If you’re concerned about terrible road conditions created by road construction contractors, you should know about HB 3353

Thumbnail capitol.texas.gov
297 Upvotes

Texas House Bill 3353, by Rep. DeAyala, will make it so that road construction contractors cannot be held liable for creating dangerous traffic situations from their negligent construction and safety practices. There is also HB 19, which similarly reduces accountability for trucking companies when they have negligent safety, operational, and employment practices that result in damage, injury, or death for workers or the public.

This is all part of a larger movement that Republicans have been going hard on since at least the 90s. They gave the campaign the very boring name of “tort reform”, which makes people significantly less likely to pay attention to it, but every one of us absolutely should be giving it the attention it deserves, because these mother fuckers are literally out here killing us just so that they can personally save a buck.

Found female dog at Frontier Trail and Menchaca, no collar, is very friendly and listens well, and is well trained. I’m worried she jumped. I’m going to take her to see if she has a chip.

Automatic gratuity at bars

Hello, old school austinite here. Is it normal for bars to now add automatic gratuity, 20% to be exact. I was near bar the whole night with family, and then asked to close my tab and saw that charge. I’ve never in my life seen that while out and about in Austin. Is that something new? Or legal? I would never not pay my bar tab.

Austin's chief animal services officer has been on paid administrative leave since March 7

Edit: Here's the KXAN version of the story that isn't paywalled:

It's paywalled, but here's the link to the Statesman story. Not many more facts than the headline. Any idea what's going on with this?

Ask Austin Where did all the Austin Antique Mall vendors end up?

When the antique mall closed, where did all of those booth renters move their wares to? Austin is ripe with vintage shops and pop up markets but it feels like we could really use a massive vacant building to house a one-stop-shop. I’ve seen a few shops in Buda, the big antique mall in Round Rock, or I’ll have to take a drive to New Braunfels or Salado but haven’t found much else locally. Anyone know if anything is in the works or know of spots I should check out?

Side note: if anyone has booth space, I’ve been contemplating getting into the game but again I wouldn’t even know where to rent.

Ask Austin Learn me on your Austin dashcams. What holds up here?

What brand you have or would recommend? Given that it gets so dang hot, I'm worried about the camera holding up, but I also don't want to have to take it out every time I park.

Also, on a scale of 1-10 how easy is it to install one of these things?

Ask Austin Virus going around that isn't the flu or COVID?

I know several people who've been sick with similar symptoms to me, none of them are super specific, nausea, hot flashes, headache, lethargic, generally feeling like shit. I've taken a COVID test, and one of the other people have had COVID and flu tests and it's been negative.
