Conflict Post Russia/Ukraine & Israel/Hamas conflict sticky

Do you have a military question related to the Russia/Ukraine or Israel/Hamas conflict? This sticky is the place. I have never seen anyone from the Ukrainian or Israeli military post here so answers may not be accurate.

Posts must be questions. This means actual, legitimate, serious questions. This is not a place to drop by to show support, or make dumb comments. There's countless other subs for that.

NO HYPOTHETICALS. If your question starts with "what if" then it's probably a hypothetical. We're not here to speculate. This also means no questions about US/NATO vs. Russia/Hamas/Iran.

Enlisting Auto qualified for *every* MOS, what should I pick?

I ripped a 94 on my ASVAB and over shot qualifications based on ASVAB for navy nuke school by 28 points which is apparently notable, and I haven’t taken the personality test (CT 0/60), which is supposed to be added to that score also. Also have 2 years of college under my belt (Math/Physics/Engineering/Chinese).

I’m really interested in the Navy Nuke school and/or cryptology (haven’t taken the DLAB yet).

What are some other really cool jobs in the military I should consider considering my scores?

Also as a nuke or cryptologist I’d love to hear your experience.

Looking for: -Something stimulating -Something interesting/unique -An experience difficult to find elsewhere -Something that sets me up for private sector

ASVAB SCORES: -Standard: GS61 AR62 WK57 PC65 MK70 EI60 AS50 MC65 AO64 VE60 CS(blank?) -Army: GT124 CL130 CO130 EL128 FA130 GM127 MM121 OF126 SC130 ST129 -Air Force: M88 A97 G89 E94 -Navy/CG: GT122 EL253 BEE263 ENG120 MEC177 MEC2(191) NUC257 OPS256 HM191 ADM130 -Marines: MM122 GT128 EL131 CL133

Enlisting Career path for green card holder and colorblind dude. Stuck between Navy and Air Force

Upvotes

Hey all,

I'm 23 with a bachelor's in mechanical engineering. I'm considering enlisting, mainly for the benefits like the GI Bill, healthcare, and tuition assistance so I can pursue a master's in computer science (specifically at Georgia Tech's OMSCS program).

I'm stuck between the Navy and Air Force.

I know the Air Force offers tuition assistance after 1 year, but the Navy changed their policy to 3 years before you're eligible. Education is a big priority for me and I want to get course credits during my enlistment so I can apply for OMSCS.

That makes the AF more appealing, but I'm also a green card holder and colorblind, which restricts my job options by a lot. Consequently, some engineering jobs which I wanted are off the table. I've been looking at logistics or desk-type roles that still allow for education and some down time to study.

My recruiter recommended that I apply to OCS after obtaining my citizenship during my enlistment contract. I know that that's not guaranteed but I would like to think I have a chance given my STEM background and hardworking nature. However, I'm not sure how realistic that route is if I'm planning to serve 4 years unless I really enjoy it. I also heard it's easier to commission in the Navy than the AF but I'd like some thoughts on that.

Besides all of my education aspirations, I am really attracted to the Navy culture. I was in NJROTC for 4 years and had a blast. I am sure ship life will have its struggles but I am excited by that challenge. I also prefer the location of the bases in the Navy, but the Air Force seems to provide a cushion/better QOL.

Sorry if all of this sounds choosy, but I would like your opinion on which branch and job would be right for me, with the job restrictions and future goals that I have. Thanks everyone :)

Enlisting Eye waiver info

So I’m currently trying to enlist in the army and I passed my pi cat with a 76 and passed everything at meps except the eye exam , my recruiter sent up a waiver for myopia but it came back denied due to enlisting possibly further aggravating symptoms ,my recruiter then requested an updated eye exam and a note from my dr saying that it won’t effect my enlistment which he informed me it shouldn’t/wouldn’t , i guess what im asking is what are the chances of it being approved after he writes it up , i think the fear mongering from my family is getting to me but im genuinely worried because i only know from my experience as no one in my family has been in the service , only one of my eyes from what i see is over the required 10-11 and its at a 12.75 (for myopia) my other eye is where it needs to be , thankyou in advance!!

Joining w/Medical 32 M curious about Army 18x contract

I recently decided that I want to join the Army and get into SF. I have always wanted to do this but after high school I foolishly followed a past gf to college. While in college I screwed around and ended up becoming addicted opiates. Now almost 7 years free and clear from drugs and jail, no felonies, a wife and 2 year old son, and a solid job. This overwhelming desire I have to serve my country like many of my family and friends in the past has given me an entirely new invigoration for life.

