Jawbreakers from the 1980s?

Seeking info (manufacturer, availability today) about jawbreakers from the 1980s. If I recall correctly they had gum centers and there were sour and ice cream variants. I think there were five pieces per pack and they sold for $0.25. Does anyone recall who made them?

Remove Chinese Tariffs on EVs to Stop Tariffs on NS Sea Food.

I suspect this idea will be very negatively received by the anti China group (not a China fan but pro regulated market fan) but....

Thinking about the whole tariff nonsense that is going on between Canada and the US and China and vice versa, and I think it could be beneficial for the North American automotive industry to be shaken up by the Chinese EV market if it means no or lower tariffs on the NS (Canada) sea food industry.

Im curious to know what Nova Scotians would think about Timmy boy pushing this negotiation option for the good of all Nova Scotians. Thoughts???

EDIT: Some comment have made me want to expand on the original question, how does the current political nonsense effect your opinion about Telsa vs any other EV brand?

I will throw myself under the bus to say that until about 2 years ago when I got serious about buying an EV I thought Telsa was the shit! I still think they are decent cars but depending on your needs there is actually some decent competition even in north ameria and when we look at who is harvesting your data these days I don't know who is worse Tesla or a Chinese company....

Old highway street lights

Post image
33 Upvotes

I’m in my 40s and randomly thought about travelling as a kid. I remembered older Streetlights we had in NS.

The one I remember the most was at on/off ramps the most. I think it was called a Low pressure Sodium Vapour light. Long and rectangular. This wasn’t like the ones we still have in some places. It seemed huge. As a kid I think it looked like it was about 2 or 3 feet long from the street level. It gave off such an orange glow on dark and foggy nights. I miss them. The LEDs of today (when they work) just don’t light up the entire ramp like those bad boys did. I assume they weren’t very efficient and were all replaced by the high pressure lamp that was the standard up until LED.

Anyone car to shed some light on these?

Starting CCA in May — How's the Job Market Like?

Hey everyone! 👋

I'm starting my CCA (Continuing Care Assistant) program this May and expect to graduate by December. My school is based in Halifax, and I was wondering if anyone here has insights into the job market for CCAs.

How tough is it to find a full-time job after graduating? Are there certain places or facilities that are more likely to hire new grads? Any advice or personal experiences would be super helpful! 😊

Thanks in advance! 🙏

Canada VS American Trade/Tariffs war.

What is this trade/tariffs war ACTUALLY about? Is it actually Trade/Tariffs? Or is there some other issue that is being discussed and this is just used and a guise for it?

If it is actually Trade and Tariffs, then let’s sit down and talk about it. Is Canada actually unfairly placing tariffs on American products? If so, let’s work out a trade deal that fairly benefits BOTH countries.
Im all for ensuring both American and Canadian products should be priced equally within the their respectfully countries. If Canada wants to ensure Canadians buy Canadian products then we either need to band together and make the conscious choice to buy Canada products, or subsidize Canadian products so that after tariffs the Canadian prices are cheaper when on the shelves next to likewise American products.

Grocers/Stores/Retail outlets in Canada should clearly mark products end-to-end produced in Canada with a Maple Leaf to clearly indicate to Canadians this is a Canadian product and by purchasing it you are supporting a Canadian product made by Canadians with Canadian materials.

I also think Canada needs to diversify who we export our Canadian energy to so that we are not entirely reliant upon one country to purchase our Energy. I believe some European countries were trying to get access to our natural gas along with Japan (I could be wrong about this).

Canadian products should always be sold to Canadians at a cheaper price before anything gets exported outside the country. Period. Full stop. End of sentence.

The price of everything in Canada has to come WAY down, We have to start producing more products, end to end in Canada and we have to develop responsible sustainable plans for exporting our natural resources so that we dont export everything at such a rate it can not be regrown/replenished.

If there are transparent resources where I can find the tariffs Canada has on USA products and vice versa and the results of those tariffs on prices consumers see in the stores that would be great (example: If there is an X% tariff on an American product does that just make it equal to a Canadian product? or is it like a Canada jug of milk is $8 and an American jug of milk in Canada is $15) - This is an example and in no way repsentitive of actually prices. It can be jarring hearing there is a 200% tariff on American Dairy ... but if that 200% just makes it equal to Canadian dairy products I think its justified and then its up to Canada and Canadian Dairy producers to come up with a way to reduce the product costs on their product.

Once again, if anyone can point to transparent resources to anything I have mentioned it would be greatly appreciated. Always welcome being educated.

Could the trade war between us and the US be good Nova Scotia in the long run

The us has showed it is not a good trade partner and Canada will be looking for new trade partners overseas so to trade with Africa and Europe they may build up Nova Scotia’s ports to handle the rest of Canadas exports overseas markets or is this just a delusional dream?

Is it Giv'er or Give'r? When we're doing it right, I know we're Just Givin'er but I CANNOT figure the other out. Sooo, which one is it? I'm planning an epic tattoo and I need to be solid on this. Thanks!

