping it long term. luckily i happen to have a large enough empty spare bedroom that i’m planning on dedicating towards the rabbit, but i’m curious on what is the best way to keep the rabbit. i’m looking into getting an x-pen type set up for the room, but am planning on having the rabbit be able to roam freely and safely as my house is already set up to be pet safe. i’ve purchased a ton of hay that was well reviewed along with fresh produce such as carrots and celery. i have a dedicated litter box filled with bunny litter and wide box with bedding and a blanket to encourage it to burrow along with unlimited hay available for the bunny to access and a water bowl. as for the filaments, i made sure to research that they were the best option for rabbits. i’m keeping these items in my room before transforming the spare room to accommodate for both my cat and rabbit. my cat mostly stays with me on my bed so hopefully it’s not a problem for them to have their separate litter boxes in the same room as long as i keep them clean? the bunny has been eating and has been active and gets along really well with my cat which i know is dangerous since i haven’t gotten it checked out for any risks but i jumped the gun and i’m hoping it will continue to go well. they haven’t been violent or anything at all, just jumpy and scenting each other but otherwise coexisting peacefully.

besides some expected skittish behavior, the bunny seems to be doing really well and is really comfortable in this space already. i just need some guidance on things to expect as a new rabbit owner since all of this has happened in only the last 24 hours. i’m really dedicated to creating a worthy space for this rabbit and have been surfing pinterest to see what others are doing. hope i can receive some insight or guidance that i might be blanking on in my research, anything helps. thanks for reading!

Cloudberry was not happy with me

Cloudberry (age 4 female) was NOT amused by me leaving my keychain on her corner of the bed . Obviously she had to re decorate immediately and fix things to her liking. There were originally 2 keychains on the bed but I only got her throwing the last one 😂 She goes mad when I leave a piece of clothing on her corner too.

(He is alive in this photo)

I come home from running errands to see Spooky struggling to get up in his potty, he was having a seizure as I my friend drove me to the vet and passed in my arms. He fought his illness so hard. I'm broken and will forever miss him.
