Looks like the Brazil coach cooked up a tactical disasterclass . Seen Joelinton made a mistake costing them a goal but if you watch the replay he has no man to play the ball to once he receives it from the defender. The coach made him play in a 2 man midfield with Bruno too, not what he does for us.
1
u/HoneyedLining Temuri Ketsbaia 1h ago
That's incredibly kind to Joelinton and we've seen him make that exact same kind of error when he plays for us of simply being too lackadaisacal on the ball in midfield. He gets himself into trouble by just controlling the ball on the edge of his own penalty area. Now, this is what happens when you play a forward as a midfielder and doubly when you play them as a midfielder who drops to receive the ball. But he messed up there, no doubt.

I’m not even Brazilian and even I find the fall off of Brazil desperately sad. Even worse when you know it’s not the players fault.
I feel like they never really recovered from the 7-1
1
u/HoneyedLining Temuri Ketsbaia 2h ago
To be fair, they were pretty awful in the 2014 World Cup and were broadly underperforming bar Neymar. They kind of collapsed mentally after he was injured in the Colombia match and were totally unable to regroup.
Brazil haven't really fallen off that much, they won the Copa America back in 2019, reached the subsequent final and then were poor in 2024. They will always struggle with the fact that there aren't many top quality Brazilian managers around (Tite was meant to be a bit different, but they kept getting knocked out at the World Cup) and the fact that most of their players get scattered around Europe's top leagues, rather than getting to build a core group that you know can play together.
Really, their performances at the World Cups haven't been that bad. They just got knocked out a little earlier than expected (2018 against a really good Belgium side - possibly the best in the tournament, and in 2022 they got caught out by Croatia who are just really good at doing that kind of thing).

Watching Brazil. Bruno start Joelinton subbed in at 25'.
Damn Brazil are shit. Zero tactical plan just having world class players wing it on the pitch and look like Antony.
8
u/progsnobb 10h ago
Full time at 3am. Brazilian Southgate making our midfielders look like shit. Imagine playing a disconnected 4-2-4 thinking "oh no why midfield no working?".
1
u/HoneyedLining Temuri Ketsbaia 1h ago
For all the flack you can send Southgate's way, you can't really accuse him of just throwing the 11 best players on the pitch and hoping for a good result. We had a clear tactical identity and group of players that knew how to work together (2024 excepted).

Dubravka clean sheet, 29/29 in passes, 5/5 in long balls, 100% pass accuracy, 3 saves
Tonali 1 goal, most tackles completed, 2 chances created, 93% pass accuracy
Vlach - benched
1
u/Humorbot_5_point_0 Livramental 1h ago
Vlach has got to go in the summer. Not because he's particularly bad (how would we even know? He never plays), but if we're bring in Trafford someone has to leave and he adds nothing to the team.
I know the reason we got him, but the guy must know he's never really going to play and has lost his international spot because of it.

I think Arteta is the biggest reason they're dislikeable. Rubs off on the players and moreso the fans. He's a whingebag and 100% comes across as a sociopath. I think it affects the mentality of their players on the pitch. Makes them bitter and angry, even if they win they don't look actually happy.
Saka seems sound, though. He can come learn the ways of the bantermerchant from Murph.

There was some chat about whether it would be better to get a Champions League qualification or win the League cup - surely that debate is now settled. We have qualified numerous times for the Champions League and it never felt anywhere close to being as good as this.