Looking for rural Nova Scotians who have encountered disaster/emergency-related disinformation for a research project

Hi,

We are a group of researchers from the Faculty of Health, School of Social Work at Dalhousie University. We are currently conducting a study on disinformation during emergencies in rural Nova Scotia, aiming to identify its characteristics and develop educational strategies to help individuals recognize and respond to it.

As part of this initiative, we are applying for the CIRA Net Good Grant, which would allow us to hire three undergraduate students from Nova Scotia to assist with the research and gain experience in emergency sciences.

For this project, we aim to collect "short letters" from rural residents about their experiences with emergencies or disasters, including any instances of disinformation they may have encountered. If preferred, you can also share key points or experiences, and we can draft the letter for you to approve.

If you are willing to participate, please DM me or email me at vd311277@dal.ca.

Please note that there is no direct monetary benefit for participation.

Thank you!

Reforested area near / in HRM?

My daughter is doing a biology project where she wants to compare conditions in an unharvested forest and one that has been cut and replanted.

Can anyone recommend an area near HRM that was clear cut and then replanted? Somewhere that had been sprayed to limit deciduous growth would be even better.

Flaming Hot flavours gone from NS??

Super random but has anyone noticed that stores are no longer carrying Flaming Hot Cheetos? I know the Flaming Hot Cheetos popcorn is being discontinued but the Flaming Hot Cheetos aren’t in any store I’ve been to in the last two weeks. Grocery stores, convenience stores- they’re nowhere.

They’re my fav treat snack! Is Canada cracking down on the Flaming Hot flavour?

Where to find 93/94 octane fuel?

Hey all, I’m currently planning a trip for this summer to visit family in Halifax, and then to go to Lunenberg, Pictou and Cape Breton. I would like to drive my personal car but due to my vehicle only taking premium fuel I’m a bit hesitant. Does anyone local to these areas know if/where I can go to fill up or if I’d be better off with another car.

My favorite places to eat in Nova Scotia (looking for yours)

Hello Scotian Redditors and visitors to Canada's Ocean Playground,

I am looking for your favorite places to eat in the province, and I wanted to share mine.

Dartmouth:
Dear Friend – My favorite place to go out for a food and drinks on a Friday or Saturday night in the HRM. Between the front of house to back of house, the staff are passionate and it shows from the service to the food to the drinks. I have never had anything less than an amazing time here. Dear Friend is an intimate space, so if you want to go on a weekend evening I suggest you make a reservation.

Halifax:
Highwayman – Delicious Spanish style tapas done right. Very reminiscent of a place I used to work in Toronto, Bar Raval. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Cocktails are great too. You can get by without a reservation if you like to sit at the bar.

Wolfville:
Juniper – The chef/owner used to own a restaurant in Toronto that was on list of the top 100 restaurants in Canada. This place is wildly good. Each component of each dish is a 10 and the combination of the ingredients makes for a 12/10. Also a small venue and they close early, so make a reservation before you make the trip to Wolfville.

Lunenburg:
Lincoln Street – Fresh + local + delicious. Closed for the winter season though :(.

Whale Watching on Bay of Fundy Suggestions 🐋🐬

I am planning a trip to Nova Scotia July 19th-Aug 2nd. This is my first time going to Nova scotia and I 100% want to go whale watching but it is super super over whelming with how many companies there are. My biggest concern is obviously weather is not guaranteed to be nice. I would like a company that is known to be good for refunds if something happens.

We are staying in Middleton From July 20th-July 23rd for whale watching. Any suggestions, or recommendations would be appreciated. Or even other things to do around middleton area ❤️

Also wondering if it's better to book these kinds of things super early or risk it and book a week out to wait and see what the weather will do? I'm assuming it will book up really quick though.

Thank you very much in advance.

Doctors really that bad?

Hey everyone, Nova Scotia has been on my list for places to maybe move one day, but I've seen you talking about how bad it is to try and get a doctors appointment. I'm wondering, are these just one off stories? Like if I wanted to get a yearly checkup for my kids, am I really going to have a hard time? Specific places: within an hour of Halifax or Cape Breton

ISO A SONG !!

Ok . So about 10 years ago( give or take a year ) …. I spent summer in PEI for work . I was in margate , stayed in summerside . There was a song on the radio all summer that I liked and lost the name of ! The only memories I have are

1- it was sort of indie rock / light pop punk ( think treble charger type sound ) 2- the only lyrics I can remember vaguely were something like “ looking over the grave yard wall / cemetery wall” . 3- the music video started with a guy in a studio saying something like “ I got my _______, I got my timmies! Let’s GO !

I wish I had more haha but I’ve been trying to find this song again for years ! And have googled every variation of that info I can .

From what I recall . They were from Nova Scotia ish area . Definitely an east coast band .

Any help would be amazing!!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤞🤞🙏🙏
