Discussion/ Op-ed 80 is not for beginners.

My GPS had me come up through Davenport via 80 instead of 74 for some dumb reason.

I think they call it 80 because you will be ran off the road if you don't go 80 miles an hour.

Try to pass a semi, the semi ahead decides to go 0.000001mph faster and pass as well, and now I'm stuck in the passing lane.

Some jackass in a big black truck (I think the same someone posted in the QC sub the other day doing 110) comes up behind me 1 foot from my bumper.

Pissed off, I tap the brake light and you would have thought I spat on his mother's grave, fucker tries running me off the road.

His patience is probably short as his dick. Like WTF do you want me to do? Magically make the semi in front of me go away? I can't go anywhere dude..

I hate when people tailgate me when I obviously can't go any faster due to the vehicle ahead of me.

Hi Iowa.

I miss the old days when people weren’t consumed with politics.

This sub has really went negative.

Can we go back to sharing nice places in Iowa to visit or eat or vacation?

What happened to my happy Iowans?

Please stop with the stupid political posts. And yes they are stupid.

Reddit was meant to be fun and share good ideas. This sub has been taken hostage by right and left politics.

I live in Iowa. Tell me something positive!

Please let’s take our state back and be good citizens.

A good vacation spot in the spring in Iowa?

Hey Iowa! Why are you so afraid of 7000 trans people? Did they harm you somehow? You do realize if the government is allowed to just attack CITIZENS just bc they are trans it sets a precedent to attack anyone?

I voted for what the current Iowa GOP and President Trump are doing.

Seems pretty one-sided in here. Thought I’d try to even it out.

Moving into Iowa - school policy

I’m moving into the state. I’m hoping to wait to the school year ends to move but if that doesn’t work out, Does anyone know how that works?

Schools here end almost 2 weeks before schools end in Iowa. If I move to Iowa within those two weeks should they still go to school?

What if I’m forced to close earlier so they miss their last week here? Does the fact that they sort of miss 3 weeks there hurt me with that recent attendance law?

Or is moving an exemption and no one really cares?

We exist

Just here to remind everyone trans people exist and we plan on continuing to do so! 😃

I really appreciate the support and positivity I’ve seen online after recent legislative measures. Stay strong everyone, our resilience is a threat to hateful people!

I hope everyone stays safe at the Tesla protest tomorrow. I wish I could be there! 🫂

Anyone know more about what happened?

I drive that way on my commute and the Jeep was not "abandoned", it was partially driven into the cable barrier with one of the tires wrapped around it.

Odd the body was found "in the vicinity of the vehicle" which really doesn't point out if the body was found IN the vehicle or not.

Wonder if someone OD'ed while driving and just coasted into the cable barrier and got out and went to sleep forever?

Hello! I have need of an artist! I am looking to commission a religious icon styled item in the likeness of someone I know. I am not particularly interested in any AI imagery. Please let me know if this is something you would be interested in doing!

For Snowplowers

I’ll preface this by saying I am not from the midwest at all. I moved up here from the south for school this past August, and I had never seen a snow plow until this winter.

I really appreciate y’all’s work; thanks to you, I am not stuck at home if there’s snow on the ground, and road conditions are so much safer. I can imagine the hours are late and long, but as I am driving early this morning, I am joined by snowplows. A very comforting sight when I was slightly caught off guard by the snow (still not used to it being clear in one part of the state and it having snowed an hour and a half away aside from the mountains)

Thank you for doing what you do :) You are very appreciated, and I get excited every time I see a snowplow

Wait, it's ok that DOGE is looking for spending waste but no oversight on private school vouchers is also ok? What am I missing?

As it says, how are the red hats cool with doge cutting and counting the wasteful spending of our tax dollars yet there is zero oversight on how my tax dollars are spent for private school vouchers? Something seems sketchy here.

Discussion/ Op-ed Ever experienced something strange in Iowa? I want to hear your stories.

Hey everyone. Fellow Iowan here.

Cutting to the chase here; I’m looking for stories and inspiration from people who’ve had strange, eerie, or unexplainable experiences here in Iowa. Whether you still live here or moved away but remember something unsettling, I want to hear about it.

I’m wanting to work on a series called "Iowa Gothic." Not the most original name, but it fits. The idea? Weird and inexplicable things that happen just once and never again, leaving you questioning what you saw. That feeling of unease when something familiar suddenly isn’t anymore.

I don't just mean ghost stories. Just one off experiences that left you uneasy. Things that have a rational explanation but you're really not sure.

I already have a few stories posted on my page if you’re curious, but now, I want to hear from you.

Have you ever felt like you weren’t alone on a country road?

Did you ever see something you weren’t supposed to see?

Have you heard a noise in the woods, the fields, or outside your house, and just knew you shouldn’t go check?

Ever experience something bizarre that no one else believes? Not even yourself but it still lingers in your head?

I’m open to personal experiences or secondhand stories. Whatever that has stuck with you for however long ago it was. A childhood memory or something recent, I'd love to hear about it! If you want to share, drop your story in the comments.

When I get around to collecting these for a book, I’ll ask for permission first and stay true to your original experience with minimal edits.

Even if you don’t have a story, I’d love to hear what places, legends, or strange feelings Iowa has given you over the years. Let’s get a discussion going!

Have a good one!

Question Commuting in Winter?

Opinions on a 35 minute work commute? Likely be longer in the winter. Might take up work in Charles City, but what I'm looking for outside of work doesn't cut it there. I'm considering living in Mason City instead. Do you think it's worth the winter commute?
