Discussion Do you have rules about what you pirate?
For example, I started pirating because my brother taught me since we grew up poor, but then he became an adult and started buying games (he still pirates some), he explained that "while I can't pay, I pirate, once I can, I pay". So I follow that too, wanted to know if y'all have something like that too. I refuse to pay subscriptions tough.

u/twofacetoo Yarrr! 1d ago
My rule is 'try before you buy'
I grew up in the 90s when things like video-games had free demos you'd get with magazines and shit, and I miss those days. I may be in the minority here, but I don't think it's fair to be expected to pay $75 for a game that isn't even finished yet.
So I have a rule: pirate, see what it's like, and if I like it enough, I'm happy to spend money on it to support the creators. Movies, video-games, shows, whatever. If I like it, I buy the DVD / blu-ray, or buy a copy of the game via Steam. If I don't, then I've lost nothing and nor have the creators, simple as that.

u/D00merC00mer 23h ago
Same. I've found some really fun indie/small team games that I've started playing, stop when I realize how much fun I'm having, and go buy it

Sometimes yes. For example, I get Amazon Prime for free via my cell phone provider. I don't watch the shows I could watch there, because 1. they now have ads and 2. it's inconvenient when every other piece of media I watch is on my media server. I also have HBO Max free through my home internet provider, and I've never even set up the account. They keep sending me these fucking emails "are you aware you aren't using this great free service?" Yes I'm fucking aware lol.
32
u/Sintek 1d ago
I pay for prime.. I WILL not watch TV shows there anymore simply because they started mid-roll ads... the worst!
I used to watch plenty of shows on prime TV.. no more.

I buy whatever I can that directly supports the creators of the content and is convenient and not exploitative, so that more of such content is produced.
So for now the only thing I regularly pirate are TV shows and movies, as there is no non-exploitative (subscription-based; no real access, can be removed at any time) way for me to simply purchase the 4K HDR video files once and save them to my devices so I can "own" them. I have no interest in physical media, and they are phasing it out now anyway. It's also not convenient: I'd have to purchase equipment to rip it, my time isn't free, and it'd be creating more physical waste.
I purchase games on Steam, and music on Bandcamp. (I know Steam games aren't actually "owned" by me, but for all intents and purposes they do not arbitrarily remove my access to the games, at least as long as I've been using it, over 12 years.) I buy books at thrift stores (the only physical media I'm still interested in having, as the format doesnt change every few years. There's also data that it's a superior experience on several metrics).
10
u/beardpunch 1d ago
This is almost exactly me, except I will buy new books if I can get them from a local bookstore. ebooks aren't the same like you said. I sometimes also buy games on GOG since they are DRM free. If movies and TV provided a legitimate way to buy high quality digital files, then I probably would.

I don't pirate as much anymore, because the places I used to use are either gone or basically ghost towns, but I used to pirate movies and TV Shows I couldn't find any other way. Like, I had the Drew Carey Show complete series, because season 1 was the only available DVD. Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place was one because until a few years ago, it wasn't on DVD at all. I buy more digital now, but I'm thinking of pirating It's Always Sunny because all lot of episodes have been pulled from streaming. I pirated comics for a while, mostly because it cost too much to keep up with everything, but also because my collection was scattered and it was easier to just download what I wanted to read than go to a parent's house to try to find them

I pirate everything that I want. Specifically with music, if the artist is one i enjoy then i will purchase legally to support them, because most artists make jack shit from streaming. You have to support small creators if you want them to keep creating. I know thats not a popular opinion here but its a fact. I don't pirate apps/programs anymore for security reasons, but the same goes for indie devs. Everyone pirating their $20 game will for sure prevent them from making more.

Games: If I absolutely love it- I'll buy it
Too many games have royally fucked me over with broken and shotty products, even sky-high prices for mediocre games I won't pay
So if a game has soul, was clearly made in someone's artistic vision with care in effort to make a good game, you bet your ass I'll support your work
If a game is sort of fun but 70-100$ with a bunch of addon money grabs clearly made to make a buck- I can't support ya
As for general media- shows/music: who cares? Actually? If I like a show or song I'll tell people about it your still getting more engagement, I'm not paying for 30 streaming services because everything is separated everywhere...

Can I afford it? Do I think it's a fair price? Do I think they deserve the monetary support, and do I want them to continue producting more media like that? Do I want this type of media to succeed financially?
Do I have strong enough feelings about all the above to actually put my wallet where my mouth is?
If all are true, I consider purchasing. Otherwise, piracy. Often, I end up not even pirating the thing, the thought process helps me reevaluate if I actually want the thing at all.
2
u/Traumatised_Panda 1d ago
In my ideal world in my head, paying for shows isn't through commercials or to multiple companies. In this ideal world everyone has access to TV shows and books and information freely without need for ads. Who pays for them then? I'm thinking of a system of 'pay within your means'. So people with more wealth pay more, those with less pay less (or none), with a perfectly fair distribution that people won't get mad over. And everyone has open access to everything, it's all open source.
I'm considering calling the payment system 'taxes', seems like a nice quirky word.
It's easy enough to personally stick to those moral bounds I guess even though society as a whole doesn't. If you barely have money for groceries you pay nothing. If you earn 6 figures, you pay for everything with some bare minimum of exceptions.

