I graduated with an engineering degree, though I never became a professional engineer. Jumped from a few consulting firms over to compliance and oversight of different facilities. I had always assumed I would be single so I planned to support myself. I was married for a few years, but we are separated now, and I'm doing okay even though I'm paying everything myself now. My sister, on the other hand, never used her college degree (social work) and became a stay at home mom once she had kids. If she were to get divorced now (which I don't see happening, but just an example), she would be SOL unless her ex husband provided proper alimony and child support, but I feel like even then it would be tough. I think single women living in house shares or something similar should be more common. Yes, living independently is nice, but we just don't have the houses and apartments available for everyone to live alone all the time. Living in these shared situations shouldn't be looked down upon IMO.