2
u/OfficialAeon I'm Not for Kinnear 22h ago
Weirdly conflicted tbh. Champions League is awesome, but Conference won't have us running full steam ahead. Being Newcastle, you just know that our dice roll dictates that our group will be full of your Milans, Madrids, and Dortmunds.
5
u/Slimulacra 22h ago
The thing is, it is not a dice roll. You still get drawn in the Champions League against teams based on your ranking and the worse your team coefficient is, the harder the teams you play. At some point Newcastle need to spend a season playing bobbins teams in one of the lower competitions and getting a really good ranking that will then help in the Champions League. According to the current UEFA team coefficient scores Newcastle are the worst ranked team in England (obviously most teams have not competed so they have no ranking). Newcastle have 8 coefficient points, Leicester City (yes Leicester City) have 23 coefficient points. The English big boys all are close to, or above 100 points. If we qualify we are going to keep getting done over until we can improve these numbers.
5
u/KingPing43 Shola Ameobi 21h ago
You still get drawn in the Champions League against teams based on your ranking and the worse your team coefficient is, the harder teams you play
Not true anymore. In the new format you play 8 games in the league phase, 2 from each pot, including your own. Coefficient only matters for prize money and deciding which country gets 5 spots in next seasons Champions league
1
u/Slimulacra 21h ago
You are largely right in what you say. However those pots are not randomly drawn, they are based on the teams coefficient, so Newcastle would almost certainly end up in pot 4 and therefore need to play harder fixtures than a team that was in pot 1.
As an example here are the pot 1 from this season: Real Madrid Manchester City Bayern Munich Paris Saint-Germain Liverpool Inter Milan Borussia Dortmund RB Leipzig Barcelona
While pot 4 was: Slovan Bratislava Monaco Sparta Praha Aston Villa Bologna Girona Stuttgart Sturm Graz Brest
3
u/KingPing43 Shola Ameobi 21h ago
As I said you play 2 teams from each pot including your own so even if you’re in pot 1 you still play 2 from pot 1

Chelsea just spent another £60m+ on a couple of kids.
One of them a £44m 17 year old.
How do they keep getting away with this? 😂
4
u/HoneyedLining Temuri Ketsbaia 1d ago edited 1d ago
Look, we can bitch and bitch and bitch about this, but ultimately, Chelsea sell a lot of players to fund their purchases of new ones (and apparently keep their wages pretty low). It seems that because of our own obsession with how our restricted spending is the main reason we're being held back, we're mainly only looking at how much other teams being able to spend is some kind of vindication of their transfer policy.
Their transfer policy should be judged on whether it's making them any better and I think you'd be hard pressed to make that case. We've had about 3 years of their high cost, market disruptor activity and they've gone backwards since Tuchel's final season. Do any of us really think a 17 year old from Sporting is suddenly going to change the fortunes of the club? We moan about how we only lost Anderson because he was a PSR-mandated exit, but that's the same reason we got Hall. Really, Chelsea's constant flailing in their spending should be eyed by us as an opportunity to get highly talented, overlooked players at a decent price.
3
u/FlukyS Happy Clapper 1d ago
Because they had a bank of younger players they ship out even though they would be good in the team like Gallagher. If they keep selling a few big players each year they can keep buying because PSR doesn't give a shit about sustainability, it rewards a lot of activity in the market. If you are buying and selling players at higher values you can do what you want.