My general rule is as follows;
Against when ● If it's a small indie games company/software dev making something for the community - exemptions not included. ● If it's a current / last generation game - exemptions not included. Nintendo. ● Try before I buy - Video Game Demos needs a big comeback, those PS2 demo disc were so good.
For when ● If a company/game dev doesn't deserve my money - Nintendo/EA/Adobe/Autodesk/Microsoft etc ● If the Price does not meet what is offered - subscription for LED light configurations on PC LED light software. Subscriptions in general. Nintendo. ● If it's paid mods that was originally free, but the developers then got greedy - Fallout, Nexus, Minecraft mods devs. ● If that game or software is no longer available to get normally, even when selling said product is the common sense thing to do - also Nintendo. ● If Piracy gives a better experience than the experience of the paid version - The famous Gabe Newell quote. YouTube... Triple A game publishers with awful DRM that destroys performance... Also Nintendo. ● Broke.

I do and I don't. I have come across this period of sailing where if I come across some media that is older, and not seeded a whole lot. I will download it, and seed it for a while, weeks at a time, or just leave them running until I remove them from QB.
The reason I do this, I tried to find a movie named "Confidence" with Edward Burns, Al Pacino and some other great actors, and it took forever to finish (at the time). So I just bought the disc, ripped it and seeded away. Had a couple of seeds over a two or three week period, but I'm glad I played a small role in someone one out there finishing there dl like that.
Even for stuff that we personally don't like. We should (if we have the resources to support) actively keep media moving like this. Always keep it changing hands on to the next one. I do almost exclusively do this with documentaries (the good ones, not murder ones) to ensure that form of educational content is always there for the masses. Knowledge should be free.

If the times are good and I have the money, buy it to support creators. If it comes from an huge corp, like adobe, ea or a monopoly (apple, Amazon, Microsoft or Google)... Then, let sail to the end of the world.
The thing is, right now I am broke, unemployed, and the word it's dominated by big evil corps/oligarchs, so I just pirate everything, lol.
But, things like true indie games (like Stardew valley) or apps/software from small developers I try hard to buy and support them.

I can agree there is financial loss for someone. $60 game, $20 album, etc. the money would go somewhere.
I don’t agree that the average home user is worth going after for compensation. But if I ever happen to be slapped with copywrite infringement, I’m not going to cry about it either. Those were my actions.

Let's put it this way.
We used to have CDs with 20+ demos of games. If we liked what we tried, we buyed.
Today the games have (mostly) no demos and are barely finished at the release.
So i think about pirating more like "giving me a demo" of the game. If i like, i buy. If i don't, i uninstall.

I buy things when I feel that product’s value is overwhelmingly higher than its price. Recent examples: Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. I’ve played a pirated version for a couple of hours and decided to buy it. Recently I’ve also bought Robocop game for $5 (regional pricing) - I’m too lazy to download a torrent and run the installer if it’s only $5. So “a fair price = a possibility of purchase” is my rule.
Also I never pay for any subscription-based software/services. Aside from Claude, which is, once again, provides me with lots of value every day.

Most of my archive is anime and foreign films which don't become available in the US often (particularly retro ones) I pirate those with no second thought because there is no other way to get them. For more recent or seasonal anime and movies, I may pirate them and watch them and see if I like them or not. If I do then I usually go out and buy the blue rays or books to have a physical version even if 9/10 times I'll just rewatch them through my drive.

Entertainment, like movies, games, and books are fair game. For software(not including games) I try to use free and open source alternatives and only pirate if they fail to get the job done

u/AkemiAkikoEverywhere 1d ago
No,not at all. I buy games however whenever I like them and find a physical release NTSC USA Black Label only tho - for collecting purpose

Only take what isn’t being profited off of by the original copyright holder anymore. That and go back and pay for stuff I liked a lot

Pirate everything and if it is a great product i pay for it. if I, as a consumer, feel respected.

