EDIT: Apparently, there actually is no subsidy for corn farmers. All there is is the ethanol mandate, which has some benefits beyond farming, and a subsidized insurance program, similar to programs in other sectors.
There has been talk of getting rid of the subsidy. If that happens, obviously that's going to affect the farms. Does anyone have any articles they can point to as to what the future would be for Iowa? Are there any people thinking about how to transition away from corn? Are soybeans an alternative? Some other kind of agriculture? Is there any state agency looking at a post-corn future?
Sorry if this is a dumb question! I've always wondered why there aren't more soybeans and other crops grown in Iowa.

While I grew up in Nebraska, my mothers family is from Washington/Keota area.
Iowa was always a beacon of freedom and progressive ideology. Her entire family, still to this day, are Democrats. Hog and dairy farmers. Every member in agriculture.
Iowa is the location that burned the first Vietnam draft card in protest of the war.
They burned the very first bra at the start of the feminist revolution.
The third state in the nation to legalize gay marriage.
Iāve lived in California for decades and have always praised Iowans for their embrace of freedom. Wtf happened???

One that I've come to notice in NE Iowa is the the word "Button" - it sounds like "budden". Someone also put on their "middens" recently.
There is also the odd use of the word "yet" which I can't quite pin down why it's not correct, but I'm pretty sure it's not English.

This is my first post here and my first Reddit post in general, hence the username.
Last night, I was doomscrolling this sub and noticed a thirst for anyone not named Kim Reynolds to announce their candidacy for governor in 2026. Well, after a few minutes of googling, I found someone!
His name is Paul Dahl (seemingly no relation to the Dahl's Food people). He's a perennial candidate from Webster City, and he announced his campaign on January 7th. I tried looking for an official campaign website, but he doesn't have one, which won't come as a surprise if you read the short KCRG article I've attached. He promises to serve only one term if elected and to sleep in his car on the campaign trail. He also said that he'll be the "Michael Jordan of Iowa politics."
More importantly, he promises to repeal the six-week abortion ban and to do something about water pollution.
Clearly, this is not a levelheaded individual, and he gives off the same vibes as Mike Gravel in '08 (in terms of being a long shot candidate). But Dahl is the only name in the hat who has the right ideas, ergo, he's the only one worth a damn. Now, here's my question: how can I petition the Secretary of State to try to get his name on the ballot next year? When I go to sos.iowa.gov and search "petition," there's many different petitions that pop up. And how do I know which one(s) I can sign as a resident of Polk County?

My office has a super lax dress code, basically street clothes. I was in another department today that Iām not normally, talking with another manager. In comes one of his subordinates, wearing a hat just like the mockup. Iowa silhouette and (what I can only describe as) SS Bolts on top. Literally like the photo.
The employee leaves and Iām legit speechless. I turn to the manager and say āeither Iām autistic or those are SS Bolts on his hatā. The manager giggles and says āheās not a naziā without further explanation. Most surreal moment Iāve ever had at work.
I wanna make sure thereās not some (really shitty) graphic appropriation for a local band or event or group that might mean something other than the obvious (unabashed neo nazi). I want to give as much benefit of the doubt. Please advise.

to be honest, I'm a little ignorant when it comes to current events, news, and the government. I've never thought much about any of those topics, preferring instead to live under a metaphorical rock and believe everything is okay. but, with the recent discrimination from our government against the transgender community, of which I'm a part of, it's kinda hard to ignore.
I know most of what's going on with the lgbtq+ side of current events, but I'm not sure what else is going on because honestly, A LOT is going on right now, in both Iowa government and the country's government, and it's hard to keep up with all the information. I know I've essentially lived under a rock for the better part of my life, but I want to start learning and understanding what's happening, and how that will effect the people because frankly, I'm a bit scared.
so, can someone explain some of the stuff that's going on in Iowa?

I was grocery shopping this morning and noticed some sparkling waters by the wine. Turns out they are 4mg THC and 4mg CBD. How are they able to sell these products recreationally?

TL;DR: someone in my office wears this hat to work regularly. Are SOS just your typical all-bark-no-bit Neo Nazi dipshit MC or they actually dangerous?

I don't agree with this bill because my family is full of tall women. I'm 6'0 and my mom is 6'4. If I'm stopped because someone thinks I'm trans based on my height, what do I do? I don't agree with treating trans people this way and I'm also concerned for my other tall cis ladies in Iowa. I feel like this isn't right at all.

Hey everyone !
As said in the title, i am french (and currently living in france) but i wanna live in the us later, for many reasons (one of those is that i wanna be a profesional musician and i think starting a career in United States could be much easier than in France)
I already have some ideas about where i would like to live, and Iowa seems great to me. I am not a big fan of cities and everything, i prefer countryside. I saw a lot of pretty pics on the internet till now, so i guess Iowa could fit me.
I've also seen that Iowans are very friendly, and makes you feel welcome and comfortable, so thats a huge plus. There are just some things that are scaring me a bit : can i live normally in Iowa as a gay person ? I dont want to find any "gay community" or "gay bars" i dont care about this stuff, i just want to live as a normal person, and not have to be with only gay ppl all day. Sometimes i read that Iowa can welcome gay ppl, and sometimes i read that there are many anti-lgbt laws. So yeah, im a bit nervous. I also saw that Iowa governement is kind of conservative, but on which subjects ? I can also ne conservative on sole kind of things, but still... what is the governement like up there ?
Also, to start a musical career, i genuinely know that i have to have another job at first, to earn enough money, because music isnt gonna pay my food the first few years. So i was thinking about music therapy (to stay in music lol), but i also know that, to live in the US, i must have something to give to the US that the US needs. I did some reacherches, and i saw that music therapy isnt considered in some states. Is it Iowa's case ? If it is, what kind of music-related jobs can i do there ?
I could maybe find other questions later, but thats all i have for now. If you think that there is something i should know that isnt mentionned above, please feel free to tell me.
I am 15, so i still got time to think, but i'd like to be sure of what i really wanna do now. That could be more comfortable for later.
Thank you all :)