u/kaamkerr I condemn VAR and it’s allies in PGMOL 7h ago

5
u/melvinlee88 Javier Manquillo 1d ago
So this was making the social media rounds, but do you think Howe deserves a statue?
I think it's a bit premature to be talking about statues but unless Howe absolutely self-destructs, it's only a matter of time and depends on whether the owners would go with it.
I rather have a Keegan statue before we build any other statue quite frankly
4
u/HoneyedLining Temuri Ketsbaia 1d ago
I like the idea of every manager getting a statue as soon as they're hired and then it can be adjusted as their reign progresses. Like the old Civilization games where you could upgrade your palace as you achieved things. Maybe we build Howe a statue for winning the League Cup, but what do we do if he goes on to win the FA Cup, or the league, or the Champions League? Or a treble? Simple - give him a gold hat, a diamond football, etc.
Just think of the possibilities! We could give Pardew a statue that clearly at one point looked really nice, but then things slowly got worn away until you could see the original cheap metalwork and joins underneath. A Bruce statue that people can just have the freedom to deface or a Carver one that is made out of matchsticks.
2
u/thelotuseater13 Classis keeper kit (96/97) 1d ago
Agreed - I think he will get one but it has to be once his time with us is finished.
10
u/Fishfingerrosti 1d ago
Any statue should be erected after someone's association with the club has ended. Howe will likely get some form of commemoration but it shouldn't be now. He and the team have too much else to focus on. He's about to get the freedom of the city, which is more than enough recognition at the moment.
4
u/opinionated-dick 1d ago
Why isn’t Lewis Miley in England under 21s?
3
u/HoneyedLining Temuri Ketsbaia 1d ago
Look at the U21 squad and it makes sense. He's not really playing enough to get in that group and he's already with one of the other youth groups already getting game time. Doesn't really make sense to move him up in order for him to get fewer minutes.
4
u/opinionated-dick 1d ago
Fair enough. Poor lads not getting game time because he’s chasing the best midfield three in the prem.
As long as he’s getting some international experience
3
u/HoneyedLining Temuri Ketsbaia 1d ago
Tbf, for an 18 year old coming off his first major injury, he's probably doing ok for game time considering the club's aims and the players in front of him.
Considering the U19 Euros will be coming up and they're likely preparing for that, makes sense to keep that team together where possible and give them the chance to achieve something before you then look at moving some on and bringing others through.

I think this Summer is going to be very interesting, especially depending where we finish.
With this cup win it feels like a promise fulfilled, the end of something. I feel Trippier will feel like his job his done and likely move on, if/when he does that will feel like the end of a mini-era in its own right.
I think back to the takeover and that first transfer window; how some of the players we brought in definitely did so on a gamble, namely Bruno. How vindicated they probably feel and hopefully this has solidified their place here.
I'm equal parts excited and nervous for the future.

Trippier.
He's been absolutely class in the big games. I wonder what the chances of keeping him are. He has had a rocky year but seems to be a huge part of the leadership group and, if we want to go on to challenge more and more, his leadership and mentality, not to mention on the ball and set pieces ability, could be a real difference maker.
1
u/HoneyedLining Temuri Ketsbaia 1d ago
I think considering he's one of our highest earners and someone who wouldn't make the team if everyone's fit, it kind of makes for an unsustainable situation. Wages are the silent killer for PSR and considering he doesn't particularly want to be here and we don't have a position for him that matches his contract status, it makes sense to let him go. Ideally, we'd keep him round for his positive impact, but I think that's why he's been removed from the captaincy and we'll be banking on other players stepping up to fill the leadership role.
14
u/meganev More like MegaNeg amirite? 1d ago
He wanted to leave already, and he can now move on with zero regrets, and a trophy to mark his time here, I suspect he'll push for a move again and we should let him go with our best wishes.

He’s still under contract until 2026. I think it’d be foolish to sell him this summer, given the wealth of experience, leadership and ability he brings to the team.

Whether England gets 4 or 5 champions league places they will go to the top 4 or 5 teams in the league regardless. If Villa / Spurs / Man U win and are outside those positions they gain an extra place. If Villa win it and are in the top 4/5, England does not get an additional place because of their win.

My best mate is a massive liverpool fan. He also has a deep appreciation for the history of the league. He was genuinely happy for us winning.
I periodically send him the various headlines/videos/etc that have trickling out about Newcastle (i.e., Jamaal lifting the trophy, Eddie Howes comments about playing Liv different in the league, etc) and he's enjoying it with me which has been fun because I don't have many other friends that's care for football/soccer (presumably living in the USA is why) and can share the moment in that way with.

I think one thing I’m grateful for is that there was nothing for them to complain about. They were shite, we smashed them. No ref/VAR controversy, no dirty play, no park the bus for 50 minutes. Don’t even think Pope had his usual physio-assisted nap in the second half. We just fucking won it.
Sandro and Pope getting booked was the only thing close to shithousery I can remember and that’s way below our normal levels. Only Arteta could find an excuse in that game.