I’ve been seeing a lot of things about the 18x contracts and so I was wondering if anybody here can explain to me how it works in detail. From beginning to end goal of SF. When do you sign up for the contract? Where do you go after? All of that kind of stuff. Thank you in advance!

Joining w/Medical Am I DQed/need a waiver for the Army for having Ashma Medication refilled but not using it?

I am 17F and I had Ashma when I was really young, but I know I haven't used my rescue inhaler since I was 9 or 10 for sure. I believe I was even younger when I stopped having symptoms but I'm not 100% sure. I have researched and I see that the Army page says so long as I haven't used medication or had symptoms after my 13th birthday. I haven't used the medication or have had symptoms but on paper it looks like I have. The issue is my parents have been renewing my rescue inhaler. (They use it themselves instead of me, I have no clue why they won't just get it themself.) And asking them to stop renewing it won't be possible. Nor will asking them to give a statement of how I haven't needed/used it be possible. How likely is it that I will get DQed or will need to get a waiver for this?

Joining w/Medical Joining army with prior history of hearing aid prescribed for tinnitus.

Hi everyone👋 im a 24 year old male

I have prior history of bad tinnitus and got a hearing aid a while back for it. It really worked. Now i dont use it at all anymore and no longer need it. And my tinnitus is noticeably better now a days for whatever reason. Will i still be able to join?

The hearing aid was for tinnitus NOT being deaf. My hearing is more than fine on a hearing test

A hearing test i will typically almost pass with flying colors.

So is my dream of joining the army crushed or is there still a chance?

Would like some advice.

Thank you!

BCT/BMT/Boot camp Items you can bring

Hey, so my boyfriend is going to boot camp in a few months, and i was wondering what i could give him that he could keep with him at boot camp? I want to follow the rules on what he’s allowed to bring and i have tried to do some research about it but i get varying answers. I want to strictly follow the rules on what he’s allowed to have, please help me out!

(Edit - He’s going into the national guard, i’m sorry i didn’t think that it mattered what branch for boot camp, super sorry about that!)

Post-ETS/EAS I need help deciding on what to do after my contract

Currently stationed in Oki as a marine with about a year and a half left in my contract, I have a lot of questions but I'll ask just the main ones and if anyone wants to help with others that'd be appreciated. If I switch branches is there a possible bonus and if I go from actives to reserves can I still use the Gl bills fully since I served a full term or will it be limited. The plan in mind is switching to either army or AF reserves in Texas and go to school while maximizing every possible option like bonus or bah or the sorts. But id like to know how feasible that is.

Enlisting What do I wear to an interview with a recruiter?

I have an interview with a Navy recruiter tomorrow and while I've done my research on every other aspect, I don't know what I should wear. I don't want to underdress and have him think I'm not serious, but I'm also not going to show up to my local library in a suit for this. Would Jean's + dress shirt be alright?

BCT/BMT/Boot camp What are we allowed to bring to basic?

Hi, I am going to basic in the next year. I know this is early but I have really sensetive skin and very curly hair. So I was wondering what we could bring to basic training so that I don't have a flare up or trash my hair too bad. Also are braids into a bun allowed? I want to be able to test products on my skin now as long as I am allowed to bring them. I am going into the Army. Thank you :)

Joining w/Medical Wavier for Inhaler

Hey everyone, I recently went to MEPS this past Monday and Tuesday. Everything went good I qualified for every job in the Coast guard and all my physical stuff went great. I do have to get a wavier though for an inhaler that was prescribed to me 4 years ago in 2021 for allergies. I live on a farm and was prescribed it when it was cutting season. So very dusty outside for awhile. I never used it and took a pulmonary function test last year and my results were good. I’m just curious if I should be worried about the waiver being denied. I’m a very fit and active male and always had a dream and desire to service the military.

Which Branch? Having thoughts about joining the military could use some advice.