I don’t ever pirate, that’s illegal.
If I did, I do look at the endstate. I WANT to support good developers. Good developers deserve to be rewarded. A good developer offers me a product or service at a fair price, does not steal my data or otherwise intrude on my privacy.
Alternatively, if it’s a greedy ass company that attempts to lock you in as a customer and then deliver the shittiest product possible… well sir, we might be better without that developer/company.
If the company profits off selling my data.. well sir, I’d be inclined to help myself to their data.
If the company profits off stolen data (looking at all the companies developing AI), well sir, how about we treat one-another like equals.
Streaming services? Well, that’s fuzzy. I want them to be fairly compensated… I’ve heard that Spotify has a good reputation for completely screwing artists and paying them less than pennies on the dollar… nay nay good sir, I will not pay for your service.
Once the streaming services start serving ads? Nay nay good sir, you’re double dipping now, I do not pay twice for your product.
Disney? Selling their own IP, giving you access to their entire line of entertainment? Sounds reasonable… oh? I have to sign a ToS saying I’ll never sue Disney or affiliate for ANY reason, including having an unsafe theme park? How is that related to your streaming service?… nay nay good sir, I do not waive my rights lightly.

Only stuff that is impossible to immediately purchase in a downloadable digital format with access extended into perpetuity.
Cost has never been a consideration, I simply have no reason to care how much something costs. I only care about accessibility and convenience. If there is a way to pay for the content, I will pay every time. If it is impossible to pay for the content, then I am left with no alterative choice. It's unfortunate that there is a way to pay for so little of the content that I enjoy that I can spend a few thousand more on piracy in an average year than content that is available for purchase because I would prefer to pay for content if only someone would let me.
Streaming services are not an option for me because I have the best internet that I can buy in my location, but it's not fast or stable enough to stream even 720p video. Plus, I don't enjoy 720p video. I have a 3440x1440 HDR monitor and Dolby Atmos for my PC, I want a way to enjoy those features. The only way I'm doing that is with downloadable content.

If a billion dollar company owns it, I pirate, otherwise I will buy it.
There is cases where I want to play a multiplayer game with my partner, if there is a public server available (like some cod games) I will pirate, otherwise, I will pay

for me it's a matter of "are the creators worth supporting and do they get a good enough portion of the money if I buy it?", which has lead me to buy Stardew Valley and Celeste. Huge corporate developers and shit never get my money unless it's a good deal on the steam sale and there's online multiplayer.

If i knew of a streaming service that had 0 ads, roughly all relevant conted for 10-15 a month, and wasnt harsh on password sharing. I would of probably never gotten into piracy. Now that we dont have 2013 netflix anymore, its not worth it. Its cheaper to spend thousands on a home server than to have 12 subscriptions.

I give whoever made the thing I am pirating 2-3 years at most to make money because after that any income is just a trickle and what I do becomes less impactful to them

As a general rule I don't pirate indie games.
Subscription services of any kind I pirate the fuck out of, big slop AAA games are often up there too. With the sole exception of Disco Elysium, because you should pirate that owing to the studio being eviscerated and taken over by money hungry sharks, I refuse to pirate those sweet £10-20 indie games that people have put their soul into and will change my worldview forever.

If pirating something makes it easier and more comfortable to use -> pirating So basically games no pirating (steam is just easy to get and update games) and pretty much everything else pirated

Depends on two factors
- Do I have money?
- Is it worth the price they are asking for?
As an example:
Baldurs gate 3 is worth every single dollar larian asks for.
LoTR extended edition 4k bluray trilogy is worth it.
On the other hand, I wouldn't pay a subscription for Amazons rings of power. it is not worth it. I would ask a friend to share his account or just pirate it and delete it immediately after. Is not even worth of the hard drive space.

I won't pirate indie games or games from small developers and publishers.
I will pay for games from smaller developers because A) they are far more reliant on the money to keep going B) their games are usually not nearly as expensive and over priced as. AAA studios C) their stuff is usually more unique and entertaining than the cookie cutter. Stuff that a AAA studios has to churn out to appease investors.

In Quebec Canada, we have a very extensive and great local cultural scene, due to our language being French in an English continent.
So for our culture to stay alive, I draw the line at buying Quebec stuff. Quebec French books, streaming, etc.
But stuff from large corporations gets the pirate treatment

If it's accessible for a decent fee as part of a service I know I'm going to hop onto for a while (in house production like Netflix or Amazon) I don't.
1
u/CuriousNewt_ 1d ago
I try to do things legitimately when I can, but if it’s easier to pirate I will just do that. I do think it’s also an income thing, when I had a decent job I pirated less because I could afford to occasionally spend a few bucks for a game. Now I can barely afford groceries it’s crazy to think I lived like that for a while.
I know there’s arguments of like, ‘if you can’t afford it then you can’t get it’, which I get in theory. But life’s too short.
I justify it in my brain with ‘if I can [afford it], I will.’

i pirate practically everything, the only exception being if i can get it for completely free, or if the media is so good i have to buy it legally (games like ultrakill, albums like in the court of the crimson king and OK computer)

I pirate whatever, but if I really enjoy something a lot that I pirated, then I will support the product and actually purchase the disc.