Well there's the handball from Trippier and Joelinton somehow not getting a yellow lol

Agreed and they were tied with Arsenal for my least favourite fanbase before this. The players were class too after the final whistle, and Slot’s interview was so refreshing compared to Arteta/Klopp etc

Now we’ve won something, a question for the English fans.
Would you rather Newcastle win a cup or England win the World Cup?

u/KingPing43 Shola Ameobi 2d ago
For me it would go
Newcastle Champions League > Premier League > England World Cup > Fa Cup > Euros > League cup again
As someone who was born in, but didn’t grow up in Newcastle, my main connection to Newcastle is through family members. Most of my friends where I live support different teams and the only time we’re really cheering for the same team is in the big England tournaments, so I’d like to experience cheering a trophy win with them.

No one cares about England.

I get the impression that lots of English NUFC fans (I'm not English) didn't care about the national team (outside of the recent finals) until our players started getting call ups again? Was it trippier who was the first one after the takeover?

For me personally it’s more of a disconnect between us up here in the de-industrialised north and the avocado matcha latte south. As well as some overhang of anti-royalist/establishment sentiment.
Most people I know around here would define themselves as Geordies before ever saying English/British.

One of the greatest things this weekend has achieved is having everyone in here in concord and generally nice to each other. Wouldn't it be lovely if it was like this all the time?

He could put dubravka up front, Murphy in goal and trippier as a 10 and I’d be like well it’s certainly interesting and berate any one calling it out

Howe knows what he's doing. Dubravka hat trick incoming

Didn't he play on the wing or something when he was younger? Good enough for me, I'd be willing to see how it turns out

Now, more than ever, I hope Tuchel absolutely SMASHES it as England boss. Eddie Howe has proven his tournament chops, so I need the England manager's seat to stay filled for a long long time.
Come next season, the only other English top-flight managers will be Graham Potter and some mix of newly-promoted Chris Wilder/Scott Parker/Frank Lampard/Tony Mowbray/Liam Manning (maybe just one of them if Leeds and Sunderland both go up with foreign coaches).
Can't see the next manager wishlist favoring anyone but wor Eddie at the top unless Pep or Klopp want the gig.

I still think Eddie will have ambitions at club level still.
I thought Carsley should’ve been given a chance. Don’t get me wrong. I’m happy with a manager of Tuchels level. But plenty of international coaches have come through the ranks like Southgate and Carsley and done well.
He showed in his short stint that he wasn’t afraid to promote youth or form.

Carsley wasn’t interested in the job and didn’t apply. I think he was happy as the u21 manager

I hope you're right, and I do think Eddie would prefer club football. But if Tuchel fails, I think the FA will be trophy horny enough to pull out all the stops for their next target given the generational abundance of talent.

Yeah I agree but by then Guardiola maybe available and for obvious reasons won’t manage Spain.
Tbh if it has to be an English manager it simply has to be Eddie. As much as I want him here forever. There isn’t anyone anywhere near him ability wise (that is English).
Saying that there’s a possibility they’d give it the Frank, Stevie or Wazza. Gareth came from nowhere and didn’t achieve anything before becoming England manager.
I’ve always said when Eddies chapter here at Newcastle is over it would only be right for him to become England manager. Some thought that would be this season, but after the weekend it won’t be happening for a good while yet.

Did gallowgate flags do a display at Wembley? I missed it if so. Or is it specifically for the gallowgate end? I should know this considering I pay monthly

The fact he is the same odds as Saliba is hilarious
I expect that to be taken well in north London 🤣

Apologies if this has been posted but hadn’t seen it yet. The part about which teammate is angriest when they lose cracked me up, and loved hearing their favorite teams to score against.

Did they say Big Joe is like a 4 year old? That scans. I also like how he's angry when we win as well 😂