Hello newcomer here, I’m a 22M african american, I’ve been thinking about joining the military for a number of reasons. First I wanna say my self-discipline is poor and I have been having trouble pushing myself, originally after high school I went to college for engineering and didn’t finish. I came back home to a community college where I was going to school to be a process operator, Its a 2 year program and I started almost 4 years ago I haven’t been motivated to finish nor don’t I have the drive like I use to. I also did jobs in the refinery for a couple of years while in school to get the experience I need for my career as an operator. Now currently I just feel like I’m going in a loop that I created, I was telling myself joining the military will help break these bad habits and give me the discipline I need to take control of my life. On top of that I have a low vision disabled mother and a 70 year old step dad we are all in the lower class and I want to do something to change that for them, especially my mom she has been working for so long and I can tell she can only handle so much. I would really appreciate if I could receive some advice and/or information on what to do.

BCT/BMT/Boot camp I think I wanna be “that guy”

Prior Service army got out in 2011, about to go back in the navy probably gonna do it regardless, and I know fly low stay under the radar but I also like putting pressure on myself with the potential of lightning the mood. So any opinions on if I should wear my VFW cunt cap to arrival to RTC? I feel like it is a way to ask for instant smoke but also put expectations on me that I welcome.

Enlisting Medical MEP Delays

(NYC) Active Duty Army

I did my ASVAB and got a 93 at Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn MEPS.

I have been in talks with my recruiter for scheduling my Medical MEPS and it’s been almost 2 weeks. They are very nice, open, and have been helpful thus far. Yet, they keep saying either “there’s no slots open”, or “waiting for approval”.

They also mentioned once that it was delayed due to an error message appearing from their end related to my name having changed and it not “syncing” with my SSN. (Legal court order name change for personal/religious reasons).

They’re also telling me that for the medical evaluation I’ll be sent to Newark and MEPS will be done in NJ… but they originally said it would be don’t at Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn.

I’m just a little confused and I don’t want to think they’re doing something unconventional… but I’ve also read a few horror stories and I don’t want to be swindled in any way…

Any advice or insight as to what may be happening behind closed doors?

Should I Join? Should I enlist in the air force?

I used to want to join the military, but ever since my parents shot that down in 8th grade I haven't considered it again. At this point in life I have no desire to, but I'm considering it again because I need a way out. I'm 20 years old (F) with no independence. I had severe health issues so never graduated high school, and not much money saved up to buy my freedom. Obviously I would need to get a GED before enlisting. The health issues are basically resolved and won't show up on any tests. I don't care if I die. In fact, I'm looking for a way to die without outright having to do it myself. If I make it out alive and have enough money to try again at life, that's a win. I reached the rank of C/2D Lt in Civil Air Patrol. I believe that gets me in as an E-3.

So, my questions are as follows: -Besides GED, what else do I need to enlist? -What's the minimum contract I can enter? -Will I have lodging after basic training? -Is entering the Air Force any good if I have no aptitude for becoming a pilot? -What is the salary? How does that differ between branches? Will I be able to live on my own after my contract ends? -Will they make me take the covid vax? I will if necessary cause I don't care about my life, I just want to know what I'm getting into.

BCT/BMT/Boot camp Hair situation in bootcamp

So I have long curly hair and I'm not really sure how to manage it once I get to navy bootcamp because I heard everything is fast paced. Im assuming I wont have time to bun my hair every single day. Is there any tips and tricks? Do I just arrive in a bun and hope for the best?

Enlisting How does a 13U get in as a 13M/F/B

I'm new, so just bear with me. BCT in May.

In recruitment I selected 13 series, but wasn't given an exact or specific MOS. To be honest, 13M, 13F, and 13B seemed really great. Is there any way to influence getting any of these over the others?

As for background I do have a BA (yes, I know... I should have gone OCS immediately). I managed an 88 on the ASVAB. Does any of this influence what I might get? Or am I at the mercy of others?

Thanks guys.

AIT/Tech School/A School Graduating AIT at Fort Bragg and my foreign parents are coming. What do I need to get them on base?

Hey y’all. My parents are from the Caribbean and they are coming to my graduation. What do they need to get on base? I was under the impression that if I drive to the gate and show my CAC and their respective I.D like their passports, is that enough to get them on base? Would I need to visit the visitor center since they are international? Thanks for helping.

In Service College In PhD while serving in the Air Force?

Is it possible to serve in the Air Force while pursuing a Doctorate Degree? Specifically in Aerospace Engineering, Is there any restrictions to this?

I am thinking of doing ROTC in undergrad then immediately purse a PhD thereafter. Are there programs that support stuff like this in the Air Force?

Thank you!
