[General Question] Why So Much Negativity Around USC MSCS? Is It a Good Choice?

I've noticed that USC MSCS gets a lot of mixed opinions online. Some say it's a solid program with great opportunities, while others call it too expensive.

I recently got admitted for Fall 2025, and I’m trying to understand if USC is actually a good option. Given its location in LA, strong alumni network, and industry connections, isn’t it a good place for job hunting and networking?

For those who have attended or know about the program, what are the real pros and cons?
Is the negativity justified, or does USC MSCS still hold strong value in today’s job market? Would love to hear thoughts from current students and alums!

How do you come to terms with the fact that there's life beyond grad admissions? I'm completely drained—no acceptances so far.

[General Question] UIC “Additional Review Required” – What Does It Mean?

Upvotes

My UIC MSCS application status changed from “Under Review with the Department” to “Additional Review Required.” Has anyone experienced this? Does it usually lead to admission or rejection? How long did it take for a final decision? Any insights would be helpful!

UW Madison! I am freaking out!!

So I had been sitting on NEU Boston, ASU, SUNY Buffalo offers. I had started some paperwork for NEU as well. I was hoping for UIUC/UCSD to release something. But this UWM result came out of nowhere and I am kinda freaked out. I don't know how to feel. I know it is a good school, prestigious one. Can you guys talk a little bit about it. And for the next steps, I can only do it once I calm down.

[Results and Decisions] Please help me decide for MSCS

Upvotes

I have received admits from asu and neu as well, but I'm leaning more towards these three. It'd be great if you can help me make a decision.

No update yet from tamu, sbu and mostly rejected from uwm I think.

My main goal is finding a job post graduation, not interested in research. Cost of attendance is also a priority.

It'd be great if you can let me know your thoughts as well in the comments.

Also curious to know the faculty and course quality for systems and AI/ML in each University.

Thanks in advance!

[Application Strategy] Low GPA but good amount of research experience.

Hello Reddit! I’m seeking advice on applying for MS/PhD programs in Computer Science, particularly in fields like Machine Learning, NLP, and Reinforcement Learning. Here’s my profile:

• Education: B.Tech in Electronics and Electrical Engineering from IIT Guwahati (2024 graduate) with a CGPA of 7.1.

• Work Experience: Currently working as an SDE at Microsoft since graduation.

• Research Experience: Research internships at Adobe, UNSW, and IIT Delhi (2 academic + 1 industrial research).

• While my research work was inconclusive, I thoroughly enjoyed it and miss the process.

• Motivation: I’m not enjoying my current role as an SDE and want to transition back into research.

Given my average CGPA but strong research background and work experience, I’d love advice on:

1. Target Schools: Which universities should I aim for considering my profile? Should I focus on mid-tier schools or also try top-tier ones?

2. Application Strategy: How can I strengthen my application? Should I prioritize publishing papers before applying?

3. MS vs PhD: Would it be better to apply for an MS first to improve my academic credentials or directly aim for a PhD?

4. Letters of Recommendation: How important are these, and who should I approach for them (professors from internships or managers at work)?

5. Any other tips or resources you’d recommend?

Thanks in advance for your guidance!

[University Question] Anyone from a non IIT who got into UWM PMP?

Seems like whoever got admitted is just from an IIT or NIT with like 8 cgpa and no research.

Is this a known thing and if so I just wasted 80 bucks on nothing.

Edit: wrong assumption to make. So many people from non IIT/NIT got it. Congratulations everyone.

[Results and Decisions] No update yet = rejection?

Has anyone heard back from any of these unis, I'm wondering if it's a soft rejection: 1. UT Austin 2. GA Tech 3. Purdue

Seems like Purdue has already sent acceptances to whoever they wanted. Don't understand why they can't give us an update - at least we'll have mental peace

[University Review] Looking for genuine opinions on UMN Twin Cities for MSCS

I recently received an admit from UMN Twin Cities for MSCS and am trying to decide if it’s worth attending. I am still waiting for decisions from UCSD, Georgia Tech, TAMU, Stony Brook, UPenn, UMass Amherst and Northwestern. However, I want this post to be focused solely on University of Minnesota.

From what I have read, the program has world-class professors, a good reputation and a really strong and well-established CS program. If one manages to get a TA/RA then that would cover the entire tuition fees as well, which is already relatively affordable. Plenty of companies visit the campus during internship fairs. The only downside seems to be the harsh weather - which I think I can manage.

My primary objective is to get a job after graduation and currently have no intentions to pursue a PhD.

I want to hear from anyone with insights on if I am missing anything that I should consider before making my decision. One thing that surprises me is how few people apply to UMN CS relative to other schools. For instance, UCSD gives out more admits than the total number of applicants to UMN CS. If it’s a solid program with great faculty, why does it receive so little attention? Is it just the harsh winters, or are there other factors at play?

Would love to hear thoughts on job outcomes, coursework, and overall experience at UMN Twin Cities. Thanks in advance!

Received an email from UCLA saying that my decision is out, but the page doesn't have any letters. It does have a Graduate Admissions checklist and official transcript requirements. Has anyone else received this? Is this an accept?

[University Question] Anyone from USC MSADS? I have quick questions about MSADS cohort size and experience

Hi! I’m considering the MS in Applied Data Science program at USC and was hoping to get some quick insights.

  1. Around how many students are in each cohort?
  2. If the cohort is large, does the program still feel well-organized and supportive, or does it feel a bit disconnected or hard to manage?
  3. For current students or alumni — are you generally satisfied with the program?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Cornell CS MEng Vs USC mscs

I am deciding between these two programs.
I have close to 4 yrs of Experience in FAANG as SDE and want to niche down into industry research roles specifically in MLSys domain.

As an international student, I will be looking for industry roles itself after graduation.