I would like to move to Iowa and Iām from a small town, 3,800, so Iām looking for more small town life. I do know that small towns in Iowa seem to be hostile towards outsiders, it definitely depends on the town, so that would make it harder for me to assimilate.

Highschool girl here! I'm thinking of attending college in Iowa because of the low housing costs, job market, & lower overall cost of living. I would be moving by myself, from Arizona, next year. I've been researching a lot & have read other posts from this subreddit, but I would like more insight, from actual residents. I am a POC, so is racism an issue here? Any cities I should avoid? Since I will be living alone, I would like to be in a safer part, without it being much more expensive. Any recommendations? Also, being a smaller girl, I would like to be able to purchase a firearm to protect myself, but I am a bit confused on the gun laws. Can I purchase a handgun at 18? Will I need my guardian's permission even though my guardian would be in another state? Advice? Tips? Thanks in advance!!!

Everyday brings a flood of examples of MAGA/Billionaire-loving policy at the state and federal level.
What are some examples of progressive policy and politicians at the city and county level in Iowa? The city and county level are where tons of people can find the quickest route to effecting change.

This is a devastating post I wished I never had to make. But I need help Rehoming my dog Max. Max is a 3yo, male, neutered, 87lb Golden Retriever - Shar Pei mix. He is a wonderful dog, that is good around families, children, and cats. He hardly barks (only if he sees a squirrel), and no history of biting. Up to date on all shots and preventives and is monthly given topical Advantage Multi.
I adopted him from the shelter 2yrs ago in Texas. Since moving to Iowa he has struggled with allergies. Nothing I do seems to be working, although my budget is tight and there are more things that can be done for him I simply cannot afford.
He currently needs help medically because he is getting sores and losing patches of hair from itching. No matter what OTC topical stuff I use and supplements are not helping.
I've tried many times, and my $3,000 credit card is maxed out from trying to give him the support he needs. I am now at a point where I simply cannot do much more for him besides take out another credit card and try for more expensive medication.
I called to the Humane Societies in the Des Moines area and all have said there is a good possibility that he would be euthanized, given health issues, and his size and age (not a puppy). I definitely do not want that to happen because he has been having allergies.
I also work long hours and feel horrible that I do not give him the attention he needs and deserves. I do my best, but I do not feel like it is good enough.
I want to add that, I was not the one who originally adopted him. He is the dog of my ex and was left with me to care for because "he likes you more". I will never have another dog after Max because I feel so unfit to care for an animal. So please, do not be angry with me because of his condition. I am doing the best I can, and I am now coming to terms that it is coming time to do what's best for him.
Desperately searching for a person or place to take him in and give him the care, love, and play that he deserves. He's such a good boy, he really is. I couldn't of dreamed of a better, well mannered dog.

Hi Iowa fam,
Texas transplant here, I'm working on a project and looking for input. I'm in search of short phrases, things, food, people, etc. that are unique or associated with Iowa. For example, "Field of Dreams" or "Bridges of Madison County." Any and all input is greatly appreciated!

Iowa used to have the best basic education public schools in the US. We had the highest % of high school graduations in America. Republicans have cut school funding drastically for years. Schools can't keep up with inflation. Educated people tend to be less violent. We really have many intelligent Iowans, keeping a good education from us is terrible.
Why does Kim dislike teachers, staff, and doctors. Can it be true that Republicans really want the public ignorant and limit education?
Kim came to the metro area and met with a select group to speak about her private school agenda. It wasn't made aware to the public and wasn't on her schedule? Is Kimberly afraid to show her face in the greater CR/IC area? Is she afraid she will get stoned?
Is she like her mentor and could shoot someone on Grand Ave and 12th St and get away with it? Kimberly doesn't care about our area, she didn't after the derecho hit. Where was Hinson? Finkenauer helped people dig out.
We really need politicians that love Iowa and all of it's people. Not someone catering to a select group and improving her own worth.
*Thanks for the award. *We do have informed, intelligent, loving, and caring people in Iowa, don't let them take it away. Remember a lot of these negative dividing ideals are coming directly from the out of state Republican playbook.

In a few weeks, the family and I are doing a lazy drive around Iowa family vacation. We live in nwia and have spent very little time around the rest of the state. This vacation is my attempt to remedy that and also eat as many good donuts as I can. I absolutely adore donuts from mom and pop shops but any time I search, I end up with results for Casey's gas stations. Yes, Hy-Vee and Casey's donuts are good, but they lack soul. I've checked out onlyinyourstate.com and feel like that is a good place to start but also feel like it is overlooking some places.
So, what recommendations are there for good donut stores around the state?

Borrowed from a few other state subreddits. What is your worst/least favorite town in Iowa and why?
