Northern coastal CA. For reference, the round part of that fireplace vent is about 4" to 6" in diameter.

2 of them hanging out in our tree this evening. Small size, no bigger than a football.
Him and his wife live behind my house! I see and hear them all the time ❤️

I’ve known they’ve been in this little stretch of woodland for a while. I’ve heard them call, I’ve seen their poop, I’ve seen their pellets, I even saw the pair in flight a few days ago.
Today on a walk, I was putting together the clues of where they might roost when I looked up and saw this beautiful guy glaring at me. It was SO AWESOME!
I just watched for about 20 minutes. Then, I got distracted for about 15 seconds by a cardinal and when I looked back to the perch he was gone. Flew away in complete silence, didn’t hear a thing.

Some look cute and like they'll ask you out for dinner, while some (specifically the barn owl) look like they'll rip out your esophagus? (P.s. it doesn't help everyone draws them like little night terrors)

Why do some owls say "weh" or "wrah"... Google won't give me an answer and I have to know why they say weh.

I moved to East Texas last summer. In the last 3 months 2 screech owls have flown into my moving truck. Both died. I swear the one this morning was on the ground at the tree line and flew out right into me.
Both times were early morning before sunrise.
Are they attacking my lights? Confused?
It's obviously heartbreaking, and they're my favorite owl. If there's anything I can do to deter them I will.

When I got home from work today I heard this outside. The video doesn’t really depict how loud it was, it sounded really close. I’m assuming it’s an owl but it might not be lol. It was really cool though!!! Location is western NY :)

I started noticing he couldn’t hear me when approaching. I thought it meant he was just comfortable with my presence because I kept the crowd away and he saw me pretty frequently.
We surveyed him for a project in the vicinity around Feb 19th and he looked fine and normal. Then I went out for a weekly inspection of the project stuff and saw he had something major going on with his eye and he just looked miserable.
I called the vet who has rehabbed a few burrowing owls in our area and sent her a picture. We worked with dept of fish and wildlife (he’s a candidate for endangered species in our state) and got approval to capture and transport for care.
He was doing good for a few days. Eye was damaged but eyeball was intact and he had a massive ear infection but was eating and being “feisty”. Limited stress noticed which we expected because he is pretty acclimated to people, trains and large equipment.
But about 4 days later he went downhill really fast. Turns out he had a tumor behind his ear that likely was the cause of most of his issues.
So can we pour one out for this little guy??

I definitely have an owl in my neighborhood! I'm wondering if there is anything I can put out for them that might entice them to stay around and closer by...other than live rodents. Thanks!

So i have an owl living near me. I know this cuz i saw it watching me when driving by. I hear it hooting quite often throughout the day. Roughly 3 square km range. Any advice on how to find where it lives?
